3. BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE FIVE-STAR CHALLENGE
A few things behind the scenes from the weekend.
- I really like Chris Smith, and Georgia fans should be excited about him. This is a hard worker and a kid who has a ton of energy and always wants to challenge himself.
- Clemson is getting a special player in Trevor Lawrence, we all know that. But they are also getting a high character kid who has a great persona off the field but is a nasty competitor on it. Leadership is a huge part of his game - Lawrence has every opportunity to be an egomaniac, and he’s the opposite.
- Texas A&M fans are going to love the energy that Leon O’Neal brings to the table. The kid is constantly going and has an amazing positive attitude. Kids gravitate toward him.
- Justin Dedich is a kid I wasn’t sold on before the event, but I now think he’s going to be a steady, three-year starter at center for whoever gets him. This is a kid who came into the event admittedly intimidated and never backed down and actually rocked everyone he faced at least once.
- James Cook could really go to Georgia or someplace other than Florida State. It’s not about the depth chart, it’s about following Dalvin at FSU, which is understandably something that would give anyone pause.
- Alabama fans may be worried about a lack of commitments, but that’s a bit laughable to commitments Pierce Quick and early ‘Bama lean Clay Webb. Listening to the perspective of 2019 kids about Nick Saban’s recruiting compared to some of the doomsday folks on message boards and social media is actually quite interesting.
- Tyreke Smith is new to football, so imagine how good he can be in a few years. He reminded me, at least with his balance and agility, of Da’Shawn Hand. He doesn’t have the same resume at the same stage, but it’s hard to find kids with that kind of natural ability off of contact.

INDIANAPOLIS – The 2017 edition of the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas is over. Some big names emerged from loaded group of offensive and defensive linemen, as did some surprises. Here's a look at the most impressive linemen on both sides of the ball from the event's two sessions.

OG Trey Hill
Recruiting wrap: Hill has over 30 offers, but his most recent came in April from Alabama and Ohio State.
Performance: Hill just continued to do what made him so strong at his appearance at the Rivals Camp in Atlanta this spring -- he used his sturdy construction to anchor down in front of defensive tackles and refuse to be moved backward. Hill is a clear power-blocker and is very nimble for a player with his sort of size.

DE KJ Henry
Recruiting wrap: Henry released a top 10 in early April.
Performance: As a five-star prospect, you’re expected to be good, and Henry delivered all afternoon. He was the only defensive lineman on the day who won a one-on-one rep without even being touched. Henry does a fantastic job of rolling off contact and keeping offensive linemen from getting a clean attempt at landing a block.

quote:
OT Penei Sewell
Recruiting wrap: Sewell has over 25 offers.
Performance: Sewell was one of the more interesting prospects to watch at the Five-Star Challenge because a better conclusion on whether he is talented or just massive needed to be formed. No doubt was he one of the most powerful players at the camp, but he did a fantastic job of running pass rushers out of plays and giving very little opportunity to get around him.

quote:
OC Clay Webb
Recruiting wrap: Webb has a handful of impressive offers: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi State
Performance: Webb had to pull himself out of the afternoon session with a sore shoulder, but was looking well on his way to being in contention to win offensive line MVP honors had he participated all day. Webb has such strong and thick extremities, he gets the upper-hand in his one-on-one reps just by boxing in defensive tackles with only his forearms.

INDIANAPOLIS – Could Penei Sewell possibly pull one of the biggest recruiting shockers this cycle?
The high-level four-star offensive tackle said at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas over the weekend that Nevada is a serious player in his recruitment since his brothers, Gabriel and Nephi, play there.
Other than Nevada, Sewell said he’s serious about Alabama and possibly some other schools but didn’t name many during interviews.
Asked about top teams on his list other than the Crimson Tide, Sewell said: “Right now, I’d say just Nevada really.”
The Wolf Pack has to like their chances at this point, but Alabama looms large in the recruitment of the massive offensive lineman from St. George (Utah) Desert Hills.
A recent visit to Tuscaloosa went really well and the Crimson Tide smartly offered Sewell’s younger brother, 2020 linebacker Noah, over the weekend.
“I really liked meeting the coaches for the first time,” Sewell said of his Alabama trip. “I got to meet coach (Nick) Saban. Saban is Saban. I got to meet coach (Brian) Daboll, the OC, and coach (Brent) Key. I got to meet with all those coaches and it was awesome.
“They said how I was a top priority and the fact that they weren’t talking all about football stood out to me. They were talking about life after football, so that was awesome.”
Sewell admits it was important that Alabama offered his brother. Family seems like a significant factor for the four-star as he looks at working on a top list of schools - one major reason why Nevada is so engaged in his recruitment.
“It’s definitely big,” Sewell said. “I have two brothers in Nevada and now my brother is picking up some heat. Getting to play with at least one of them would be big.”
As for Oklahoma, that could be tricky. The Sooners had been considered a serious school on his list but with Bob Stoops retiring, Sewell said he’s no longer sure about the Big 12 power.
“I don’t know about Oklahoma after Bob Stoops (left),” Sewell said. “We had a relationship over Twitter so I’m going to have to see about that.”
The St. George Desert Hills standout said he’s not certain about a decision timetable but would like to get it done before his senior season.

I found the stuff on Houston Griffith, the kid we offered yesterday:

Houston Griffith
Recruiting Wrap: Griffith has more than 30 offers.
Performance: Griffith may not have won the DB MVP award in St. Louis, but he very well could have. He showed great reaction closing on receivers while playing off-coverage in one-on-one reps and is quick enough while doing so that he often beat receivers to the ball all afternoon.

O’FALLON, Ill. -- The St. Louis stop of the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas rolled into O’Fallon Township High School on Sunday with players from more than 20 states turning out to compete. With so many stars on hands there were plenty of impressive performances. We break down the day’s top 12 performers on defense.

Houston Griffith
Recruiting wrap: Griffith can go anywhere he wants. Florida State, Notre Dame and Ohio State are a few of the schools he is considering.
Performance: Griffith plays with a lot of confidence and that was on display. He worked hard through the drills, but when it came to competition, he made it look fairly easy at times. He knocked down a few passes, he picked off one and he was going up against many of the top wideouts in attendance.

BEST DEFENSIVE BACK
“Houston Griffith looked really good. That’s the guy I took notice of.” - 4-star ATH Cameron Jurgens, Beatrice (Neb.)
“Probably Jalani Williams. He’s patient with it. He doesn’t gamble or try to do anything crazy. He’s patient.” - 2019 WR Jameson Williams, St. Louis Cardinal Ritter
“It’s Houston Griffith. He has smooth hips and breaks on the ball.” – 2018 RB Canaan Brooks, St. Louis Lutheran North
“Houston Griffith. He is great fundamentally and he is tough. We had some good battles and he gave me a run for my money. He is very competitive too.” – 2019 4-star WR Trey Knox, Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Blackman
“Andre Turrentine. He is young, but he did really well. He was competitive, he worked hard and he was able to hang with the older guys real well.” – 2019 4-star DB Adonis Otey, Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Blackman
“Probably Houston Griffith. He’s nice. He was just aggressive. A lot of guys were just soft in their off coverage but he was just patient and he made really good plays on the ball.” – Alontae Taylor
“Houston Griffith is one of the best here. I wish I would have gone against him more He’s physical, he covers good, he has good hips.” – Kamryn Babb
I mean, would you be able to focus lined up across from this:

Rivals100 defensive back Houston Griffith missed the Orlando stop of the series because of spring break, but he wasn’t going to let that keep him from earning his invitation to Indianapolis. Griffith showed no ill effects from his travel from Florida and he used his physicality to overpower several wide receivers at the line of scrimmage.

The SoonerScoop.com staff swarmed St. Louis for Sunday's Rivals Three-Stripe Camp where multiple Oklahoma targets were on hand to showcase their talents.
Here are five standouts and Sooner targets from a camp that featured elite talent from 20 different states - including commitments for programs like Alabama, Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Breakdown: The teammate of current Sooner commitment T.J. Pledger spoke before the camp about how his IMG comrade has been selling him on the idea of continuing their playing career together in Norman. Whether he lands in Oklahoma or not, Griffith will provide immediate defensive back help to whatever school he chooses. The nation's No. 2 athlete has the frame, physicality, and length to play safety, as well as the athleticism and flexibility to play cornerback at the division-one level. Griffith was especially effective in press coverage by winning the initial fight at the line of scrimmage and ending routes before they even began.

Xavier Williams is camping at Ohio State today.

Think Griffith is at OSU today as well.
OSU wants Campbell/Cook to finish at corner (who wouldn't), but Griffith is I think the guy OSU likes next.
Have Banks who kind of came out of nowhere with his commitment so will be interesting to see how it works out.
Williams had some struggles at some camps right? Thought I remember seeing some not so great pub on him recently

As far as everything other than consistently catching the ball, Williams is basically a 5* level talent. He has very inconsistent hands, apparently, though. To the level that it's commented on at basically every camp he attends. But he gets open and creates tons of separation.

We're still a ways away from the early signing period in December, but that doesn't mean the Tide isn't beginning to trend for a number of top prospects.
With Alabama's first summer camp in the books, here's a look at five prospects that picked up a Crystal Ball selection for the Crimson Tide in the last week.

Luke Ford, TE, Carterville (Ill.)
Ford, a recent Arkansas decommit, is expected to visit Alabama on Saturday. The 6-foot-7, 250-pounder already holds an offer from the Tide, which does not yet have a tight end committed. Earlier this spring a commitment appeared imminent from the nation’s top junior college tight end, Dominick Wood-Anderson, but after a visit to Eugene, the Ducks seized momentum. Other names are on the radar for Alabama like Glenn Beal and Tyneil Hopper. Is it Ford that soon takes the spot? We’ll see. 247Sports’ top Crystal Baller, Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong, thinks so.

Jaycee Horn, CB, Alpharetta (Ga.)
After camping at Alabama last week, Horn told BamaOnLine he no longer had any leaders after naming the Tide atop his list in April, only to name South Carolina No. 1 in May. The Tide is looking to add cornerbacks in the class, and has honed in on Horn as a top target. The NFL legacy could make a decision at any moment, he says.
