Cheney said there wasn’t a No. 2 school for him. He was just so sure that Alabama was the school for him that he didn’t worry about other coaches and their recruiting pitches. “I feel confident in my decision,” Cheney said. “Others may think it’s a dumb decision to go to Alabama because of all the good players they have, but I have worked so hard for this. I know this is the right decision.”
This isn’t Cheney’s first commitment to a school. The nation’s No. 17 defensive tackle committed to Georgia in February of last year before reopening his recruitment in January. That wasn’t an easy decision for Cheney because he grew up wanting to play for the Bulldogs.
But UGA didn’t give him much of a choice other than to reopen his recruitment. Since doing so, the Georgia staff hasn’t been in touch with him. It was clear that he wasn’t wanted by the Bulldogs. “I have like 20 other places I could go to,” Cheney said. “I know it’s a business. Just because one school isn’t hitting you up doesn’t mean you should get down on yourself, even if it was the school you were committed to.”
There’s a current Georgia commit that Cheney is now hoping de-commits from the Bulldogs to join him in Tuscaloosa, and that’s the nation’s No. 1 wide receiver Jadon Haselwood. Cheney and Haselwood are teammates at Cedar Grove. The new Alabama commit told Haselwood of his decision on Wednesday and has already tried to start recruiting him. He doesn’t think Haselwood is going to flip because he believes he’s strongly committed to UGA.
And don’t expect Cheney to flip from Alabama to any other school. “Like coach said, when I commit, it’s a wrap,” Cheney said. “I’m not going anywhere else. I’m done. My recruitment is over with.” Cheney becomes Alabama’s fifth commitment in the 2019 class.

I love Rashad Cheney's film. Very disruptive player.
I don't care if he rated low. Kid can play, big pick up in my opinion.

Rashad Cheney really isn't ranked that low. He's ranked #17 DT and #265 overall player. And the rankings will be shuffled a few times before NSD. He's gonna be a good one for us.

What Alabama is getting in new DL commit Rashad Cheney (BamaOnLine)

What Rashad Cheney brings to the table
Alabama has a major need along the defensive line in its 2019 class, and added a big piece to the puzzle on Thursday afternoon in Rashad Cheney. The four-star defensive tackle becomes the first defensive lineman to join the fold, and the Tide is getting a good one according to Cheney’s head coach at Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove, Jermaine Smith.
“Great kid,” Smith told BamaOnLine. “He’s hard-working. He’s probably gained fifteen pounds of muscle in the last year. He’s fast off the ball and is aggressive with his hands. The sky’s the limit. He’s getting better and better every day, every practice. He loves football.
"He’s one of those kid’s that’s easy to coach because he loves to compete. He’s one of those guys you kind of have to tell to take some reps off. He’ll try to go on the scout team and take some reps there. He does a good job in the classroom. He’s respectful. He’s one of those guys that’s hard to find.”
Cheney contributes to Cedar Grove in a number of ways, a luxury of having a 275-pound defensive lineman that looks and can move like a 250-pounder. “He had two touchdowns at fullback last year,” Cheney said. “I can use him at offensive tackle if I needed him to. He could be one of the top tackles if I really needed him to, or top guards. On goal line I put him in there and let him knock the hell out of somebody.”

Where does Alabama turn now on the defensive line?
Things are just getting started along the defensive line for the Crimson Tide in 2019. Seeing as the position group is a priority, expect many more to join the class as the cycle goes on.
Alabama has honed in on a number of defensive ends in its 3-4 scheme. Some prospects to know that we’ve discussed on BOL include: Faatui Tuitele, Nathan Pickering, Byron Young, Travon Walker, Jaren Handy, Antonio Alfano, Savion Jackson, Justin Eboigbe, Jaquaze Sorrells, among others. So, as you can see, plenty of names we will continue to track this spring and summer.

Alabama’s class ranking
With the the commitment, Alabama now ranks No. 9 in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings with five commitments. The Tide has the second highest per commit (95.08) rankings of any team ahead of it in the standings. This time last year the Tide had commitments from Jordan Davis, Xavier Williams, Akial Byers, and Dameon Pierce. The previous two signed with Alabama in December.

Alabama lands commitment from Bear Bryant’s great-grandson, QB Paul Tyson
Paul Tyson is Alabama's 6th 2019 commitment.

Alabama has landed its second commitment of the day and one who certainly will resonate with the fan base as Paul Tyson, a 4-star quarterback from Hewitt-Trussville High School (Trussville, Ala.), has chosen to play for the Crimson Tide.
Tyson is the great-grandson of legendary coach Bear Bryant. He is the No. 7-ranked pro-style quarterback in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite.
“It really is an honor just knowing that I can be a part of that because of who my great-grandfather is,” Tyson said in an interview with SEC Country. “Walking down the halls where the coaches’ offices are means a lot to me because my great-grandfather coached there. I love that because it pushes me, even more, to work harder. I want my name to be as big and next to my great-grandfather’s somewhere. I want to be like him one day.”

Tyson is the Tide’s sixth commitment in the 2019 class. And what a big commitment this one is for Alabama. The Crimson Tide didn’t sign a quarterback in the 2018 class, and now they have one who no doubt will sign with the team when it comes time to make his decision official.
Tyson is also teammates with 5-star tackle Pierce Quick, who is locked in with Alabama. Both Tyson and Quick will now turn their recruiting efforts toward getting 5-star center Clay Webb on board.

New Alabama QB commit Tyson can be a fan again (BamaOnLine)
quote:
The great grandson of Bear Bryant, Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) Top247 quarterback Paul Tyson has attended countless Alabama games including five played in the National Championship.
His commitment to the Crimson Tide on Thursday comes as a surprise to nobody, but the 6-foot-4, 217-pound, strong-armed passer swears it wasn’t that hard to stop being a fan when his recruitment took off in trying to find the best place for him. In fact he added it was a pretty tough decision.
It would have been a hell of a wardrobe change had Tyson chose somewhere else. “He genuinely did look around,” his coach Josh Floyd said. “That was really cool but it was still tough on him,” his father Marc Tyson said.
In the end, the four-star Tyson chooses the program he dreamed of playing for over an offer list that included Clemson, Michigan, Notre Dame, LSU, Oregon, Tennessee and USC among others. Tyson said he got the feeling on his visit to Tuscaloosa three weeks ago but even then wanted to let that marinate before telling Nick Saban, lead recruiter Brent Key, Dan Enos and company in person Thursday afternoon.

“I really tried to go through this with an open mind and tried to find the best home for me and Alabama felt like home and it always has been," Tyson said. "It’s been a great ride and recruiting process, but Alabama is a great fit. The coaching staff, especially with the new coaches, it works out to be my type of offense, it’s close to home, with my great grandfather and everything it works out almost perfectly. It’s meant to be.”
The 247Sports Composite ranks Tyson as the nation’s No. 7 pro-style passer. In his first year as the starter last fall, he threw for 3,392 yards and 36 touchdowns to just four interceptions. He obviously protects the football and has shown he can make all the throws on the field. His commitment is big for a program that didn't sign a signal-caller in the 2017 class.
“He’s a special kid,” Floyd said. “Great leader on and off the field. That’s the first thing you love about him. High-character kid you want to have at the quarterback position.”
Alabama moves to No. 7 in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings with Tyson in the fold. He is the second commit of the day joining fellow four-star Rashad Cheney who is among the quickest defensive tackles in the country. All six of the Crimson Tide’s commits rank four-stars or better giving this group the second-highest ranking per commit thus far early in the 2019 cycle.
Tyson is excited to be an Alabama fan again. “I went in there and told Coach Saban I was ready to commit and thanked him for the opportunity,” Tyson said. “He was fired up and all the coaching staff was fired up. It was a great day and everybody was excited. They were asking me to commit for a good time and I figured now was about time.”

Latest on Tide’s pursuit of an elite running back

Who do you predict Alabama signs at running back? - @KTribe82

This has been a popular question. Alabama will likely sign two running backs in the 2019 class, and there are several top options for the Crimson Tide.
There are two 5-star running backs associated with the Tide, Trey Sanders and Quavaris Crouch. Sanders was committed to Alabama for more than a year before reopening his recruitment in January. It’s unlikely Sanders rejoins the Tide at this point. I think his older brother, Umstead, getting a preferred walk-on spot at Florida gives the Gators an edge.
With Crouch, there was some Bama buzz a few months ago but Clemson has that momentum now. Alabama needs to get Crouch back on campus, which I’m sure will happen this spring.
Outside of those guys, there isn’t one running back who seems to be leaning toward Bama. Ole Miss running back commit Jerrion Ealy will visit Tuscaloosa on Saturday. I think he’s one to watch. LSU running back commit Tyrion Davis is also strongly considering Alabama. He’s going to be tough to flip, though, as he’s from Baton Rouge and grew up wanting to play for the Tigers.
Alabama is also hosting 4-star running back Keilan Robinson this weekend. He’s one of the team’s top targets. Ronald Thompkins, a 4-star prospect from Grayson High School (Loganville, Ga.), is also a name to know.
So, I think it’s too early to give any prediction on running back. There are lots of names out there but not one that has emerged from the pack as being a possible addition.

Ouch. I'm a little surprised at this. They'll play behind Najee for only a year. I'd think a lot more would be interested.

Don't sleep on Robinson. He's VERY good. We'll still be pretty deep in 2019 -- Najee, Robinson, Jacobs, Bolden and Ford. So, I don't agree with Kirschner. I think Bama only takes 1 RB and 1-2 WRs in this cycle -- because Bama is in good shape to land some great DLs & LBs and needs them much more. I think Bama will load up on 6 DLs and 6 LBs in this cycle and then take 2 stud RBs in the 2020 class. We'll see.

Paul Tyson‘s commitment doesn’t affect Taulia Tagovailoa
Alabama landed one of the centerpieces of its 2019 recruiting class on Thursday when 4-star quarterback Paul Tyson, who’s the great-grandson of Bear Bryant, committed to the Crimson Tide.
The team would like to add two quarterbacks this cycle, and now attention turns toward Taulia Tagovailoa, a 4-star quarterback from Thompson High School (Alabaster, Ala.). Tagovailoa is the younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa.
Lots of questions that SEC Country received shortly after Tyson’s commitment focus on how that affects Tagovailoa. In short, it doesn’t.
“It really means nothing. Taulia is just like Tua,” Galu Tagovailoa, Taulia’s father, told SEC Country. “He’s willing to compete whether it’s at Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina or Nebraska. It doesn’t affect him and his decision with any of the schools. We want to congratulate Paul and his family. They are great people.”
The decision to take Tyson wasn’t unexpected to the Tagovailoas. Alabama’s staff had told them that the team was going to take two quarterbacks in the 2019 class. And it’s not something the team can avoid doing.
Alabama didn’t sign a quarterback in the 2018 class and lost out on adding East Carolina grad transfer Gardner Minshew, who decided to choose Washington State over the Tide.

“They told me that they were going to take two quarterbacks in this class and Paul was likely going to be one of them, so we knew this was going to happen,” Galu Tagovailoa said.
SEC Country caught up with Taulia a few weeks ago at the Atlanta Opening regional camp, and it was clear to him that following in Tua’s footsteps and competing to earn playing time was something he was fine with.
“That’s kind of natural,” Taulia Tagovailoa said. “I don’t really compete with anyone else other than Tua when it comes to football and school. Even when we are at home just playing games, I want to win. God blessed me with an amazing brother who I can compete with every day in every aspect of life.”
After Tua enrolled at Alabama in January 2017, the Tagovailoa family relocated from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, to Alabaster, Ala., to be closer to their oldest son. Family is of supreme importance to the Tagovailoas, and Taulia admitted it will be difficult for him to choose a school that isn’t Alabama.
“It would be better for my family if I went there,” Taulia Tagovailoa said. “They wouldn’t have to travel to other places. We live only an hour away. A lot of things could benefit me if I went there. I think I would fit in [very] well. I would fit right in with my brother.”
Some quarterbacks get scared off when they aren’t the only quarterback in the class, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case with Taulia. I still think there’s an excellent chance he winds up choosing the Tide.

Galu Tagovailoa sheds insight on Faatui Tuitele
There’s a lot of football talent in the Tagovailoa family tree outside of Tua and Taulia Tagovailoa. Their cousin is quite gifted, too. He is 5-star defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele out of St. Louis School (Honolulu). Not only are the Tagovailoas and Tuitele related but Tua and Faatui are former teammates.
Tuitele and his family arrived in Tuscaloosa on Monday and had dinner with his relatives Tuesday night. Diane Tagovailoa, Tua’s and Taulia’s mother, and Tuitele’s grandfather are first cousins.
“We shared things they should expect if they chose Alabama,” Galu Tagovailoa said. “It was good to see our family here in God’s country. It’s now a decision they have to make to see what’s best for them as a family.”
The nation’s No. 2 defensive tackle told SEC Country that seeing Tua have the success he did as a freshman certainly helps Alabama’s chances with him because the quarterback paved the way for an elite Hawaiian recruit to choose a school not located on the West Coast.
That was also something that was conveyed to Tuitele’s family from the Tagovailoas. “They see that there is so much potential out here and a lot that can benefit their son,” Galu Tagovailoa said.
“I don’t think their son coming out here is an issue. The kid is all about competition. That’s why he’s one of the best linemen in the country. Competition isn’t going to stop him from getting to where he wants to get to. So, 5,000 miles isn’t going to stop him if Alabama is the school he wants to go to.”

Galu Tagovailoa believes Tuitele’s family doesn’t have any reservations about sending their kids across the country for college. It also helps that the Tagovailoas are only an hour from the school.
The transition from Hawaii to Alabama wouldn’t be as drastic as it was for Tua, who didn’t have any family already at the school like Tuitele would have.
“We told the parents that we always have a home for them if they want to come up for the weekend and watch their son play,” Galu Tagovailoa said. “There’s nothing better than going to a school that you already have family at.”
So, how would he classify the Tide’s chances with one of the team’s top defensive line targets? “Alabama has a really, really good chance with him,” Galu Tagovailoa said.

Like I have been saying. I am waiting for the crystal balls to roll in and for Tuitele's commitment.
Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about the explosiveness and physicality of a very underrated Rashad Cheney... but Tuitele is a must.
I just have to be patient. He coming.

Tyson’s film reminds me of Jake Coker. Definitely a change of pace from Hurts/Tua.
His arm isn’t great but is definitely serviceable. His feet are a little heavy, but he throws well on the run. His film doesn’t show much in way of timing throws, but he seems able to get the ball through defenders.
He’s definitely not a year 1 starter, but he’s a steady hand who Saban will probably turn into the kind of game manager he can win with.
I would put his HS film somewhere between Coker’s and McCarron’s. AJ’s looked more dynamic - to me - at the same stage.
