RAYMOND, Miss. — Several of the top prospects in the Southeast gathered at Hinds Community College for the Varsity Preps Elite camp on Saturday to compete in front of regional scouts and the media to distinguish themselves as elite prospects in the 2018 and 2019 classes.
Recruits from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee were all in attendance, including prospects that will likely play in the SEC next fall and beyond.
Here are the top performers from the Varsity Preps Elite camp:

Slade Bolden, 3-star ATH
Bolden is a true athletic in every sense of the word. The 3-star prospect from West Monroe (La.) High School worked out as a slot receiver, but will also take snaps out of the backfield next fall.
The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder made some truly athletic grabs on Saturday and really showed out when he was playing in the slot. There, he dominated against both safeties and linebackers, and that continued in 1-on-1s.
Bolden recently camped at LSU and mentioned he was close to a decision after that. He will visit Alabama and TCU before making a decision before the end of the month.

Brandon Turnage, 4-star ATH
The Class of 2019 standout is already a top-150 prospect in the recruiting cycle. Turnage worked out at cornerback on Saturday and proved that he could certainly be a star at that position in the SEC.
Turnage, at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, possesses great strength for a cornerback and incredible athleticism. He was easily the top defensive back overall at the camp and the only prospect capable of going toe-to-toe with the top receivers on hand.
LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss are three SEC schools to keep tabs on with Turnage, who is nowhere close to making a decision. Turnage has made multiple visits to Baton Rouge since earning an offer last December, but Ole Miss and Mississippi State have some hometown pull with the 4-star athlete.

Maurice Robinson, 3-star QB/ATH
Easily the most impressive quarterback on hand, Robinson may or may not be playing behind center at the next level. One thing for sure: he certainly has the arm and the mental makeup to do so, if he chooses.
LSU and Alabama are two schools that have offered Robinson, who throws with great anticipation. However, at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, Robinson will likely be playing wide receiver or defensive back for a school in 2018, and he possesses the tremendous athleticism to eventually make that transition.
The Tigers were out in front for Robinson early on in his recruitment, but if Robinson wants to play quarterback then LSU or Alabama may not be his top options. Whether the 3-star prospect can convince those schools otherwise remains the question. If he finds comfortable in switching positions, consider Alabama as a team to watch.

James Williams, 3-star DE
Williams recently camped at LSU, and whatever techniques he picked up from working with Pete Jenkins and Ed Orgeron certainly translated to Saturday’s camp in Mississippi.
The 3-star defensive end was a mismatch for all of the offensive tackles attempting to slow him down. He has an ideal combination of both size and speed, and was easily the top pass rusher in attendance at the elite camp.
LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss are certainly three SEC schools to watch for the strong-side defensive end. Camping at LSU left an impression of Williams, but Karl Dunbar is making an impact on the 3-star prospect. It’s also hard to rule out Ole Miss or Mississippi State and the home-state pull.

Since it's a slow night. Here's the real Wonder Woman

Is it just me, or does this guy look exactly like Blake Barnett?

Slade Bolden isn't coming here. Chris Kirschner basically confirmed that today when he said we'd be just another "hat on the table". He posted that on twitter

Bolden is probably TCU bound. They are hitting Louisiana hard.

The real one actually looks nothing like her.

I swear, no team has bigger homer mods than Ohio State. I've read practically every article written about this year's Opening and no one has said a word about Jaiden Woodbey as being a top performer, yet he was the best Safety Jeremy Birmingham saw at the event?
I've noticed that too. They homer it up with the best of them. Even the Barn has a fairly impartial mod (niebuhr), and I never thought I would live to see that day.

There were 19 total linebackers who made The Opening and almost a third were from the West.
We even felt 2-3 more west coast 'backers could have made the event so it definitely goes without saying this year's crop of linebackers is as strong as we've seen in the last five years. The six players who did make it to Beaverton were all very good and probably would rank among the top 10 'backers in attendance.

Palaie Gaoteote, Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman
Gaoteote is one of the most versatile linebackers in the country and had one of the best junior seasons for a 'backer we've ever seen. He does everything well and had a very good week in Oregon. He impressed in the RB-LB 'cat and mouse' or make you miss drills, and was fluid and athletic during 7v7 play.
The USC commit is fluid in space, is comfortably dropping in coverage and shows very good closing speed as well. He's an extremely physical player and has a nice edge to his game yet always looks under control. He may take official visits and mentioned Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon and UCLA as potential destinations but it will be very tough to flip him from USC.

Brandon Kaho, Reno (Nev.)
Kaho really flashed at several times in Oregon and is a great looking prospect. He opened a lot of eyes with a dominant MVP showing at the final Opening Regional camp in Oakland where he earned his invite to the finals and quickly showed he belonged among the nation's best in Beaverton. Kaho has the size and athleticism to play inside or outside backer in college.
He's quick enough to play on the weakside where he can run around and make plays in space but has the toughness and physicality to project as a run stuffer as well. He has a great frame and is only scratching the surface of how good he'll be in a few years. He's a longtime BYU commit but he'll visit Alabama later this month and Washington is making a big push as well.
BOL mentioned Kaho a few days ago. They said he is coming for the Champions Cookout and if he gets an offer he could flip.
He plays LB, QB, RB and returns kicks for his high school team. I'll post his profile and highlights in a minute.

Solomon Tuliaupupu, Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei
'Solo' had a great tournament and was among the top defensive players in the event, regardless of position. Like we mentioned with Robertson, Tuliaupupu was in tremendous shape and looked leaner and more athletic then we've seen this off-season. He was among the standouts in the 'cat and mouse' drills with the running backs and drew a lot of praise for his ability to move so easily for a bigger 'backer.
He made a lot of plays in 7v7 action as well. Tuliaupupu plays a physical game in every setting including 7v7. He's a collision player who broke up several passes with a well timed thud and showed he can run with tight ends and has really improved his speed and athleticism. Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, USC and Washington are all involved with Tuliaupupu.

Four offensive linemen and just one defensive lineman made it to Beaverton, Oregon for The Opening Finals this year.
In contrast, six defensive linemen made it from the West a year ago but those who did earn the Golden Ticket represented themselves well.

Penei Sewell, St. George (Utah) Desert Hills
Sewell had a tremendous week and was one of the five best offensive lineman in the event in our eyes. Sewell was strong from start to finish moving from tackle to guard and showing tremendous potential as an interior lineman. He was hurt on the final day of the event and had to shut things down but looked good to make the final 5v5 best on best before the injury.
Sewell is a massive kid but moves well for a big man. We've seen him mostly at tackle this spring and summer but really liked him at guard after seeing him in Beaverton. With his size and strength, he projects as a road grader as a run blocker but has those tackle feet to be a very effective pass protector. Alabama, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, UCLA and USC top his list.

quote:
Cameron Latu, Salt Lake City (Utah) Olympus
Latu saved his best for last and was one of our favorite defensive lineman on the final workout on Monday. He looked more decisive getting off the ball, was strong at the point of attack and was able to push the opposing tackles he went up against five yards in the backfield. He was quicker off the edge and won every rep we saw.
Latu has all the physical tools to be a dominant player in college. He has a great frame, prototype for a defensive end, is a naturally physical player and once he refines his technique, he'll take his game to another level. Alabama, Nebraska, USC, Utah and Washington round out Latu's current top five.
