Previewing Auburn’s recruiting visitors this weekend

quote:

Mississippi contingent in Class of 2019

It’s been well documented how thoroughly Auburn is scouring the state of Mississippi in the 2019 class.

Auburn has offered double-digit prospects from Mississippi in this recruiting cycle. In fact, the Tigers have offered more recruits from Mississippi than Alabama. Auburn’s push started by hosting big-time prospects such as Nathan Pickering and Nakobe Dean, who have made visits in the last couple months. Their reactions have had a ripple effect in the Magnolia State.

This weekend will be one of the biggest for Auburn and its Mississippi push.

SEC Country has confirmed a few prospects throughout the week, but here is the full list of Class of 2019 prospects from Mississippi expected to be in town this weekend.

5-star LB Nakobe Dean
4-star DE Nathan Pickering

4-star DL Charles Moore
4-star DL Byron Young
3-star DL Jamond Gordon
3-star CB Raydarious Jones

Dean and Jones, high school teammates, were the first Mississippians to visit Auburn. They came at the end of January. Jones picked up an offer on his visit. Dean is one of Auburn’s top linebacker targets in the 2019 class and his return trip will be a big one for the Tigers.

Pickering makes a return trip, which is big for Auburn. He has told SEC Country that of the recruiting trips he’s taken this spring, the visit to the Plains made a major impression on him because of the laid-back feel of the Tigers coaching staff. Young hasn’t made a visit to Auburn yet, but he’ll come down after a visit to Alabama.

Gordon and Moore are already committed, but they’re at least looking around. Moore is the nation’s No. 84 overall prospect and is committed to Mississippi State. Gordon is committed to Ole Miss and is ranked outside the top 500.

Top 2020 DT schedule to make second spring visit

Mississippi’s influence at Auburn this weekend won’t be contained to the 2019 class.

McKinnley Jackson, from Lucedale, Miss., is the No. 1 defensive tackle in the 2020 class. He’s the No. 14 overall prospect. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound prospect has been to Auburn this spring for a junior day. He spent a lot of his time with defensive line coach Rodney Garner and area recruiter Marcus Woodson.

Apparently the impression they made will be enough to bring him back. Jackson will be at Auburn on Saturday.

What makes this visit interesting is the timing of his other recruiting plans. Jackson had been committed to LSU for three months. He made a visit to Auburn on March 3 and backed off his LSU commitment on March 8.

10 prospects ranked inside top 100 most likely to commit to Auburn

This is a slight variation on an Auburn recruiting question of the day that I answered a few weeks ago. That version honed in on how Auburn’s top-100 recruiting presence compared to previous recruiting cycles. In this edition, let’s take a look at who among the top-100 prospects has a chance of landing with the Tigers.

Auburn already has one top-100 prospect committed, quarterback Bo Nix.

Could more follow?

Here are the likely candidates:

No. 11 Clay Webb, offensive lineman

The top prospect in the state of Alabama generally chooses between the two in-state schools. Last year, Justyn Ross went against the trend and picked Clemson. Expect the 2019 class to revert back to tradition. Tennessee and Georgia will make pushes for Clay Webb. Georgia probably has a better chance of the two. But this has been — and will continue to be — an Iron Bowl recruiting battle. Webb has visited both in-state programs countless times in the last two years. He grew up a Crimson Tide fan, so many believe it’s only a matter of time before he chooses Alabama. Auburn won’t give up until he does — and likely won’t even stop then.

No. 24 Nakobe Dean, inside linebacker

Nakobe Dean (Horn Lake, Miss.) has already visited Auburn once this spring and is slated to make another trip this weekend. He is being recruited heavily by LSU, Georgia and Alabama, as well as the two in-state programs. Dean’s second trip to Auburn in as many months signals a growing interest in the Tigers given that his first trip to the Plains came this spring. When he returns, he’ll be alongside his high school teammate, Raydarious Jones, who accompanied him — and picked up an offer — on their initial visit. The fact they’re returning together for a second time indicates their growing interest to play together. Several other top programs, including Georgia most recently, have followed Auburn’s lead by offering Jones.

No. 49 Nathan Pickering, defensive end

Nathan Pickering (Seminary, Miss.) is being recruited heavily by all the big schools in the southeast. He has taken several visits this spring. Pickering expects to be back at Auburn in the near future. He’s not sure it’ll be this weekend, but it’s possible. Even if he has to alter his visit plans, Pickering wants to make it back to the Plains as soon as possible. His relationship with Marcus Woodson and the laid-back way Auburn coaches treated him on his first visit made a major impression. It’s never easy to pull Mississippi prospects out of Mississippi, but Auburn is making a serious effort with Pickering.

Biggest threat: Mississippi State

Everyone thinks they are landing Pickering.

No. 72 John Emery Jr., running back

John Emery is one of Auburn’s top-2 running back targets in the 2019 class. Noah Cain is the other. Emery visited Auburn earlier this month for junior day and was accompanied by his entire family. The 4-star running back from Destrehan, La. didn’t know much about the Tigers when he arrived but he left calling them a major contender. Emery will be a top running back target for Georgia, Alabama and LSU, as well. In fact, those schools likely have Cain and Emery at the top of their wish list. In Emery’s case, Auburn is most mindful of the home-state program.

Biggest threat: LSU

This kid's recruitment is so strange. He's a Top 75 player overall, seemingly without any Junior film, and may not have a committable offer from LSU due to their interest in Noah Cain.

No. 75 Jaylen McCollough, safety

Jaylen McCollough (Powder Springs, Ga.) made a mid-week visit to Auburn last month that stood out. He isn’t crazy about junior days because it doesn’t allow for much 1-on-1 time with coaches. McCollough got plenty of that when he made his weekday visit to the Plains, however. The 4-safety sat down with defensive backs coach Greg Brown to talk in-depth about what his role would be in the Tigers defensive backfield. McCollough liked what he heard from the veteran safeties coach. He also likes what he’s been hearing out of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Columbia, S.C. It wouldn’t be shocking to see the Georgia Bulldogs become a factor either.

No. 95 Jaren Handy, defensive end

Jaren Handy (New Augusta, Miss.) recently committed and de-committed from LSU, so I wouldn’t expect to see him make any immediate decisions. He reopened his recruitment to make sure he took a proper amount of time to make the decision. However, Auburn’s communication with Handy was a big reason for his decision to step off his LSU commitment. The Tigers weren’t the only ones trying to convince him to reconsider his commitment, but they were a key reason. Handy will now make his first visit since his de-commitment to Auburn, which has to be a positive sign for the Tigers.

So I looked up Nakobe Dean's teammate after seeing him mentioned in the article above. It appears we offered him back on February 3rd according to his 247 profile, but I have never heard of him before today and he wasn't listed on our offer page when I updated the offers late last month. Here is his info (he plays QB, but is ranked as an Athlete):

Yes, it is. Maybe Bama is recruiting Emery hard, but there's not been much if any visibility of it. I wonder if maybe he was injured his junior season or if maybe there are concerns about his grades and qualifying, or his character.

Report: Bama QB Tua Tagovailoa broke finger, required surgery (BamaOnLine)
quote:

We now know what happened to Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's hand during Tuesday's practice.

His father, Galu Tagovailoa, told KHON2 Sports Director Rob DeMello that his son suffered a broken index finger on his throwing hand in a "freak accident" after colliding with a teammate during a drill. Tagovailoa was taken from the practice field to a local hospital where he underwent successful surgery.

Tagovailoa was back at practice Thursday in a limited capacity and took part in footwork drills, but didn't throw.

"I asked how his hand was, and he said God is good and that the Holy Spirit is healing his hand," Galu Tagovailoa told the local Honolulu news station.

Nick Saban didn't discuss the severity of Tua's injury earlier this week, but said he was expected back in a few days.

[Fast-Fwd thru QB competition ]

Tagovailoa's father told the local news station he expects his son to be ready for Alabama's spring game on April 21.

So far today, I've read:
(a) Index finger broken (article above);
(b) Index finger broken and thumb sprained;
(c) Bone between thumb & index finger broken;
(d) Ring finger broken.
I think I'll go with (a) what Tua's dad said.

This is from January 25th on Tahj Williams:

quote:

The mystery man Ole Miss offered at linebacker on Wednesday clarified a few things Thursday evening.

First, he understands where things stand with Ole Miss.

"Coach (Wesley) McGriff was very up front with me," said 2018 Clinch County (Ga.) linebacker Tahj Williams. "We're going to have to see how things shake out. He told me, if one of the linebackers ahead of me hesitates, he'll take me. I understand where I am."

That's why Williams is holding his options open and will take an official visit to Division II Valdosta State this weekend. He plans to visit Ole Miss on the weekend of Feb. 2.

Williams is unrated by the major recruiting services and did not even have a recruiting profile at the time his high school coach tweeted out the Ole Miss offer on Wednesday. He stands 6-1 and 210 pounds and his film shows he is a hard-hitting, efficient tackler. His offer sheet, until Wednesday, consisted of Valdosta State, Wingate, Albany State, Carson-Newman, Lincoln University and Hutchinson Community College.

After the Rebels conditionally offered, Williams said he was contacted Thursday by Central Florida and Middle Tennessee State.

"Ole Miss just wants me to come in and see how I like it, so I plan on visiting there next week," Williams said.

Williams said he realized late that grades were an important part of college football recruiting, but he says he has rallied and is now fully qualified. He believes academics stunted his recruitment.

"An offer like this is something I've been waiting on, something to open up. I'm excited about the opportunity," he said.
