I think the slow start on this class is mainly due to the loss of several highly touted recruiters. We are having to establish new relationships with kids leading to a gap in the recruiting calendar. Saban has had to replace one or two recruiters at a time he's never had this many leave at once. I think it's challenging him with the turnover, temporarily.

We offered a 3-star DT out of Brookhaven, MS. He plays for the same high school as Jimmy Johns.

We always do this time of the year. Then, after we offer, a ton of other schools do as well, and they turn into 4 stars. We have three of the best talent evaluators in football right now with Saban, Pruitt, and Ed Marynowicz (who, now that he's back, should find some gems). And based on Belichick's comments on Daboll's evaluation prowess in the Patriots' drafts, I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes another.

Doesn't Pannunzio belong on that list too?

Alabama in the final five for Samuel

Asante Samuel, Jr. is one of the nation’s most coveted cornerbacks in the country, and Alabama will be one of the final schools he chooses from on June 2.

Samuel, a 4-star prospect from St. Thomas Aquinas High School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), announced on Wednesday night that along with Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Miami and Ohio State will be the schools he’ll select from.

“You know why Alabama. I mean, Alabama is Alabama. You can’t deny Alabama,” Samuel told Rivals. “They are going to keep being Alabama. They’re always in the hunt and they produce all that talent every single year.”

Florida State is considered the favorite for Samuel at this time. He has recently said in interviews that the Seminoles are the leader.

Since I started covering Alabama recruiting in November of 2015, I can’t recall Samuel ever visiting Tuscaloosa. That doesn’t bode well for the Crimson Tide’s chances. Plus, Samuel is only 5-foot-9 and one-half. The Crimson Tide usually don’t recruit defensive backs at his size. Mario Cristobal was Samuel’s primary recruiter before Joe Pannunzio took over that role. It’s hard to build a strong relationship when you’ve been on the job for less than a month.

I don’t expect Samuel to choose Alabama this summer barring a major, surprising development.

Samuel is the son of former Patriots, Eagles and Falcons cornerback Asante Samuel. Samuel finished his career with 51 interceptions, six touchdowns, four Pro Bowls and two Super Bowl rings with New England.

Tide still in the mix for state’s top defender

Jalyn Armour-Davis, the state’s top-rated defensive prospect, raised some eyebrows when he released his top six schools because he didn’t include Alabama on that list. It’s rare when one of the state’s top prospects just doesn’t consider the Crimson Tide.

We haven’t heard from Armour-Davis, a 4-star cornerback, who made that list on Feb. 28, because his coach at St. Pauls Episcopal High School (Mobile, Ala.) told him to not speak to the media. He told SEC Country on Wednesday night that despite Alabama not making that initial cut, he’s still thinking about the Tide.

“Bama is still in the mix,” Armour-Davis said. “I just realize my opportunity.”

That opportunity is Alabama not signing any cornerbacks in the Class of 2017. Not only that, but Minkah Fitzpatrick is likely going to declare for the NFL draft after this season and Anthony Averett will have used up all of his eligibility.

Cornerback is arguably the biggest need for Alabama in the Class of 2018 because of those reasons. Armour-Davis did hear from the Crimson Tide after he released his top schools list and was told that he remains a top priority for the team in this recruiting cycle.

The 6-foot, 160-pound prospect is expected to make a commitment before his senior season. Alabama needs to get him back on campus before then because Auburn and Florida State are considered the favorites here.

New QB offer out

Alabama is still in search for a quarterback in the Class of 2018, and the Crimson Tide have targeted a new signal-caller.

Dakereon Joyner, a 4-star prospect from Fort Dorchester High School (North Charleston, S.C.), is the latest quarterback to get an offer from the Crimson Tide. Joyner is a dual-threat prospect, and he becomes the third dual-threat quarterback to get offered since Brian Daboll became Alabama’s offensive coordinator.

Nick Saban spoke with the media on Wednesday and offered up some hints as to how he’s planning on running the offense moving forward.

“Brian’s got a lot of experience,” Saban said. “He’s coached 11 years with the Patriots, spent six years as an NFL offensive coordinator, coached with us at Michigan State. I think he’s got a lot of knowledge and experience in the pro game as well as being a very bright guy that can learn some of the things that we’ve done here relative to the spread and do what our players can do here.”

I wrote on Wednesday that the Tide won’t likely know who its quarterback will be until at least mid-April, which is when the evaluation period begins. That’s when coaches are free to travel to prospects’ schools and see them practice. Alabama will have its quarterback camp in the beginning of June.

Joyner will make his commitment known on June 18. As of now, South Carolina is considered the favorite for Joyner.

You think any of these QBs that have been offered could commit today and Bama take it?

I asked Hank South who was at the top of the QB board yesterday and he said Dorian Thompson-Robinson, Justin Fields (my personal favorite) and Trevor Lawrence top the list.

He also said if Alabama really wanted Jack Tuttle he thinks they have a good shot at flipping him from Utah.

He's considered a good evaluator according to a few folks, yes.

The state of Alabama doesn't produce many great QBs. And in an era of unprecedented recruiting success Alabama will have missed on Jameis Winston and Jack West. Obviously it remains to be seen how West develops.

I know there's more in the details for both guys. But just an observation.

Love scates!! Another fav. I actually like seth Williams better than ross. He catches and runs angry. Ross seams to fall as soon as he's touched.maybe he has better highlights he rated high very early. But yeah scates another get. We probably only taking 2 this year, with hall last year.
