LINK ]10 days to go: 10 things to know for the Early Signing Period (247Sports)

quote:

College football’s second-ever Early Signing Period (Dec. 19-21) is within sight. While the first Wednesday in February will always have a special place in our hearts, this period is essentially the new signing day — last year, 80 percent of committed prospects signed, and 65 percent of the entire class came off the board, including 279 of 369 four and five-stars in the 247Sports Composite Player Ranking.

We now have an idea what to expect, but it still seems like we’re in for several surprises. Here are 10 storylines to follow. The 247Sports Composite ranking is used in parenthesis.

Alabama’s run at history

The Crimson Tide took two more big steps on Saturday night towards the greatest recruiting class in 247Sports Composite history, flipping the nation’s No. 1 safety in five-star Daxton Hill from Michigan shortly before turning Top247 cornerback Jeffery Carter away from Texas A&M. With Hill and Carter in the fold, they add to the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class, upping Alabama’s point total to 304.52.

As Nick Saban and his staff run away with the recruiting championship this year, the only question is if they can catch the bar set by the Florida class in 2010 that finished with a mark of 324.62. I expect this Crimson Tide class to surpass that group Urban Meyer signed, and do so with a cushion.

Five-stars still considering a future in Tuscaloosa include defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux, running back Trey Sanders, defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher, offensive tackle Darnell Wright, linebacker Nakobe Dean, offensive tackle Evan Neal and center Clay Webb — and that’s just a portion of the ballyhooed prospects pondering playing for the defending national champs...

Metchie is the headscratcher in this class IMO.

He is a headstratcher until we cant sign a WR that will sign early or is a grade risk and we end up with nothing.

Looks like Turnage and Hellams both had very positive reactions to yesterday’s commitments. IMO Christian Williams is the most likely to decommit from the DB group and Robinson follows Locks to MD.

Add:

Sanders
Neal
Sopsher
Dean
2-3 of Webb/Thibs/Bogle/To’oto’o

Christian Williams is going to be in it too, but after last night I don't know if he'll sign with us

Can someone catch me up on this rumor. Why wouldnt we have room for him?

Bama's class is too full to take everyone Bama wants to add to the class (see 2nd post in this thread). Some of those targets aren't signing early, e.g., Sopsher, To'oto'o, Bogle. Bama added two DBs last night who are better than him.

Williams doesn't plan to sign early. It's just hard to tell at this point whether Williams will sign with Bama in February. Keilan Robinson is another one who's not signing early and might not sign with Bama in February. But even after the early signing period, Williams and Robinson might remain committed for a while. We'll see.

I dont think its an rumor. Someone is either leaving, not qualifying, or not enrolling on time.

Does anyone have any opinions on who are the "can't miss, instant impact" offensive skill players in the 2020 class? I feel like we need to hit on 2 or 3 of those type guys next year. Anybody seen so tape of guys you are really excited about and hope we get?

I think Roydell and Dazalin can be impact players epecially with the way the offense looks now.

Do you think they are like Cooper, Waddle, Najee and guys like that who would have been on the field regardless of where they went? Those are the type of guys I'm thinking about or do you think they will contribute primarly because of our offense setup right now?

Steve Wiltfong:

After speaking to a source with knowledge of five-star offensive lineman Clay Webb's recruitment, I still like Georgia for the Oxford (Ala.) High blue-chipper.

Demond Demas will be our Texas A&M flip next year. That is my prediction.

Regarding Webb, Wiltfong also said, "I wouldn't celebrate a commitment yet. I like UGA right now based on the folks I've talked to but we shall see soon."

Tim Watts and a couple of top insiders are saying they don't know on Webb, but that both sides are confident. It's quite possible that they already know but aren't going to spill it before Clay's announcement. It's also possible that Webb is torn and hasn't yet decided.

Something to keep in mind: When 247Sports guys use the words "source with knowledge of the recruitment" the source might be someone like the kid's HS coach or another 247Sports mod who's simply making an educated guess.
