Cowan will definitely miss time. He failed a NCAA drug test and a 4 game suspension is likely the punishment. Good thing for him is he got his academics straight and busted his arse in practice, so he’s in higher regard with Saban then he was before spring.
Posted on 5/28/18 at 5:29 pm to Footballfan1234
I'm hearing he's likely actually facing a full year's suspension, unfortunately.
Posted on 5/28/18 at 5:43 pm to Bama3714
Geez was just speculating, didn’t know they get a full year.
Posted on 5/28/18 at 5:45 pm to Bama3714
When is an answer on the appeal expected?
Posted on 5/28/18 at 5:46 pm to Footballfan1234
I don't know all the details, but I've consistently heard it's likely a full year's suspension. Hopefully the appeal turns out well. He could sure help a lot.

If it was a internal drug test the punishment wouldn’t be near as severe.

I figured I’d bring some nuggets to this board.
Nakobe Dean is still very much leaning bama, his mom did love UGA but she loved bama as well and will leave it up to him. Dean is still silently committed to the staff but is still looking around the tide might lock it down publicly after this Ov.
Also bama is pushing extremely hard for Leal. Once the staff saw him, he shot up the board, will know more after the coming up visit.
Something is going on behind the scenes with Dent, the staff is pushing harder then any school and I was just told something was going on between Dent and bama. Interpret that how you wish.

Also Coach Pannuzio took over Deans recruitment. He was his primary recruiter until Kul got on staff.

I don't know, but he's pretty much spot on from what I've been hearing as well (although that's much more informative on Dent than anything Ive heard on him... I've only heard that we're trying to make a move for him). Our staff has gushed over Leal recently. He's considered right there with Alfano. If Alfano is #1 on the DL board, Leal is 1A. He seems to know what he's talking about.

Hank South says we will sign 28 players in this class.

Read the comments after the article and you'll see that Hank backed off on that. We now only have 26 Initial Counter spots available for 2019 signees. We had 28 as of NSD, because we had three unused IC spots from 2018. Since NSD, Musika and Hatcher have been added to the 2018 class, using two of those three previously unused 2018 IC spots. So, 26 is now the max.
ETA: I'll repost a copy of my post from yesterday that explains where our roster and recruiting numbers stand now. It also describes potential ways we might be able to take 1-2 more players.

Jesus. How many frickin times has Cowan tested hot since he's been on campus?

2018 Roster now at 85 scholarship players:
After 2018 NSD, the projected 2018 fall roster was at 85 scholarship players. The departure of Warmack and Kennedy and addition of Musika and Hatcher put UA's 2018 roster back at 85 scholarship players.
Where Bama's recruiting numbers now stand:
After 2018 NSD, we had 22 Initial Counters (incl. 1 greyshirt Parks and 2 blueshirts Bullovas and Brannon) in the 2018 recruiting cycle, leaving 3 unused 2018 IC spots. But Musika and Hatcher use 2 of those. The one remaining unused 2018 IC spot can be used to backcount a 2019 early enrollee into, and we'll have 2019's 25 IC spots. So, we can now sign only 26 in the 2019 cycle. Any 2019 cycle blueshirts or greyshirts would count against 2020's 25 IC spots.
There may be creative ways to take a 1-2 more players in the 2019 cycle. I'm not 100% certain about the NCAA rules, but it's my understanding that a football player who's on any non-football scholarship (e.g., endowment, another sport, academic, etc.) only count against the 25/85 limits if/when he first plays in a game.
If that's correct, it may be possible for Hatcher to be on a non-football scholarship initially, in order to sign another player. But there'd have to be room under the 25/85 limits to be able to play Hatcher if the need arose. Since all the 2019 IC spots would be used, he couldn't play until 2020. So, that's probably not a viable option for him. But it might be viable for Jerrion Ealy via a baseball scholarship if Bama lands him and he's willing to not play in FB games until 2020.
Another potential way to take and sign another 2019 recruit might be if Paul Tyson's family pays his way, whereby he'd be a walk-on. But I've heard nothing more than speculation about that.
Again, I'm not 100% certain of the NCAA rules in these areas, and I haven't seen any indications that Hatcher or Tyson won't be given football scholarships.

Observations from the Trendsetters group at QB Retreat
quote:
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Many of the nation's top college quarterbacks gathered at Palisades High School this weekend to take on roles as counselors in Steve Clarkson's QB Retreat, a two-day camp that has become a staple of the offseason camp circuit.
The event also drew several talented quarterback prospects that are working their way up the ranks, forming a Trendsetters group that competed in drills throughout the weekend. Here is a look at some of the attendees:

TAULIA TAGOVAILOA
Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson four-star quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa was a late arrival to the camp as he made a pit stop on his way back to the mainland from Hawaii, but he didn't show any rust. In fact, the Alabama commit pierced the gusty conditions with his strong arm, was accurate rolling out to either side and showed off the accuracy that should give Crimson Tide fans optimism that the second Tagovailoa brother could be just as good as the first.

DJ UIAGALELEI
DJ Uiagalelei, the top-rated pro-style quarterback in the 2020 class, didn't disappoint, as only Florida sophomore Feleipe Franks out-muscled him (by a single yard) in the longest throw competition among the attendees. Uiagalelei was precise on his attempts the perimeter, made some wow throws to the corner of the end zone and showed off his mobility on roll out drills. The class of 2020 standout is set to visit Alabama and Clemson next month, but nearby USC holds a big lead in the Crystal Ball predictions with 89 percent of the votes.

Bama offers 2021 QB
Preston Stone Highlights
quote:
Alabama has yet to secure a commitment from a quarterback in the 2020 class, but it's already put an offer on the table for 2021 quarterback Preston Stone, the Dallas (Texas) Parish Episcopal product announced on Sunday evening.
"I was very grateful and honored to be offered by Coach (Dan) Enos," Stone told BamaOnLine. "Alabama always has been and always will be a powerhouse and I’m very excited that the coaching staff took such an interest in me.
"I don’t have any plans for camps this summer yet but I’d love to make it down to Tuscaloosa in the near future."
Stone has seen his recruitment take off this spring landing offers from Penn State, LSU, Arizona State, and Washington State all in the last week. Other schools that have thrown their hats into the ring include Georgia, Michigan, and Ohio State. All together Stone boasts 35 offers.
Last season the 6-foot-2, 185-pound signal caller passed for 2,937 yards and 29 touchdowns and rushed for 216 yards and an additional four scores.
Stone is the younger brother of Virginia sophomore quarterback Lindell Stone.
Earlier this spring, 247Sports' Greg Roberts had a chance to evaluate Stone:
“The class of 2021 star had some throws that were on point for True Buzz, including one where he ducked and dodged a blitzer to make a play deep down the field. The standout from Parish (Texas) Episcopal already has an offer from Nevada. Stone is the younger brother of current Virginia quarterback Lindell Stone."
247Sports' EJ Holland had a chance to evaluate Stone at the same event:
“It’s never too early for recruiting. One of the day’s biggest standouts was 2021 Dallas Parish Episcopal quarterback Preston Stone. He showed great decision-making abilities, was accurate and made some big throws in key moments. He holds an early offer from Nevada and is definitely one to watch.”
As mentioned above, the Tide doesn't yet have a quarterback commitment in the 2020 class with several targets on the board. It does, however, likely have its class filled at the position in 2019 with commitments in from four-star, in-state signal callers Paul Tyson and Taulia Tagovailoa. Both passers are very firm in their commitments.
Alabama has only offered a handful of prospects in the 2021 class this spring. Stone, however, isn't the only signal caller in the class the staff has offered. Earlier this month, La Jolla (Calif.) The Bishop's School product Tyler Buchner reported an Alabama offer.
Other 2021 offers include wide receiver Quincy Brown, offensive tackles Donovan Jackson (who will camp in Tuscaloosa next month) and Micah Morris, offensive guard Damon Payne, inside linebacker Kendrick Blackshire, outside linebacker Chaz Chambliss, cornerback Ga'Quincy McKinstry, and athlete Shadrach Banks.
The Tide has yet to land a commitment in the cycle.
