MATTHEWS, N.C. — Five-star DE KJ Henry, one of the top recruits for South Carolina in 2018, is approaching the next step in his recruitment.

At some point this summer, after he visits Penn State, Henry’s top 10 will be chopped in half. Alabama, Charlotte, Clemson, Georgia, Louisville, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina and Virginia Tech are the suitors hoping to make the cut.

The Gamecocks hosted him on April 1 for the spring game.

“It’s really no secret that they’re looking for some pass rushers,” Henry said. “They say I could make an immediate impact and that’s something that sounds special. [Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson], he came down and he told me pretty much, at my school, everybody knows my name there. It would pretty much be the same [at South Carolina].

“Just thinking about that, that’s a really special feeling. Great school. Very competitive as well.”

According to the 247Sports composite, Henry is the ranked as the No. 2 weakside defensive end in the Class of 2018. Nationally, he’s No. 18 overall.

“They’ve definitely got some playmakers down there, but they’re not getting to the quarterback as fast as you want them to, so that was a big thing that hit home,” Henry said. “You hate to see a team that’s not successful with it, but as a recruit, it’s something you want to see as far as getting on the field.”

Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Penn State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech are pushing the hardest.

Henry, who graduates from West Forsyth High School (Clemmons, N.C.) in December, plans to take his five official visits before making a decision.

Will Muschamp and company have been putting in work on the recruiting trail. And one of the country’s top linebackers has taken notice in Quay Walker.

Walker is a 4-star product out of Cordele, Georgia, and had previously put out a top-5 of LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Florida and the home state Georgia Bulldogs.

But on Saturday, Walker took to Twitter to announce that the Bulldogs had been bumped out of the top-5 and in place of South Carolina. What makes it even more stunning is that Georgia had been considered the favorite at one point to land Walker.

Walker’s former teammate is 4-star 2017 standout Markaviest Bryant, who ended up signing with Auburn on National Signing Day. Walker is the No. 20 prospect in the state of Georgia and the No. 11 outside linebacker in the country, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

As the summer approaches, we are beginning to see more 2018 recruits, both in SEC territory and around the country, narrow down their scholarship offers and make their top schools public.

The latest recruit to do so is 3-star linebacker Michael Harris, who released his top 7 on Twitter on Saturday morning. Included in Harris’ list are six SEC programs: South Carolina, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Auburn:

TOP 7 . Always subject to change but this is where I feel best at. Thank God for the blessings. Please Respect My Decision. pic.twitter.com/Rt3LG4OCol

— Money Mike?? (@Illionairemike) May 6, 2017

Harris is ranked as the No. 14 inside linebacker in the country and the No. 33 player in the state of Georgia, per the 247Sports composite rankings, and any of these schools, including Ohio State, would be more than happy to bring the 6-foot-2, 215-pound prospect from Tucker, Ga., on board.

The South Carolina Gamecocks got some good news on Saturday from one of the nation’s best high school quarterbacks, Dakereon Joyner.

Joyner released his final 2 via his Twitter account. The Gamecocks made the cut, as did North Carolina State.

— Kereon Joyner (@Cant_StopCinco) May 6, 2017

Joyner is a 4-star quarterback from North Charleston, S.C. He is rated as the country’s No. 9 dual-threat quarterback in the 2018 recruiting cycle and the No. 3 player in the state of South Carolina per the 247Sports composite rankings.

The Gamecocks have six commits in their 2018 class, which is good for eighth in the SEC. They added Waycross, Ga., LB Ernest Jones to their class on Friday night.

Good. I don't think this kid is very good.

I'm beginning to think only the top 5 star guys have a commitable offer at this point and none of them will be commiting until much later.

Take this FWIW and I've posted it before, but I've seen both Rodney Orr and Bama K say (and WELL before the Spring evaluation period) that we would be EXTREMELY selective this year since February. I've not really seen anyone say or emphasize this so much in past years. Even saw a recent Bama K post that said that he's hearing that as many as 90% of our class would have to come through camps. Now, of course that 90% figure would have to be a bit of an exaggeration, as that would mean all except for 2 guys. But several people have been very emphatic for more than a couple months now that we would be unusually selective this year, and that coming to camp would be a bigger deal than it even normally is.

I hope Bama doesn't piss off some recruits by going that route.

Where are the top Coastal Alabama spring football games

In the high school sports world, the month of May means crowning champions in most spring sports.

It also means spring football.

Most Coastal Alabama teams, who haven’t already started spring practice, start this week. Many will cap off the 10-day work session with a spring game.

Here are some of the more intriguing games on the slate this year in chronological order.

Sidney Lanier at Williamson, 6 p.m., May 12

This game kicks off the schedule at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Friday. The Poets feature three-star quarterback recruit James Foster (6-2.5, 210 pounds). The senior (pictured) is committed to Missouri. He also had offers from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina, among others.

Williamson will counter with South Alabama commits Jamall Hickbottom and Roger McCreary. Hickbottom, a linebacker, finished with 105 tackles last year. McCreary, likely a safety in college, had 2,000 all-purpose yards and 17 TDs last season.

Fairhope at Spanish Fort, 6 p.m, May 18

This is the second year in a row these two teams have played in a spring game. Both have a lot of questions to answer. The Pirates will try to rebound from a tough 2-8 season a year ago.

The Toros reached the state quarterfinals last season, but must replace Mr. Football runner-up Thomas Johnston and several other Spanish Fort veterans. They do return quarterback Jack Samsel, who started several games a year ago, and have two up-and-coming prospects in wide receiver Kris Draine and cornerback D.J. James.

Saraland at Jackson, TBA, May 18

Stanford quarterback commit Jack West and the Spartans head to Legion Field to play the Aggies. West, rated as the No. 2 prospect in the state for 2018 according to the 247 composite rankings, would like to get a jump on a big senior season with a solid performance in this one. Meanwhile, veteran coach Danny Powell and the Aggies have several holes to fill. The most noticeable loss will be the departure of Ken Handy-Holly, who signed with Minnesota on February. It also marks Saraland coach Jeff Kelly’s return to Jackson, where he coached from 2008-2010.

B.C. Rain at St. Paul's, 6 p.m., May 19

The two former Class 5A, Region 1 rivals square off at E.E. Delaney Stadium. It’s the first time St. Paul’s has played a spring game since Steve Mask has been head coach. The Saints won state titles in 2014 and 2015 but lost to rival Jackson in the quarterfinals in 2016. As usual, they return some talented players, including quarterback Swift Lyle (pictured) and running back Daniel Beard and top recruit Jalyn Armour-Davis. In its first year in Class 6A, B.C. Rain went 5-5 and narrowly missed a playoff berth. Tellis Stone’s Red Raiders return talented noseguard Carlos Johnson Jr.

Blount at Baker, 7 p.m., May 19

Two playoff teams for a year ago square off in West Mobile. It’s the second straight year these teams have played in a spring game. A year ago, Baker beat Blount 40-35. The Hornets and Leopards both have questions to answer, especially at quarterback. Blount must replace Florida signee Kadarius Toney, the Class 6A Back of the Year, while Baker must replace Central Michigan signee Darius Bracy. The Leopards do have a pair of future college players returning at receiver in Collins Woods III and Lebarron Jones (pictured).

Davidson at Baldwin County, 7 p.m., May 19

Coming off his best season since 2010, veteran Davidson coach Fred Riley must rebuild this year. The Warriors, who went 9-2 in 2016, must replace South Alabama quarterback signee Cephus Johnson, running back Donte Edwards, wide receiver James Clemons and more than 20 seniors. Nate McDaniel, entering his fourth season at Baldwin County, again looks like he might have a team that can compete for a playoff spot in the tough Class 6A, Region 1. The Tigers should get a big boost from the return of a healthy Eli Powell (pictured) at quarterback. He missed most of the 2016 season due to an arm injury.

Theodore at Vigor, 6 p.m., May 19

Theodore might be the early favorite in Class 7A, Region 1 with reigning champ McGill-Toolen and runner-up Davidson each losing a load of seniors. The Bobcats return a good nucleus, including quarterback Trevor Andrews on offense and highly recruited nosetackle Timaje Porter on defense. Deric Scott has done an impressive job in two years as head coach at Vigor, leading the Wolves to a 15-8 overall record. Last year’s team went 8-4 and won the Class 5A, Region 1 title. They must replace quarterback Cameron Williams and do-it-all Jacksonville State signee Charles Crawford.

McGill-Toolen at Thompson, 2 p.m., May 20

The Yellow Jackets, who have played for the last two Class 7A state titles, have endured some big changes in the offseason. Head coach Caleb Ross left to take the job at Opelika, replaced by defensive coordinator Earnest Hill. McGill also must replace a huge class of seniors that included All-State quarterback Bubba Thompson, four senior receivers and two-time Coastal Alabama Defensive Player of the year Carlton Martial. Former Spanish Fort coach Mark Freeman has yet to break through in two seasons at Thompson, but highly publicized QB transfer Taulia Tagovailoa – the younger brother of Alabama freshman Tua Tagovailoa – could help change that. Thompson beat McGill in a spring game a year ago.
