Several schools return to action this week, including Hoover, Homewood, Spain Park and Minor, after getting a midseason break last week.
How will they respond to the week off?
Let’s look at 10 of the best games in metro Birmingham this week, with a little analysis, followed by picks of the remaining games on the Week 5 schedule:
1) Jackson-Olin (4-1 overall, 1-1 in Class 6A, Region 5) at Ramsay (3-2, 3-0)
Jackson-Olin should be motivated to prove it’s the best team from Birmingham City Schools in this Thursday night showdown. Jackson-Olin 23-21
2) Hewitt-Trussville (5-0 overall, 3-0 in Class 7A, Region 4) at Bob Jones (4-2, 3-0)
Hewitt-Trussville should get its biggest test of the season so far, complete with a long bus ride. Won’t matter. Hewitt-Trussville 38-21
3) Mountain Brook (3-2 overall, 1-2 in Class 7A, Region 3) at Tuscaloosa County (1-5, 0-3)
Mountain Brook had a week off to recover after beating Spain Park 51-50 in overtime. The Spartans won’t need overtime this week. Mountain Brook 32-17
4) Thompson (5-0 overall, 3-0 in Class 7A, Region 3) at Vestavia Hills (3-2, 2-1)
Vestavia Hills’ defense already had two shutouts, but they haven’t seen anything like Taulia Tagovailoa and Co. yet this season. Thompson 35-14
5) Gardendale (4-2 overall, 2-0 on in Class 6A, Region 6) at Clay-Chalkville (5-1, 2-1)
Gardendale coach Matt Plunkett said in the preseason it’s time for the Rockets to in a region title, and this is the kind of game they have to win to do it. Close, but no. Clay-Chalkville 34-28
6) Parker (1-3 overall, 1-2 in Class 6A, Region 6) at Shades Valley (3-2, 1-1)
Expect Shades Valley QB Desmond Trotter to bounce back from last week’s heart-breaking loss to Pinson Valley and have a big game. Huge. Bigly huge. Shades Valley 31-21
7) St. Clair County (4-1 overall, 3-0 in Class 5A, Region 5) at Briarwood Christian (5-0, 3-0)
This game could determine the Class 5A, Region 5 championship, and Briarwood Christian coach Fred Yancey knows how to win these games. Briarwood Christian 31-19
8) Carver-Birmingham (4-1 overall, 1-1 in Class 6A, Region 6) at Minor (4-1, 1-1)
Minor didn’t play last week, and that rest should give the Tenacious Tigers an advantage. Minor 41-27
9) J.B. Pennington (5-1 overall, 3-0 in Class 3A, Region 6) at Fultondale (5-0, 2-0)
The winner will likely win the Class 3A, Region 6 championship, and Fultondale seems like a hungry team. Maybe even hangry. Fultondale 34-14
10) Moody (2-3 overall, 0-3 in Class 6A, Region 5) at Woodlawn (0-5, 0-3)
In the boldest pick of the season so far, I’ll take take Woodlawn to end its nine-game losing skid. Woodlawn 34-32

Hoover 38, Oak Mountain 13
Spain Park 27, Huffman 21

King Mwikuta still has Alabama on top
LAGRANGE, Ga. — Alabama has led for several months for King Mwikuta, a 2019 4-star linebacker out of Troup County. Nothing has changed on that front.
“Alabama has a big lead for me,” Mwikuta told SEC Country. “I’ll go ahead and say that. Georgia is No. 2.”
Mwikuta returned “home” this past Saturday for Alabama’s game against Ole Miss. The nation’s No. 5 outside linebacker received lots of attention from staff members this past weekend. Almost every Crimson Tide assistant and grad assistant came up to say hello to Mwikuta.
Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi was at Troup County on Friday night to watch Mwikuta play against Sandy Creek. Mwikuta was in the backfield all night and scooped up a fumble. It’s his relationship with Lupoi that has Alabama on top for him.
“That’s pops right there,” Mwikuta said. “That’s daddy. He’s family. When I first met him, I was in the ninth grade. I went to Alabama for a camp. It was just an instant connection with him. Him, coach [Nick] Saban and [Derrick Ansley] are all like family to me. I look up to those guys.”
Not only does he look up to those Alabama coaches but also Georgia coach Kirby Smart and linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer. Mwikuta said he has been impressed with UGA’s hot start but needs to see how the Bulldogs look as the season continues to seriously consider switching up his favorite schools.
“A lot of teams have gotten off to a good start,” Mwikuta said. “I need to see if they make it to the playoffs and the SEC championship before I talk about their season. I don’t know if that’s going to happen yet. If they do, I’ll start looking at them more. In my class, I know we got a few commitments at Georgia. We’ll see how they turn out.”
But while Mwikuta still has his eye on UGA, the 6-foot-4, 232-pound prospect has already thought about committing to Alabama. He hasn’t gotten that feeling at Georgia yet. That’s important because he’s going to make his commitment in two months.
“I’ll go ahead and say this: I am setting up my commitment for Dec. 15,” Mwikuta said. “I’m not going to tell you where I’m going just yet, but I’m setting it up for that date. That’s my birthday so put it on your calendar.”
Which schools will be finalists?
Mwikuta said Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Florida State and Miami are going to be his finalists when he makes his decision. As of this time, it would be a total surprise if he didn’t commit to the Crimson Tide when he makes his decision. If the Crimson Tide land him, they would land a prospect with one of the most infectious personalities in the 2019 class. He will certainly be a leader for whichever school lands him.

More on Kelvin Joseph’s de-commtiment from LSU
Kelvin Joseph, a 4-star cornerback from Scotlandville Magnet High School (Baton Rouge, La.), de-committed from LSU after the Tigers’ loss to Troy on Saturday night.
Joseph told SEC Country over the summer that he was going to be paying close attention to how LSU and Alabama played this season. The Tigers have started 3-2 with two bad losses, while Alabama is undefeated and has outscored its last two opponents, 125-3.
Joseph, who’s being recruited by Alabama as a safety, has said before that he was close to flipping to the Crimson Tide. He took numerous visits to Tuscaloosa last summer and it appeared a flip was imminent. While he hasn’t visited Tuscaloosa this season, he is expected to visit in the near future. He was expected to be on campus this past weekend but ended up not making it.
The thought around Joseph’s decision to back off his pledge from the Tigers had to do with wanting to take official visits as an uncommitted player. SEC Country was told that some schools didn’t want to bring in Joseph for an official visit if he was committed to LSU.
“I had just been thinking that I needed to give other schools a chance to recruit me,” Joseph explained to SEC Country’s Sam Spiegelman. “A lot of schools felt like they didn’t have a chance to recruit me because I was committed to LSU and I haven’t had a chance to look at anyone.”
LSU remains Joseph’s No. 1 school, he said. That likely won’t remain the case if the Tigers continue to look atrocious on the field. Joseph said he’s going to compare the schools he’s considering to LSU.
“LSU, it’s the hometown school,” Joseph said. “That’s where all my love is at. I have love for them. I’ll be comparing everyone to LSU. I still feel connected to them.”
The Army All-American said he will release a top 3 next Monday and two schools are already locked in — Alabama and LSU. The third school likely will be Florida State after he takes an official visit to Tallahassee this weekend for the Seminoles’ game against Miami. The other schools in the mix to be his third school are Florida, Clemson and Kansas.
He’ll take an official visit to Alabama on Nov. 4 for the Crimson Tide’s game against LSU. That game could decide where Joseph commits. With the way the season is shaping up, Alabama could really beat LSU by five touchdowns, and one would think that would end things between him and the Tigers.
As of now, I still have Joseph outside of my mock signing class. The four defensive backs I have Alabama signing remain the same: Tyson Campbell, Nadab Joseph, Saivion Smith and Jalyn Armour-Davis. Joseph is very close to being added, though.

One of Alabama’s top defensive back targets has reopened his recruitment.
Kelvin Joseph, a 4-star cornerback from Scotlandville Magnet High School (Baton Rouge, La.), has de-committed from LSU after the Tigers’ loss to Troy on Saturday night.
“My love for the school and admiration for the coaching staff has not changed,” Joseph wrote on Twitter. “Though they remain my No. 1 option, I have decided to explore the other opportunities available to me.”
Joseph told SEC Country over the summer that he was going to be paying close attention to how LSU and Alabama played this season. The Tigers have started 3-2 with two bad losses while Alabama is undefeated and has outscored its last two opponents 125-3.

Alabama surely is the school to watch moving forward for Joseph, but a return to LSU shouldn’t be ruled out because he lives in Baton Rouge and has a strong relationship with the Tigers coaching staff.

Kelvin Joseph talks de-commitment
BATON ROUGE, La. — Without question, there have been highs and lows in Kelvin Joseph’s recruitment since he gave his verbal commitment to LSU 20 months ago. Yet, with National Signing Day within striking distance, his de-commitment seemingly came out of left field.
Several schools have attempted to flip the 4-star defensive back since he first committed to the hometown Tigers in February 2016. Until Monday, none have been successful.
What changed? According to the U.S. Army All-American, nothing.
“I had just been thinking that I needed to give other schools a chance to recruit me,” Joseph explained to SEC Country. “A lot of schools felt like they didn’t have a chance to recruit me because I was committed to LSU and I haven’t had a chance to look at anyone.”
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound defensive back out of Scotlandville (La.) High School made the split decision to de-commit from LSU on Monday in the aftermath of LSU’s loss to Troy. Joseph was in Baton Rouge instead of making the visit to Alabama for the Tide’s home game against Ole Miss.
While the loss was disappointing, Joseph is putting an emphasis on how the Tigers finish out the 2017 season. He’ll be keeping close tabs on LSU and the other schools he’s considering to determine where he fits in best.
“I felt like today [Monday] was the right time,” he said. “That loss — it wasn’t expected. I’m just looking at everybody’s programs and how they’re going and how the coaches are. If it doesn’t compare up, then …”
Why LSU remains on top
Joseph will be comparing Alabama, Florida State, Clemson, Florida, Kansas and some other programs to LSU. Purposefully.
The Tigers remain the leading school for Louisiana’s top-ranked defensive back. The only change — for now — is that he’ll navigate through the remaining five months of the 2018 recruiting cycle uncommitted.
“LSU, it’s the hometown school,” Joseph explained. “That’s where all my love is at. I have love for them. I’ll be comparing everyone to LSU. I still feel connected to them.”
Before Joseph went public with his de-commitment, he first contacted LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, who has been his primary recruiter the past two-plus years.
Raymond, as expected, was displeased with Joseph’s decision. He has deterred the All-American from de-committing a handful of times over the past few years but understood Joseph’s mindset on this occasion. He left the priority target with one message to think about during the remaining five months.
“He didn’t like it, but I told him that [LSU] was still my top school,” Joseph said. “He said he’s going to recruit me how he was and he said nothing was going to change.”
Joseph is expected to officially visit Florida State this weekend for the Miami game. He’ll return to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for an official visit when Alabama hosts LSU on Nov. 4.
What does LSU have to do to remain in front?
“I’d say finish the season strong … you know, dominate,” Joseph said. “I can’t just judge them on how they’re playing right now. I’m going to visit other schools to see how everything is, but it’s a possibility — a strong possibility — that I commit back to LSU.”
Joseph will officially announce his commitment to either LSU or another program on National Signing Day in February.
Until then, the 4-star defensive back’s next move will be to release a final 3 next Monday in the aftermath of his official visit to Florida State. Two of the spots in that top 3 are already occupied. The third is up for grabs between Florida, Florida State, Kansas and Clemson, among others.
“It’s LSU, Alabama and the last one is still a race,” Joseph said.

Auburn’s recruiting has, in a sense, reached a standstill.
The coaching staff is still working effortlessly to recruit top talent in the 2018, 2019 and 2020 classes, but nothing has really happened since the Tigers secured a commitment from Asa Martin in August. Commitments, as is usually the case during the season, have been put on the back burner.
Taking a look at last month’s recruiting to-do list, the Tigers left most of those tasks unfinished. They were:
1. Secure a commitment from top pass rusher: Richard Jibunor was the likely choice, but his visit to Florida pushed everything back. This could be another need for October.
2. Get into the mix for a highly-rated, off-the-radar target: This (sort of) happened. The Tigers have always been in the mix for Alabama commit Quay Walker, but a flip possibility seems to be more real than ever, so that’s close enough.
3. Host 5-star quarterback Justin Fields on two visits: I probably should’ve waited for one visit to suggest the Tigers could get two. As I reported Sunday, the Tigers are now fully out of the game for Fields.
Auburn only has one home game this month, so the opportunity to make recruiting moves from visit standpoint will be tough to do. But there are a few things the Tiger can accomplish recruiting-wise that will make October a successful month.
Here’s the monthly to-do list.

2. Beat out Florida and Alabama for Coynis Miller
Mark Oct. 14 on your calendars.
Big-time defensive tackle Coynis Miller is set to make his decision between Auburn, Alabama and Florida. Miller calls Florida his public leader, but Auburn and Alabama aren’t going to go away quietly.
The Tigers developed a relationship with Miller long before anyone else. Will Rodney Garner’s connection with Miller pay off when the decision comes down? That’s what Auburn needs to hope for.
Miller is the only Auburn target known to be making a decision in October, so it would be a huge pickup for momentum’s sake.

Slade Bolden, four-star athlete from West Monroe High School in Louisiana, took an official visit to Alabama this weekend. Bolden committed to Alabama after impressing during the summer.
"Bama is just a wonderful place," Bolden said. "They never disappoint. It's always mind blowing every time. I had a wonderful time. They really care about you up there and treat you well. I was very thankful. I had a really good time.
"My parents and I went on the visit. We went right after my game. We got there around 4:00 a.m. It was tough, but we managed. We slept through breakfast. My parents loved it. They loved it when I went for the summer camp. We had a wonderful time. They love the fact I have an opportunity to play there. They know I will be treated really well."
Bolden went in-depth on his weekend in Tuscaloosa.
"We started off the day by going to the academic side of things," he said. "We got some information there. We went to eat at Rama Jama's. You have to eat there of course. We toured the campus a little bit, and went to the President's mansion. That was really cool. I am a history guy. That was a cool experience.
"We then went back to the facility. We did some pre-game stuff. We did a photo shoot. We went through the media stuff. I might go in Communications one day. For right now, I plan on going into Business.
"We watched the team walk through before we ate. It was cool to see all the fans supporting the players. They started playing Sweet Home Alabama. That's the anthem there. It was really cool.
"I had Denzal Devall and a couple of assistants who took me around. I hung out with Mac Jones. He is a really cool guy. The next morning, we went to Coach Saban's house and had breakfast. We saw the lake and his boat. We met with the coaches back at the facility had some lunch and then we went home."
Bolden is one of the best athletes in the South. It's no surprise he enjoyed seeing the Tide's offense go to work against the Rebels.
"The thing I was impressed with the most is how we spread the ball out," Bolden said. "It helps when you put teams away so early, but in the beginning of the game they spread the ball around. I know in this offense coach (Daboll) is getting the ball in a lot of guys hands.
"It's such a great atmosphere. It's real classy there. It's a different atmosphere from other colleges. It's real loud. It's just real classy. That's how West Monroe is, so I really like it."
The time spent at Coach Saban's house on Sunday was eye-opening for Bolden who saw a different side of his future head coach.
"My favorite part was going over to Coach Saban's house," he said. "I loved it. It was a great time. Coach Saban is pretty funny. People think he's mean. He has a good sense of humor. He is a personal guy. He really is. He showed us a good time."
Bolden wasn't the only official visitor in Tuscaloosa. He spent time recruiting a few other top targets.
"I talked to Justin Fields and Emil Ekiyor. I like both of those guys. Tommy (Brown) and I were doing some recruiting ourselves. I know both of them really enjoyed it."
So what position with Bolden play once he arrives in T-Town?
"Coach Locksley talked to me about what they plan on doing with me," he said. "They can motion me in the backfield or put me in the slot. They can find some mis-matches. They have been looking for a guy like that, and they found one. I can do both as far as running or receiving. I can do anything they need me to do."
Bolden expects to return to Alabama for the LSU, game and probably the Tennessee game.
I figured I would just post the entire thing.

Justyn Ross more comfortable with Auburn offense
It was fairly obvious on Saturday who the man of the hour was, at least as far as recruiting is concerned.
Justyn Ross chose to attend Auburn’s game vs. Mississippi State rather than return to Alabama or Clemson. That was by design. He had the opportunity to go to both places, but he wanted to check out Auburn since he hadn’t been in the 2017 football season.
Auburn coaches took note.
Wide receivers coach Kodi Burns spent plenty of pregame time with Ross and his family. Before and after the game, Ross had a little bit of 1-on-1 time with coach Gus Malzahn. Ross recognizes he’s a priority.
“[I wanted to come] because I haven’t been to Auburn yet [this season]. I’ve been to Clemson and Alabama. I just wanted to separate them,” Ross said. “I did [talk to Malzahn]. He’s telling me that they’re pretty low at receivers. He’s telling me how their quarterback situation is great right now.”
Auburn showed Ross attention the night before, too.
Burns attended Ross’ high school game. Ross put on a show. He recorded a long touchdown pass and also returned a punt for a score. Ross was very conscious of Burns’ presence at his high school game.
“It’s real cool having them at the games because it shows how important I am to them for them to come down to see me play,” Ross said.
He always loves Auburn when he’s there, but Ross doesn’t hide his concerns at each of his respective schools. At Auburn, Ross worried early on about the Tigers’ passing game with a new offensive coordinator and new quarterback.
On Saturday, Auburn threw for 267 yards and 2 touchdowns with completions to eight different receivers, including the only wide receiver in the last recruiting cycle, Noah Igbinoghene.
The passing game caught Ross’ attention.
“I feel like they played real good. I feel like the defense did its end. Offense played with its receivers a lot tonight,” Ross said. I feel like they showed me a lot. They’re showing me how much they can throw the ball around, get the receivers in action. Just wanting to see what they can do on the offensive side of the ball. Oh yeah, for sure, [they’re showing me what I want to see].”
There is still plenty of time for Auburn, Alabama and Clemson — the group that has emerged as his top 3 — to make their respective recruiting pitches.
Ross still doesn’t plan on deciding until National Signing Day. He has his official visits to take care of. For now, he only knows for certain that he’ll take officials to those three programs, but no dates are set.
But if Auburn has one advantage, it’s how comfortable Ross’ family is on the Plains.
“How my family adapts to it and how good of a relationship they have,” Ross said.

4-star linebacker Quay Walker
- Instead of visiting Alabama, Quay Walker attended Auburn’s game against Mississippi State instead, despite that not being the original plan.
- He had a chance to hang out with his high school teammate, Markaviest Bryant, after the game.
- Walker is still committed to Alabama, but the level of that commitment is diminishing. Florida, Georgia and Auburn are all real players for Walker, but if Alabama revs up the pressure, the Crimson Tide will be tough to top in the end.

3-star tight end Michael Parker
- The lifelong Alabama fan went so far as to say Auburn is at the top, though he backed off that slightly and said Purdue has made a nice run for him, as well.
- This was Michael Parker’s first game to Auburn as a recruit. He loved the experience. Admittedly, he said it was a “little weird” at first because of his family connection to the Crimson Tide, but the Auburn environment made it pretty easy to get used to.
- Auburn is pushing for a commitment, but the Tigers aren’t pushing “that hard,” Parker said. He’s not in a rush to make a decision, likely waiting to see if Alabama offers.
- If Alabama were to offer, it definitely would make him think, but he wouldn’t go so far as to say it would rule everyone else out. He really likes the relationships he’s built at Auburn.
