Alabama flip targets, and the likelihood the Tide can turn them

Nolan Smith is one of Alabama's top flip targets.
quote:

Alabama finished seventh in the 2018 class recruiting rankings, but expect the Crimson Tide to be back on top in 2019. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner will answer the Recruiting Question of the Day each weekday. You can ask him your questions on  Twitter or on  Facebook. Find our previous questions and answers  here.

Which recruits are Alabama trying to flip and how likely is each flip? @hackzubbard

There are several prospects in the 2019 class that Alabama is working hard to flip. For this question, we’ll break down the likelihood of potential flips using these four labels: not likely, somewhat likely, moderately likely, very likely.

The majority of the Tide’s top targets remain uncommitted, but these are some of the guys the team is still recruiting who have already committed elsewhere.

Nolan Smith, 5-star Jack LB, IMG (Bradenton, FL) — Georgia commit

Nolan Smith has been a frequent visitor to Tuscaloosa over the past year. He’s one of the Tide’s top overall targets.

He has been committed to UGA for over a year now, but he hasn’t ended his recruitment. Alabama and Clemson are still being strongly considered.

He told SEC Country that Alabama had a “big chance” to flip him, but I don’t see that happening. He’s a recruit that wants to keep the intrigue alive.

Likelihood: Not likely

Jerrion Ealy, 4-star RB, Jackson Prep (Flowood, MS) — Ole Miss commit

Jerrion Ealy visited Tuscaloosa earlier this month, and I believe there’s a good chance he either reopens his recruitment or flips to Alabama. He’s one of Alabama’s top options at running back, and he left that visit feeling great about the Tide.

However, Ealy is also an incredible baseball player. He’s currently ranked No. 8 overall in the 2019 class by Perfect Game and thus has a good chance at being taken early in the 2019 draft. If that happens, will he turn down potential millions to play college football? He’s saying he wants to play in college, so we’ll see.

Likelihood: Very likely

Tyrion Davis, 4-star RB, Southern Lab (Baton Rouge, LA) — LSU commit

Tyrion Davis is from Baton Rouge and grew up wanting to play for LSU. Alabama has been his No. 2 school for quite some time, but it will be a challenge to flip him.

He keeps saying he’s locked in with the Tigers, but will a bad season from LSU cause him to look elsewhere? Alabama has been recruiting him hard.

Likelihood: Somewhat likely

Bill Norton, 4-star DE, Christian Bros. (Memphis, TN) — Georgia commit

Alabama is still aggressively pursuing Bill Norton, but Georgia led for several months before he committed to the Bulldogs.

I don’t think there’s much of a chance here, and I still expect the Tide to get a collection of guys from this group: Ishmael Sopsher, Faatui Tuitele, Nathan Pickering, Byron Young and Jaren Handy.

Likelihood: Not likely

Four-star DL Justin Eboigbe names top five (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Alabama has already landed one defensive lineman from the state of Georgia in the 2019 class. Can it make it two? The Tide snagged a commitment from former Georgia commit Rashad Cheney earlier this spring, and four-star defensive end Justin Eboigbe included Bama in his top-5 on Monday evening.

The Forest Park (Ga.) product narrowed his list to five from over two dozen. Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, and Tennessee also made the cut. Currently, it’s Auburn and Georgia that split the 247Sports Crystal Ball on just two predictions.

The 6-foot-4.5, 263-pounder last visited Tuscaloosa for Junior Day back in February when he picked up an offer. “It was great,” Eboigbe said of the moment Nick Saban offered him. “Just the prestige of what he was able to do at Michigan State, LSU, and Alabama, how it’s a dynasty and he’s offering me to be a part it.

"For him to say he liked my film and that my character was high enough for him to want me to be a part of his program, it meant a lot. He said I was long, fast, and physical enough that they see me fitting in. I have a chance from the defensive line to leave and go to the draft. They always have great recruiting classes of defensive linemen. I’d have a chance to come in and fight for playing time as a freshman.”

Eboigbe knows why he could see himself picking the Tide, though. “Being able to play for Coach Saban, he holds everybody accountable,” Eboigbe said. “Talking to former players, they always say he pushes you to be the best you can be not just on the field but off the field. I’d like to play for a person that can push me to break the limits for myself.”

Eboigbe is the No. 7 strong-side defensive end and the No. 107 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. There is no set timetable for a commitment from the Eboigbe.

Defensive line is certainly a priority for the Tide staff this cycle. Along with Eboigbe, several other top targets include five-star tackles Ishmael Sopsher and Faatui Tuitele; four-star ends Jaren Handy, Nathan Pickering, Byron Young; and four-star nose guards DJ Dale and Siaki Ika (among others).

The Tide’s current class sits at No. 2 in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.

Alabama poised to potentially pick up 2 more commitments in coming days

Kevin Harris will commit to Bama, LSU or Miami on Tuesday.
quote:

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. In this edition, we talk the latest with a top Alabama target set to commit on Tuesday and another name to closely monitor.

The latest on Kevin Harris and Alabama

LOGANVILLE, Ga. —  Kevin Harris has an approximately 1-inch scar on his right thumb from surgery for a torn UCL. He wore a hard cast that covered the majority of his forearm. Well, he wore that cast for around two weeks — until breaking it.

Harris, a 4-star weakside defensive end from Grayson High School, broke his hard cast after pushing a sled with maximum effort. Harris was so stir crazy that he couldn’t compete, so he went against his doctor’s orders and almost re-injured his thumb.

After that scare, Grayson coach Christian Hunnicutt said if Harris is injured now, the staff makes sure he doesn’t have any access to his helmet or pads because they know he’s going to want to practice.

Hunnicutt said he believes that even if there were no football games to be played, Harris would still practice because he just loves football that much. And it’s a big reason why despite the fact Alabama and Miami, the main contenders for Harris’ Tuesday commitment, run different base defensive schemes, Hunnicutt believes Harris will thrive in any system.

“He thinks like a coach,” Hunnicutt told SEC Country. “He’s not a typical teenager who just wants to get home and get on Snapchat. He’s just one of those guys that has a strong burning desire to improve as a football player.

“He’s a student of the game. He has a ferocious work ethic. He’s a guy who continually readjusts his goals. He is a completely process-driven player. There’s no scheme that I would limit him in to.”

Harris broke down the defensive schematic differences between Alabama and Miami and how he views himself in each.

“Miami has a 4-3 defense, so I would be a true defensive end,” Harris said. “At ‘Bama, they would move me around, so I would be more versatile there. I feel like I am a versatile player, and I feel like I could fit in any defense.”

The 6-foot-4, 217-pound prospect has already told the school he’s committing to of his decision, so there will be no surprise from that staff on Tuesday night. He told the winning school a few days ago after making Venn diagrams of the pros and cons of each of his final 3 schools. LSU is also in that final group, but the Tigers are running in a distant third place.

He are his pros of Alabama and Miami:

On Alabama: “Alabama has everything I need. I can come into their system and prove myself as a player. Some things about Alabama that are different than other schools [include that] Alabama is very business-like. Everything over there is serious, so that’s going to mature me as a person. The alumni program they have over there, the 1st & Ten club, most schools don’t have that. When you travel around and mention the name Alabama, everyone knows who you’re talking about. I can get internships after football. That’s Alabama.”

On Miami: “Miami, academically, it’s a private school. You have fewer students in the classroom. For me, that’s a big deal because what I want to major in [aerospace engineering] requires a lot of focus. If I have a question, there’s a professor right there in front of the class. You don’t have to email somebody or hunt them down. That was a big thing that my parents took note of. The campus isn’t too big, either.”

Harris took an official visit to Miami during the weekend of April 21. It was his first visit to the Hurricanes’ campus. He does have a good relationship with ‘Canes defensive line coach Jess Simpson, who was a former high school coach in Georgia.

Hunnicutt was an assistant on Simpson’s staff at Buford High School, and Harris said that does help Miami because of the already-established connection. But he also has a close relationship with Alabama defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi.

After visiting Miami, Harris followed that trip with an unofficial visit to Tuscaloosa last Monday. It was his second trip to Alabama this month, but this time he brought along an important voice in his recruitment.

“That was mainly a trip for my mother because she didn’t get a chance to see Tuscaloosa the first time,” Harris said. “They gave her the rundown of all the academic stuff and the alumni program, so I was basically just showing her around.”

Harris said his parents do not have a preference on which school they want their son to attend. He said that they are letting him make this decision on his own. Those Venn diagrams were made collectively as a family, but Harris made the final decision on his own accord.

The nation’s No. 6 weakside defensive end per the 247Sports composite told SEC Country how the winning coaching staff reacted when he relayed the good news.

“They are excited. They’ve been holding that spot for me,” Harris said. “They have really wanted me badly. It was just real. They just told me that they’ve done their research on me and they know I’m the fit for them. I just have a great relationship with the coach and I trust him to make me a better player.”

Harris’ recruitment won’t technically be over when he publicly reveals his decision on Tuesday because he is planning on taking additional official visits in the fall. But he feels like there’s nothing that’s going to end up changing his mind.

What kind of person is the winning school getting in Harris? Well, Hunnicutt asked me how long I had to talk before I had to leave for the airport. He didn’t realize I lived in Atlanta. The only reason he stopped gushing over Harris is because a college coach from Shorter University came to speak with him about other recruits.

He did have time to offer up this mighty praise of Harris, though. “He’s going to be a great ambassador,” Hunnicutt said. “I really believe that. He’s going to be a person that represents whichever institution in a first-class manner. I would say that if he wasn’t right here.

"If you just sit in the meetings and you scan the room, he’s really attentive. He processes everything. He doesn’t just sit there and listen. He tries to understand what you were saying. He’s going to be an unbelievable contributor to whichever campus has him.”

I spoke with several members around the Grayson program on Monday and the sense is Alabama’s success in the NFL draft this past weekend won Harris over, and they believe he’s going to choose the Crimson Tide. We’ll see if they end up being right.

SEC Country will have live coverage of Harris’ commitment announcement at 5:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Fans will be able to watch on our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts.

Another name to closely monitor in coming days

The leaders of Alabama’s 2019 recruiting class, 5-star tackle Pierce Quick and 4-star quarterback Paul Tyson, hinted that good news is coming soon for the Tide.

Big news coming for #ROLL1N9
1:20 PM · Apr 30, 2018

The name to closely watch in these next few days is 4-star defensive tackle  DJ Dale. I thought Dale would commit to the Tide while in town for A-Day.

All signs point toward him choosing Alabama when he does commit, and that could be coming very soon if we are to believe Quick and Tyson.

Sam Speigelman put out yet another article tonight in which he's basically trying to help recruit Sopsher to LSU.

Why LSU remains in great spot with 5-star DL Ishmael Sopsher (SEC Country - LSU)
