QB Trevor Lawrence

What more can be said about Trevor Lawrence? The top player in the land and five-star Cartersville (Ga.) quarterback looked and played the part all afternoon long, not bad for a guy who hasn't been healthy throughout 2017 to this point. He is big, strong, precise, anticipatory, mobile and has a certain air about him even with most sets of eyes on him well more than any other prospect in attendance. Lawrence makes most drills, designed to make quarterbacks uncomfortable, looks fairly easy. He throws a catchable ball from multiple angles and can adjust his velocity according to the coverage. Clemson is getting a prospect dozens of college football programs would love to build their offense around.

We still haven't given up on him.

QB Jarren Williams

Lawrenceville (Ga.) Central Gwinnett quarterback Jarren Williams continues his red-hot spring. In addition to new scholarship offers throughout the SEC and ACC, the rising senior has impressed many who have seen him throw on campus and otherwise. Sunday was more of the same, as he punched his ticket to the Elite 11 semifinals with consistency and accuracy all day long. Williams may not wow in any one category, but he can throw on several planes and efficiently on the move. Williams has progressed as much as any QB in the region over the last year or so.

Safety Trey Dean

Four-star Dutchtown (Ga.) safety Trey Dean frustrated receivers throughout the event with his physicality, athleticism and length. He lined up at safety and cornerback and excelled at both. Georgia appears to be the favorite, while Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee are also in the mix.

DE KJ Henry

Among the highest-rated prospects at the event, K.J. Henry looked like it all afternoon. He was the top edge talent in terms of production, seldom being slowed by blockers. But it was not just his speed on Sunday, as Henry played with great leverage and strength when making inside moves in addition to spins and undercuts against the many tackles he faced. Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Penn State are schools to watch for Henry.

CB Jaycee Horn

Four-star Alpharetta (Ga.) cornerback Jaycee Horn made play after play against some of the South's best receivers due to his aggressiveness, length, athleticism and ball skills. He was comfortable in man or zone coverage. Horn was also very physical and is the ulitimate competitor. Alabama leads for Horn, but several other SEC and ACC schools are are also pursuing him

LB Teradja Mitchell

Virginia Beach (Va.) Bishop Sullivan outside linebacker Teradja Mitchell showed why he was the top-ranked defensive prospect at the event. His combination of size, strength, athleticism and aggressiveness were too much for anyone to handle. He was sensational all day. Mitchell is down to Florida State, LSU and Ohio State and will make his decision sometime in the next month.

LB Owen Pappoe

For the second year in a row, 2019 Loganville (Ga.) Grayson outside linebacker Owen Pappoe earned an invite to The Opening Finals. He showed great athleticism and was very fluid in drills. In the 7-on-7 portion, he was instinctive, comfortable in coverage and did a nice job putting himself in postion to make plays. Pappoe has close to 40 scholarship offers.

Ohio State cornerbacks coach and recruiter extraordinaire Kerry Coombs was in Georgia on Monday, stopping at Thomson High in the afternoon to watch defensive back Christian Tutt.

“Coach Coombs watched our whole (spring) practice,” Tutt said. “He talked to all my coaches. He wanted to know if he has a chance. People have been saying I’m down to Alabama or Florida State. But Ohio State is still in it. My coach told him that.”

Tutt said he actually has a final six.

“Georgia and Ohio State are still in it,” he said. “And Nebraska and Texas too. Those are my final six. I’m announcing May 30 at 4:00 pm.”

Again, there are differing opinions from Alabama mods on whether Tutt holds a committable offer or not.

3. The "other" freshmen receivers at Bama

Alabama true freshman wide receiver Jerry Jeudy was one of the stars of the spring games. After torching Alabama's secondary in the A-Day game for 134 yards and two scores on five catches, he's being compared nationally and internally to Calvin Ridley (a comparison I began making last July after The Opening Finals).

Jeudy's performance was no shock to me or anyone that followed his high school career. My expectations for him are also high for the fall but I still contend that he'll be the third-best receiver in Alabama's 2018 recruiting class when all is said and done. The other two just aren't on campus yet.

While Jeudy has been learning the Alabama offense and vibing with its young quarterbacks, Henry Ruggs and Devonta Smith have been making their own noise back in high school.

This spring, Smith, at 6-foot-1, placed third in the state 100 meter finals in Louisiana with a time of 10.62 seconds. Ruggs, at 6-foot, won the state championship in the 100 meters in Alabama, setting a meet record of 10.58 seconds. Neither of these guys are year-round track athletes. They play football in the fall, basketball in the winter and run track in the spring. When they focus in on strictly football this summer, things are going to get scary.

Per my own rankings in the Top247 for the class of 2017, Ruggs came out as the No. 1 wide receiver, with Smith at No. 3 and Jeudy at No. 5.

Because Jeudy is extremely polished and has a semester head start, he may still be the best receiver during the 2017 season but the other two are coming and Alabama's pass game is coming with them.

I can't wait to see Smith and Ruggs in action.

Bama needs to have some committable offers out or they may have a 10 man class

I'd be fine with a really small class as long as we fill our needs. We're stacked almost everywhere except for numbers at DL and DB. Early indications are that we evaluated our "relatively" lower rated recruits in the 2016 and 2017 classes very well. If we only signed 20-22 this year, and it allowed us to sign >25 in next year's loaded class (where we already look to be in good shape for several projected 5* guys), then that's fine to me. As long as we hit a home run at DL and DB.

We may only sign 22, but it will be a "full class" due to Joseph Bulovas, Hunter Brannon and Jarez Parks.

And I'm fine with that.

Florida got two CBs for Justin Fields.

I wish we could get in on him, but I don't think he'll want to sit behind Hurts and Tagovailoa that long.

frick.

Even though Michigan picked up a commitment from QB Joe Milton the other day, they still got two CBs for Tyler Shough this morning.

At least we finally have an answer to how you pronounce Tyler Shough's last name:

Is it "show" "shoe" or "shuff"?

Wrong, wrong and wrong, actually.

It's "shuck"

Lol. Go figure. We could wind up having two QBs on the roster with names that are pronounced different from how they look.
