Davis collects LSU offer after strong camp

Tyrion Davis is a known commodity in Baton Rouge.

The hometown hero helped Southern University Lab (La.) School collect a third consecutive state championship six months ago, and in doing so, became a household name in recruiting circles. The 2019 4-star tailback had a busy spring, which was taken to extraordinary heights over the past 24 hours.

Davis camped at LSU for Sunday’s skill player prospect camp, where he drew a ton of attention from LSU running backs coach Tommie Robinson. However, Davis left Baton Rouge for Alabama without an offer in hand.

Fast forward 24 hours and Davis now claims offers from both the Tide and the Tigers. A fast-winding day left the state’s No. 9 prospect in rare form.

“It’s every player’s dream,” said Davis, referring to his new offers from LSU and Alabama. “I’m very excited and I really appreciate the coaches for giving me an opportunity. I’m lost for words.”

The 6-foot-1, 215-pound tailback joins an elite group of 2019 backs to hold offers from the Tigers along with fellow Baton Rouge native, 5-star Noah Cain, and Destrehan (La.) 4-star John Emery Jr.

In the time that Davis left Louisiana and returned back, Robinson and the LSU staff watched how the running back performed in Sunday’s camp. The Tigers’ running back coach then took a look back at Davis’ sophomore year film and couldn’t resist pulling the trigger on an offer.

“I was sitting by (LSU commit) Damone (Clark) and he told me that Coach Tommie wanted to talk. He said that he went over my film again this morning and really liked me at camp,” Davis recalled. “Then Coach O got on the phone and said he would love for me to be a part of the LSU family and that he can’t wait to get me back on campus.”

A return trip to Baton Rouge is certainly in the cards, too.

Clark and Kardell Thomas, two of LSU’s commits in the 2018 and 2019 classes, respectively, and Davis will likely camp at LSU later this month. That will give Davis a chance to return to campus for the first time with an offer in hand and a chance to reconnect with Robinson and other members of the coaching staff.

The two-week break between Monday until then is good for Davis, who is still reeling from the offer from LSU.

“I was still soaking it all in from ‘Bama, and when Coach O called me I didn’t know how to take it,” Davis laughed. “I just thanked him for the offer because my head was spinning.”

At this juncture, Davis does not yet have a leader.

As far as a commitment timeline goes, Davis is in no rush to make a decision. He’s going to continue to earn offers and weigh all his options down the road.

How will LSU fill out the rest of its 2018 class? Here are SEC Country’s latest projections:

RB: Harold Joiner, Fabian Franklin

Analysis: Joiner, the 4-star running back from Alabama, has named LSU his leader. The only holdup in a commitment is Joiner’s height. At 6-foot-3 and 218 pounds, Joiner is an inch or two away from moving to another position. That would give a team like Auburn or Texas A&M an edge. Franklin, another 4-star back out of Mississippi, is high on the Tigers. The staff visited him twice during the NCAA’s Evaluation Period, and now it’s a matter of earning a good ACT score. If and when Franklin lands an offer, expect a quick boom. Other names to monitor include Chris Curry and UCLA commit AJ Carter.

TE: Glenn Beal

Analysis: Beal has been close to committing to LSU a handful of times, but after procuring several big-time offers his recruitment could last into the fall and all the way to National Singing Day. Louisiana’s top tight end is weighing LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss and UCLA. Like the receivers, Beal is waiting to see how Canada uses the H-backs this fall. Alabama has an edge in this department because of O.J. Howard’s success. Still, Beal has been a regular at LSU recruiting functions and would like to remain in-state, so long that the Tigers’ offense suits him well.

DB: Patrick Surtain Jr., Kelvin Joseph, Nadab Joseph, Ar’Darius Washington

Analysis: The loss of Caden Sterns created a void at safety, but after taking three All-Americans in Todd Harris, Grant Delpit and JaCoby Stevens a year ago, there isn’t a great need there in 2018. Expect Corey Raymond to use Nadab Joseph at corner and push Kelvin Joseph back at safety. Washington is an ideal fit in the nickel. Corner remains a pressing need and the No. 1 prospect on LSU’s board is Surtain. He has admittedly been close to pulling the trigger on a commitment to LSU and could do so at some point this fall. He should be the final piece of the puzzle in the secondary.

Scout's Underclassmen Standouts at The Opening New Orleans Regional Camp

This is from a couple months ago, but we just offered him:

Nakobe Dean, OLB, Horn Lake (Miss.) -- LSU and Mississippi State recently offered and Dean should soon emerge on a lot of college programs' radars. The 2019 prospect showed foot quickness and aggression in the make-you-miss drills against running backs at Sunday's camp. He possesses prototypical 4-3 outside linebacker skills with lateral mobility and downhill athleticism. -- Gabe Brooks

It is scary to think Bryan Bresee has three seasons of high school football left. The 2020 Damascus (Md.) defensive lineman was dominant on Saturday. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Bresee was explosive off the ball and showed good flexibility. He also displayed quick hands and was very aggressive. He won reps with power and speed -- and did so easily. His lengthy offer list includes Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State, North Carolina, Penn State, Tennessee and West Virginia among many others. He will camp at Alabama, Clemson and Ohio State in the next few weeks.

2020 Virginia Beach (Va.) Bishop Sullivan cornerback Sheridan Jones is an elite prospect and showed why Saturday. Jones' length and athleticism frustrated receivers all day. He also showed great backpedal quickness, quick hips and great closing speed. Jones' offer list reached double digits and includes Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Maryland, Tennessee and West Virginia among many others.

Washington (D.C.) Woodson running back Mychale Salahuddin stood out for two reasons (beyond the gold cleats). His ability to accelerate and reach top speed in a few steps made him tough in coverage, and during the drills his head remained still and steady even as he changed directions and stepped over bags. A fourth star is on the way for the impressive ball carrier. Among his schools of interest are USC, North Carolina, Nebraska, Michigan, Maryland, Ohio State, Alabama, Clemson and Oklahoma.

Jack Tuttle was one of the top performers at the Elite 11 Finals over the weekend, proving to be one of the more effective passers on the field and impressing the coaching staff with his demeanor off of it.

The four-star quarterback from San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills is ranked No. 199 overall in the Scout 300 for the 2018 class and has been a known commodity for a while, but this was a coming-out party of sorts given the national stage. Despite the big names and top-flight prospects in attendance, Tuttle stood out among the field to punch his ticket to The Opening Finals later this month.

On the recruiting front, Tuttle committed to Utah in December and, though he has since added a number of major offers, remains completely solid with the Utes. Check out the video above to hear what the 6-foot-4, 195-pound prospect had to say about his Elite 11 experience, recruiting for Utah and more.

Not only have we gotten CBs for Bobby Brown, we've also gotten two for Coynis Miller.

One of them was from Andrew Ellis, a writer for Ohio State.

The other, though, is the important one. It came from Keith Niebuhr.
