I'm just waiting for Tuitele.

For me it's a matter of "when" not "if".

I hope he commits today, cancels the Friday Ohio State visit and hangs around at Bama instead.

Projecting Alabama’s defensive line haul in the 2019 class

Ishmael Sopsher is the #1 DT in the 2019 class.

Alabama finished seventh in the 2018 class recruiting rankings, but expect the Crimson Tide to be back on top in 2019. Who do you think Alabama signs on the defense line? - @brritt0

It’s obviously too early to make a strong prediction on which players Alabama will sign in December and February, but these are the defensive linemen I am expecting the Crimson Tide to sign:

5-star defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher
5-star defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele
4-star defensive tackle Rashad Cheney
4-star defensive end Byron Young
4-star defensive end Jaren Handy

Sopsher has been a major target for Alabama for more than a year. He’s a former high school teammate of current Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith. Sopsher is a current teammate of 4-star wide receiver target Devonta Lee. I can see both Sopsher and Lee choosing the Tide. LSU is the biggest competition for both. I don’t think the Tigers are going to be very good this season, so that certainly can help Alabama with both prospects.

Tuitele currently is on his first visit to Tuscaloosa. We’ve written about Tuitele, who was a high school teammate of Tua Tagovailoa, a lot over the last few months. But he’s definitely willing to choose a school that’s far from his home in Honolulu. I think the Tide are going to be in good shape when they offer, which likely will happen Wednesday or Thursday.

Cheney visited Tuscaloosa last Friday and is set to announce his commitment on Thursday. I have a strong feeling that he’s going to choose Alabama.

Young and Handy are from Mississippi and both are very high on the Tide. Young had Alabama as his top school back in February. He has since backed off naming the Tide his top team because he didn’t want to appear that he was set on Alabama. Handy named Alabama his dream school before abruptly committing to LSU. That commitment lasted for a few weeks. Handy will be in Tuscaloosa this weekend.

Note: I think Bama will also land 4-star DE Nathan Pickering for a total of 6 DL. 4-star DE Justin Eboigbe is another strong possibility, perhaps in place of Handy or Young, or if Bama doesn't land one of the others listed.

ETA: I think Bama may also take 6 LBs -- perhaps only 4 OL and 1-2 WRs. We can sign 27 total -- see Top Targets list in 2nd post of this thread.

Interesting.

With it looking like Rashad Cheney will commit, I'm now thinking Dale may not be higher than 7th on the board. I could be wrong of course. I didn't think Cheney was as high as he apparently is.

Bama likes its DTs to be athletic every-down players now due to the prevelance of hunh spread offenses. Dale is overweight and slower than those other DTs listed.

Since Cheney is more of a versatile 3-tech-DT/DE prospect vs Dale being more of a NT prospect in a 3-4 D-front, Cheney's commitment alone may not affect Dale's standing with Bama. I think it's more a matter of how many DLs Bama plans to take and who they can land.

Alabama offers 5-star DT Tuitele (BamaOnLine)

quote:

The 4,315-mile journey from Honolulu to Tuscaloosa paid off for 5-star defensive tackle Faatui Tuitele as Alabama offered the nation’s No. 2 defensive tackle on his unofficial visit Wednesday.

The Honolulu (Hawaii) St. Louis product (the same high school as Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa) made his inaugural visit to the Capstone this week, a trip that’s been in the works since February.

“That would definitely be one of the big ones that I have,” Tuitele told BOL earlier this year if the Tide should offer. “I’ve been talking a lot to Coach Tosh Lupoi. They really want me to come out to visit in April to come watch one of their practices and see the facilities and everything.”

Tuitele has shown no hesitation about traveling beyond the West Coast for college. Last month he visited LSU, Oklahoma, and Texas. He’ll be at Ohio State later this week after leaving Alabama, too.

The offer from the Crimson Tide is an intriguing one considering Tuitele’s ties to Tagovailoa. In fact, it’s Tagovailoa’s title-game performance that really peaked the five-star defensive tackle’s interest in the program.

“Him just playing on the national championship stage, it kind of already influenced me to want to be a part of that,” Tuitele said. “His actions spoke for themselves.”

It’s not clear how much longer Tuitele will keep his recruitment going, especially considering he hasn’t used official visits yet. One thing is clear: Alabama is on the hunt for defensive linemen in its 2019 class, and Tuitele fits the bill for what the staff is looking for.

At 6-foot-4, 299 pounds, Tuitele is rated the No. 2 defensive tackle and the No. 24 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings.

Stay tuned to BOL for more reaction on this offer.

Alabama offers 5-star Hawaiian DT, former HS teammate of Tua Tagovailoa, Faatui Tuitele

Faatui Tuitele has a chance to be the next 5-star Hawaiian to choose Alabama.
quote:

Faatui Tuitele, a 5-star defensive tackle from St. Louis School (Honolulu), is currently making his first visit to Alabama. Before the former high school teammate of Tua Tagovailoa’s left for home, the Crimson Tide offered him a scholarship.

Tuitele, the nation’s No. 2 defensive tackle, is a priority for the Tide. The team only waited to offer until now because it wanted to see if his interest in Alabama was legit. Making an unofficial visit from Hawaii to Alabama certainly shows interest that goes beyond what he can say in interviews and all of that.

RELATED: Can Alabama sign the nation’s top 2 defensive tackles in 2019?

The 6-foot-4, 299-pound prospect told SEC Country last month that Tagovailoa’s success as a freshman was a big reason why he was interested in Alabama.

“Seeing Tua on the biggest stage and win a national championship — it really motivated me and gives me the confidence that I can set a path for myself and go to the East Coast and make a name for myself like he did,” Tuitele said. “Seeing what he did in the National Championship Game was mind-blowing. Just the year before, I was playing with him in the state championship game. The next year, he’s in the National Championship Game. He let everyone know that Hawaii players can hang with the big dogs.”

Tuitele will leave Alabama on Thursday before visiting Ohio State this Friday.

Rashad Cheney Jr. set to announce his commitment on Thursday

Rashad Cheney Jr. is fresh off a visit to Alabama last Friday, and he’s ready to announce his commitment to his school of choice on Thursday, he told SEC Country.

Cheney, a 4-star defensive tackle from Cedar Grove High School (Ellenwood, Ga.), likely will choose either Alabama or South Carolina when he announces his decision. I would be very surprised if he doesn’t end up choosing the Tide, however. Cheney is being recruited as a 3-technique by Alabama but has the versatility to play defensive end, too.

The 6-foot-3, 270-pound prospect originally was committed to Georgia before reopening his recruitment in January. Georgia is in good shape with 4-star defensive tackle Travon Walker, who’s the nation’s No. 3 player at the position, as well as with 4-star DT Jaelin Humphries and several others. His decision to de-commit from Georgia was viewed as a mutual parting of ways.

Even with Georgia being OK with Cheney departing its 2019 class, Alabama identified the nation’s No. 17 defensive tackle as one of its top targets. Cheney has been recruited by the Tide for longer than a year now. When former defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley was still on staff, he compared Cheney to one of the Alabama greats.

“He was just telling me that he liked my size and how athletic I am,” Cheney said at the time. “He compared me to Jonathan Allen. He said I could come to Alabama and be just like Jonathan Allen. For Coach Ansley to say that to me, that means I must have some special talent.” Allen, the former Alabama defensive lineman, was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by Washington.

If Cheney commits to the Tide on Thursday, he will be the team’s fifth commitment in the 2019 class and the first on the defensive line.

More elite visitors on campus

Tuitele wasn’t the only elite recruit on campus on Wednesday.  Devontae Dobbs, the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2019 class from Belleville (Mich.) High School, was on campus.

Dobbs visited Tuscaloosa last year for spring practice. At the time, he told SEC Country that he could see himself playing for Alabama one day and came away impressed with the weight room. That was echoed when we caught up with him earlier this year in Orlando, Fla., at the Future 50 event for the Under Armour All-America Game.

“The weight room was huge, but not huge just for looks,” Dobbs said. “It was big so extra work could be going on to strengthen players’ weaknesses. For example, you’re going to get bigger and stronger, but what if you needed better feet, too? The weight room provides them enough space to get that extra work done.”

Dobbs’ teammate at Belleville, Damon Payne, a 6-foot-4, 270-pound Class of 2021 defensive end, is also being recruited by Alabama. He met with Nick Saban on Wednesday.

On Thursday, two of Alabama’s top outside linebacker targets in this class, 4-star prospects  Lloyd Summerall (Auburndale, Fla.) and  Kevin Harris, (Loganville, Ga.) are expected in Tuscaloosa. Both are scheduled to meet with Saban individually.

Harris was in Tuscaloosa last week. Two visits in two weeks certainly wouldn’t be a bad thing for the Tide’s chances. Harris is down to Alabama, LSU and Miami. His decision likely will come down to the two SEC West schools.

As for Summerall, he told SEC Country last month that he was hoping to get back to Tuscaloosa. He said that 4-star safety commit Brendan Gant (Lakeland, Fla.) has been pushing for one of his good friends to join him in Tuscaloosa.

“They have a good chance,” Summerall said of Alabama. “I have to give them a shot, of course. With them in the running, you have to have them as one of your top schools. I’m looking for a school that can get me to the NFL, and if I feel like Alabama can do that for me, they’ll be in the mix.” Summerall is expected to stay in Tuscaloosa through Saturday.

Anthony Bradford, a 4-star, 6-foot-6, 344-pound offensive tackle from Michigan, is also expected on campus. He’ll meet with Saban as well.

We’ll have a look at the expected weekend visitors on Thursday. There are several major targets heading to town, including the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect in Kayvon Thibodeaux from Southern California.

In addition to Cheney, I'm hearing that we likely get one more commitment tomorrow (or if not, maybe later this weekend). Not sure who it is yet, but have deduced it might be one of the Harrises (Christian or Kevin).
