It's official. Four-star wide receiver John Metchie, ranked the No. 41 receiver in the country and the sixth-best player from Maryland's 2019 class by 247Sports.com, has handed in his paperwork and will spend a post-graduate year at Peddie (Hightstown, N.J.), before ascending to one of the top football programs across the country. Peddie now jumps into the conversation for top receivers corps in the state, when you add the 6-foot, 195-pounder to big Marlyn Johnson -- a top regional recruit in his own right -- and speedy Maurice Bellan -- also an FBS-type talent. But let's get to know more about N.J.'s newcomer, who currently has two national programs on top, out of 25 offers, despite still being open to other schools like Rutgers.
How did Metchie end up at Peddie?
Metchie turned into one of the top receivers in the region while playing at St. James School in Hagerstown, Md. A top 300 player throughout the country, he currently checks in at No. 259, nationally.
“Coach Malleo and I really just found each other. I was looking for a school to go to for my last year and I kind of just found him in New Jersey. Peddie is such a Great football program and great school.”
What made Peddie a better fit?
“Really I guess it was the size. Peddie is a little bit better as a team. At Peddie, I’d be playing with a lot more kids that are going to the next level. It’s just the people I’d be surrounded with and the type of offense that Coach Malleo runs, it would be good for me.”

Metchie is a qualifier
Being that Metchie is qualified and could leave St. James and go straight to one of his top options, why has he elected to spend what will amount one semester at Peddie?
"My mom wants me to be 18 going into college," said Metchie who is currently a young rising senior.

How will he be utilized?
“He’ll probably use me either as a slot or at wideout. I can be a versatile receiver so I think he’ll be able to move me around a lot. I think we’ll be able to hit the quick, short stuff to get the ball in the receivers hands so that we as receivers can run. And I think with our receivers corps, we can also take the top off and go deep all the time.”
Where does Rutgers stand?
Metchie says Rutgers recruited him hard at one point, and the interest was recriprocated but cooled down once staff changes were made.
“I used to be recruited by Rutgers heavily. But then, a few of their coaches went their separate ways and got new coaching jobs. And since then, my interaction with them has kind of been less and less.”
However, he says he's open to interacting more with the school, and that he'd “absolutely” embrace a Rutgers recruitment, now that he’ll be spending so much time in New Jersey.

Metchie could be a lockdown corner
“I also play defense. I feel comfortable on defense. I think he’ll have me at corner or maybe at safety, moving around a little bit kind of covering their best receivers. Things like that.”
But where does he feel most comfortable?
“A lot of the schools talk to me about playing both ways. But at the end of the day, I think I’ll kind of stay on the offensive side of the ball.”
Metchie's greatest strengths in his words
Metchie generated 27 cathes for 616 yards and 11 TDs in 2017 and has 132 catches for 2,506 yards and 31 TDs for his career at St. James.
“I think versatility. Being able to move around a lot, the quickness after the catch. Especially my ability to run with the ball after the catch. I think that’s the biggest. And I think route running, being able to get myself open and all of that.”
Top receivers corps in N.J.?
“What’s crazy about that is I think we are gonna have one of the best receiver corps in the country, to be honest. We are gonna have such a dynamic group with height, speed, strength. I just think we’re gonna be able to do it all.”

Working out with the team
“I worked out with them a week or two ago. It was good, it was exciting. I definitely saw a lot of potential in what we could be. It was good to be able to work out with the team, get used to the team, get a feel for the players and all of that. So it was overall a good workout.”

How will all the pieces fit together?
“Honestly I don’t even know, especially because we are gonna have so many weapons on offense. Being able to run the ball, throw the ball, I’m excited to see how he uses all of us.”

Which 2 teams on top?
“I guess schools that would be standing out to me based off relationships and things I built with them would probably be Alabama and Penn State, so far.”

What traits are most important in a school?
"I think relationships definitely with the coaches and players. How well I feel at home at the school. Obviously competition. A place I can go and compete, compete with the team and compete against others teams. I think those will be the biggest things for me,” said Metchie, who also said he hopes to decide and announce towards the beginning of the season.

Older news but pretty interesting! I think he will join this class, hopefully with Jameson Williams who is a speed demon.

am i wrong in thinking they practice the lb's much like the o line. in that they move them around to familiarize them with each position?

Looks like Daxton Hill is spending time with fellow Tulsa native Josh Jacobs.

You're right. Most LBs get coaching and practice reps playing multiple (2, 3 or 4) LB positions. It takes more work and experience to be become really reliable at avoiding mistakes though.

Man there are so many DLineman gonna be left out this year. Any info on Leal? I seen his picture on the field . Probable wish list Sopsher, Tuitele, and Young! I don’t see Handy, or room for Ika . I love trevon Walker but he’s Clemson or Georgia bound.

Forgot about Pickering too!! Gosh too many good ones.
Posted on 6/17/18 at 1:30 pm to bloodtide 39
IMO Tuitele and Young are ours and just a matter of time.
I’m feeling good about our chances with Pickering right now especially with his mother enjoying the visit this week but it appears that he’s going to wait things out and see how his OV’s go.
Sopsher is a tough one because it looks like his recruitment will go the distance and we may have to consider turning away other good prospects like Siaki Ika or Stephon Wright.

We got another CB for Metchie from ND mod Tom Loy.
We also got a CB for Tuitele from Oregon mod Kevin Wade.

Might sound crazy, but I'm not sure we'd take the commitment of both Tuitele and Young right now. We're filling up REALLY quickly.

How did Dean’s visit go? Who’s next to commit?
Posted on 6/17/18 at 1:53 pm to Bama3714
Can’t see us not accepting Tuitele’s commitment but Young would make sense at this juncture. I bet we’ll find out soon enough about where we stand with Leal.

Have seen something EXTREMELY positive about Dean's visit from someone who tends to err to the side of optimism/homerism (but has really good sources). I want to hear it from someone else before I feel entirely confident about that.
Regardless, even before the visit, Rodney Orr has said Bama feels VERY good right now, even with him not committing until December. At the end of the day, the thinking is still that we'll be the team to beat. Too long of a relationship (with entire family) and too natural of a fit (mentality and playing time). Will ultimately be extremely difficult for Uga to overcome.

Haven't heard anything about Hill yet.

Do you feel we have a better chance with Sopsher and Young, then Tuitele and Young? Since we probably wouldn’t take all 3
