That's a little Trey Depriest-like. Makes me worry he stays in the middle and thumps, but can't cover or go lateral if needed. That said, I've seen exactly zero seconds of the kids film and am basing my opinion entirely off his height/weight ratio and should prolly give the kid the benefit of the doubt.

I watched Shane Lee's highlights again, since it's been a while. It's hard to judge how well he can shed good blockers. He was unblocked on a lot of the plays. He does appear to read and react quickly, avoid blockers & trash, and take good pursuit angles. He didn't wait on the RBs to come to him; i.e., he did a good job of minimizing yardage gained. Not enough there to judge his pass coverage and open-field play.

I think King Mwikuta, Nakobe Dean, Christian Harris, Kevin Harris and Kayvon Thibodeaux may be higher on Bama's LB board. Same for Nolan Smith, but I think he's just playing games and sticks with his UGA commitment. Marcel Brooks, Vonta Bentley, Mohamoud Diabate and Lakia Henry might be ahead of Lee too. I really don't know -- I'm just trying to read the tea leaves. But, I know Bama does like guys who project well at multiple LB positions.

Bama is well positioned to have an epic LB haul in the 2019 cycle and may want to take 5-7 LBs. It'll be interesting to see who Bama wants most and who really wants to join this 2019 LB class.

Williams goes in-depth on Alabama commitment (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Alabama landed its 7th commitment of the 2019 class on Monday in four-star cornerback Christian Williams. Growing up a Crimson Tide fan, the writing was on the wall for an eventual commitment from the state of Alabama’s top defensive player from Daphne.

“Honestly, I’ve been talking to my parents and the coaches about it,” Williams said of his decision to commit on Monday. “I wanted to commit a little earlier, but my parents wanted me to visit places and see if it was the right choice. Honestly, Alabama is where I wanted to go since I was a little kid. I just felt like it was the right time, I guess. Also, to secure myself a spot.”

Williams’ primary recruiter is running backs coach Joe Pannunzio. He’s also very close with defensive backs coach Karl Scott and defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi. “They were really excited about it and everything,” Williams said of when he told the staff he wanted to commit. “I’m going to talk to them more about it when I get up there for A-Day.”

The four-star corner talked about how it feels to have a commitment out of the way. “Now I feel like I have a bigger target on my back,” Williams said. “I can’t disappoint. I’ve got to be on my grind. Honestly, it just motivates me more.”

Aside from growing up a fan of the Tide, Alabama has a lot to offer that caught Williams’ eye. “I love how they love to win and winning is a standard there,” he said. “Even in practice you’re going against the best players in the country every day. There’s no way you shouldn’t be the best player you can possibly be. I like the coaches and everything. Everything about it is great to me.”

The recruiting process will continue on for Williams. “I’m still going to take more visits,” he said. “I still want to see everything and all that.” Williams says he may do some recruiting at A-Day this weekend. He’s already started building a relationship with fellow Tide commits Paul Tyson and Pierce Quick.

At 6-foot-1, 177 pounds, Williams is rated the No. 10 cornerback and the No. 101 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings.

Three-Point Stance: Commits galore; reviewing spring games

quote:

What a week. Commitments are heating up and it’s getting harder already to name the top commits of each week. Here’s my best crack at it.

1. WR Theo Wease, Oklahoma – A big, physical and gifted receiver who can simply dominate at the next level.

2. WR Arjei Henderson, Oklahoma – See Theo Wease description.

3. WR Maurice Goolsby, Florida State – See Wease and Henderson. Goolsby is just a tick behind as a pure receiver.

4. QB Drew Pyne, Notre Dame (2020) – The quarterback position always pushes players to the top of this list and Pyne is one of the best in the 2020 class.

5. OL Dontae Lucas, Florida State – A road grader I really like, he’s going to help the toughness at FSU up front.

6. WR Frank Ladson, Clemson – Another elite receiver goes off the board. Ladson is a super talent as well.

7. Christian Williams, Alabama — Lockdown cornerback with great instincts and length could play very early.

8. QB Taisun Phommachanh, Clemson – Talented quarterback brings a few different things to the table to Clemson’s crowded quarterback group.

9. QB Max Duggan, TCU – A good fit for the Horned Frogs and a talented passer, this is a huge get for Gary Patterson and company.

10. ATH Ronnie Hickman, Ohio State – Add another great athlete to the Buckeyes roster, this kid can play many places.

11. LB Jaleel McRae, Florida State – Another elite defender chooses FSU.

12. DB Jamal Morris, Oklahoma – A big-time defender could be more important than the offensive firepower.

13. OL Bryan Hudson, Virginia Tech – A big, nasty offensive lineman who has a high ceiling is a massive get for the Hokies.

14. CB Nyquee Hawkins, Virginia Tech – A great fit for a defense that plays with a chip on its shoulder.

15. DB Te’Cory Couch, Michigan – More help from the Southeast, the key to winning it all.

16. RB Cesare Mellusi, Clemson – Another dynamic athlete for the Clemson offense, Mellusi brings versatility and speed.

17. DE Braxten Croteau, Cal – Tall, lanky rush end with a great motor and excellent technique for his age.

Simmons Awards: Atlanta's Superman, Beast, Robber and more

quote:

AUSTELL, Ga. — The Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas made a stop in the Atlanta area Sunday and some of the prospects looked like superheroes, one was just taking the ball away and another was reaching into the sky for the ball.

Here are the Simmons Awards by Southeast Recruiting Analyst Chad Simmons.

SUPERMAN

Arik Gilbert looks as if he can run through a brick wall, fly through the sky and do anything he wants on a football field. The 2020 five-star athlete worked out at tight end and it was tough for anyone to slow him down. It is easy to see why schools like Georgia, Miami, Tennessee and USC among many others are after this young man.

UNKNOWN NO MORE

Jamal Camp
is a name to know. He came out to the combine Saturday, then the camp Sunday and he is a name you are going to hear a lot more. He is an athletic defensive lineman who ranked among the best Sunday. He has good size, he is quick and he could see his recruitment take off in the coming weeks. Georgia will have him in Athens this week.

THE BEAST

Jayson Jones
crossed over into Georgia from his home in Calera, Ala., Sunday through the rain and he impressed. At 6-foot-6 and 340 pounds, he looked like a mountain of a young man. He is strong – very strong – and he was tough to deal with in the trenches. There are many names he could have been called Sunday based on his appearance. We went with ‘The Beast’ over Incredible Hulk. He is likely to commit to Alabama or Georgia on July 4, but he is planning to visit other schools between now and then.

QUIET ASSASSIN

Amari Kight
was one of the more impressive offensive linemen that we have seen on the camp circuit this year. He just goes about his business. He is not a trash talker, he is not all about the celebrations when he wins (which is most of the time), he does not like to draw attention to himself and despite being a monster at 6-6, 300 pounds, you can barely hear him when he does interviews. He is a low-key young man with major talent and a very high ceiling. Alabama, Auburn and Georgia are three schools he’s considering.

THE DOMINATOR

If you have watched Clay Webb in this setting before, then you know what to expect and this title doesn’t surprise you. It is very similar to Kardell Thomas, an LSU commit who dominated in Mobile, but Webb is even better. When Webb lined up at center, his true position, he was almost unmovable. Jayson Jones got the better of him one time, but other than that, Webb hardly moved out of his spot. He is so strong, he plays with great leverage and he anchors as good as anyone. He will be tough to pull out of Alabama, but Clemson, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee are trying.

This could come down to a Saban vs. Smart battle

quote:

AUSTELL, Ga. — Jayson Jones is a large young man. He checked in at the Rivals 3-stripe came presented by adidas at 6-feet, 6-inches tall and he weighed 340 pounds.

He carries that weight very well. He is very strong and he was one of the top performers on the defensive line Sunday.

The 2020 prospect out of Calera (Ala.) is used to celebrating July 4 every year with family and friends, but this year, it will be a little different. He will set off his own fireworks with some recruiting news.

"I will be committing to a school July 4 and I am looking forward to that," said Jones. "I do not see that changing either. I am pretty set on that date and I will be committing to someone that day. I will be ready."

At the mid way point in April, two SEC schools are battling at the top and the one neighboring his home state has the lead.

"Georgia has the slight edge over Alabama right now and I have a great relationship with coach [Tray] Scott. I was there about a month ago for a Junior Day and I love the environment.

"I really like the coaches at Georgia, but there is more to it than that. I like how they treat me and others that I have seen there. The environment is great and they make me feel comfortable. They made me feel special and that went a long way."

Jones will be back in Tuscaloosa this weekend for the Alabama spring game. The race it tight between the schools that played for the National Championship in January.

"Georgia and Alabama are very similar. Like Georgia, I can tell Alabama really does want me. What I like most about Alabama is the connection that I have with the team already. I love the new defensive line coach (Craig Kuligowski). He is a very intelligent guy. Coach Saban is a great person to talk too as well."

Clemson, LSU, Mississippi State and South Carolina were other schools Jones mentioned as contenders for his July commitment. He does plan to take quite a few visits in the coming months leading up to his decision.

He was asked if today was July 3, which school would commit to tomorrow? Jones said, "I wouldn't be able to. I still need some more time and to take more visits. I like Georgia and Alabama a lot, but each school has a different feeling and I have to get out and see schools for the first time and again.

"I will be ready to commit in July, but I am not ready now."

That’s not good. He’s going to be a good one. The state of Alabama just doesn’t churn out elite DTs. Can’t miss on him.

Long time between now and when the 2020 class inks. I'm not overly concerned.

Kid can move and would be a great get for us. Trey Depriest would be good for us if he came in now. Doubt they would put a lot of weight on him. Our LBs aren't as big anymore and I remember him having a lil gut.

Something about the structure at Bama must interest those kids from that school. Majority of those kids were homeless and probably need it.

Lee told BOL he has known Locksley for a long time and that he is friends with his parents.

Lee is also close to Terrell Lewis.
