Another week, another successful round for the future of Auburn football. Several of Auburn’s top targets excelled in their high school or junior college games last weekend.
Auburn coaches Gus Malzahn and Travis Williams traveled to the Atlanta area to see Tucker play Colquitt County. That game featured the No. 2 team in 7A (Colquitt) and top linebacker target JJ Peterson. It also included the top-ranked 6A team that includes Auburn commit Michael Harris and offensive line target Dylan Wonnum. Colquitt topped Tucker by 14 points.
A few key Auburn commits won’t have their stats posted below. Joey Gatewood’s game on Friday night was suspended due to lightning and will be played Monday night. Shedrick Jackson sat out of his game with a hamstring injury. Richard Jibunor and Quindarious Monday played key roles, but didn’t have much statistical output in narrow defeats. Josh Marsh sat out with a minor knee injury.
Check out the top performances.
I'll post the ones with mutual interest in Alabama

Williams balled out and they still lost by 3. He must be all they've got. Can you imagine the score of that game if he didn't get 233 receiving yards?
I'm really starting to warm on this kid. I feel confident based on the first couple of games that he's getting coverage shaded his way and he's still producing. That's good on him.

ALLEN, Tex. -- Four-star Allen quarterback Grant Tisdale didn’t come out of Allen’s season-opening win against Cedar Hill on Friday night feeling as though he played a complete game.
Although he had 162 yards of total offense and a pair of touchdowns - one through the air and the other on the ground - he was thinking of a first quarter interception and a stagnant second half. Tisdale said that next week at home against Shreveport-Evangel Christian Academy, he expects more out of himself.
“First half, yes, I thought I did well - I had one little mistake - a brain fart,” he said. “The second half, that was unacceptable. No points in the second half - that can’t happen again.”
So far as Tisdale’s recruitment is concerned, the big headline came this summer when he picked up an offer from Ohio State. Now that the calendar turned to September, teams that have yet to offer but have him on their board could add some intrigue to things as the season carries on.
“I got a couple offers on my list that I want to get,” he said. “The QBU school for me, Florida State, is one. Texas is on there, Alabama’s on there, Clemson, those are probably the top schools I want right now.”
IN HIS WORDS
On Alabama
“I really like Alabama,” he said. “I like the tradition, how Nick Saban operates. When Jalen Hurts got there, it got even better. That just showed how they can plug a dual-threat quarterback in their system and win the game. If I got an offer from them, I would be ecstatic, they would jump pretty high on my list.”
On Florida State
“I talked to Coach (Tim) Brewster yesterday when they were allowed to start contacting us,” he said. “He said they were going to start recruiting me. He just said to take care of my business and the rest would take care of itself.”
On Texas
“I talked to Coach (Tim) Beck about our game yesterday,” he said. “I’m probably going to text him later as well, but he said that he’d be in close contact this week or next and see how things go from there.”
RIVALS REACTION
Between the three schools discussed, Texas is the only one with a quarterback already committed in 2019. Should the Longhorns offer him - even with Roschon Johnson already in the fold - Tisdale said the potential of having another quarterback in the same class isn’t a deterrent if he likes the school.
“That’s not really something I think about,” he said. “I’m just looking for the best fit for me and I’m going to have to compete anywhere I go. I’m not afraid of competition.”

Is Bama going to land any recruits anytime soon? I thought there was a bunch of kids that wanted to commit before the season started.

We would have gotten Vernon Jackson if Hurricane Harvey hadn't shown up. We still lead for him, but he wants to announce at his school which doesn't reopen until Monday.

11 - Alabama's active streak of finishing with a top
Alabama has finished with a a top-10 recruiting class for 11 straight years. The Crimson Tide finished second in 2015, fifth in 2010, 10th in 2007 and first in the other eight years Could that streak be broken in 2018?
Alabama only has 10 commitments, which is a low number for the program at this stage, and sits at No. 33 in the Rivals Team Recruiting Rankings. All but one of the current commits is a four-star, so it is more of a numbers thing right now for Alabama. The Crimson Tide are going to add over another dozen recruits to this class, which should give them a chance to keep this streak alive. Plus, most in this business would bet on Nick Saban to get the job done and that impressive win over Florida State could give them a little boost.

Take Two: Is Emory Jones going to flip to Alabama?

STORYLINE
Emory Jones committed to Ohio State more than a year ago but his recruitment is anything but humdrum, especially in the last few months.
The five-star quarterback from Franklin (Ga.) Heard County took a visit to Alabama over the summer and then this past weekend, he was expected to attend the Crimson Tide’s season opener against Florida State in Atlanta.
On top of that, Jones has seemed to develop a strong relationship with new Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.
After Jones’ trip to Tuscaloosa this summer, he and his mom jumped on a conference call with a bunch of Ohio State coaches including Urban Meyer as the Buckeyes tried to keep the five-star quarterback locked up and, kind of, stem the encroachment from Alabama in their star prospect’s recruitment.
More than once, Jones has stated his Ohio State pledge is solid, but Alabama does seem to be making in-roads.
So, will Jones stick with his longstanding Ohio State commitment and turn away from the Crimson Tide as things get even more ramped up? Or is the five-star quarterback preparing to flip to the national power and spurn the Buckeyes in these final months of his recruitment?

First take: MARC GIVLER, BUCKEYEGROVE.COM
“Any time that Alabama is coming after a committed prospect, it is something to take note of and respect. But Jones has continued to recruit hard for Ohio State and has become close with many of his classmates. Ohio State is also the program that Jones grew up dreaming of playing for as he idolized Braxton Miller. While there is no doubt there is something intriguing to him about the Alabama program, it looks highly likely that he will take his talents to Columbus on Signing Day. Jones recently commented that he is on track to sign and enroll early with the Buckeyes.”

Second take: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM
“It seems to be trending that way. He’s had conversations with the Ohio State coaches about it and he’s visited Alabama. The fact is Ohio State is not happy he visited. He was supposed to be in Atlanta for the Alabama-Florida State game. I don’t know which program he would be a better fit. Both programs have quite a few young, talented quarterbacks, so he’s probably going to look at the depth charts and see which ones he feels he can beat out, but it is trending toward Alabama.”

#TwitterTuesday who is a dark horse SEC pick who could possibly beat Alabama?
— Jamie Johnson (@TripleOGJamie) September 4, 2017
It’s obviously very early in the season and a few teams have looked good, but Auburn has the best chance to upset Alabama and unseat the Crimson Tide.
What about LSU? After all, The Tigers dismantled a pretty good BYU team and looked solid offensively and very strong defensively in the process. I just don’t think they can get past Alabama with Danny Etling at quarterback.
I like the fact that Auburn has a well-balanced offense now with Jarrett Stidham. You also have to account for the rivalry factor. You never know what can happen in big-time rivalry games and, if Auburn can navigate the schedule and beat LSU on the road and Georgia at home, the Iron Bowl could be epic.
Personally, I don’t think anyone will touch Alabama in the SEC this season, but give me Auburn if I’m picking a dark horse.

AUBURN, Ala. — Auburn hosted an impressive list of recruits Saturday, especially considering the Week 1 opponent (Georgia Southern) and several other high-profile matchups across the southeast. The Tigers put on an equally impressive showing on the field during its defensive-dominant 41-7 victory in the opener.
Most of the recruits who were expected to attend the game showed up. The only big-time 2018 prospect who couldn’t make it was 4-star wide receiver Seth Williams, but don’t read too much into that. He was planning to come with his coaches and teammates, but the trip ended up getting called off.
Here are the biggest takeaways from the recruiting side of the game Saturday:

4-star DT Coynis Miller
- Coynis Miller spent most of his time during the game with close friend — and newest Auburn commit — Asa Martin. He admitted his friendship with Martin will be a significant help for the Tigers’ chances.
- With that said, Miller said Florida still leads. The environment and the relationship with coaches blew him away on his initial visit.
- It’s not a big gap between Florida and Auburn, his No. 2, Miller said. He said at any moment the Tigers have the ability to jump up into the lead.
- Miller hasn’t planned all of his upcoming visits, but he expects to be at one of Auburn’s next two home games.

Paul Tyson never met his great-grandfather, but on Saturdays in the fall, he could hear his voice. When Paul was four years old, he began going to games at Bryant-Denny Stadium with his father, Marc Tyson.
Even though the Crimson Tide won most of those games, some of the most special moments came before kickoff. That's when the voice of Bear Bryant rings through the stadium, and that's when Marc Tyson would look down at his son and say, "That's Papa."
Almost every college football fan knows Paul William Bryant, better known as Bear, as the most accomplished coach in college football history. When he retired from coaching in 1982, he held the record for wins (323), and he still holds the record for national championships (six).
At the University of Alabama, allegiance to Bear goes beyond the field that's named in part after him. On campus, you can find Paul W. Bryant Museum, Paul W. Bryant Hall and Paul W. Bryant Drive. On your way into the stadium on those fall Saturdays, you can see hordes of fans still wearing his signature houndstooth.
In a few years, you might even see Bear's own flesh and blood take the field. Paul Tyson, now 16, is a 3-star junior quarterback at Hewitt-Trussville (Alabama) High. It should be no surprise that among the schools he's interested in is Alabama.
For the Tysons, as for many people in the South, college football is about family. Marc was Bear's only grandson, and that afforded him some special privileges. He would sit on the sidelines for home games, and when those games finished, he'd find his grandfather, grab his hand and walk off the field with him.
With his own children—he has three daughters and Paul, the baby of the family—he cherished Saturdays cheering for the team his grandfather built and for so long defined.
"It was just kind of a way of life for us going to football games," Marc says. "It's something our family has always done together. And it's comforting for me to go to the games. They have pictures of my grandfather, and you can hear his voice. It keeps his memory alive. It's almost like he's not gone."
Paul was born to be an athlete, and he was raised that way, too. He says his dad started playing catch with him in his crib. In his childhood home, Paul had a batting cage and a hoop outside with a painted three-point line.
Until about the sixth grade, Marc coached him in basketball, baseball and football. By middle school, he'd settled in as a starting shortstop and quarterback. Although he grew up with plenty of Alabama memorabilia around the house, Paul always preferred pro gear. His favorites were his Tom Brady and Philip Rivers jerseys, and he wears Rivers' No. 17 for his high school now.
At Bryant-Denny Stadium, he became a mini-celebrity—not only because of his heritage, but because of his proclivity for ending up on the jumbotron. The family's season tickets are in Row 1 on the south end zone, right in front of where one of the cameramen stands. One Saturday, Marc says, Paul got on the big screen a dozen times.
Most people let the Tysons enjoy the games in peace, but occasionally a fan will stop Marc for a handshake or a picture. When he was nine, Paul came to appreciate fully the passion of Alabama fans.
It was November 2009, and undefeated No. 3 Alabama was trailing one-loss No. 9 LSU, 15-13, at the beginning of the fourth quarter. An older man who was seated near the Tysons and who knew the family history bent over and kissed Paul on the top of the head for good luck. "I was a little creeped out," Paul jokes.
But moments later, Julio Jones caught a screen pass and streaked to the end zone to give Alabama a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
He also remembers harder moments, like the following season when he and his father watched Alabama lose to LSU in Death Valley. "We were sitting in the LSU section," Marc says, "and Paul was a little teary-eyed from the loss. And some of the fans heckled him a little bit. But you know what? He may end up going back there and having a good game against them."
At 6'4" and 210 pounds, Paul is a prototypical pro-style quarterback. He spent his freshman and sophomore years at Mountain Brook High School playing baseball and football, but he stopped playing baseball this year to focus on football. He transferred to Hewitt-Trussville after his family moved closer to his father's work.
Josh Floyd, the head coach at Hewitt-Trussville, knew he had scored a potential starting quarterback right away.
"I could tell he was a big kid just by looking at him," Floyd says. "But then he started throwing the ball around, and you could see what type of talent he is. He has a big-time arm. He can make every type of throw you need to make. It's gonna be fun to call plays for him."
At first, Floyd wasn't aware of Paul's family history. When he found out, through Marc, he was elated because he loves football history and because both he and Bear Bryant are from Arkansas originally.
"It's been so fun to hear some stories about Bear," Floyd says. "But you would never know anything unless you directly asked Paul about it. He's a pretty humble kid."
On Friday, in his first career varsity start in an official game, he went 19-of-24 for 285 yards with four touchdowns in a 65-28 win over Callaway (Miss.).
With a roster loaded with Division I talent, Hewitt-Trussville could be in contention for a state championship at the end of the year. Paul, for his part, is already an excellent spokesman for the team.
Asked about his individual goals for the season, he responded: "Really, I'm just trying to do what's best for our team. We're trying to win a state championship. I don't worry about any of that other stuff."
Although they've been staples in the stands at Bryant-Denny for almost two decades, the Tyson boys will be hitting the road this fall and may only end up seeing one or two Alabama games.
This weekend they visited Duke and North Carolina State, and they have trips to Kentucky, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee planned. Even though many outside the family believe Paul will eventually commit to Alabama, he and Marc insist it isn’t so.
"It would definitely be awesome to play there," Paul says. "I've watched so many games there, and playing on the same field would be really cool. But no one has put any pressure on me to play there. I want to go to the best place for me. I want to go somewhere I can win a national championship and where I'm the school's No. 1 guy."
