Terrible evaluations by 247. You expect that type of incompetence from Rivals these days but it’s truly sad to see coming from 247.

Seems like they are preemptively trying to diminish Bama's final score.

Long way to go before final rankings. Senior seasons, all star games yet to be played.

True, but still terrible. Even guys who had positive showings at recent camps dropped. Also, to put more stock in a 3 day camp than their entire playing career and previous camps that they dominated seems VERY short-sighted. Hell, with Saban’s record of talent evaluation, pretty much any player he signs should automatically place them in the top 200 players or so in the country. To think they know more than Saban is a bit idiotic.

It’s difficult to judge a player when he can’t compete as adequately as others. It’s Alabama Louisiana and Mississippi high school rules. This happens every year.

Stupid rule. They should be allowed to compete in pads at events such as The Opening. It's only a day or two in pads.

I have the day off over here so I'm going to scour the net to find whatever recruiting news I can. Barton Simmons started a thread on 247 detailing the newest rankings release so I'm sure I'll find some gems in there.
Y'all sleep easy.

From an Ohio State fan in the aforementioned thread:

Marcus Washington dropped from top 75 player to the #574 player in the country....in one camp? Did he lose a hand? Kill someone?

Barton Simmons on why Travon Walker was moved up to a 5-star despite a subpar Opening showing:
quote:
It's not about what he did at The Opening. It's about reassessing what we value at defensive tackle. We are less excited about the 330 pounder that wins a lot of camp 1on1s. More interested in athletes, with multisport backgrouonds with the room to bulk up who play with great motor in high school. Walker is all of that. So he was fine at The Opening Finals but that's not what drove his bump. He's a raw, lean, unique athlete who has great film.

Gotta admit, that's a admirable drop.

A question from one of our Bama fans, answered by another Bama fan:
quote:
Barton and Steve, what is your justification for Shane Lee dropping over 100 spots? Criminal.
He made the all-defensive team at the Opening.......but they didn't like his shoe choice and that shows poor taste. So they didn't really have a choice but to drop him.

10 takeaways from The Opening recruiting showcase
quote:
More than 150 of the nation's best football prospects, including more than a half-dozen from Alabama, reported to The Opening 2018 a week ago.
The players spent four days at The Star in Frisco, Texas and worked with instructors, many of whom are former NFL stars, and competed in a 7on7 tournament. Some, but not all, of the workouts were open to the media, and all meetings were behind closed doors.
The Opening ended Tuesday and after a few days of reflection, here's a look at 10 takeaways from the event:

1) Bama and Auburn will happy with the Elite 11 QBs
Two Alabama quarterbacks, Thompson senior and Alabama commit Taulia Tagovailoa and Pinson Valley senior and Auburn commit Bo Nix, looked sharp during the four days at The Opening.
The ball jumps out of Tagovailoa's hand with surprising zip for a 5-foot-11 player, and Nix oozes the kind of charisma every team looks for in a quarterback.
There are no guarantees either will eventually play in the NFL, or even start in college, but both showed the tantalizing potential that made them 4-star recruits.
Remember, Tagovailoa won the Long Toss competition by launching a football 66 yards, and Nix (pictured above) was second with a throw of 64 yards.

4) Evan Neal is amazing
Offensive lineman Evan Neal (No. 78 above) was the biggest player at The Opening, measured at 6-foot-7 1/2 and 360 pounds (after being listed as big as 391 in the past).
Could a guy that big possess the quickness to block defensive ends who are at least 100 pounds lighter? Anyone who worried shouldn't.
In 1-on-1s against much smaller and quicker defensive ends, he showed plenty of quickness and used his reach to keep defensive ends at bay while also showing scary aggression when he opted to bury opponents to end the drill. Imagine being driven to the turf by a 360-pounder.

5) George Pickens can do otherworldly things
Hoover receiver George Pickens drew an Auburn offer before he scored a varsity touchdown, thanks to a strong camp performance.
At The Opening, Pickens' 1-handed catch on the first day of the camp turned heads (see photo of it below), and he showed an amazing ability to pick up yardage chunks -- and make defenders miss -- during 7on7 action. While he needs to be more consistent, no player showed a greater ability to make acrobatic catches than Pickens.

6) Whoever gets Kayvon Thibodeaux is getting a star
The nation's No. 1-ranked player according to the 247sports Composite rankings, Thibodeaux looked like the closest thing to a can't-miss prospect at The Opening 2018.
At 6-foot-4 1/2 and 234 pounds, he showed the rare blend of agility, power, balance and quickness that make him the prototypical pass-rushing defensive end. It's easy to see his frame holding another 30 pounds.
Thibodeaux (No. 8 above) is from Oaks Christian (Calif.) High, which is why Southern Cal seems to be his most logical college destination, but Alabama, Florida State and LSU are also players in his recruitment.

7) Pierce Quick = Perfect ambassador for Alabama
Five-star Hewitt-Trussville offensive lineman Pierce Quick has been loud and proud about his desire to be a recruiter for Alabama.
It's one thing to want to do something, but another to be good at it.
Quick's possesses a quick wit and easy-going demeanor, two qualities needed when trying to persuade anyone to do anything. Striking the right balance between enthusiastic and pushy isn't easy, but Quick seemed to be walking that tightrope with ease at The Opening.

Alabama makes short list for nation's top 2020 prospect
quote:
Defensive end Bryan Bresee excelled at The Opening, showing why he's considered the top prospect in the Class of 2020.
Bresee, a 5-star prospect from Damascus, Maryland, has already made a visit to Alabama and came away impressed.
"It was good," he said at The Opening in Frisco, Texas. "I worked out with Coach Dunbar, who's not there anymore, but it was a good workout. I got to talk to Caoch Saban, so, yeah, it was a good time."
Bresee narrowed his list to 15 schools in late June, with Alabama making the cut along with SEC rivals Georgia, LSU, Florida and Texas A&M. The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder said Georgia commit Nolan Smith spent time recruiting him at The Opening and added he plans visits to Oklahoma and Florida, likely later this month.
Ohio State seems to be the leader in Bresee's recruitment, according to 247sports Crystal Ball Predictions.
Bresee said he'll likely announce a "top five-to-seven" this fall, but added he has made no decisions about his college destination or when he plans to make a commitment.
Alabama has found success recruiting the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas, including first-round pick and fellow defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, from Ashburn, Va.; offensive linemen Cyrus and Arie Kouandjio, from DeMatha Catholic in Hyattsville, Maryland, the same high school as 2018 commit Demarcco Hellams, a defensive back; and defensive back and kick returner Cyrus Jones, from Baltimore.
The current roster also features defensive back Trevon Diggs, from Gaithersburg, Md.; and signee Eyabi Anoma, from Baltimore.
"It's crazy. There's a bunch of people who go down there and love it," Bresee said. "It's a cool thing down there."
