Army Bowl: Day 2 practice news and notes
quote:
SAN ANTONIO – With cold temperatures outside, Day 2 of U.S. Army All-American Bowl practices were once again held indoors at the Alamodome. The East and the West took turns running hour-long practices in the morning before combining for 7-on-7 and offense-defense one-on-ones in the afternoon. Here is the biggest news of note from the day.

-When talking Tuesday’s top performers beyond Parsons, five-stars Amon-Ra St. Brown, Brenden Radley-Hiles and JT Daniels all deserve mention as their play from Day 2 of practices stood out. There is a lot of talent in that West defensive backfield beyond Radley-Hiles. Texas signees Jalen Green and Caden Sterns have both been impressive all week long, playing with great length and getting in passing lanes. Clemson signee Xavier Thomas was more vocal and energetic today from his defensive end position and he had a few nice plays in the backfield during the team session. Four-star Chris Murray has been the West’s most consistent offensive linemen this week, while Michigan signee Aidan Hutchinson woke up with a strong showing on Day 2 that included a lot of time spent in the backfield. Josh Jobe, an Alabama signee, who projects as a safety, played physically and had a nice interception later in the day.

-Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage is one of the most talented programs in the country and they have three Army All-Americans this year. Five-star Patrick Surtain, Rivals100 defensive back Tyson Campbell, and four-star defensive linemen Nesta Silvera all had a good day of practice. Surtain and Campbell were seemingly making big plays on every other rep. Surtain, who is considering LSU, Alabama, and a few others, was more physical today and it paid off in the form of an interception and multiple pass breakups. Campbell, who is looking at Alabama, Georgia, Miami, and Ohio State, showed off excellent instincts and broke on the pass very well. There was one rep in particular where he was so quick to get a jump on the ball that he literally ran out of his cleat. Silvera, a Miami commit, continued to play with a lot of energy and was a constant presence in the offensive backfield.

-Houston four-star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle carried Monday’s momentum into Tuesday’s practice, but that momentum was quickly interrupted when he came up hobbled with a knee injury. Waddle missed all but the first half hour of Tuesday’s practice and was limping along the sideline with ice on his left knee.

5. Tensions mount
On Sunday and Monday, both teams solely had intra-squad practices on their own field. But on Tuesday the two combined for some one-on-one action, which didn’t last as long as anticipated after a large scuffle during linemen drills. It began with Nicholas Petit-Frere going against Devin O’Rourke, but ended with a pile of about 10 players needing to be pulled apart by coaches. Tensions were high at the conclusion, with several players, including Keondre Coburn, in need of calming talks from the staff. It also resulted with Petit-Frere at the bottom of the pile with a slight shoulder injury, but he seemed to work his way through that a few minutes later. This is not the norm during all-star settings, so it’ll be interesting to see if any of this tension carries over to the game on Thursday night.

QUICK HITS
Petit-Frere continued to dominate. While the one-the-one session between the two teams was limited due to the scuffle, he did manage to stone five-star defensive end Eyabi Anoma twice during his opportunity.
Elijah Moore continued to be one of the top wide receivers on Team Spotlight. He may not be the biggest or fastest receiver in Orlando, but he consistently gets open, is extremely smooth and has showcased great hands.
It will be interesting to see Tommy Brown’s maturation at Alabama. He brings a lot to the table, but just needs to be more consistent. There are plays where he dominates, while at other times he almost seems confused. The foundation is there to make an elite offensive lineman, but it may take some time to see the finished product.
Matthew Jones, who has been lining up at center, has steadily improved this week. He struggled early on, but seems to have really embraced his opportunity in Orlando over the last two days. Could this also be a sign of things to come for him at Ohio State? He signed as a guard, but perhaps center will be his position of the future.
Justyn Ross is a complete package at receiver. At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, he's very fluid in his movements, with long arms, deceptive speed and great route running that should make him a star at the next level.
B.J. Foster has had some ups and downs this week, but reeled in a great interception while covering Xavier Williams. He undercut a nice pass and dived for the grab, while destroying an advertisement sign in the process.
A.J. Lytton has put together a solid week in Orlando. He’s a tough competitor who will go up against anyone, including bigger and stronger receivers such as Ross and Justin Shorter.

UA All-America Game: Five teams that should be pleased
quote:
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Day 3 of practice at the 2018 Under Armour All-America game is in the book and, aside from Wednesday’s walkthrough, tune-up time is over. The past three days of workouts provided more promise for some fan bases than it did for others, as the futures of many major programs were on display. Today, Rivals.com runs through a few of the college teams that should be pleased with how things unfolded.

ALABAMA
The first few days of practice saw the Bama-bound duo of Xavier Williams and Quay Walker turn in standout performances. The play of Williams, an explosive wide receiver, was most encouraging, as the four-star prospect who has sometimes struggled with drops at past events put those concerns to rest as he showcased sure hands and caught nearly everything thrown in his direction. Walker looked to be one of the more explosive linebackers at the event and impressed despite playing an environment not made to showcase players at his position. Tide fans should be happy that their signees seem to be following a positive trajectory as they head toward Tuscaloosa.

UA All-America Game: SEC schools trying to flip Quay Walker
Just de-commit already.
quote:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Quay Walker has been very quiet about his recruitment for the last few months. He committed to Alabama in June, with somewhat of a surprise announcement, but has not been considered a strong Tide commitment since late summer.
Walker has remained in contact with Auburn and Georgia since his commitment and now Florida and Tennessee with recent coaching changes have put themselves in this race.
Walker has not decommitted from Alabama, but he does not plan to take an official visit there, so the odds of Nick Saban keeping this one may not be in his favor right now.
IN HIS OWN WORDS: "I am still committed to Alabama, but all the schools are really even for me," said Walker. "I really like coach [Jeremy] Pruitt, so him leaving for Tennessee is a factor for me looking around and taking visits."
SCHOOLS IN THE MIX: "I am still considering Tennessee, Florida, Georgia and Auburn. I do not have a No. 2 school right now. All will be even until after I take my official visits and see what it is like."
OFFICIAL VISIT WILL BE KEY: "When I go on my official visits I will be looking for coaches I can trust and how I connect with the team. I am going to Auburn January 12, Georgia January 19, Auburn January 26 and I am not sure on February 2 yet. It may be Tennessee. I don't plan to take an official visit to Alabama because my mom has already been there."
FLORIDA: "Florida is a school that I have been liking. It is my dream school and not many people know that. The old staff never stopped recruiting me, but the new staff has come on hard. Trey Dean is in my ear, so we will see where it goes when I get there."
TENNESSEE: "I have known Kevin Sherrer (Defensive coordinator) for a while now and we have a good relationship just like me and coach Pruitt do. He has already been down to see me and he is a reason I am looking at Tennessee."
GEORGIA: "I love Kirby Smart and the kind of coach he is. I have been talking to them a lot and the environment there is great. Justin Fields is on me hard too, so I like Georgia."
AUBURN: "I have a great connection with the Auburn coaches and with Big Cat (Markaviest Bryant) there, I know a lot about them. I have visited there a lot and they have never stopped recruiting me."
ALABAMA: "They have a great team every year, but with Pruitt leaving and I am hearing rumors about coach [Derrick] Ansley (Defensive backs) too, so I have some questions. They also have great depth at linebacker, so that is something else I am looking at. I still am a commitment, so nothing has changed yet."
RIVALS REACTION: This is going to be one to watch between now and February 7. Walker is going to take visits, he is going to have coaches from numerous schools in his home in the coming weeks and there will be a big decision made early in February? Will he stick with Alabama? It does not look good for the Tide right now, but if they convince Walker to take an official visit there, then that could swing things back in their favor. The one to watch closely is Tennessee with Pruitt at the top and Sherrer and Chris Rumph both assistants that have strong relationships with Walker. Georgia has been lurking here and the Bulldogs got Walker on campus for a game late in the season and Smart's program could be the one challenging Alabama at this time. This one is still far from over.
Just de-commit already.

Rivals100 WR Jaylen Waddle considers his final six
quote:
SAN ANTONIO – Among the unsigned Rivals100 prospects left in the 2018 class, few are still considering as many programs Houston (Tex.) Episcopal wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. With no more official visits available to him, the four-star is left to contemplate his finalists over the next month.
THE LATEST
Waddle declared his top six schools of Alabama, Florida State, Oregon, TCU, Texas and Texas A&M back in September, and has maintained that group even with the Seminoles and Aggies going through coaching changes. He took official visits to all but Texas, but is trying to schedule an unofficial visit to Austin before National Signing Day if his basketball schedule will allow him to make that trip. Head coach in-home visits remain, but otherwise Waddle is left with his previous experiences and research to make this decision.
IN HIS WORDS
“I already have good relationships; it will just be wherever I feel like I’m comfortable, stability and where I think I am going to be successful at the most. I’ll really sit down and look at it, take all six schools and just chop them down and see which one is for me.”
RIVALS’ REACTION
There has been a lot of Texas and Texas A&M talk around Waddle, but the Houston-area prospect said the other four schools are definitely still in the conversation. He has the closest relationship with the group of commits and signees at Texas, but has the closest coach relationship with Marcus Arroyo at Oregon. He feels the systems at TCU and Texas fit his game best, but honestly felt comfortable on every campus he visited. Those are the choices Waddle will wade through before he signs on Feb. 7, but he said a decision could come before then.

Army Bowl: Change of plans for Rivals100 DB Kelvin Joseph?
quote:
SAN ANTONIO – The Early Signing Period came and went for Rivals100 Baton Rouge (La.) Scotlandville defensive back Kelvin "Fat" Joseph without much fanfare. Joseph had long planned to wait until the traditional National Signing Day to make his final decision. But despite not feeling any pressure from his finalists – LSU, Alabama, Auburn and Florida State – Joseph said he might change his plans and commit during Saturday's broadcast of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
"I've been thinking about it just to get everything over with," Joseph said. "They talked to me about doing it on TV but we haven't really finalized anything yet."
Joseph said regardless of whether he announces a decision on Saturday, he's still planning on taking at least three official visits, with LSU (Jan. 20), Alabama (Jan. 26) and Auburn (Feb. 2.) already set.
"I'm still going to take all my trips no matter what," Joseph said. "That was one of the reasons I wasn't worried about signing early."
Joseph was committed to the Tigers for the better part of his recruitment, and conventional wisdom says that's where he'll end up again. On Monday he admitted that he's still feeling a strong pull to stay close to home.
"We still have a good relationship and I know everything I need to know about the program," Joseph said. "I just want to see how everything is going to play out and I de-committed to take a look at my options so that's what I'm trying to do."
While Joseph has alway seemed bound to play in Death Valley, Alabama has long worked to get him on campus for visits and remain in the picture. The Tide were quickly considered a contender when Joseph re-opened his recruitment and he said they remain firmly in the mix.
"They have a need for defensive backs," Joseph said. "They are losing a lot in their secondary and they need guys to come in and play. There's an opening for me to come in and work hard and have a chance to play."
Auburn is hoping to pull off a late coup and steal Joseph away from a pair of SEC rivals, but in order to do so the Tigers will have to make quite the impression during his official visit next month.
"They have the same thing, a need in the secondary for guys to come in," Joseph said. "They like my versatility and said that they could see me playing corner or safety."

Rivals100 DT Michael Thompson has a team in mind
quote:
SAN ANTONIO - St. Louis defensive tackle Michael Thompson was one of 32 prospects in the Rivals100 who did not sign in the early period, but as January begins the four-star is starting to see one temam emerge.
“I have a good feeling of where I want to go,” Thompson said. “I am going to take a couple visits, though, to make sure that I am set and that I’ll be good wherever I choose to go.”
Thompson is keeping that school he has a good feeling about to himself for now. He took official visits to USC and Missouri already, and has a couple schools he wants to see before the February signing period.
“I know for sure I am going to Miami and Alabama,” he said. “I still have to pick on that fifth one.”
Nebraska has a chance to be that fifth and final official visit. The Cornhuskers were a strong contender early in the process for Thompson, and have resumed their interest under new head coach Scott Frost.
“I am trying to contemplate if I want to do an official there,” Thompson said. “They just were talking about how they need someone my size up front to play as a run-stopper and pass rusher.”
USC was the first school Thompson officially visited back in November. He made that trip with fellow St. Louis defensive tackle and friend Trevor Trout, who subsequently committed to the Trojans.
“(Trout) just tells me to make the best choice for me,” Thompson said. “I talk to Coach K.U., the d-line coach, a lot. I talk to him about every other day, not just about recruiting, but about life.”
The most recent official visit Thompson took was to the home-state Missouri Tigers the weekend of Dec. 8.
“(Mizzou) just felt different because it was close to home and I am real familiar with the players because some of them are from St. Louis,” Thompson said. “I am familiar with the coaches because I am always around them and I always go there. Not only did I like it, but my mom liked it. She liked Coach (Brick) Haley a lot.”
Thompson said there are no other teams serious under consideration outside of the Alabama, Miami, Missouri, Nebraska and USC. He could wait to announce his decision on National Signing Day.
