4. Keenan Allen, 2010 -- Allen, a talented wide receiver from North Carolina, was originally committed to Alabama, but reportedly de-committed after the Crimson Tide wouldn't also offer a scholarship to his quarterback brother Zach Maynard. Allen and Maynard wound up at California, and Allen is now in the NFL. It's admirable that Alabama wasn't interested in a package deal involving a lesser player, but was Maynard any worse than some of the quarterbacks Alabama signed in that era?

5. Jameis Winston, 2012 -- It's unlikely Winston would have beaten out AJ McCarron in 2013, the year he won the Heisman Trophy and led Florida State to the BCS national championship as a redshirt freshman (and also the year Alabama lost the "Kick Six" game to Auburn). However, he'd have been in line to start the following year, when the Crimson Tide lost to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff. Alabama has done just fine without Winston, but it still has to be galling when you miss out on a potential all-time great from your home state.

1. Philip Rivers, 2000 -- Rivers' father has said Auburn recruited his son hard out of Athens High School, but seemed set with Mississippi quarterback Jason Campbell in the same recruiting class. Rivers went on to re-write the record book at North Carolina State, and has had a fine NFL career. Campbell led Auburn to an undefeated season as a senior in 2004, but if Rivers were around the previous season, would JetGate have ever happened?

2. Cyrus Kouandjio, 2011 -- Kouandjio was the top offensive tackle in his recruiting class, and everyone assumed he'd join older brother Arie at Alabama. That's why it was such a shocker when he committed to Auburn on National Signing Day. However, he never signed his letter of intent, and less than a week later signed with Alabama following several days of prayer and consultation with his family. He became an All-American for the Crimson Tide, starting on a national championship team.

3. T.J. Yeldon, 2012 -- Yeldon's flip from Auburn to Alabama is especially bitter for Tigers fans, given that it occurred on the eve of the NCAA's December dead period, during which coaches can have no contact with recruits. With Yeldon set to enroll in January, his late change of heart effectively ended his recruitment. Yeldon had an excellent career at Alabama (scoring four touchdowns in three games against Auburn), and is now in the NFL.

4. Reuben Foster, 2013 -- A player from Auburn High School who has an Auburn logo tattooed on his arm has to sign with the Tigers, right? I mean, right? Wrong. Foster was committed to Alabama for two years before flipping to Auburn the following summer (and getting that tattoo), but then de-committed and signed with the Crimson Tide in February. He went on to be an All-American and Butkus Award winner at Alabama, and was recently a first-round NFL draft pick. He eventually turned the controversial tattoo into a tribute to his cousin Ladarious Phillips, an Auburn player who was murdered in 2012.

5. Rashaan Evans, 2014 -- Like Foster, Evans was a star linebacker at Auburn High School who seemed destined to play for the Tigers in college. Unlike Foster, Evans' family had strong direct ties to Auburn, with his father Alan having been a running back for the Tigers in the early 1980s (incidentally, Alan Evans was rated ahead of Bo Jackson in the 1982 recruiting class). But Rashaan Evans chose Alabama, where he will be a senior this season and likely a key figure for the Crimson Tide defense. Evans' family felt the backlash of his "betrayal," with Alan Evans' successful convenience store reportedly suffering a severe dip in business after Rashaan signed with Alabama (the family eventually sold the store).

Steve Wiltfong on Ford:
quote:
Luke Ford is a unique TE prospect. 6-6, 250, moves extremely well. I like Alabama here with Georgia pushing.

Luke Ford has that perfect tight end body. Tall and with length but also big enough to move in line and smash people.

Luke Ford showing exceptional body control - made a nice over the shoulder catch.

TE Luke Ford hs some quick to him out of the break for a big guy.

Luke Ford is really someone who jumps out at you as a tight end in this class. He's got more room to fill out his frame and already looks the part of one of the more physically ready TEs in the class. And he's shown some good hands today. He will probably keep pushing up the TE rankings.

Ford also talked up LSU after his recent visit but I think with Sheffer in as an H Back and Glenn Beal being pressed at TE, the Tigers may wind up going elsewhere. Though Ford did say he's going somewhere that uses TEs a lot, bottom line.

Shea Dixon responded to a question about Justyn Ross:
quote:
I'm assuming Justyn Ross didn't make it. Haven't seen any mods post about him.
He's here working out this morning. Big kid. He was running reps with Terrace Marshall earlier today. I'll keep an eye on him this weekend. I'm tracking WRs for 7-on-7 games.
