Three of Ohio’s more prominent athletes put out their top school lists this week. All three included Ohio State, and as of right now I think that two of the three are in the class for the Buckeyes.

First off was receiver L’Christian Smith out of Huber Heights in Wayne, Ohio. Smith put out his top 10 list and to no one’s surprise the Buckeyes along with Kentucky, Michigan, Cincinnati and Penn State made the cut. Smith has been an interesting recruit as he feels like his future is at wide receiver, but he has mentioned that the Buckeyes and others might see him more as a tight end at the next level. It has been no secret of his affinity for the Kentucky Wildcats as his frequent visits there over the past few months have shown that they are a big player for his services. His high school teammate Alex Reigelsperger committed to the Wildcats a few months back and has been with him on every visit down to Lexington.

(Can change.!!) thank you @Hayesfawcett3 for the edit i'm Blessed to announce my very first top 10 list ..thank you to all my supporters ?? pic.twitter.com/hlSXIQWLbJ

Four-star running back Tavion Thomas followed up Smith’s list with one of his own. Along with the Buckeyes are Oklahoma, Michigan, Alabama and Wisconsin.

Thomas has stated that he wants to go to school with his high school teammate Joseph “JoJo” Scates, and right now the Buckeyes do not have an offer out to Scates, which would hamper that wish. I do think Thomas wants to be a Buckeye and will ultimately pick Ohio State.

Finally, 4-star defensive end -- and this weekend’s Under Armour Lineman Challenge winner -- Tyreke Smith announced his top 12 on Twitter.

Shoutout @Hayesfawcett3 for this one??

Smith included the Buckeyes along with Alabama, Michigan, Penn State and Texas. Right now the crystal ball favors the Buckeyes, but Smith doesn’t seem to be in a rush to make a decision and will take his time.

A couple of other lists were released that had Buckeye implications this week, and those came from 4-star wide receiver Marquez Ezzard out of Georgia (Brenton Cox’s High School teammate) and 4-star wide receiver Arjei Henderson out of Texas.

Georgia is the presumed favorite for Ezzard, although with the commitment of Cox to the Buckeyes, I wouldn’t count out Ohio State in this one. Depending on how the Buckeyes fair with their top wideout targets, Ezzard could find himself a part of this class.

Henderson included the Buckeyes, but he seems like way more of a long shot to eventually pick the Buckeyes. All of his crystal ball projections have him staying down south in either Texas or Oklahoma. Henderson was committed to the Sooners, but reopened his recruitment last week and subsequently released his new list of top schools.

There are lists for ostensibly every facet of modern sports: lists based on recruiting, lists on every statistic ranging from points per game to ranking how players perform on their birthday.

Recruits are no different. They list, too. So it was legitimate news when Justyn Ross, a four-star recruit out of Phenix City, Ala., narrowed his list of potential schools to 11.

It was, not surprisingly, given his hometown, populated by SEC schools. Alabama, Ole Miss, Auburn, Mississippi State, LSU and Florida all made the cut for Ross’ final 11 schools.

The 6-foot-4, 197-pound receiver has no shortage of suitors, of course. He has received offers from more than 20 schools, including both teams in last year’s national title game.

Auburn has been reported as the leading candidate, particularly with quarterback commit Joey Gatewood recruiting Ross to be his favorite future target.

“It’s really important. You’ve got to have a good bond with your quarterback for y’all to play good. It stood out to me,” Ross said of Gatewood’s efforts on A-Day. “He just says that he wants me here with him, that he wants a long wideout.”

At 6-4, Ross would certainly fit the mold of a long wideout. But there is much time yet between now and signing day.

For now, it’s just lists, and Auburn seems to be at the top of this one.

I thought it was odd for Bama to go after a junior college TE. Bama will have a LOT of depth at TE the next few years with the players they already have.

From the Auburn thread:

quote:

May Recruiting Snapshot

It's a new months so going to post a snapshot of where recruiting stands. Idea is for those that don't like reading all these updates can easily see month to month where we stand. All of this is subjective opinion based off what I have read on 247, SECCountry, AL.com & Rivals. Here's last month's snapshot.. I have links to both in the OP

Commits
4* QB Joey Gatewood
4* DE Daquan Newkirk
3* OG Jalil Irvin --> dropped to 3* in composite after ESPN's update rankings
3* RB Shaun Shivers
3* OG Kameron Stutts
3* ATH Kolbi Fuqua --> recruited as a WR but could play S

Everyone seems solid though with AU going after a 2nd QB will be interesting to see if that has impact on Gatewood. Seems like he just loves AU though

Leaders
4* LB Zakoby McClain
4* S Quindarious Monday --> on commit watch
4* DE Andres Fox --> kid clearly wants to come to AU problem is family wants em at Bama, we will see if he gets to make the decision
4* WR Matthew Hill --> another guy to put on commit watch
3* Buck/LB Richard Jibunor --> still a AU/BAMA/TEN but I think we might have slight edge
3* Buck Caleb Tannor --> same here a battle with UGA/BAMA but right now we recruiting the hardest
3* S Derek Turner --> not sure about this one anymore. have not heard his name in awhile but we were his first legit offer

I wouldn't be shocked if Jibunor, Fox, Hill or Monday committed this month. Monday probably won't pull trigger until BCW in June, not sure on the others.

Top Group

4* WR Justyn Ross --> Clemson is a real threat, Bama seems to be trending, dropped to a 4* composite after ESPN new rankings
4* DT Coynis Miller --> might be more than AU/BAMA battle, watch out for LSU/UF/CLEM
4* CB Jalyn Armour-Davis --> still AU/FSU battle with BAMA possibly lurking
4* WR Jacob Copeland --> eliminated Clemson this month released top 5 of AU/UF/BAMA/OM/TEN, Tide are trending
4* RB Harold Joiner --> LSU lean but might outgrow RB spot, if he does AU would be favorite
4* RB Asa Martin --> Gators still lead but AU closed gap, Bama just recently offered and could change the game
4* LB Quay Walker --> named Bama leader, sounds like we might not be recruiting as hard as we used to

4* ATH Nathaniel Watson --> AU no longer in first, tied with MSST who want him on offense & recruiting him harder
4* WR Kearis Jackson --> UGA probably the leader but AU a close 2nd
4* WR Seth Williams --> AU recruiting the hardest but Bama has started to pick it up
4* TE Tyneil Hopper --> still AU/UNC battle unsure how hard we are recruiting
4* OT Richard Gouraige --> CLEM might not have room so probably AU/UF battle with Gators having early edge
4* S Brendon Harris --> Vols lead the way but AU after him hard
4* OT Dylan Wonnum --> good friends with Jalil Irvin, AU has started pushing harder
4* CB Jordan Miner --> still Tiger/Gator battle
4* OG Tank Jenkins --> might not be a take anymore with 2 OG committed
4* S Myles Mason --> AU a clear contender now with Bama slow playing, also watch FSU
4* LB Channing Tindall --> AU has picked up their recruitment though they are chasing SCAR/UGA right now
3* QB Gerry Bohanon --> AU wants a 2nd QB and he could become a top target
3* RB Master Teague --> sounds like SCAR/UGA/AU battle with Gamecocks possible leaders, AU definitely a threat tho
3* CB/S Juanyeh Thomas --> still has top 3 of AU/UF/GT, I like AU's chances
3* WR Marquez Ezzard --> released a recent top 8 that included AU, OHST now team to watch with his buddy 4* DE Brenton Cox committing there
3* WR Shedrick Jackson --> AU offered this past month, Tigers are probably the favorite but GT contending
3* OT Cameron Wire --> wants to go to LSU but no offer, longer they wait AU might become a bigger factor
3* DT Allen Love --> AU has not offered but might soon and would be in his top group
3* S Jamien Sherwood --> AU/FSU/UF/MIA battle with more teams jumping in
3* CB Kendric Torain --> offered this month, Greg Brown recruitied him when at Mizzou

Lots of battles right now that I not sure on. Not as confident on Copeland, Ross, Miller, Martin and Joiner as I was last month but feel better about Tindall, Mason & Wonnum. Seth Williams is a big wildcard imo. Likes love we showing right now but I think minute Bama makes him a priority he lands there

Trailing

5* QB Justin Fields --> AU recently offered, his commitment to PSU is shaky, Gators early favorites to flip but AU/UGA coming strong
4* OG Trey Hill --> AU probably running #3 behind CLEM & UGA
4* LB JJ Peterson --> clicked with Travis Williams but Bama the team to beat
4* OT William Barnes --> Gators are team to beat, AU/UNC chasing
4* CB Christian Tutt --> not sure AU really in this race
4* WR Anthony Schwartz --> bumped to 4* after ESPN updates, UF/MIA might be top 2 with AU running 3rd
4* DT Alfred Thomas --> AU still hasn't offered so UGA is team to beat
4* RB Damien Pierce --> Commitment might not be solid to Bama, UGA probalby #2 but AU in that next group
3* LB Michael Harris --> Heavy OHST lean, loves T-WILL though
3* OT John Campbell --> MIA/UF battle, haven't heard AU with him in awhile
3* CB Jaycee Horn --> seems to be trending to Bama
3* DT Jalen Cunningham --> recently landed AU offer but Tide will be hard to beat
3* QB Jarren Williams --> AU evaluating this week could become a target soon

The Fields angle is really interesting. Sounds like with offer we immediately tied UGA for 3rd. Gators pushing hardest right now but if we get em on campus anything can happen. Everyone keeps listing us with Hill but I think that's a Clemson/UGA battle though could change if he visits for BCW next month

Class Prediction

Let me repeat that NSD is a very long ways and this is all guesswork at this point. Don't take this as gospel just my best guess right now. Also I expect a few of these guys rankings to rise (Fox, Teague, Wire & Jibunor specifically)

4* QB Joey Gatewood (Commit)
3* QB Gerry Bohanon --> I think Fields flips to UF and we push for Bohanon
3* RB Master Teague --> Not gonna lie I want him the most so could be bias but I think instate guys go elsewhere and we push
3* RB Shaun Shivesr (Commit)
4* TE Tyneil Hopper
4* WR Justyn Ross --> not confident at all in this but hey it's May
4* WR Matthew Hill
3* WR Shedrick Jackson
3* WR Kolbi Fuqua (Commit)
4* OT Dylan Wonnum --> Irvin the difference here
3* OT Cameron Wire --> LSU passes and AU in need of a OT
3* OG/C Jalil Irvin (Commit)
3* OT/OG Kameron Stutts (Commit)
4* DE/DT Daquan Newkirk (Commit)
4* DT Alfred Thomas --> I still think he eventually gets offer but my confidence is fading
3* DE/BUCK Andres Fox
3* Buck/LB Richard Jibunor

4* LB Channing Tindall --> T-WILL gets it done
4* LB Zakoby McClain
4* CB Jalyn Armour-Davis
3* CB Juanyeh Thomas
4* S Quindarious Monday
4* S Myles Mason --> Askew part 2

Class Score: 256.99 (9-14)

Nice write up IMO.

Five-star receiver Justyn Ross of Phenix City (Ala.), one of Auburn's top overall targets, has released his first official list of top schools.

And, it's a lengthy one.

According to Ross, these 11 programs made his cut: Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Florida, FSU, LSU, Miami, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Ole Miss and Southern California.

The 6-feet-4, 197-pound Ross is the No. 5 receiver and No. 28 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite.

He's No. 1 for 2018 in the state of Alabama.

Already this year, Ross has visited Auburn four times. Many consider Auburn, Alabama and Clemson to be the front-runners from the above group.

Ross does not plan to announce a commitment until after the season, but has admitted that is fluid. His mother is serving in the Middle East and expects to return home in June. After she does, he'd like to visit many of his top schools with her to further narrow things down.

We are more than nine months from National Signing Day 2018, which is Feb. 7. So yes, this is projection of the next Auburn recruiting class is way too early. But is it really?

The list below contains 23 prospects, and it doesn’t include potential special teams additions, either kicker or more likely punter. This will be a fluid list as Auburn continues to use the evaluation period to grade targets and decide which prospects will receive the most recruiting pressure.

This list should give readers an idea of Tigers recruiters’ top targets at this time, as well as prospects who we think are likely to land in the 2018 class.

If this class were to come to fruition, it would have a 255.25 composite score from 247Sports rankings, which would’ve finished ninth in the 2017 recruiting cycle — exactly where Auburn ended with its 255.97 score.

A prospect with an asterisk next to his name is already committed to the Tigers.

Quarterback (1)

4-star QB Joey Gatewood*, Bartram Trail (Jacksonville, Fla.): Auburn doesn’t have anything to worry about here. Gatewood has quickly become the vocal leader of the class and is actively recruiting for the Tigers’ 2018 class.

Running back (3)

4-star RB Asa Martin, Austin (Decatur, Ala.): He still lists Florida as his No. 1 — and Alabama just offered him as an athlete — but Auburn made major strides with Martin at its spring game. In-state pull ultimately will be too much for Florida to overcome, and Martin’s relationship with Tigers players will make Auburn the choice.

4-star RB Harold Joiner, Mountain Brook (Birmingham, Ala.): Joiner could play about five different positions if coaches asked him to. For Auburn, Joiner would be a hybrid RB/TE/WR, which is what we think Joiner will decide is the best fit for his versatile skill set. LSU is the team to beat for now.

3-star RB Shaun Shivers*, Chaminade-Madonna Prep (Hollywood, Fla.): Shivers shows no sign of wavering, and we don’t expect that to change. He is helping recruit defensive back Keontra Smith, a high school teammate and 2019 recruiting class prospect.

I don't think we'll land either of Martin or Joiner, but as of right now I don't think either one is headed to Auburn.

Wide receiver (4)

4-star WR Matthew Hill, Brookwood (Snellville, Ga.): Hill grew up an Auburn fan in an Auburn fan family. He is high on Auburn and the Tigers have made his priority at wide receiver clear. Other schools can’t decide if he’s a receiver or a defensive back. Hill has a high chance of being one of the next guys to commit.

4-star WR Seth Williams, Paul W. Bryant (Cottondale, Ala.): Will Auburn grab a wide receiver out of Tuscaloosa’s backyard? I like the Tigers’ chances, especially if Auburn isn’t able to land Justyn Ross (as this projection suggests). Williams is a big-bodied option who catches everything that comes his way.

3-star ATH Kolbi Fuqua*, Cordova (Ala.): Fuqua is Auburn’s lone wide receiver commit so far. While he could project as a defensive back, we’ll leave him at receiver for his projection.

3-star WR Shedrick Jackson, Hoover (Birmingham, Ala.): It’s hard to envision Bo Jackson’s nephew playing anywhere other than Auburn, no matter what he says about taking his own path. Jackson will continue to climb the recruiting rankings.

No Justyn Ross.

3-star TE Zach Sheffer, Nease (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.): Sheffer fits into Auburn’s new prototypical tight end look. Position coach Larry Porter visited Sheffer’s school earlier this week. The Tigers took John Samuel Shenker in the 2017 cycle, and Sheffer would serve a similar purpose in the 2018 class.

I think they are after Tyneil Hopper too.

Offensive line (4)

4-star OG Jalil Irvin*, Stephenson (Stone Mountain, Ga.): Irvin continues to be the centerpiece of Auburn’s offensive line class. He could play center or guard for the Tigers for many years to come.

4-star OL Dylan Wonnum, Tucker (Ga.): Wonnum and Irvin grew up best friends and have talked at length about playing together in college. Wonnum has been a regular at the Plains over the past two years. While Auburn has work to do to land Wonnum, the Irvin factor will help.

3-star OG Kameron Stutts*, Brooks (Killen Ala.): Stutts’ spring game commitment added another massive human being to the 2018 recruiting class. He quickly became another vocal leader and a regular Twitter recruiting presence.

3-star OT Jerome Carvin, Cordova (Tenn.): Carvin attended the Auburn and Alabama spring games. A Memphis-area product, Carvin will likely strongly consider both programs. He told SEC Country earlier this week that Auburn is a school he’ll be “strongly considering” all the way through his process.

The only guy we are after is Carvin, but I don't think he can commit right now.

Defensive line (4)

4-star DE Daquan Newkirk*, Mississippi Gulf Coast (JUCO): Newkirk will suit up for the Tigers after a long process stemming from his 2016 signing with Auburn. He will be a versatile end/tackle option.

4-star DE Andres Fox, Mobile Christian (Mobile, Ala.): As noted a few times last week, Auburn is the team to beat for Fox despite the fact he grew up a huge Alabama fan. Fox fits into the Tigers’ Buck defensive end needs. Several of the state’s prospects told me last week they believe Fox is one of the five best players in the state.

3-star OLB Richard Jibunor, Athens Christian (Athens, Ga.): The best story of the 2018 class goes to Jibunor who evaded a religious crisis in Nigeria. Little did he know that move would turn him into one of college football’s most coveted defensive prospects. He has major love for linebackers coach Travis Williams and defensive line/associate head coach Rodney Garner. We expect those connections will elevate Auburn over Alabama, Notre Dame, Florida, Tennessee and others.

Unranked DT Allen Love, Huffman (Birmingham, Ala.): Here’s probably the biggest surprise of the list. Love hasn’t gained a ton of traction through recruiting, but that will change this spring. Mark our words. Lovee picked up a Louisville offer this week. More will come. He visited Auburn a handful of times just since last football season, so don’t be surprised if this under-the-radar prospect lands with the Tigers.

So this is a good news, bad news type deal. They don't have Coynis Miller in the class, but they do have Andres Fox.

At the end of the day who do we need more?

4-star LB Zakoby McClain, Valdosta (Ga.): McClain listed Auburn as his No. 1 school when he last visited, and there hasn’t been anything happen since that makes us think he’ll end up anywhere other than Auburn. The Tigers are in good shape for this sideline-to-sideline linebacker.

4-star LB Quay Walker, Crisp County (Cordele, Ga.): Yes, he listed Alabama as his favorite recently, but we also know his priority at Auburn and his relationship with high school teammate and Tigers signee Markaviest Bryant will go a long way. A lot will happen between now and Walker’s commitment, but Auburn should feel cautiously optimistic about Walker until he says otherwise.
