Alabama’s successful recruiting weekend has Tide with nation’s No. 1 class again

Taulia Tagovailoa committed to Alabama on Saturday.

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. In this edition, we discuss the latest regarding Alabama’s successful recruiting weekend.

Alabama has the No. 1 class in country

This feels weird to type, but it feels like Alabama is the cool school once again. It didn’t feel like that for the majority of the 2018 recruiting cycle. On April 20 last year, the Crimson Tide had only three commitments. A lot of the top prospects in the Class of 2018 didn’t seem to have much interest in the Tide.

After landing two Class of 2019 pledges in the past two days from 4-star quarterback  Taulia Tagovailoa and 4-star tackle  Tanner Bowles, the Crimson Tide’s current haul of 10 commits now ranks No. 1 in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

The team also received a pledge on Friday from one of the state’s top Class of 2020 prospects in 4-star wide receiver Dazalin Worsham. Alabama landed commitments from 4-star inside linebacker  Shane Lee and 4-star cornerback  Christian Williams last week, too.

Several prospects are on the verge of announcing their decisions, and that means more good news for the Tide is coming. I’m not going to spoil any player’s announcement, but they likely will commit by the end of the week.

Don’t forget that 4-star Jack linebacker target  Kevin Harris is scheduled to announce his commitment on May 1. Harris is expected in Tuscaloosa on Monday.

Five-star prospects Ishmael Sopsher (nation’s No. 1 defensive tackle) and Darnell Wright (nation’s No. 3 tackle) were in Tuscaloosa this weekend, and the Tide have improved where they stand with both. Sopsher has made numerous visits to Tuscaloosa since he has become a national recruit. Alabama and LSU are battling it out here.

Assistant director of player personnel Sam Petitto got his coaching start at Amite (La.) High School, which is where Sopsher attends, and he still has lots of connections at the school and the area. It’s one of the main reasons why Alabama was seen as the team to beat for DeVonta Smith throughout his recruitment.

I’ve heard mixed signals, though, when it comes to Sopsher. Some people I’ve spoken to say Alabama is the favorite, while others have said they don’t feel as confident. One thing is certain, the Tide have made up significant ground in the past few months. Sopsher didn’t include Alabama in his original top 12 list. Now Alabama is one of his top choices.

On the contrary, I’ve heard nothing but good things about Wright, who made his third trip to Tuscaloosa. He was treated like a major priority all weekend. Nick Saban chauffeured Wright on the ride into Bryant-Denny Stadium prior to the game. He spent ample time with offensive line coach Brent Key and 5-star tackle commit Pierce Quick, who has turned into a big recruiter himself. Tennessee is seen as the Tide’s biggest competition, but from what I’ve heard, it sounds like Alabama nailed this visit and should be considered the team to beat.

The importance of having both quarterback commits on board shouldn’t be understated, either. SEC Country was notified Saturday morning that Tagovailoa was committing to the Tide later in the day. The original plan was to announce in May, but the team really wanted to get some momentum coming out of A-Day, so the family decided to push up his decision.

Tagovailoa was going to Alabama the moment the family moved from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, to Alabaster, Ala., last year. Now he and Paul Tyson, Bear Bryant’s great-grandson, can focus on their senior seasons and help the Tide recruit. Tyson already has started. I don’t expect much public recruiting to be done on Tagovailoa’s end. He’s more reserved.

I know there were lots of Tide fans who asked me about the commitment of Bowles, which happened on Sunday. I’ll admit that I didn’t see that one coming. I was told on Saturday night to watch out for a “surprise” commitment coming. I figured it would be Wright or Sopsher, but I didn’t think it would be Bowles.

Bowles was offered by the Tide in February, and he has gone under the radar in terms of Alabama recruiting because of guys such as Wright, 5-star center Clay Webb and 4-star tackle Amari Kight. I’m told Bowles has the versatility to play any spot on the offensive line, and his status doesn’t affect Wright’s, Webb’s or Kight’s standing with Alabama. Those guys can commit whenever they want.

Finally, I spoke with several Alabama commitments on Sunday, including Quick, Williams, King Mwikuta, Rashad Cheney Jr. and Javier Morton. The excitement from those guys is contagious. They were all in Tuscaloosa on Saturday, and each of them are ready to suit up for the Tide now. A lot of them spent a good portion of their Saturday meeting the other commitments to start building relationships with each other.

This class is going to be special, guys, and a lot of that has to do with the players who are already committed and the influx of young, hungry assistant coaches who have put in serious work on the recruiting trail. It will pay off come February. It won’t come as a surprise to see the majority of the Tide’s 2019 class locked in before Alabama takes the field against Louisville for the season opener.

5-star OT Darnell Wright talks Saban, Tide visit (BamaOnLine-VIP)

5-star OT Darnell Wright 6-6/290 (WV) hudl

Wright spent quality time with Saban and Key ("he's cool"). He said he spent more time with Quick and Ekiyor and went out to eat with Wills and Leatherwood. He said he hasn't narrowed his list, may visit more schools first, has no decision time set, but may announce at the UA AA game. “They [Bama] are definitely in consideration and I’m looking to get back.”

Under Armour Atlanta Top Performers (BamaOnLine)

ROSWELL, Ga. -- A strong group of top prospects flocked to Roswell High School for the latest Under Armour All-America camp event. Many backed up their lofty rankings despite a cold and wet day in the Atlanta area.

247Sports takes a closer look at the best on either side of the football.

Alpha Dog

Clay Webb ( video - twitter, also above) was the highest-rated prospect expected to camp, expected to perform well and did just that. He was the first prospect we witness check into the event and won all but one rep we saw him take before heading home.

The 247Sports Composite five-star took home Alpha Dog honors at the Future 50 event in January and continues another standout offseason a day after visiting the Georgia Bulldogs for their spring game. Though he plays up and down the Oxford (Ala.) offensive line in high school, he worked at center on this day and continued to display some of what makes him No. 1 at that projected position in the class.

Webb plays with a great base, can move exceptionally well laterally and packs a strong, consistent punch against defensive linemen. He doesn't lose leverage battles, has enough patience to avoid lunging or over-extending and plays with enough power to bury the opponent to cap it all off.

We can't say much more positive things about Webb these days, especially when he is trim (as he currently is) and focused on the offensive interior. It's to the point it's a surprise when he loses a rep no matter the opponent or situation. He even won the offense's Big Man Challenge at the end of the event.

That skill and consistency has Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and others pursuing the junior aggressively. Despite being considered a top prospect for at least two years and familiarity on each of those SEC campuses, Webb says he will take his time with the recruiting process. The December signing period is when he currently projects a decision to be made.

Next Five Offense

5. Yet another strong offensive line performer, Paul Tchio looked like a true tackle Sunday. The class of 2020 Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton prospect has played inside for most of his young career but played patient football against solid defenders.

He was on-balance at 6-foot-5 and used his length to direct the tempo of most reps. Well over 300 pounds, he was tough to move for just about every defensive lineman who tried more of a power-based approach.

Tchio, singled out to 247Sports by a coach on hand, broke down the latest (VIP) in his recruitment earlier in the day.
Note: Tchio named Alabama his leader, after visiting UGA Saturday. He really likes Brent Key. But it appears he's a priority for UGA too.

Top Five Defense

1. Christian Williams recently made his commitment to Alabama and looked like a conventional Nick Saban defensive back on Sunday.

The Daphne (Ala.) four-star has put some weight on his 6-foot-1 frame and he can maximize it either at the line of scrimmage or when the football arrives.

Williams plays a physical game and displays great ball skills without drawing a penalty (yes, they had officials at the event).

The effort earned the junior an invitation to the Under Armour All-America Game.

3. Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove defensive end Myles Murphy did not win every rep he took but he flashed big-time ability all day long.

Already ranked as a top 40 prospect in the class of 2020, it didn't take very long to see his combination of size and explosion make things tough on blockers.

He will have time to polish up his game and get to secondary pass-rushing moves, but the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder looks and plays like the type of guy every program values on the edge.

Murphy has several SEC and Big Ten offers to his name.

Noteworthy

King Mwikuta is an outside linebacker projection, committed to Alabama, who worked out at defensive end Sunday.

He won reps with speed and showed some physical ability at the point of contact in addition to solid straight-line speed.

The combination earned him an invitation to the 2019 Under Armour All-America Game.

The Lagrange (Ga.) Troup County four-star also won the Big Man Challenge among his defensive peers.

Keith Niebuhr put out an article this morning for our Auburn friends that had a couple of tidbits that were related to us. Here they are:

quote:

Take 2: Speaking of cornerbacks, here are two notes on 4-star Alabama commit Christian Williams of Daphne (Ala.). 1. He told me Sunday he still plans to keep visiting other schools and wants to take multiple officials. Auburn has continued to communicate with him and it’s likely Tigers will get an official at this time. 2. He spoke very highly of new Auburn corner commit Cordale Flott of Saraland (Ala.). He has faced him in games and during seven on seven (They both also play receiver). According to Williams, Flott’s long arms and height are tough on a receiver. That’s some good insight from a smart, talented player. I expected Williams to stick with the Tide, but if you like someone there’s no harm in recruiting them until they shut it down.

Take 3: Chatted a bit with an SEC assistant recently and the subject of recruiting in the state of Mississippi came up. I told him that Auburn, Florida and some others hoped to land some recruits from that state in this cycle. His message to them: Good luck. Having coached both for one of the SEC schools in Mississippi and against them, he really hammered it into my head about how difficult it is to pull top recruits from that state. He figured most would land at State or Ole Miss again in 2019. In other words, the Tigers will have their work cut — in his words. We’ll see. The Tigers do think it’s possible to land a few. Going to be interesting to track, that’s for sure.

I actually think we'll sign at least 4, my guess would be Turnage, Dean, Ealy, and Byron Young. I think Pickering is a must get, but I think he winds up at MSU or the Barn.
