Big visits coming up for 2020 five-star D.J. Uiagalelei

quote:
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - D.J. Uiagalelei is a five-star quarterback in the 2020 class, a physical specimen who is one of the best players at his position regardless of class.
And the Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco standout is excited about upcoming trips to Alabama and Clemson.
Uiagalelei will visit both national powerhouses the week of June 10-15. The trip will start in Tuscaloosa and the five-star quarterback is excited.
“I’m just going out there, I’m going out with (Bosco assistant) coach Terry (Bullock) and I think a couple other coaches,” Uiagalelei said at the Steve Clarkson Quarterback Retreat. “I just want to see the facilities, talk to coach (Tosh) Lupoi, talk to the other coaches and see what Alabama is about. That’s the main thing - I just want to see it.”
There is no question Uiagalelei thinks it’s a big deal that Tua Tagovailoa could be the frontrunner to win the Alabama quarterback job, showing him that coach Nick Saban is going to play the best player at each position. Tagovailoa’s Hawaiian heritage could also be a bonus.
“That’s huge for me,” Uiagalelei said. “I said since Day 1 that Tua should be the starting quarterback. I saw it since Day 1. I watched the spring game on TV and I said, ‘Tua needs to be the starting quarterback right now.’ I’m glad he’ll (possibly) be the starter now.
“That’s really big to have the first Polynesian quarterback play there at Alabama, to play in the SEC and then to win a national championship so that’s huge.”
Clemson is also of serious intrigue to Uiagalelei, who’s been talking regularly with quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter.
“I’ve talked to coach Streeter for a while, for a couple months now,” Streeter said. “To go see it in person, I want to go see the stadium and all the facilities and see what Clemson is all about, too.
“I always notice their offense. Watching with (former Bosco assistant) coach Chad (Johnson), we watched game clips of it and it was exact same offense I used to run. It was so cool to see the offense and it’s somewhere I can fit.”
Other than the trips to Alabama and Clemson, Uiagalelei said he could be visiting Ohio State soon but is not certain yet.

What’s next for Alabama on recruiting trail after flurry of commitments
quote:
What else Alabama needs on the recruiting trail
The last two months for Alabama have been hectic for the Crimson Tide on the recruiting trail. Of the team’s 14 commitments, 11 of them have pledged to Alabama in either April or May.
Alabama has the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class, and I don’t think the Tide are going to finish below the top spot in this cycle after failing to finish No. 1 in 2018, which was the first time since 2010.
With 14 commitments, I believe there are 12 to 13 spots remaining. I still haven’t gotten clarity on whether Layne Hatcher, the quarterback who flipped from Arkansas State to Alabama over the weekend, is on scholarship right now. He may be offered one if either Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa or Mac Jones transfers.
But here’s a look at other players still in the mix for the Tide.

Quarterback
Alabama is set at the quarterback position in the 2019 class with 4-star prospects Paul Tyson and Taulia Tagovailoa locked in with their commitments. Those guys aren’t going anywhere. SEC Country will have full coverage of Tyson and Tagovailoa later this week at the Elite 11 in California.

Running back
All the skill positions are very unclear right now, and we may not have any clarity until the team hosts its camp sessions in June. Remember, with the new recruiting calendar, almost all of July, which is when the team used to have its recruiting camps, is a dead period, so no recruits will be allowed to have face-to-face contact with coaches.
Trey Sanders, the nation’s No. 1 running back who was once committed to Alabama, remains in the mix for the Crimson Tide. Sanders recently spoke with SEC Country. You can read that update here. I still think there’s a long shot to regaining his commitment after talking with sources at other schools. Jerrion Ealy, an Ole Miss commit, is still considering Alabama. He may be the team’s best option. Quavaris Crouch, a 5-star athlete, is being recruited as a running back, although he’s leaning toward playing linebacker. Several schools I’ve spoken with believe he has a better future on the offensive side of the ball. Keilan Robinson, a 4-star prospect from Washington, is also a name to know.
The team has also been trying to get in the mix for John Emery Jr. He doesn’t seem too interested in Alabama right now.
With several other positions of need, I think Alabama is going to end up taking only one running back this cycle.

Wide receiver
John Metchie, a 4-star prospect from Maryland, has Alabama in his top 2, along with Penn State. He has a close relationship with wide receivers coach Josh Gattis. Metchie is near the top of the Tide’s wish list at receiver.
The team is trying to flip Auburn wide receiver commit George Pickens. He recently said that he was done with visits elsewhere, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Expect him to be in Tuscaloosa next month.
Mycah Pittman, Nnamdi Adim-Madumere and Jameson Williams are other names to know right now. I was told that the crop of receivers, as a whole, just isn’t too impressive this cycle. This will likely be a position where several recruits vault to the top of the board after a good showing next month in camp, which is what Jaylen Waddle did last cycle for the Tide.
The Tide will get at least three receivers this cycle, and I’ve heard they would like to sign more than that. It may just come down to numbers at other positions.
Well that's interesting.

Tight end
Hudson Henry, the nation’s No. 1 tight end, visited Tuscaloosa in April, but it wasn’t enough for the Tide to make his top 5 list that he just put out. It’s not the end of the world. It’s likely he follows his brothers and father to Arkansas.
Keon Zipperer is a top target for the Tide, but he’s likely going to stay in the state of Florida and play his college football there.
Ethan Rae was offered recently and put Alabama in his group of top schools but not much is known about him right now.
I can’t see the team taking more than one tight end this cycle.

Offensive line
This offensive line class is going to be special for Alabama, and it likely will end up being the best on paper for the Crimson Tide.
The team already has commitments from 5-star tackle Pierce Quick and 4-star tackles Amari Kight and Tanner Bowles. The Tide are in good shape with 5-star center Clay Webb and 5-star tackles Darnell Wright and Kenyon Green. There’s an excellent chance the team lands two of three.
There are other names out there such as Javonne Shepherd, Stacey Wilkins and Xavier Truss, but I don’t see them in this class if Webb and Wright/Green join. Webb, Wright and Green have been the top targets for several months now.
Kamaar Bell, a 3-star guard, is also a name to know.
Five offensive linemen will likely sign with the Tide in February.

Defensive line
Like the offensive line, the defensive line class is going to be excellent, too. The team has commitments from 4-star prospects Antonio Alfano, Rashad Cheney Jr. and DJ Dale.
There are so many other defensive linemen who are high on Alabama right now such as Nathan Pickering, Byron Young, Jaren Handy, Faatui Tuitele, Ishmael Sopsher and Demarvin Leal.
I think six will be the number of defensive linemen the Tide sign. I’m not sure if Cheney’s spot in this class is going to remain safe if four or more of the names above want to join.
Tuitele, a 5-star defensive tackle from Hawaii, could end up being the team’s next commitment. He’s planning on making a decision before the start of his senior season. Alabama should be considered the favorite after Southern California was excluded from his top schools list.

Linebacker
Alabama currently has three commitments at linebacker in Shane Lee, Kevin Harris and King Mwikuta. The team will likely add two more. Some names to know include Nakobe Dean, Christian Harris, Kalen Deloach, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Vonta Bentley.
Dean is currently trending toward Georgia, but there’s a long way to go in his recruitment as he’s not planning on making a decision until December. He’ll take an official visit to Tuscaloosa next month. I’d be surprised if Harris didn’t end up committing to Alabama. Deloach is a top target for the Tide, but he keeps his recruitment pretty quiet. Thibodeaux said Alabama was the team to beat coming out of his visit in April, but I think it’s a tight battle with Florida State, Oregon and Southern Cal. Bentley is a backup option to Dean and Harris.

Defensive back
Alabama has commitments from 4-star cornerback Christian Williams and 4-star defensive back Brandon Turnage. Williams is planning on taking an official visits, but he won’t change his decision.
Turnage is also committed, but I don’t think he’s going to end up staying in this class, regardless of his comments saying he’s locked in with his decision.
Other defensive backs to know are Noa Pola-Gates, Jaylen McCollough, Jeffery Carter, Marcus Banks and Akeem Dent.

Kicker
Alabama has a commitment from Will Reichard, the nation’s No. 2 kicker. He’s locked in with his decision.

We got a CB for Noa Pola-Gates.

Alabama feels there at or near the top for Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Clay Webb will likely wait till December. I originally thought he wouldn’t but seems like he will. Also bama is obviously the heavy favorite and he recruits for the staff more then some commits.

Webb waiting until December really irks me for some reason. Guy is destined to play at Bama, just get it over with and help recruit this class, Clay. If he really is unsure at this point, we need to do a better job recruiting him. Our projected center is a senior this year and we put tons of guys in the NFL. Some of his best friends are already committed. Why drag this out for 6 more months?

LINK ]Nick Saban visit lit fire under top-100 ATH Mark-Antony Richards — and still does
(SEC Country)
(SEC Country)
quote:
WELLINGTON, FL — Top-100 overall athlete Mark-Antony Richards has been looking forward to his recruiting process since the early part of 2016.
His older brother, Ahmmon Richards, was in the heat of his recruitment at the time, with Alabama, Auburn and Miami giving him the full-court press. The U.S. Army All-American receiver took trips to all three schools before choosing the Hurricanes, but an in-home visit from Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban left a lasting impression on his wide-eyed sibling.
“Seeing Nick Saban walk through my house had me like, ‘Whoa.’ I couldn’t believe he was there to see my brother,” Richards told SEC Country. “[Miami coach] Mark Richt, too. You watch them on TV growing up and you never really think it’ll happen to you. But when they came into my house, I told myself, ‘I want them to come back again.’”
That they will. Richards is one of the nation’s most coveted athletes in the Class of 2019, with colleges recruiting him for both sides of the ball. He checks in as the No. 5 athlete in the 247Sports composite, and Rivals ranks him as the top all-purpose back in the country.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Richards holds nearly 20 offers, including Auburn and Miami, but Alabama has to yet to pull the trigger. Running backs coach Joe Pannunzio evaluated him twice this month at Wellington High School. Richards remains high on the Crimson Tide despite the delay on their offer, and it’s not just because Saban left him starstruck a couple years ago.
“I treat every offer like it’s my first school,” said Richards, who added LSU on May 15. “I don’t care if it’s Alabama or FAU, no disrespect to those programs. I really give every school a fair opportunity to recruit me because I’m just thankful for it all.
“Obviously an offer from Alabama would be huge and mean a lot to me personally. It’s something I’m working for and my coach thinks it will happen this summer. Mark Ingram was a big reason I started playing running back. I watched him growing up and he really introduced me to the position. Before that, I was a corner.”
Wellington coach Tom Abel first saw Richards play in eighth grade during a youth football game. Spectators told him to watch out for “Ahmmon’s brother” when he arrived at the field, and Richards quickly caught the attention of Abel. “I watched Mark weave his way down the sideline and take it to the house,” Abel said. “I was like, ‘Yeah, that kid is pretty special. Just like his brother.’ ”
Ahmmon Richards starred for Abel at Wellington, hauling in 144 receptions for 2,722 yards and 39 touchdowns in his final three years of high school. He was teammates with his younger brother as a senior, though it almost didn’t happen.
Abel planned to play Mark-Antony on junior varsity in 2015 because he wanted to groom the freshman a little bit. But the Wolverines had a running back shortage in practice one day, so Abel decided to call up the ninth grader and give him a shot.

“First play, he put his foot in the ground and took off,” Abel said. “I looked at our JV coach and said, ‘Yeah, he’s not going back down. He’s staying with us.’ We’ve had a great relationship ever since and he will be a four-year varsity player, just like his brother.”
And like his brother, Mark-Antony’s recruitment is expected to come down to the wire. He plans to announce his top 10 this summer and already those schools written down in his phone. “I’m not ready to release it yet,” he said with a smile.
Richards added that he will make his commitment after his senior season. He’s still in the process of figuring out what position he wants to play and which schools have the best scheme for his desired spot.
“That’s the most stressful part of being an athlete. My dream was to play running back in the NFL and in college, but sometimes you have to open your mind. When Ohio State tells you, ‘You’re a superstar corner,’ it really makes you think.
“You see [former OSU cornerback] Denzel Ward get drafted in the first round and you think, ‘I can do the same thing.’ But I’m trying to figure out what position I’m going to play. I’m still kind of undecided.”
Auburn and Miami are recruiting Richards for both sides of the ball, though the Hurricanes initially wanted him as a defensive back. Florida is selling Richards on being used like former Gators WR Percy Harvin, and Georgia also wants him as a receiver.
“There’s a lot of coaches who want him to play defense and a lot of coaches who want him to play offense,” Abel said. “I’m going to tell you wherever he goes, he could do either or. That’s not up to me, but the college coach and him whenever he picks a school.

“Now, I’m partial to offense. There’s a reason he’s the No. 1 all-purpose back in the nation. I love the way he runs and I’d love to see him play college ball on the offensive side, but that’s for him and his college coach to decide.”
Richards said his deciding factors will be how often he communicates with his potential head coach and position coach, the position they want him to play and how their system fits his skill set.
With a clear criteria in mind, he doesn’t believe the decision will be hard for him. “I think it’s going to be easy,” Richards said. “Seeing my brother go through it gives me an idea of what to do and what not to do. I’m going to do all the ‘to-do’ things and make it easy on myself.”
He claims no leaders at this time, but Miami is considered the favorite because of his brother being in Coral Gables. However, his coach dismisses that notion because of Ahmmon’s pro potential.
“He has the possibility of playing at the same school as his brother. Don’t know if he’ll have the possibility to play with his brother because he can go to the NFL after next season,” Abel said. “Miami is definitely appealing because of that, but Mark wants to cut his own path no matter where he goes.
“We went through the process with his brother and he saw how he handled it. The only thing I tell him all the time is, ‘Just be Mark.’ That's it."
