Top Offensive Players

Tua Tagovailoa – Tua deserves a category all to himself. The entire college football world is buzzing about him and he has never come close to playing a full college game. Listing his Ole Miss stats is not necessary. The only surprises from Tua at this point are when he doesn’t make a great play.

The three-headed monster at Running Back; Damien, Najee and Josh – Combined, they got 27 touches. The result was 260 yards, including the kick returns by Jacobs.

Jerry Jeudy – Jeudy splits time with Jaylen Waddle which reduces his opportunities to be targeted. Against Ole Miss, Devonta Smith and Henry Ruggs got over 50 snaps. Jeudy was in for only 37 plays. During which he caught three passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

Jonah Williams – Jonah does pass blocking and run blocking exceptionally well. He was superb against Ole Miss.
Irv Smith Jr. – Smith is a tight end who can block, and catch passes like a wide receiver. He had three receptions for 42 yards and one touchdown.

A shorter list of encouraging performances

Jalen Hurts – He showed against Ole Miss he is an improved quarterback.

Jaylen Waddle – He only stood out on two plays but it was two impressive plays. One was a punt return for 37 yards, the other a pass reception for 30 yards.
Patrick Surtain Jr. – His lone stat was a single tackle but he went toe-to-toe with CFB’s top receivers.
Anfernee Jennings – Two tackles and half a sack, and more importantly, he looked to be getting his speed back.
Alex Leatherwood and Ross Piersbacher – Both turned in strong performances in pass protection.

Josh McMillon – Josh made three tackles and is looking more like a capable run stopper at inside linebacker.
We close with an added observation.

The 2018 coaching staff is doing a great job. Based on the Ole Miss game, Mike Locksley, Dan Enos and Tosh Lupoi deserve added recognition.

Alabama Football remains Kings of SEC and college football

SEC football is back at the national forefront as the best conference in the nation. Alabama football remains the overwhelmingly dominant, powerful force of the conference and country.
The first week of college football is complete. The Southeastern Conference finished 13-1 with the only loss belonging to Tennessee. The SEC West was 7-0 along with two Top 10 victories. Seven SEC schools ranked in the Top 25. Again, Alabama football annihilated Louisville 51-14 remaining atop the summit of college football.

LSU dominated a vastly overrated Miami Hurricanes squad. Auburn brawled with Pac-12 favorite Washington. Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Arkansas disposed of their lightweight opponents.

Oklahoma devastated an overmatched Florida Atlantic squad. Ohio State ran up the score on a hapless Oregon State team. Lastly, Clemson dusted a doomed Furman.

Before naive student bodies start raising “We Want Bama” signs, beware of the wrath that comes behind it.

Destructive Defense

Louisville entered Saturday night’s contest as a Top 40 team. Heisman winning quarterback Lamar Jackson’s departure to the NFL draft significantly weakened the Cardinals offense. Unfortunately, his replacement, statuesque Jawon “Puma” Pass’ first start occurred against the defending national champions. Tosh Lupoi’s defense suffocated the sophomore quarterback. The Cardinals’ non-existent running game held to 16 yards allowed the defense to tee off relentlessly on the quarterback.

On Training Days: Rolling with the Tide, Saban mentioned, “everybody wants to be beasts but are not everyone is willing to do what the beasts do.”

A few examples of beast mode plays:

Inside linebacker Dylan Moses impressively darted down the field and caught Louisville’s speedy wide receiver Seth Dawkins from behind.

Shyheim Carter delivered a pick six.

Deionte Thompson resembled an All American at free safety by making plays all over the field.

Quinnen Williams consistently found himself in the quarterback’s lap producing six tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and a quarterback hurry.

There were plenty of errors made but expect Lupoi and Saban’s keen attention to detail to limit them moving forward.

Expect the beleaguered beasts on defense to continue their bloodthirsty hunt for the rest of the season.

Lethal offensive weapons

Kirk Herbstreit insisted Tua made Alabama’s offense unstoppable. No hyperbole.

Small sample size be damned.

After a game and a half, Tua Tagovailoa’s quarterback play is as beautiful as Michaelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel. He completed 12 passes to eight different receivers. The lefty even scored himself on a nine-yard touchdown run. Tua’s passes were on the money including a 49-yard strike to freshman receiver Jaylen Waddle. His innate ability to scramble and extend plays is extraordinarily unique. The Crimson Tide scored on five out of six possessions in 12:28 of game time with Tagovailoa under center. The only drive stalled due to Devonta Smith’s fumble.

Tua’s 98.8 quarterback passer rating leads all FBS quarterbacks after week one. Tagovailoa’s efforts in the second half of the championship game resulted in a 90.1 QBR, third highest ever in a title game behind Deshaun Watson who had a 93.2 in 2016 and 91.4 in 2017. Last season’s Heisman winner, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, finished the season at 92.6.

The sophomore’s passer rating against Louisville was 235.4 with 14.2 per pass attempt. He was three for three on 20+ yard attempts. Tua has averaged a touchdown pass every 4.6 times he throws a pass. He definitely moves the needle.

The offense flowed as effortlessly as Lake Tuscaloosa. Playmakers litter the field at every offensive position.

A thorn in the Tide’s side for several seasons, special teams now appear exceptional with playmakers Josh Jacobs and Jaylen Waddle.

Jacobs returned a kickoff 77 yards for a score. Waddle dazzled as a punt returner and receiver earning SEC Freshman of the week with 80 yards on four returns with an additional 66 receiving yards.

Dynasty not stopping anytime soon

Alabama tied The Ohio State University for most appearances at number one in the Associated Press with 105 weeks. In the coaches poll, Alabama received 59 first-place votes out of 63 voting coaches.

After Saban named Tua the starter for their upcoming game against Arkansas State, it became crystal clear that the sophomore quarterback is the best quarterback to lead Alabama to another title.

The road through the SEC appears unsympathetic right now, but Alabama is the only team to navigate this unchartered course. Nick Saban’s Darth Vader chokehold on college football continues to tighten. Every fanbase despises Alabama football’s dominance. However, the Crimson Tide is not going anywhere and will remain college football’s most hated team.

As Scarface’s Tony Montana drunkenly bellowed as he left a stylish Miami restaurant, ” Say goodnight to the bad guy because you will never see a bad guy like this again.”

Let the Crimson Tide fatigue continue because they are here for another year.

Alabama football is the team everyone loves to hate. The utter dominance displayed by Alabama in college football will never happen again.

THE STORYLINE

Trey Sanders continues to work through the twists and turns of his recruitment, this past weekend taking a trip to Texas to see the Longhorns thrash USC.

The five-star running back from Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy had been committed to Alabama early in his recruitment and it looked like the Crimson Tide was going to add yet another five-star to its already loaded team.

But Sanders backed off that pledge and now it sounds as if Florida could be the school to beat as he’s developed a great relationship with that coaching staff and his brother is a junior college transfer for the Gators. That could be a huge bonus to get the five-star to Gainesville.

But Sanders has now taken multiple visits to Austin, and Texas continues to stick around in his recruitment. Could the Longhorns land the five-star running back from IMG Academy or will Sanders stay in the Southeast?

FIRST TAKE: JASON SUCHOMEL, ORANGEBLOODS.COM

"Sanders is a tough recruit to read because he doesn't talk much, and when he does, he doesn't really tip his hand on where he might be leaning. But he's now taken two visits to Texas – one an unofficial visit over the summer and one an official visit for UT's win over Southern Cal – so that alone would seem to indicate that his interest in the Longhorns is strong.

"Sanders has told other recruits that Texas is very high on his list and given indications behind the scenes that the Longhorns are major players for his commitment. Can Texas hold off the likes of Alabama or Florida in the long run? That's tough to say, and I still favor him staying in the Southeast, but I do think Texas has a shot in this one."

SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM

“A lot of people think it's Florida because his brother is there. It’s good that he’s visited Texas, it’s good that he has a comfort level there. But I think they’re a little bit of a long shot right now. One of the final three isn’t bad but he’s probably going to end up at Florida or re-commit to Alabama.”

Midwest Spotlight: Whose stock is on the move?

quote:

Some states are as far as five weeks into the 2018 high school football season. So, who has looked good in the early stages? We examine the Midwest region to find several early season standouts in the 2019 class whose stock could be on the move.

STOCK DOWN

quote:

Daxton Hill

There are no final determinations made about prospect rankings yet – not until we have done evaluations of the entire season – but if we are talking about prospects who did not play up to expectations when we saw them, Hill is going to be on that list.

Hill’s Booker T. Washington team was routed by Horn Lake (Miss.) High at the Battle on the Border event in Louisiana on Sept. 7 by a final of 38-7. It’s not that his team was on the losing end of the contest, but that Hill did not really do anything to make you stand up and take notice and a five-star should not be hard to find on the field. We will be back to watch Hill later this season, though, and will do a full evaluation of senior film before the next rankings update.

Best Available: Ten athletes still on the board

quote:

Nearly 75 percent of the Rivals250 in the class of 2019 were committed to college programs entering their senior year. That leaves a very small pool of potential prospects as programs gear up for the Early Signing Period, which starts on Dec. 19. This week we take a position-by-position look at the top prospects still on the board.

Quavaris Crouch

The precarious history of the No. 1 spot in the 2019 class is evidenced by Crouch, who at one time sat on that lofty perch, but now checks in at No. 9 in the Rivals100. Crouch is a unique athlete prospect, with potential at both running back and linebacker. The two-way athlete has started to kick the stretch run of his recruitment into gear with official visits being scheduled to Clemson, Michigan and Florida State. Alabama, NC State, South Carolina, Tennessee and USC are also still involved.

Devonta Lee

At the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas back in 2017, Lee proved to be a ball-hawking safety, leading the event with three interceptions on the day. That ability to catch the football, however, has several schools looking at the 6-foot-2 prospect as a wide receiver in college. That is the position for which the home-state LSU Tigers are recruiting Lee and they are considered the team to beat in this recruitment, but no decision time-frame has been set and other schools are still involved.

Wandale Robinson

An impressive off-season led to Robinson’s stock skyrocketing prior to his senior season. The Kentucky native got to work quickly with recruiting, taking official visits to Michigan and Purdue in June, and kicking off the college football season with an official visit to Nebraska Aug. 31. What’s interesting about Robinson is that his future position possibilities are all on offense. A tremendous slot receiver, he has a frame and skill set that would also fit well at running back.
