Three-Point Stance: Thoughts on the Under Armour Future 50

Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell’s thought-provoking Three-Point Stance is here with some recruiting tidbits from the Future 50, five players who passed the eyeball test at the event and some Big 12 Early Signing Period Awards.

FUTURE 50 IMPRESSIONS

The Under Armour Future50, a gathering of some of the best underclass prospects in the nation, always brings some interesting recruiting news. Here are some thoughts…

Star linebacker Owen Pappoe showed up wearing a Nebraska hat and an Ohio State sweatshirt, but neither team is in the mix. He was set to make his announcement at the Under Armour Game on Thursday, but decided to slow things down. Who would have been the choice? My best guess is it would have been Georgia in a tight battle with Clemson, but now Alabama and others are pushing into the mix. Tennessee is a team to watch as well, with his relationship with incoming head coach Jeremy Pruitt.

Former Oklahoma commitment Theo Wease, one of the best looking wide receivers you’ll see, has Ohio State and USC as his top two, with Oklahoma No. 3.

Former LSU commitment Kenyon Green still says the Tigers are his dream school, but watch out for Texas A&M, Texas and Oklahoma here. Alabama and others are in there, too, but he told me the Aggies, Longhorns and Sooners were the biggest threat.

Offensive lineman Dontae Lucas told me Miami, Alabama and Florida State would be in his top five - if he had one.

Many feel it could end up being a FSU vs. Texas A&M battle for ex-Noles commitment Jalen Curry, but watch out for LSU for the talented wide receiver, as well.

Massive OL Evan Neal appears to be a strong Miami lean, to me.

OL Deyavie Hammond is decommitting from Alabama soon, and I think the reason is his interest in Georgia and what he hears about Bulldogs OL coach Sam Pittman.

LB Nakobe Dean is all over the map when it comes to favorites, and appears wide open, but if he stays home it will be Ole Miss.

LB Shane Lee has been to Penn State the most, but watch out for Ohio State and Michigan here, as he mentioned those two schools often to everyone at registration.

FSU fans hoping they can get in on former Oregon commitment Arjei Henderson because of the Willie Taggart connection might be disappointed. Texas and Oklahoma are his top two, he told me, and the ‘Noles aren’t that high. I think the Sooners lead.

I bolded the paragraphs of players we have offered.

FIVE PHYSICAL SPECIMENS

The registration for the Future50 also brought some physical specimens through the lobby of the hotel, led by these guys …

Evan Neal – Neal is an absolute mountain of a prospect at around 6-foot-7 and 360 pounds with very little bad weight. He’s going to be a monster in college.

Shane Lee – Lee has a future as a bodybuilder if football doesn’t work out, as the linebacker has bowling ball arms and is built like a brick.

Theo Wease – Wease gets bigger each time I see him and has tight end size with wide receiver skill. He’s going to be tough for any cornerback to handle in college.

Clay Webb – I put Webb on here for the weight he has lost, as he’s down 40 pounds since the summer. He has lost all his bad weight, and he didn’t have that much to start with.

Wanya Morris – Morris isn’t carved out of marble but I like his length and the amount of size he can add to his frame once he hits a college weight room.

Y'all may remember Evan Neal. He was committed to us for 13 minutes back when he was a Sophomore.

Shane Lee is teammates with Eyabi Anoma and looked like an animal in that nationally televised game a few weeks ago.

Clay Webb is going to be dominant.

Army Bowl: Where five uncommitted players might land

quote:

The third day at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl didn’t feature any action on the field, but there was plenty of scuttlebutt off it, as some of the players met with the media. Today we take a look at five more uncommitted prospects and try to project where they’ll end up.

Jaylen Waddle

The contenders:
Alabama, Texas A&M, Texas, Florida State, Oregon

Breakdown: Waddle is one of the hardest players to project in this class, and he’s done a great job of keeps fans, reporters and even coaches guessing about where he will end up signing. But right now, it appears to be shaping up to be an SEC battle between Alabama and Texas A&M, with Oregon serving as the wild card. A lot will happen in his recruitment over the next month, but his affinity for Jimbo Fisher, combined with the chance to stay close to home and play in the SEC at Texas A&M makes the Aggies the slight favorite.

The pick: Texas A&M

By my knowledge Peterson has never even visited Knoxville, but he's going to commit to Tennessee this weekend.

Why the urgency to announce anything?

Isaac Taylor-Stuart

The contenders:
USC, Texas A&M, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee

Breakdown: Despite his lofty ranking, Taylor-Stuart has taken the process slowly and will still have at least three official visits in January. Those trips to USC, Tennessee and Georgia will play a major part in his decision-making process, making it even tough to project. But despite his love for the Aggies, the fact that he isn’t as familiar with the new staff could open the door for USC to keep him close to home. I’m going to make the safe pick and say the Trojans end up winning out in the end.

The pick: USC

Michael Thompson

The contenders:
USC, Missouri, Nebraska

Breakdown: Nebraska is late to the party, and the Huskers are trying to become a factor in Thompson's recruitment, but is he too far down the road with the Tigers and Trojans? Missouri has been a constant presence in his recruitment since the beginning, and despite his flirtations with other programs and his relationship with USC commit Trevor Trout, it’s likely the Tigers end up keeping him close to home.

The pick: Missouri

It was literally like two days, wasn't it?

Thank goodness for an elite instate OL class, because the ones from out-of-state have been all over the map.

Looks like a thumper. 6-0 230.

Can push for a guard spot from day one. Alabama will lose Piersbacher and Cotton after 2018.

Penei Sewell

The contenders:
Alabama, Oregon, Utah, USC, UCLA

Breakdown: Alabama was my pick for Sewell back in the spring, and that was before he had even secured an offer from the Tide. But Oregon has surfaced as a very real threat, and despite the departure of Willie Taggart, the coaches Sewell knows best, Mario Cristobal and Joe Salave’a are still in place and appear as if they will be for the long term. Sewell is still genuinely undecided and will likely put a lot of emphasis on in-home visits in the coming weeks before deciding. So do I stick with the Tide or flip my pick to the Ducks? Right now, I’m going to stick with my first instinct and say he ends up in Tuscaloosa.

The pick: Alabama.

I think this is the first guy Rivals has predicted to Alabama out of everyone left on our board.

Because everyone else not signed is doing it since it is nationally televised and they get their moment.

He probably wants to announce before Pruitt hires Rush Probst once he returns to Tennessee. That way, it won't look like Probst was hired specifically to land Peterson.

He was already committed!!!

UA All-America Game: Players predict where uncommitted will sign

quote:

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Most players at this year’s Under Armour All-America game have put their college recruitments in the past. The bulk of the participants signed a letter of intent during the early signing period in December and are locked in. Some, however, have maintained some level of mystery. This week, Rivals.com gave a number of All-Americans the chance to guess where their unsigned peers may land. Those responses are listed below.

Army Bowl: Players make commitment predictions

quote:

Woody Wommack talks to a few U.S. Army All-Americans to see where they think their fellow players will end up.

Prospects discussed:

Amon-Ra St. Brown
Brendan Radley-Hiles
Patrick Surtain
Tyson Campbell

William Barnes

ETA: Don't bother watching this one. William Barnes was the only one to make a prediction on Surtain and Campbell and he predicted Florida State for Surtain and Texas A&M for Campbell.
