Biggest takeaways as Alabama wraps up initial early signing period | SEC Country
quote:
One day into the early signing period, Alabama has the nation’s No. 6 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports team recruiting rankings.
The Tide signed 15 prospects Wednesday, including 13 4-star prospects and Class of 2017 greyshirt defensive lineman Jarez Parks. A lot of work is ahead for Alabama’s coaching staff, but the good news is there are lots of major targets still out there for the Tide to improve their ranking.
Here are the biggest takeaways from Alabama’s early signing period, as well as a few things to expect going forward.

Which 2018 signee has biggest offensive role next season?
Out of the current signees, I think Emil Ekiyor, the nation’s No. 2 center from Cathedral High School (Indianapolis), is someone who could see the field immediately for Alabama.
The Tide will need to replace starting center Bradley Bozeman and backup center J.C. Hassenauer, and Ekiyor has the right blend of smarts and nastiness you look for when considering a freshman for early playing time on Alabama’s offensive line.
Alabama identified Ekiyor as a top target at the start of 2017 and continued to chip away at his commitment to Michigan. He ended up flipping to the Tide in October.

Which 2018 signee has biggest defensive role next season?
This one is very easy to answer. That’s going to be the nation’s No. 1 overall junior college player and former LSU cornerback Saivion Smith. Nick Saban complimented Smith during his news conference on Wednesday.
“I think anytime you get a guy that’s played in major college football games before, probably knows a little more about what it takes, probably has a little more maturity,” Saban said.
“I think that’s always probably a positive for a guy, in terms of his readiness to come in and play. We’re excited he’s here and excited to have the opportunity to work with him even in this time, which is a little more difficult now that we’re working on an opponent. But he’s still out there getting reps, and we’re still trying to coach him and teach him what he needs to know to make a contribution.”
With Alabama losing starting cornerbacks Anthony Averett and Levi Wallace, nickel cornerback Tony Brown, safety Hootie Jones (and not to mention Minkah Fitzpatrick and Ronnie Harrison could declare for the NFL draft) Smith will start in the secondary. He has the ability to play cornerback or safety.
Smith posted 31 tackles and 2 interceptions, including a pick-6 at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College this season. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown and caught 3 passes for 26 yards on offense.

Which current commit will Alabama have to fight to keep?
That would be 4-star linebacker Quay Walker.
SEC Country was notified on Tuesday that Georgia was working hard to push through his school application in order to have the paperwork ready to go on Wednesday so he could sign early. Walker didn’t sign with UGA or any school on Wednesday, but hearing that the Bulldogs were trying to make that happen is definitely something that caught my attention.
Walker told SEC Country before defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt left for Tennessee that he would de-commit from the Tide if the coach left. Shortly after Pruitt was announced as the Vols’ coach, Alabama defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley, Walker’s primary recruiter, had an in-home visit with the Under Armour All-American. Walker then told SEC Country that he was locked in with the Tide.
It’s clear that Walker is still looking around. Georgia and Auburn are working hard to get him to change his mind.

Biggest early signing period disappointment for Alabama?
Losing 4-star tight end Dominick Wood-Anderson to Tennessee.
Wood-Anderson had been a major target for the Crimson Tide for several months. Saban really wanted to add Wood-Anderson. He even continued to recruit him after he essentially lied to him the day he committed to Texas in August. Wood-Anderson told Saban that morning that he was going to announce his commitment to Alabama only to choose Texas hours later.
Fast forward to the first day of the early signing period and Alabama once again felt confident. Then, of course, something changed. He was expected to announce his commitment at 11 a.m. ET during the local news in San Diego. He didn’t. It took more than six hours from then for Wood-Anderson to announce he had signed with Tennessee.
I know how badly Alabama wanted him, but having covered his recruitment the last few months, I do not know how he would have meshed personality-wise with how the Tide operate. Wood-Anderson, who made at least four silent commitments and said he would sign with Tennessee if he got more than 20,000 Twitter followers, has some immaturity about him. So while he is a special talent, I don’t know if he would have fit in well at Alabama.

Biggest uncommitted target left on Alabama’s board?
That would be 5-star cornerback Tyson Campbell.
There’s no doubt about it now: Campbell is a must-get for the Tide. Saban said he wants to add five defensive backs in this class, and Alabama only has three signed. The Tide lost 4-star prospect Nadab Joseph on Wednesday when he flipped and signed with Georgia. Alabama didn’t send him a letter of intent for fear of him not being able to qualify.
Campbell has been the team’s No. 1 target at cornerback all year. He’s expected to take an official visit to Tuscaloosa next month.

Most likely to commit next to Alabama?
Bobby Brown, a 4-star defensive tackle from Lamar High School (Arlington, Texas), is the likeliest candidate here.
Brown de-committed from Texas A&M late Wednesday night after committing to the Aggies over Alabama in October. Alabama was the longtime favorite to land Brown prior to him choosing Texas A&M. Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi has been putting in work these last few weeks. He’s been at Brown’s home three times and has seemingly got his mother on board with the idea of him potentially choosing Alabama.
It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Brown go ahead and sign by the end of the early signing period. I think that the Crimson Tide are the favorites here.

Hamm said that Bobby Brown is a character risk and they dodged a bullet.
Being a character risk would be a positive attribute for Jimbo if he runs TAMU anything like he ran FSU.
