Simmons' Takeaways: Atlanta 3 Stripe Camp loaded up front (segments)
Clay Webb

AUSTELL, Ga. — The Atlanta stop of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas is in the books and, despite some less-than-ideal weather, the event was again as deep and talented as any in the country. The competition was stiff at every position as highly regarded prospects clashed with rising stars. Below, Rivals.com Southeast analyst Chad Simmons shares the storylines that stood out to him from Sunday.

WEBB IS IN ANOTHER WORLD
Clay Webb is just different. In many ways. The five-star offensive lineman out of Oxford, Ala. was expected to dominate, which he did, but he may just be on another level. Maybe even in another world.
Not only did he do what most thought he would — won offensive line MVP and earned invite to the Rivals 100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas, but he also revealed that he loves to build Legos in his spare time. He is not on Twitter, he does not report offers and he never reveals his visit plans. In short, he is just different.
Webb loves to read history and science fiction books when he isn't on the football field, winning wrestling matches or eating Bojangles. Webb is rare, both on and off the field. There are simply not many like him as a recruit.
He was extremely impressive Sunday. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee are some of the schools fighting for him and he plans to commit and sign during the Early Signing Period in December.

MURPHY IS SPECIAL
As soon as Myles Murphy walked in Sunday morning, he turned a lot of heads and quickly created a buzz. He measured in a hair under 6-foot-5 and he weighed 257 pounds, but had a very studious look thanks to his glasses and quiet, reserved demeanor.
Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Michigan and South Carolina are some of the schools that have offered, but it’s shocking that he does not more offers at this point. After just a couple of reps in the rain Sunday, it was easy to see that he is a special prospect. He was winning with ease at times. Murphy did not talk trash or celebrate each victory. Instead, he just ran to the back of line and got ready to compete again.
Rivals.com has Murphy as an early four-star (2020) defensive end, but the freak out of Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove performed today like he needed that fifth-star on his profile.

SCARY TRIO
All that play or follow high school football in Georgia know about the Marietta Blue Devils. They have talent up and down their roster, and a number of the program's players were in attendance Sunday. I could talk about more than half a dozen, but I will focus on three.
Four-star 2020 quarterback Harrison Bailey, who earned an invite to the Rivals 100 Five-Star Challenge, showed once again why he has offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee and many others. Bailey was strong through the rain, especially with the deep ball and it is scary to think who he will get to throw to this fall.
Arik Gilbert, one of the few early 2020 five-stars, worked at tight end on Sunday and made it look easy at times. He was running past linebackers and he showed strong hands. He actually came out and said Tennessee may be his top school at this time with Georgia, Miami, USC and others still right there too.
Class of 2019 wide receiver Ramel Keyton also impressed Sunday. He is a long, fluid playmaker that can adjust to the ball as well as anyone. Keyton is high on Auburn and Tennessee.
There are plenty of other talented offensive weapons at Marietta, and some were on display Sunday, but this trio should scare a lot of opposing defenses this fall.

STRONG DEFENSIVE LINE
As good as the offensive line group was Sunday with guys like Clay Webb, Keiondre Jones and Amari Kight leading the way, the defensive line group was even more impressive thanks to its mix of size and speed.
On the outside, Myles Murphy (2020) and Derrick McLendon won with inside and outside moves. Each impressed in every way. McLendon’s name has been picking up some steam lately and he was winning a lot more than losing Sunday. Murphy is a name you will read a lot more about in the coming months. Some of the other ends who had some success were Andy Boykin (Auburn commit), Zykeivous Walker, B.J. Ojulari, Brent Randolph and Damarjhe Lewis.
On the inside, Jayson Jones led the way. He checked in at 6-foot-6, 340 pounds and the mountain out of Calera (Ala.) was the only defensive lineman to defeat Webb. Jones is all about power. There are some that talk about offensive line when his name comes up, but he is focused on being the top defensive lineman he can be. He is set to commit July 4 and he has Alabama and Georgia on top.
Alabama commit Rashad Cheney and sleeper Antwann Fann also flashed on the inside. Cheney can play inside and outside, but Fann is a pure interior guy on the next level.

5-star athlete Quavaris Crouch talks Alabama, position preference for college — and beyond

Quavaris Crouch‘s thoughts on Alabama
Quavaris Crouch is one of the most gifted players in the 2019 recruiting cycle — and one of Alabama’s top overall targets in the class. He rushed for 3,283 yards and 33 touchdowns last season as a full-time running back for Harding University High School (Charlotte, N.C.) and had 48 tackles and 14 sacks on defense as a part-time linebacker.
Every school recruiting Crouch is telling him that he has the opportunity to play both ways in college. Crouch knows that is mainly just a recruiting pitch that has little merit. There are very few players for elite programs who play on both offense and defense.
But as of now, Crouch, the nation’s No. 2 athlete in the 247Sports composite rankings, is leaning toward playing linebacker in college. The 5-star prospect believes he would excel as an outside linebacker because of his speed as a pass rusher and athleticism in coverage.
But the main reason why he’s leaning toward linebacker? Longevity. Running backs have the shortest average careers in the NFL, spanning just 2.57 years.
“I just want to make enough money to take care of my family,” Crouch told SEC Country’s Jeff Sentell at The Opening Charlotte regional on Sunday. “Running back — you can do that — but as a linebacker, you don’t get hit a lot and you play longer. I feel like it would put me in position to play longer and take care of my family.”
The 6-foot-2, 224-pound prospect wouldn’t name the schools that check off the most of his priorities, but he did say that having the ability to play both ways — should he change his mind — is important to him.

Why Alabama has Quavaris Crouch’s attention
Alabama is one of those schools recruiting him both ways. Crouch plans on naming his top schools this summer, and it sounds like Alabama will make the short list.
“I feel like Alabama is a great place,” Crouch said. “It’s Alabama. You’re going to get what you hear. It’s not a lot of lovey-dovey stuff. You’re going to work hard each and every day to get better. That’s the type of stuff I like. I don’t expect anyone to take it easy on me. I want to get better and compete. If you’re going to go to Alabama, you have to be ready to compete. I feel like Alabama is a good school.”
Crouch also mentioned Clemson, Florida State, Michigan and South Carolina as schools that were coming after him hard. Crouch doesn’t have any visits set right now, as he just came off a trip to Florida State this weekend for the Seminoles’ spring game.
The last time Crouch was in Tuscaloosa was last summer. That visit has stuck with him, specifically his conversation with Nick Saban.
“I didn’t even ask for a picture with him because it was so serious in the room,” Crouch said. “He knows everything about you. He knows about every interest I have. He does his homework, for sure. He told me all about the expectations and how you’re not going to be given anything. You have to work hard for everything. At the end of the day, you’re going to have a chance to play in the National Football League. He keeps it real.”
When Crouch was growing up, he said he didn’t think he’d get an Alabama offer until he was a senior in high school. He believed that Alabama was the best school, and he felt like that would be the last major offer he’d get. Well, it came near the end of his sophomore year.
It sounds like the main thing Crouch likes about Alabama is the hard work the team puts into everything it does because that’s how he operates.
“I’m not going to lie, the challenges,” Crouch said when asked what he specifically likes about the program. “It’s going to be challenging if I went there. You’re going to be challenged every day. I work hard. But you’re going to really work down there. And then you go up there and check them out, and the [social media] videos they put out, they kind of scare you a little bit. Do I really want to handle all of that? But I like hard work.”
Crouch claims no favorite schools at this time. There’s no set timeline for when he’ll make his commitment, either. He is an early enrollee, so he’ll be on the campus of his choice in January.

Quavaris Crouch’s professional mindset — on and off the field
Alabama’s championships won’t play a major factor in Crouch’s decision. He’s mainly looking for a school with good academics, specifically a good business school, and the best place for him to make it to the NFL.
“At the end of the day, how many times did Tom Brady win in college?” Crouch asked. “No one in the league is going to ask you how many times you won in college. Nobody cares. You want to go somewhere where they can get you to the league.”
Alabama could definitely be that school. The Crimson Tide have the most top-1o draft picks in the last 10 years with nine, followed by LSU with seven. There have been 65 Tide players drafted since 2009.
There’s not much else Crouch needs to see out of the Tide.
“Alabama is Alabama. They represent themselves well,” Crouch said. “It’s really just a mind thing. You have to be ready to work. There’s really nothing they have to do. I study all of them. I study Alabama and I know how they do things there. It’s just going to come down to what I want to do.”
