After we finished #7 and missed on most of our NSD targets, I think it's more justified now than when we had a string of #1 classes.
It was the first year with the early signing period. That's one factor. Some of the staff had become stale recruiters. That's two.
Saban and crew have learned better how to handle the early signing period and virtually the entire staff has been turned over with better recruiting being the focus. I think we'll be good to go.

Prospects that earned their stripes at Rivals 3 Stripe Camp in Mobile (segments)
quote:
MOBILE, Ala. — The 2018 Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas rolling into Mobile on Sunday, with just under 200 of the best college football prospects in the South turning out to compete. With so much talent on hand, there were plenty of impressive performances, but only a select few can win position MVPs or earn a much-coveted invite to the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas. We run through the players who won awards and earned their stripes at Sunday’s event.

Paul Tyson earned his stripes Sunday at the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas.

QUARTERBACK MVP
Paul Tyson has seen his recruitment explode in recent months and he showed why on Sunday. After a slow start to the day he picked things up and was more impressive and capped it off by shining against the events best defensive backs. Alabama is a major factor in his recruitment, as are programs like Kentucky, LSU, Michigan and Notre Dame.

ALABAMA
Sunday’s camp took place on the heels on Alabama’s junior day. That resulted in a number of players arriving in Mobile with the Crimson Tide on the brain and discussing the day in Tuscaloosa. Elite class-of-2020 defensive tackle prospect McKinnley Jackson arrived at the event rocking a crimson Alabama shirt and said he remains high on the Tide, from whom he already holds an offer.
The defending national champs remain the premier program in the state, and the buzz around Nick Saban’s program isn’t going anywhere. Kardell Thomas, an LSU commit who took home MVP honors, is still seriously considering Alabama. Chester Kimbrough, who recently scored an Alabama offer, also showed well at camp.

SOME ALABAMA BUZZ AROUND FORMER LSU COMMIT
One of the last prospects to arrive Sunday was George County (Miss.) 2020 defensive lineman McKinnley Jackson. He arrived in grand fashion. The future Rivals 100 talent recently decommitted from LSU and re-opened his recruitment.
Alabama has been in this race since offering the 6-foot-3, 317-pound phenom and he showed up in Crimson Tide gear. He is fresh off a weekend visit to Tuscaloosa where he spent a lot of time with new defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski.
LSU is still in this race, as are other schools, but Alabama may have a little momentum. There was some chatter behind the scenes about that Sunday. You can bet many schools are going to be fighting to get in the race for this young man.

QUARTERBACK STRENGTH
The quarterback position did not stand out at either of the first two 3 Stripe Camp events in 2018, but that wasn't the case in Mobile. Birmingham (AL) Hewitt-Trussville signal caller Paul Tyson was sharp from start to finish and he walked away with the MVP hardware.
There were others that gave him a run for it though. Staying in Alabama, Sheldon Layman was playing on his home field at McGill-Toolen and he definitely had his moments. Another local quarterback, Jackson Burkhalter from Spanish Fort is a 2020 prospect to keep an eye on. He received his first offer from UAB a few days ago.
Going out of state, KJ Jefferson of Sardis (Miss.) North Panola and Lance Legendre of New Orleans (La.) Warren Easton showed big arms and are athletic, big guys at quarterback. Another 2020 quarterback who threw some great deep balls was TJ Finley of Ponchatoula (La.) and he has great size as well.
This was a very strong group today, despite the wet, rainy conditions.

COX WAS RIGHT AT HOME
Defensive lineman LeDarrius Cox was on his home turf and he shined from start to finish. Cox is someone who jumps out immediately with his 6-foot-4, 310-pound frame.
The McGill-Toolen star just added an offer from Texas A&M Friday, visited Georgia Saturday and is emerging as one of the top interior defensive linemen in the South.
He definitely made his case for a fourth star Sunday with his combination of quickness and pure power. He flashed the ability to fire off the ball and get to the quarterback during the one-on-one session.
Cox is set to visit Tennessee next weekend and do not be surprised if more offers roll in for him He is a quiet young man who was soaking up the coaching and when his number was called, he got after it and impressed.

Alabama’s QB plans in 2019 class start with two prospects connected to Crimson Tide
Taulia Tagovailoa, a top target in the 2019 class.
Taulia Tagovailoa, a top target in the 2019 class.
quote:
Alabama wrapped up its 2018 recruiting class with 19 signees, which was the seventh-ranked class in the country and second-best in the SEC, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Full attention now turns to the 2019 class. Over the next two weeks, SEC Country will look at each position group on offense and defense for the Class of 2019. Here, we start with quarterbacks.
The breakdown: The Crimson Tide didn’t sign a quarterback in the last recruiting cycle, which wasn’t too surprising when you look at the current depth chart.
The team is currently recruiting East Carolina grad transfer Gardner Minshew, who visited this past weekend. Minshew would count against the 2018 class if he did sign with the Tide.
Alabama didn’t have the luxury of a couple of elite prospects within its state borders in the 2018 class, but that changes in the 2019 class.

That brings us to the team’s top 2019 targets in Taulia Tagovailoa, a 4-star prospect from Thompson High School (Alabaster, Ala.) and Paul Tyson, a 4-star prospect from Hewitt-Trussville (Trussville, Ala.).
Taulia is Tua’s little brother, while Tyson is the great-grandson of Bear Bryant. The expectations both players will have from the fan base, and possibly themselves, if they do choose Alabama will be quite enormous, and it does allow the possibility of one or both quarterbacks choosing other schools.
In Taulia’s case, he didn’t attend the same high school as his brother when the family lived in Hawaii. That was so Taulia could have the possibility to start elsewhere while Tua started for his school.
I’ve had several conversations with the family over the past year that would suggest that Taulia automatically following his brother to Alabama is not the slam dunk that fans may think it is. Yes, the family moved to Alabama, but, no, it doesn’t guarantee Taulia’s already sealed with the Tide. This recruitment is open.

I do think Alabama has a better chance at signing Tyson as of now. He has been to games at Bryant-Denny his entire life. His great-grandfather’s statue is right outside of the stadium that is partly named after him. He also has a teammate in 5-star tackle Pierce Quick who’s committed to the Tide.
Tyson has taken visits elsewhere but I think the family’s history is going to be too much for him to go anywhere other than Alabama.
So, why hasn’t either one committed already? Well, Alabama normally waits to take a QB until the summer. The Tide usually brings in numerous QBs to one of their first summer camp sessions in June where they put the signal-callers through various drills and test their knowledge on the whiteboard by drawing up plays and dissecting schemes. We’ll see if that’s what Alabama does this year in a unique situation with Tagovailoa and Tyson on the board.
What if Alabama misses on one or both prospects? The Tide has already offered the following 4-star prospects: Oklahoma commit Spencer Rattler, Grant Gunnell, Sam Howell, Wisconsin commit Graham Mertz, Jayden Daniels, Michael Johnson Jr. and 3-star prospects Jacob Conover, Colorado commit Ty Evans, Lance LeGendre, Jalon Jones, Garrett Schrader and John Rhys Plumlee.
