18 need-to-know facts from National Signing Day 2018
quote:
Recruiting, when it comes down to it, is projection and hope.
Projection because schools target and evaluate prospects with the intention recruits become the next generation of stars on campus. Hope because there’s never any guarantees when it comes to recruiting. Throw in the speculation, spectacle and nervous fandom that can come with National Signing Day, and there’s not much tangible to be gained from the event.
That’s why we’re here to present some facts.
In honor of National Signing Day 2018, these are 18 need-to-know facts based on the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Lets do this.
#1 rank class 2019.

#1 rank class 2019.

10. Alabama’s run at No. 1 is over, and the fall, at least by Alabama standards, was a long one. The Crimson Tide finished at No. 7 overall in the Team Rankings, which is their worst effort since Saban’s initial Alabama class in 2007. Don’t feel too bad for Alabama, though. The Crimson Tide still landed a pair of five-star prospects, and their per-player average (92.78) in the 19-man class would still rank fourth in the country behind just Georgia, Clemson and USC.

18. There are recruits with famous parents every year, but the 2018 class is particularly stacked in that area. Here are a few notable prospects with notable dads: Five-star Alabama CB Patrick Surtain Jr. (former NFL All-Pro Patrick Surtain), five-star Ohio State DT Taron Vincent (former NFL DB Troy Vincent), four-star Florida State CB Asante Samuel Jr. (former All-Pro corner Asante Samuel), four-star South Carolina CB Jaycee Horn (former Pro Bowler Joe Horn), four-star Miami CB Al Blades Jr. (former 49ers DB Al Blades), four-star Texas A&M offensive guard Luke Matthews (NFL Hall of Fame member Bruce Matthews), three-star Boston College running back Javian Dayne (former Wisconsin star Ron Dayne), three-star Boston College offensive tackle Tyler Vrabel (Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel), three-star Clemson linebacker Jake Venables (Clemson DC Brent Venables), three-star Oklahoma wide receiver Drake Stoops (former Oklahoma HC Bob Stoops), four-star USC corner Olaijah Griffin (rapper Warren G) and Boston College kicker John Tessitore (son of ESPN broadcaster Joe Tessitore).

National Signing Day Superlatives for the class of 2018

Gotten your National Signing Day fix yet? We didn’t think so. 247Sports is handing out awards for each Power 5 conference as well as the Group of 5, but we didn’t want to ignore going over things from a national scope. Read on for those superlatives.

Biggest Signing Day Win
Alabama has an immediate need in the secondary and the Crimson Tide got a boost in the form of top-ranked cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr., who maintained LSU as his leader for much of the process. But the five-star from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage couldn’t ignore the five tational titles the Crimson Tide have brought home under Nick Saban and he’ll head to Tuscaloosa ready to help bring home No. 6.

Roller Coaster Signing Day
Stay with Alabama, who saw things take off right away with Surtain and end on a similar high in landing the nation’s top slot receiver Jaylen Waddle. Sprinkled in between Nick Saban and his staff landed four-star cornerback Eddie Smith and linebacker Jaylen Moody but also missed on several top targets down the stretch — Malik Langham, Justyn Ross, Jacob Copeland — and lost commitments from defensive linemen Bobby Brown and Vernon Jackson. Alabama’s got the No. 7 class, its lowest recruiting ranking since 2007.

Signing Day Superlatives for the SEC
quote:
Yet again, the SEC can boast the No. 1 recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings. However, for the first time since 2010, that team isn't Alabama. Instead it's Georgia, with 323.31 points, that claims the top spot.
Let's hand out some National Signing Day awards for the SEC.

Best Recruiting Win
Throughout much of the recruiting cycle five-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. admitted LSU held the edge for his pledge. The Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage standout had family near Baton Rouge and a longstanding relationship with Tigers defensive backs coach Corey Raymond. However, rival Alabama was persistent and continued to hang within striking distance. Nick Saban knocked Surtain’s official visit to Tuscaloosa out of the park, and what looks to be becoming an annual tradition, the Tide stole a recruit from the Tigers. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Surtain should step into Alabama’s secondary and earn immediate playing time.
