Theo Wease

The contenders:
Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Ohio State, LSU, TCU, Texas A&M, among others

Breakdown: A one-time Oklahoma commit, Wease is one of the top players in the country and has the offer list to match. Depending on the month, a plethora of schools are at the top of Wease’s list, with the Sooners being one of the few constants throughout. Expect the in-state schools to play a major factor as we head into the spring and there to be plenty of twists and turns before Wease finally signs his letter-of-intent.

The contenders:
Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas A&M, among others

Breakdown: Henderson has already made two commitments during his recruitment, first pledging to Oklahoma in early 2017 before backing off that pledge and then committing to Oregon in July before re-opening his recruitment in November. Henderson recently said he’s focused on the Sooners, Tide and Aggies, and has already set his official visit to Norman in April. Will he end up back in the fold with Oklahoma or end up in the SEC with the Tide or Aggies? Only time will tell.

OVERVIEW

A myriad of injuries at the linebacker position last season might have come as a blessing in disguise for Alabama. While the Crimson Tide will need to find replacements for departing starters in Rashaan Evans and Shaun Dion Hamilton, it has several capable and experienced options ready to step in.

A pair of former five-stars in Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses are the most likely to replace Evans and Hamilton in the middle. Wilson broke his foot against LSU last season, the same game that saw Hamilton suffer a season-ending knee injury. Moses filled in at Mike linebacker in both players’ absence before Wilson returned in time to start both of Alabama’s playoff games.

Alabama will also have all its outside linebackers back to full strength. Last season, Terrell Lewis and Christian Miller missed most of the regular season after sustaining serious injuries in the opening game against Florida State. Anfernee Jennings was also injured in the opener, causing him to miss the next two weeks. He then injured his knee in the Sugar Bowl, forcing him to miss the national championship game. All three outside linebackers will be back next season, providing Alabama with a dangerous pass rush.

Five-star freshman Eyabi Anoma, who is built in the same mold as Lewis and former Alabama pass rusher Tim Williams, should add to that attack. Sophomores VanDarius Cowan and Christopher Smith are also poised for breakout seasons.

RECRUITING BOARD AT LINEBACKER

Alabama has a rich history of producing elite linebackers including three Butkus award winners during Nick Saban's tenure in Tuscaloosa. Those players include Rolando McClain, C.J. Mosley and Reuben Foster. Alabama had a small linebacker class in 2018 with Eyabi Anoma, five-star from St. Francis in Baltimore and Jaylen Moody, two-star from Conway High School in South Carolina. Anoma is recruited as an outside linebacker and Moody is set to play inside.

The number of linebacker recruits in 2019 will definitely increase. Alabama has an early commitment from King Mwikuta, Rivals100 linebacker from Troup County High School in LaGrange, Georgia. Former Alabama All-American, Reuben Foster, played for Troup County from his freshman to junior year before transferring to Auburn High School. Alabama expects to add at least three more linebackers, possibly four to the mix.

Christian Harris, three-star linebacker from University Lab School in Baton Rouge, is very high on the Tide's wish list. Harris plays wide receiver and safety for his high school team. Most schools are recruiting the 6-foot1.5, 225-pound athlete at linebacker. Harris named Alabama as his favorite after visiting Tuscaloosa for Junior Day last weekend. He recently added new offers from Florida, Georgia and LSU.

Alabama will likely sign a junior college linebacker. The early favorite to land in the class is Lakia Henry from Dodge City Community College in Kansas. The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder is considered as one of the best junior college players in the country.

Alabama has some early great options at the position. This is an important position especially for depth and talent at all the linebacker positions in the future in Tuscaloosa.

With the great HS LB targets Bama is likely to land, they may not take a juco LB (Henry).

The updated Top Targets list posted above is kept in the 2nd post of this thread.

Additions: RB Steele Chambers, DE Jaren Handy, DE Justin Eboigbe, LB Mohamoud Diabate, DB Cortez Andrews and DB Trikweze Bridges.

Deletions: None.

Note: The max Bama can sign in the 2019 cycle (excluding grey & blueshirts) drops from 28 to 27 because grad transfer QB Gardner Minshew will be an Initial Counter against one of the 3 unused spots in the 2018 class.

Tennessee plans to host Patrick Lucas, who would ‘take pride’ in helping rebuild Vols

quote:

Hosting Patrick Lucas

Tennessee has been hosting plenty of big recruiting names in the Class of 2019 the past few weeks. The list will include defensive tackle Patrick Lucas this weekend.

Lucas received an offer from Tennessee in late January and has been on the Vols’ radar since. He speaks with defensive line coach Tracy Rocker the most from the Vols.

Lucas is going on the trip with pretty normal expectations for the weekend.

“A great experience and a feel for Tennessee,” Lucas told SEC Country. “I’ve never been up there before. So, get some new scenery.”

The Wetumpka, Ala., native will receive the grand tour of the facilities, campus and Neyland Stadium.

The coaching staff pushes a similar message to Lucas as it does the other recruiting targets: “Come to Tennessee and help rebuild the program into something special.”

“It would be appealing,” Lucas said. “It’d be fun to start something new at a program that was elite back in the day. [Coach Jeremy Pruitt] wants to get it back to where it was. I would take pride in doing that.”

Lucas also takes pride in making a difference on the field. He wants to play and make an early impact, which could be a positive for the Vols depending on how the defensive tackle position looks in 2018.

“Playing time and the depth chart will be factors,” Lucas said. “Will I have a chance and possibly play?

“Even without that, it’ll be how I feel on campus. Do I feel at home is the main thing.”

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound defensive tackle fits the role Pruitt wants from the position: a stout lineman who can fit through blocks and stop the run in the middle. He believes he can bring this to any school along with a personality that can help team chemistry.

“I bring a lot of energy,” Lucas said. “Chasing plays downfield with my motor to keep going. Even if I’m tired, to keep going.

“I like to laugh, too. Bring some sense of humor.”

Lucas rates as a 3-star prospect and the No. 33 defensive tackle in the class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. With his size and motor, it’s not out of the question that he can become a 4-star prospect with a solid summer and fall.

Pruitt and the staff are certainly high on him.

Completion for Patrick Lucas

Lucas told SEC Country the Vols are among the school recruiting him the hardest. Florida and Georgia Tech round out the list.

He has already visited Auburn, UAB and Alabama, though the Crimson Tide have not extended an offer.

I get the sense the rising senior would place Alabama near the top of his list if it offered. He came away very impressed with Alabama on his visit last weekend. How Alabama trains its players to stay injury free and keep them on the field stood out the most.

Lucas plans to check out Florida and possibly Georgia Tech before the summer. There aren’t any plans to date.

Tennessee getting in early on Lucas can pay dividends down the line. The Vols struck out on a number of top recruits in 2018 because there wasn’t enough time to build strong enough relationships.

Even if an Alabama joins Lucas’ recruitment, the Vols will always have the edge that they pursued him earlier.
