Bama Online Report:
Alabama OC Brian Daboll could return to NFL
Still in search for a defensive coordinator following Jeremy Pruitt's departure to Tennessee, Nick Saban may soon be without his head man on the offensive side of the football.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport believes Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll could be heading back to the NFL after one season with the Crimson Tide, where he helped the program to its fifth national championship since 2009 on Monday night.
Brian Daboll, the Alabama offensive coordinator who impressed a couple nights ago replacing his starting quarterback leading to a national title, could return to the NFL,” Rapoport said Wednesday.
Daboll, 42, was a Broyles Award finalist this season after helping Alabama's offense finish in the SEC's Top 5 in nearly every statistical category. The Crimson Tide had the second fewest turnovers in college football (10) and managed the most rushing yards per game (250.6) in the Saban era.
Daboll coached 15 years in the NFL before leaving Bill Belichick's staff as New England's tight ends coach in 2017 to call plays in Tuscaloosa. Daboll is Alabama's sixth offensive coordinator under Saban and third in two seasons.
There's currently six offensive coordinator vacancies in the NFL including the Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns.

How Tagovailoa's hand size compares to NFL stars Wilson, Brees
Normally early comparisons of a college QB to Russell Wilson are outlandish. But Tua Tagovailoa does have one big thing in common with the Super Bowl champion.
Tua Tagovailoa became an instant Alabama legend Monday evening when the true freshman QB entered the national championship game and led the Crimson Tide to a come-from-behind 26-23 victory over Georgia.
He also did it at a listed 6-foot-1, 219 pounds.
Why is that important? Well, the NFL comparisons started rolling out in the hours after Tagovailoa’s national introduction. And in case you’ve managed to tune out all draft talk ever, height is kind of important to those NFL types.
So it should come as no surprise the comparisons to Russell Wilson (5-foot-11) have already started thanks to radio personality Colin Cowherd, who called Tagovailoa a “left-handed” version of the Seahawks QB. That's a typical comparison for a shorter mobile quarterback. It could also have some merit.
Looking really far ahead to Tagovailoa’s NFL future, he has one big advantage over other QBs his height – hand size.
When measured at the 2016 Army All-American Bowl, Tagovailoa’s mitts checked in at 10.13 inches, outstretched, from pinky to thumb.
That was larger than all but 12 players at the Army Bowl that year. For perspective, Georgia QB Jake Fromm, the other true freshman signal caller in the national title game, had 8.75-inch hands.
Hand size isn’t the end all be all for a quarterback. Sam Darnold, likely to be a top 5 pick in the 2018 NFL draft, started at USC with only nine-inch hands. But it is a critical measurement according to ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit.
This seems to have translated in the NFL over the years, especially in regards to quarterbacks on the shorter end of the spectrum. Drew Brees (10.25 inches), Wilson (10.25 inches) and Brett Favre (10.38 inches) had massive hands, according to the New York Times. Keep in mind, the average length of a male hand is 7.44 inches.
Tagovailoa, really only 6-foot¾ when measured NFL Combine style at the Army Bowl, does have big hands.
That might help explain his 64 percent completion rate as a true freshman. Then again, Fromm, at 6-foot-2, finished 2017 completing 62 percent of his passes, so maybe not.
Either way, the way-too-early comparisons of a college quarterbcak to Wilson aren’t being overstated for once.
Both Tagovailoa and Wilson do have massive mitts.

8.76 in I said "Honey, where's my tape measure?" I should have been a QB, instead of a HS TE.

Recruiting question of the day: Is it more likely Alabama gets 2 5-star cornerbacks or none?
quote:
The Man Formerly Known as Mike Hawk @MikeHawk6_9
Is Savion Smith being used to recruit Surtain away from LSU? Also what's more likely, Bama getting none, or getting both Campbell and Surtain?
To answer your first question, Mike, I am sure Saivion Smith, who transferred from LSU to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College last summer and is now at Alabama, has had a conversation or two with 5-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr., who is considered a lean to LSU.
But Smith didn’t leave Baton Rouge with any ill will toward LSU. He told SEC Country that he still has relationships with a lot of the players there. He also said that LSU coach Ed Orgeron was very understanding of his reasons, which were personal, for leaving school.
So even though Smith is now at Alabama, I highly doubt he’d tell Surtain negative things about the school he left.
As for the second part of your question as to what’s more likely: Alabama getting both 5-star cornerback Tyson Campbell and Patrick Surtain Jr. or none? I would definitely say none. Neither Campbell or Surtain are considered leans to Alabama. But the good news is that the team will host Campbell and Surtain next weekend for official visits. That’s the ideal weekend for any major recruit to visit because Alabama will celebrate its national championship on Jan. 20. You better believe the recruits in town will have a front-row seat to the parade.
Campbell will visit Georgia this weekend, which is considered the favorite to land him, while Surtain will visit LSU. It’s not a bad thing for Alabama to follow because it’ll give the Tide a chance to stifle any momentum those schools pick up this weekend.
It’ll also be interesting to see how the loss of defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley affects both prospects as they did have a good relationship with him. But, remember, Nick Saban himself is very involved with coaching defensive backs.

5-star prospect, top OL target set to visit Alabama during national championship celebration
quote:
Nicholas Petit-Frere visiting Alabama next weekend
Nicholas Petit-Frere has been Alabama’s top offensive line target for several months now. The Crimson Tide will get their last chance to impress the 5-star offensive tackle out of Berkeley Prep (Tampa, Fla.) on Jan. 19, SEC Country confirmed.
That weekend will arguably be the team’s biggest recruiting weekend in the lead up to National Signing Day on Feb. 7. Alabama will celebrate its national championship win over Georgia on Jan. 20. Because of that, the team will likely try to get all of its top remaining targets in town that weekend because Tuscaloosa will be buzzing and it’ll be an opportunity to show the recruits that if they choose Alabama, that they too can be a part of a championship parade one day.
As for Petit-Frere, one source close to the program told SEC Country that he believes the nation’s No. 3 offensive tackle is going to choose either Alabama or Ohio State, which he visits on Feb. 2. According to the source, Petit-Frere wants to choose the program that he feels best suits his dream of making it to the NFL. Right now, those programs are Alabama and Ohio State. It also doesn’t hurt both program’s chances when it comes to landing Petit-Frere now that Notre Dame’s offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, who was one of the best in all of college football, was hired by the Chicago Bears. Petit-Frere is strongly considering the Fighting Irish.
We were told that Petit-Frere, who values education and a degree, feels like the schools he’s still considering: Alabama, Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State all offer a good enough education for him.
“At the end of the day, it will come down to what I feel is best for me,” Petit-Frere told SEC Country last week. “I’m just going to see how it rolls and go from there. I’m trying to learn about all the schools recruiting me before I commit.”

At least with got the last visit out of the teams that are the main competition. Sucks we don't have a db coach yet.

Who else will visit Alabama next weekend?
Expect this list to grow in the coming days now that the championship parade date is set, but, right now, this is who SEC Country has as visiting Tuscaloosa next weekend:
5-star cornerback Tyson Campbell
4-star quarterback James Foster
3-star linebacker commit Vernon Jackson
3-star defensive end Malik Langham
4-star wide receiver Justyn Ross
3-star cornerback Eddie Smith
5-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr.
4-star wide receiver signee Xavier Williams

Two names to know at DB
We mentioned him above as a visitor next weekend, but Eddie Smith, a 3-star prospect out of Slidell, La., is being evaluated by the staff. The top defensive back targets remain the same as they’ve been for quite some time now: Tyson Campbell, Patrick Surtain Jr. and Isaac Taylor-Stuart.
Smith doesn’t have an offer yet, but don’t be surprised if one is extended his way next weekend when he visits.
Another name to know is 4-star junior college cornerback Benjie Franklin out of Navarro College (Corsicana, Texas). Franklin recorded 62 tackles, 6 interceptions, 19 pass breakups, 4 tackles for loss and a sack in 10 games this season. Franklin is expected to visit Auburn this weekend and Ole Miss on Feb. 2. He’s another defensive back the Tide have their eyes on.
Nick Saban said that he would like to add 5 defensive backs in the 2018 class. Alabama has 3 signed in this recruiting cycle in 4-star prospects Jalyn Armour-Davis, Josh Jobe and Saivion Smith.

Something to keep an eye on?
Texas A&M decided to retain Terry Price on its coaching staff. Price will coach defensive ends on new coach Jimbo Fisher’s staff. Why is that important to Alabama recruiting?
Well, 4-star Crimson Tide defensive end commit Bobby Brown was committed to the Aggies before de-committing from TAMU in December and choosing Alabama a few days later.
Brown has a very close relationship with Price, and now that it’s official that he’s remaining in College Station, perhaps that opens the door back up for the Aggies to get back in the mix for him.
Brown told SEC Country that he’s not planning on visiting any school this weekend.

So, um, this is interesting.

So I started researching Jeff Banks after this news from Feldman. He landed 5-stars Christian Kirk and Kyle Allen a couple years ago and was the lead recruiter for DE Max Wright.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. He was also the Aggies lead recruiter for Isaac Taylor-Stuart.

Waddle wasn't listed as one of his targets, but he appeared to be the lead on all of their other top guys.
That's pretty damn skrong.

He's playing in the Polynesian Bowl this weekend. I'm not sure who out of the Taylor's or Stuart's is a Pacific Islander, but he's playing in the game.
It sounds like his OV will be a mid-week trip which can be a good thing. He'd have all of the staff's undivided attention.
