KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Defensive linemen Greg Emerson came into Orange Carpet Day as Tennessee’s No. 1 priority for the Class of 2018, and he remains in that spot.
Emerson says he plans to hold off on committing until either Dec. 11 or 17.
Do Tennessee fans need to be worried about a date so far off in the future?
Probably not.
He called Tennessee “home” on Saturday and got along great with the other commitments. He and 5-star tackle Cade Mays were joking around with each other at the end of the day.
Emerson, from Jackson, Tenn., would represent the third in-state defensive line commit this class, joining Brant Lawless and D’Andre Litaker. All three rank as 4-star prospects, per 247Sports’ composite rankings, and top-10 players in Tennessee.
Wide receiver commit Alontae Taylor named the trio the “Fab 3.” If Tennessee signs all three, the future of the defensive line appears bright.
From his highlights, the 6-foot-3, 296-pound prospect shows tremendous balance and continues tracking the ball wherever it goes. He plays defensive end in high school but might be more of a disruptive force on the inside in college.
No pressure
For Tennessee, it seems to be more of a matter of when, not if, Emerson will commit to the Vols.
Vols coach Butch Jones seems content to wait until December for the decision, as well. For good reason, too. Emerson could be a special player.
With the Vols in a leading position, Emerson will continue to get no pressure from the coaching staff for a commitment.

BATON ROUGE, La. — LSU’s annual 7-on-7 tournament and offensive-defensive linemen camp certainly made some noise. For one, Ed Orgeron and Co. helped the Tigers nab commitments from a trio of in-state prospects, including a pair of 2018 defenders in Dantrieze Scott and Dare Rosenthal. That pushed LSU’s 2018 class up to 18 commitments, good for the No. 3 class in the country and tops in the SEC. The coaching staff also hosted a bevy of Louisiana’s top recruits, including some of their current commits and priority targets in the 2018, 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes. Here are some notes to pass along from the eventful Saturday in Baton Rouge:

Notable visitors
More than 30 high school teams attended LSU’s 7-on-7 camp on Saturday and several brought along their linemen for the ride. Notable 2018 recruits on hand included six current commits: Kenan Jones, Micah Baskerville, Ar’Darius Washington and Kelvin Joseph, as well as two newly minted additions to the class in Scott and Rosenthal.
Recently offered tight end Geor’Quarious Spivey made his way back to Baton Rouge for a second time this month. Spivey, a receiver at Richwood (La.) High School, procured an offer from Orgeron during the team’s skill camp on June 4.
Among the 2019 visitors, newly minted commit Thomas Perry impressed offensive line coach Jeff Grimes. Perry, who added an offer from Texas A&M earlier this month, earned his LSU offer and committed on the spot at the end of the afternoon.
Priority Tangipahoa targets Ishmael Sopsher and Devonta Lee were also on hand. So was one-time commit Derek Stingley Jr.
Class of 2020 running back Ashaad Clayton drew an offer from LSU during the Tigers’ joint satellite camp with Tulane in New Orleans on Friday. He made his first unofficial visit to LSU on Saturday along with the Warren Easton (La.) Charter School 7-on-7 squad, which made noise in the tournament.

Raymond continues to prioritize Stingley
Stingley, the state’s top cornerback and a one-time LSU commit, returned to campus for a second time this summer. The 4-star Dunham (La.) standout committed to Corey Raymond and the Tigers at this time a year ago when he showed out as LSU’s high school camp and committed to Les Miles. Earlier this spring, Stingley reopened his recruitment as his offer sheet continued to spike.
Stingley stopped by campus during the skill player camp on June 4 and competed with his high school team in the 7-on-7 tournament on Saturday. The entire LSU staff was put on notice.
Raymond kept close tabs on Stingley, who was absolutely dominant at corner and impressive as a wide receiver, too. Area recruiter and recruiting coordinator Tommie Robinson also spent a good chunk of time chatting up Stingley, as well as his father, who made the visit as well.
Stingley will be back on campus Thursday for LSU’s elite camp. He was certainly the center of attention during Saturday’s event and there’s no reason to believe that the trend won’t continue later this week. The 4-star corner remains a priority for LSU and Raymond as the Tigers look to stay in the mix for the elite in-state target.

Attention on Lee
Tangipahoa Parish has not produced many Tigers in recent recruiting classes, but Orgeron and LSU are looking to buck that trend beginning with the 2019 class.
Amite (La.) High School 5-star wide receiver Devonta Lee did not compete in the 7-on-7 tournament, but made his way to campus along with defensive lineman Ishmael Sopsher for an unofficial visit. Offensive coordinator and area recruiter Matt Canada was glued to Lee’s hip for the bulk of the afternoon before LSU GM Austin Thomas lent a hand in talking to the priority target.
Lee has been open that he is already impressed with the Tigers’ new-look offense after making several visits to campus this spring and summer. He also has been in regular communication with Canada, Orgeron and wide receivers coach Mickey Joseph. One source told SEC Country that the LSU staff was feeling very confident about their chances to eventually landing Lee, who is also strongly considering Alabama and Florida State. A decision won’t come until close to National Signing Day 2019, but the Tigers have put themselves in a very advantageous position with the All-World talent early on in the process.
Get to work Pettito.

The Ferriday duo
LSU’s camp yielded a pair of booms from the Ferriday (La.) High School tandem of Scott and Rosenthal. That bolstered the Tigers’ 2018 class with a fourth edge rusher in the form of 6-foot-4, 210-pound Scott and versatile defensive lineman Rosenthal, who is capable of playing all across the line, as well as potentially offensive tackle.
Scott, a 3-star athlete by trade, worked out with the defensive linemen and edge rushers for the bulk of the afternoon, most notably under the watch of his primary recruiter Dennis Johnson. Scott was absolutely impressive generating a pass rush and was arguably the top performer of the bunch. While he is listed as an athlete and plays tight end for Ferriday, expect him to remain a DE/OLB for LSU. With the addition of Scott in the class, the Tigers hold commitments from four edge rushers: Scott, Jarell Cherry, Travez Moore and Adam Anderson. A fourth BUCK linebacker was a goal for the staff, which had missed on Andrew Chatfield and was very much in the mix for Andres Fox. Scott is not the big name that LSU fans might know — yet — but has all of the physical tools and athleticism to thrive in this role.
Part 2 of this equation is the commitment from Rosenthal. The 4-star defensive lineman worked out as both defensive end and tackle during Saturday’s camp. At 6-foot-7 and 330 pounds, Rosenthal is the state’s top defensive lineman and a top-10 prospect in the state, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. A one-time Alabama verbal commit, Rosenthal de-committed from the Tide last spring while then deciding to attend the LSU spring game. If LSU wasn’t going to take a quarterback in 2018, it intended on using that scholarship on another front-seven player. Rosenthal bolsters the defensive line depth but has the size to develop into an offensive tackle, too.
Rosenthal wanted to be recruited as a defensive lineman, so Orgeron’s willingness to give him that opportunity played a crucial role in landing in the Tigers’ class.

Warren Thompson, a 4-star wide receiver from Seffner, Fla., said he has eliminated Florida. “I like the school, but it’s not a fit for me. I see a better fit at schools other than Florida.” Thompson plans to announce his two finalists this month.
Thompson eliminated Alabama this weekend as well, even though he didn't hold a committable offer.

Trey Dean, a 4-star safety from Hampton, Ga., said he would be committed to the Gators right now if former secondary coach Torrian Gray didn’t leave for the Washington Redskins. “No doubt about it, if he was still there I’d be committed. The relationship I had with Coach Gray was unbreakable.” Dean said he still likes Florida but hasn’t bonded yet with Gray’s successor, Corey Bell. He plans to decide on July 31.

Mark Pope, a 4-star wide receiver from Miami, is committed to the hometown Hurricanes. However, he still likes the Gators and visited Florida on June 1. “I enjoyed myself. The whole coaching staff wanted me to come up there and talk to them, so I went. They said they’re still there for me if I change my mind.”

John Dixon, a 2019 cornerback from Tampa, Fla., received an offer from the Gators earlier this month after camping at UF. “I was surprised by the offer. I grew up a Florida fan so that’s hard to pass up.” Dixon also has been offered in June by Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, Oregon and Tennessee. He plans to make a decision after his junior season.

Harrison Bailey, a 2020 quarterback from Marietta, Ga., is one of Florida’s top targets in his class. He last visited UF for the spring game and believes the Gators’ offense will be better this year. “Feleipe [Franks] looked really good. The quarterbacks they have in there now are pretty decent. I think [the staff] works to their capabilities. They have the wideouts to sling it around, but they have a big offensive line to run it if they need to.”

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee made a good impression on Greg Emerson, one of the premier defensive linemen from the Volunteer State who was on campus for ‘Orange Carpet Day.’
Emerson did not commit to the Vols, but he enjoyed the camaraderie with current commits such as Alontae Taylor and Cade Mays on Saturday.
“They try to make me feel at home,” Emerson told SEC Country. “I try to make them feel like they are at home, too, even though I’m not committed. This is my home.”
Taylor stuck with Emerson throughout the day. He pushed the idea of joining the Vols.
“We were hard on Greg Emerson this weekend,” Taylor told SEC Country.
Emerson remained Tennessee’s top target heading into the weekend and will continue in the No. 1 spot until his commitment.
The idea of being so high on Tennessee’s board stays with Emerson. He understands recruitments are not like this for everyone.
“It’s good to know a big SEC team like Tennessee wants somebody like me,” Emerson said.

STOCK UP

Trey Knox
The class of 2019 wide receiver is currently ranked as a 5.8 four-star but after another impressive performance, it’s hard not to see him making a move when the first numerical Rivals100 is released for the 2019 class later this summer. Ohio State, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama and several other programs are among the early favorites for Knox.

Devonta Lee
One could make the case that Lee belongs in the stock up category, especially after excelling as both a wide receiver and defensive back at the event. But Lee is already ranked as a 6.0 and he didn’t quite do enough this weekend to earn the elusive five-star status. LSU, Alabama and several others are involved in Lee’s recruitment.

Trey Palmer
Initially ranked as a safety, Palmer earned his invitation to the event as a wide receiver and didn’t disappoint. His speed and athleticism help him get open against most defensive backs and he has knack for making big plays. LSU, Alabama and several others are in the early mix for Palmer.

Xavier Williams
Williams, who gets separation rather routinely, continues to struggle catching the football. This is not a one or two-camp trend at this juncture. Williams is still an explosive elite athlete, but catching the ball is a crucial skill for a receiver.

1. Who did you see in Indianapolis that you thought, this kid could start this fall for some Power Five conference teams?
ROB CASSIDY (Southeast): Trevor Lawrence and it’s not just “some” schools. Lawrence is good enough right now to play for roughly more than half of the Power 5 programs in America. That seems insane, I know, but I firmly believe it.
MIKE FARRELL (National): The obvious answer is Amon-Ra St. Brown because it's easier for wide receivers to transition and make an early impact in college than it is for any other offensive position. He's strong, fast, runs great routes and attacks the football. But I'll be honest, I was surprised when the first name that popped into my head was 2019 OL Clay Webb. St. Brown is my answer, but Webb could be very special.
ADAM GORNEY (National/West): I thought most of the wide receiver group was physically dominant and many of them looked like they could be playing college football right now. Not only did they have excellent size but many of them including Amon-Ra St. Brown, Kevin Austin, Brennan Eagles, Terrace Marshall, Al'Vonte Woodard and Devonta Jason especially were jacked up and just looked great. Probably no one looked better than Austin, who's all of 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds and looked like a special recruit in the making.
JOSH HELMHOLDT (Midwest): Amon-Ra St. Brown is a good pick, but I'm going with the two quarterbacks: Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields. Maybe the best top two quarterback performances I have seen at this event in the six-year history. Besides having all the physical tools, they both see the field extremely well and have all the intangibles.
NICK KRUEGER (Texas): Coming into the camp, we all thought that Amon-Ra St. Brown and Trevor Lawrence were going to be show-stealers and they certainly delivered. St. Brown is going to be a lethal inside-out receiver in college and Lawrence’s quiet confidence paired with his skill makes him the top player in the country. Otherwise, I thought the defensive back group from Texas were all exceptional, with Anthony Cook, D’Shawn Jamison and Jalen Green all providing some brilliant moments against a strong wide receiver group.
CHAD SIMMONS (Southeast): Amon-Ra St. Brown is the guy. He is an advanced wide receiver and the position he plays is one of the easiest for young players to make an impact at. He plays with an edge, he has great hands and he is a great route runner. He could skip his senior year in high school and make a big impact in college football in 2017.
WOODY WOMMACK (Southeast): It's kind of a copout to go with the nation's No. 1 player, but if he's the best how can you go wrong? Trevor Lawrence was his usual impressive self and he showed the ability to make pretty much every throw. Throw in his level of engagement and competitive sprit and it's hard to believe Lawrence couldn't step in and start for a number of college programs this fall.
