BOL thinks Alabama leads for Clay Webb. The staff likes him as a Center even though he is ranked as a Guard.

VIP update on 2019 Clay Webb from Bama side. Web says despite his numerous other offers he really likes AU/Bama so far and has them at even on his list. Visited them last Friday and says "it's gonna be real hard to turn them down". He has a good relationship with Bama OL coach Brent Key. Also sounds like Saban is playing a major role in his recruitment. He sat down with Webb on his visit then came out to see his wrestling match. Plans to visit UGA for spring game (I think that's a win for us). Wants to announce his senior season

Also a VIP update on 4* S Myles Mason. So apparently Mason is cousin's with 2017 signee Jordyn Peters. Apparently they met for first time on recruiting trip last year and have stared getting closer. They worked out together this week. They have talked some about being teammates at next level and both like idea of it. Mason has a top 5 and claims they are all even: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State & LSU. Though AU/Bama are recruiting him the hardest. He wants to commit this summer but only if he feels confident in decision. He speak a lot with Rodney Garner his area recruiter and his talks with DB coach Greg Brown have amped up. Brown's message is we are losing a bunch of DBs after this year so there will be clear opportunity to get on field early. Mason plans to be back for Big Cat Weekend

Also from the Auburn thread:

quote:

Keith Niebuhr also put up a recruiting insider late last night:

- Martin said what KN expected he would yesterday saying Florida leads but AU is a close 2nd. He was close to committing to Florida before A-Day visit but now it's too close for him to pull the trigger either way. The big part for AU is getting his mom on board and sounds like she starting to warm up to AU. He will be back for Big Cat Weekend. KN says if he still has UF ahead after that visit probably a pretty big sign that Tigers aren't catching Gators, so we will see

- 2019 QB Bo Nix still claims he is open to everyone despite being an AU legacy. He's trying to put aside his youth fandom of Auburn and make best decision for himself. KN thinks he's still a year or so away from making a commitment. A big plus besides NIx's fandom is AU's system under Lindsey, it's similar to what he will run in high school and he thinks he fits well. An important note for AU is even though he couldn't make it to A-Day the rest of his family was there. KN still thinks he lands at AU

- 2019 OT Pierce Quick is a top target for AU and has nice things to say about the Tigers but his family is all bammers and KN thinks he's a lock to the Tide. Personally I think he commits to Bama this weekend at spring game

- 4* DT Coynis Miiller is AU's clear top DT target. This is a battle though and not just an instate one. Miller really likes LSU and Florida could be a player as well along with Clemson. Someone close to Miller told KN that he thinks LSU is a bigger player than people realize and it's clear he's not a lock to stay instate. Expect this recruitment to take awhile as he wants to use all 5 official visits and is in no hurry to make decision. KN says he's actually adding more teams than really narrowing things down right now. Good news for AU is he still considers our offer his first big offer and KN still thinks it will come down to AU or Bama.

- KN says AU is making some progress on 4* S Myles Mason. The question though is where does Mason sit on Auburn & Alabama's board. That could play a major factor. AU coaching staff plans to visit his school soon and Mason plans to be back on campus for Big Cat Weekend. KN thinks if Bama pushes they probably get em but not very clear right now. Mason hopes to announce this summer

- It sounds like LSU is team to beat for 4* RB Harold Joiner. The main reason is they are selling him hard on just being a RB which he wants. Both AU & Bama are recruiting him as an athlete. KN says he sounded almost lukewarm on the instate teams. He said for AU he is concerned about OL. Honestly it sounds like he's bought everything Oregeron has sold so will be interesting to see if on field results change his mind. Texas is a darkhorse team as Joiner plans to visit them and A&M soon.

- AU is recruiting 4* WR Seth Williams the hardest and he says he is closest to Kodi Burns. Williams high school coach says he has been impressed with how Burns has recruited Williams and thinks it could play a factor. However, Bama is starting to ramp up their recruitment and Bama campus on 15 minutes away. He was much closer though with previous Bama coaches so sounds like AU has capitalized on that opportunity. Still this will be a hard battle for AU to win, it could though come down to who wants him more

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. Today, we discuss the latest with 5-star wide receiver Justyn Ross and the state of Alabama’s top running back, Asa Martin.

Daboll’s first task with Justyn Ross resonates with 5-star prospect

PHENIX CITY, Ala. — During one of the first conversations Brian Daboll had with 5-star wide receiver Justyn Ross, the new offensive coordinator made sure to get Charay Franklin’s number.

Franklin is Ross’ mother, but she hasn’t gone on any recruiting trips with him yet. That’s because she’s stationed in Kuwait with the National Guard as a truck driver, and shortly after getting deployed, Ross’ recruitment really took off. Franklin hasn’t been kept out of the loop on her son’s recruitment, even though she’s across the globe.

“We talk about it all of the time,” Ross told SEC Country. “Whenever I go on a visit, she always asks me what I liked about it. I always tell her how much I like the environment and how much I like being around the people.”

Ross only mentioned Alabama and Florida State as the schools who have consistently talked to his mother. That’s important because he says he doesn’t need to go into too much detail on those 2 schools when he talks to her about them because she already knows what their message is to him.

Both Derrick Ansley, who is Ross’ primary recruiter, and Daboll have talked to Franklin.

“When (Daboll) got there, he was asking me about my background,” Ross said. “I told him that my mom was overseas and he said he wanted to communicate to her.

“That’s really important. I want her to be comfortable with the school I pick, too. Her getting a good relationship with the coaches is very important to me.”

One of the reasons why Ross is waiting until National Signing Day to make his commitment is because he wants to take his mother on several recruiting trips before making a commitment. He admits that not only does he need to be comfortable with the school he picks, but she needs to be as well.

Alabama, Auburn, Florida State and Clemson have been the schools he’s felt comfortable at since he became a national recruit. Clemson is the latest school to host Ross on a visit and there’s no doubt that the Tigers made an impression on him.

Shortly after the visit, Ross tweeted that the visit was one of the best he’s ever been on.

“I liked it a lot,” Ross said. “Their facilities are like a dream. The coaches are really nice, too. I can relate to them a lot. I just wanted to see how they act around me and see if it feels like home there.”

The only other time he’s had that reaction to a visit was the first time he went to Florida State.

There are several people around the state of Alabama who believe that Ross’ recruitment is strictly an Iron Bowl battle, but that’s not the case at all. Clemson and Florida State are true threats to pluck away one of the best prospects in the nation from either Alabama or Auburn.

Why Asa Martin feels like he doesn’t fit in with Alabama

DECATUR, Ala. — Asa Martin is one of the nation’s top 10 running backs and the highest-ranked tailback in the state of Alabama in the Class of 2018, but it’s highly unlikely he’ll end up with the Crimson Tide.

Florida currently leads for the 4-star prospect, with Auburn running in second place. Daboll has reached out to Martin since arriving in Tuscaloosa. Daboll told Martin multiple times that he wanted him to visit when the prospect had his spring break, but Martin couldn’t make it.

It’s not likely he makes it to Tuscaloosa in the near future. The interest level in Alabama isn’t very high.

“I just don’t really know. … I just don’t think it really fits my style very much,” Martin told SEC Country. “The style of running back I am, I don’t really feel like I fit into that style of offense.

“I’m more like of an open-type, shotgun offense. Spread style.”

Alabama has a commitment from 4-star running back Dameon Pierce in the Class of 2018. The Tide would like to add 5-star prospect Zamir White, too, but it’s unlikely he ends up committing to Alabama when he makes his decision this June. If the Tide miss on him, it’s unclear if and who they’ll go after. Running back isn’t a priority to Alabama this year after signing 2 of the nation’s best last cycle in Najee Harris and Brian Robinson. Both players have been 2 of the best standouts in spring practice.

I'm guessing Mr. Martin hasn't watched our offense in about 9 years.

Besides, Martin transferred out of IMG due to Trey Sanders becoming the every down back. If he can't handle competition in high school then he sure as shite can't handle competition in college.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Day 2 on the road took us from Huntsville back through Birmingham to Montgomery.

Alabama recruiting reporter Chris Kirschner and Auburn recruiting reporter Benjamin Wolk saw a quartet of prospects in north Alabama before heading back through Birmingham for another set of interviews in that athletic hub. It won’t be the last swing through Birmingham before the trip is complete.

Madison County running back Tae Provens and Madison County linebacker Matthew Flint were the first visits. Both have family ties to Auburn and heavy interest in the Tigers. Lee defensive end Malik Langham is a fast-rising prospect on Alabama and Auburn recruiting boards. Austin running back Asa Martin, who has a good chance of landing at Auburn, is one of the top offensive prospects in the state.

In Birmingham, we saw a handful of prospects — Bo Nix, Pierce Quick and Paul Tyson — all likely to land at Auburn or Alabama in the 2018 and 2019 classes. The only pre-planned visit we weren’t able to make was to see defensive lineman Jalen Cunningham, but we’ll touch base with him at the end of the week when we return to Birmingham, along with Myles Mason, Coynis Miller and Taulia Tagovailoa.

Check out the quick-hitters of what we learned from these prospects. Come back later in the week for more detailed updates from all of them.

Programming note: We will be in the Montgomery area Tuesday before heading to Mobile to chat with the top prospects on the south side of the state.

3-star RB Tae Provens, Madison County

Wolk: Provens is an interesting case. His communication with Auburn has tapered since he visited for junior day earlier this year. Tennessee has been in contact the most. The Volunteers are a clear-cut leader right now.

As for Auburn, it’ll be interesting to track how much love they show Provens during the evaluation period. The Tigers already have running back commit Shaun Shivers. Targets Asa Martin and Harold Joiner could be getting more attention from Auburn right now. As those recruitments work themselves out, don’t be surprised if Provens leaps up Auburn’s interest list, which could alter the course of his decision.

3-star OLB Matthew Flint, Madison County

Wolk: For starters, Flint gave a “War Eagle” when we got to Madison County on Tuesday. He didn’t shy away from his love for the Tigers and went so far to say — just as he did at junior day — that Auburn is his favorite program at this time.

Tennessee offered within the last five days, so the Volunteers certainly have a chance to enter the picture. Ole Miss is another program that will give Auburn a run. Flint revealed that [LB coach] Travis Williams told him Auburn plans to take two linebackers, so he knows vacancies are slim. Williams pushed him to commit earlier. Now Auburn is taking a more patient approach to linebackers.

3-star DE Malik Langham, Lee

Kirschner: Tennessee has made Langham feel like a priority by reaching out almost every single day. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound prospect said he hears from Tennessee, Georgia and Vanderbilt the most. The in-state schools haven’t offered yet, but both Alabama and Auburn staffs have told Langham that they will be by Lee High School this spring to evaluate him further. If either school offers, Langham said it would be hard for any school outside the Yellowhammer State to get his commitment.

Wolk: Langham still doesn’t have offers from Auburn and Alabama, but he has visited both — along with several other SEC programs — over the last few months. He was in Tuscaloosa as recently as last week. Langham went to Auburn earlier in the spring for junior day. Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and Auburn running backs coach Tim Horton have been his main points of contact at each school, so it’s mostly been area recruiters, not position coaches, contacting him. Langham said that, as a kid from the state of Alabama, offers from either of those programs would change the way he views his recruitment. Georgia and Tennessee are in good position right now, however.

4-star RB Asa Martin, Austin

Kirschner: Florida still leads for the state of Alabama’s best running back, but after a recent trip to Auburn, the Tigers have closed the gap on the Gators. Martin admits, when he was last in Gainesville, commitment was on his mind. He has a very close relationship with Florida running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider. Martin is planning to visit Texas who recently offered. He says the Longhorns, depending on the visit, could make things interesting. Outside of those three schools, there is a wide gap between the rest.

Wolk: The No. 1 running back in the state of Alabama isn’t guaranteed to stay in-state, but Auburn is going to make it hard. On his Florida visit last month, Martin said he was as close to committing as he’d ever been. The Gators jumped out to the No. 1 spot, and while that hasn’t changed, Martin said Auburn has closed the gap almost entirely. His A-Day visit made him feel like Auburn might be the best place for him. Martin said Chip Lindsey, Gus Malzahn and Tim Horton have made a serious effort to build a relationship with his mother, which is something that had Florida holding a major edge over the rest of his suitors. Right now, it looks like it’ll be an Auburn-Florida battle until the end, which will likely come just before the start of Martin’s senior season. There are a few programs — Texas, Texas A&M and Nebraska — that could make Martin re-evalutate once he’s able to take visits to those places.

4-star 2019 QB Bo Nix, Pinson Valley

Kirschner: For only being a sophomore in high school, Nix knows how to answer questions from reporters like he’s already in college. Nix isn’t going to give off too many clues on where his recruitment stands, but it seems like Auburn, Alabama and Clemson have caught his eye. Nix won’t make a decision anytime soon, but I think in the end, he’ll end up at one of those three schools.

Wolk: You’ve probably heard: Nix’s father, Patrick, led Auburn to an undefeated season in 1993. Bo Nix has made it quite clear — while he grew up an Auburn fan — his father’s connection to the university won’t be the be-all-end-all for his decision. Nix has liked all the SEC programs he has visited, including Auburn, Alabama and Georgia. He wants to visit LSU. Clemson and Oklahoma are the most likely non-SEC schools to garner Nix’s interest. Still, Nix feels like he’s about a year away from making a permanent college decision. Of note: Patrick Nix said he thinks Bo has the chance to be even better than he was, which is something that will drop the jaw of many in the Auburn fan base.

4-star 2019 OL Pierce Quick, Hewitt-Trussville

Kirschner: Alabama is the clear leader for Quick. Not only did he grow up an Alabama fan, but so did every single person in his family. The Crimson Tide are recruiting Quick the hardest from offensive line coach Brent Key to Nick Saban himself. When asked to put a percentage to Alabama’s lead, he said the Tide are at 100 percent and the Auburn Tigers are at 70 percent. I can’t see any school not named Alabama getting his commitment when he does decide. He did not rule out a potential commitment this weekend when he’s in Tuscaloosa for A-Day.

Wolk: Quick’s No. 1 is Alabama. He grew up an Alabama fan. His whole family went to and cheers for Alabama. The Crimson Tide are prioritizing Quick to the point it’ll be nearly impossible for any school to pick him away. In fact, Quick said he’s almost felt compelled to commit to the Crimson Tide on a few occasions. He’ll be back in Tuscaloosa for A-Day, but he doesn’t know if the commitment will come yet. What’s holding him back? Auburn. Quick said the Tigers are a clear No. 2 and the family feel has made him step back to re-assess. Gus Malzahn and Herb Hand showed Quick and Clay Webb major love during the A-Day spring game, and they’ve told the Austin Troxell story of an Alabama-fan offensive linemen choosing the Tigers over the Tide. Still, it’s tough to see Quick anywhere other than Tuscaloosa.

Unranked 2019 QB Paul Tyson, Hewitt-Trussville

Kirschner: Tyson has obvious connections to Alabama through his great-grandfather who is legendary Alabama coach Bear Bryant. Tyson maintains that, even if Alabama extended a scholarship his way, he will not commit immediately to the Tide.

Not only does he like Alabama, but he really likes Notre Dame and Clemson, as well. All three staffs have told him that they’ll be by Hewitt-Trussville this spring to evaluate him. Because of Hewitt-Trussville’s offense, and with it being one of the best football programs in the state, I expect Tyson’s recruitment to heat up in the leading weeks and months.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Not a day goes by that there isn’t chatter surrounding Kelvin Joseph and his commitment to LSU.

Joseph is the No. 2 overall recruit in Louisiana and No. 6 cornerback in the 2018 recruiting class. He is the Tigers’ longest-tenured commit in LSU’s class after giving his verbal to Les Miles last February at “Boys From The Boot.”

Fast forward 14 months, and Joseph has gained acclaim as an Under Armour All-American and “The Opening” finalist. His offer sheet reflects as much, with SEC West rivals Alabama and Texas A&M each working hard to flip the Baton Rouge native.

Somehow, someway, LSU has held onto its lead for the prized corner. That’s a credit to an aggressive approach from defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, who is in daily communication with not only Joseph, but his mother, father and Scotlandville (La.) High School coaches about the priority recruit.

“Everything is going good,” Joseph told SEC Country. “My relationship with (Raymond) is good. We’re in touch every day. He told me that I’m his guy and he needs me there, and it feels good to be their main priority.”

Joseph’s comments came at the Pylon 7-on-7 Invitational in Miami this past weekend, an event where the LSU commit wore a crimson Alabama T-shirt. He paired that with purple LSU shades that he rocked while playing safety and nickel corner for the Louisiana Bootleggers.

As far as the mixing and matching attire, the usually stoic Joseph laughed: “That’s just fashion.”

Joseph, who measures at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, is cognizant of the rumors swirling about his recruitment and the notion of a possible de-commitment or flip.

On Christmas, he made it clear that he was still firm in his pledge to LSU but he was open to being recruited by other schools.

The 4-star Baton Rouge corner has made several visits to campuses across the country this spring, including Alabama, Miami and several stops at nearby LSU. The visits should be taken as just that — visits — and the whispers on a major decision regarding his recruitment are perhaps overblown.

“I don’t know, but if I do I would’ve done it around the springtime. I probably would have done it already,” Joseph admitted.

The fact that Joseph didn’t is a positive sign for LSU and its chances of holding onto the prized corner, who also boasts the ability to work at both strong and free safety.

Joseph is joined by defensive backs Nadab Joseph, Caden Sterns and Ar’Darius Washington in the Tigers’ 2018 class, and with 13 commits LSU is holding tight to the nation’s No. 4 recruiting class and tops in the SEC. That’s an encouraging sign for Joseph, who is impressed by his future teammates. He’s hoping to see even more Louisiana natives follow suit.

“I like it. They’re building a powerhouse,” Joseph said of LSU’s class. “Everybody I talk to, I would want to be on the same team as them. Louisiana has a bunch of talent, so I want more Louisianimals. It doesn’t matter who they are, as long as they’re from Louisiana.”

Another factor that has helped LSU hold onto Joseph is the relationship he has with another fellow defensive back commit. Nadab Joseph committed to LSU 4 months after Kelvin did, and the 2 have forged a unique relationship over the past year.

Both Josephs are among the top prospects at their position and both are projected to man outside corner spots in the Tigers secondary. That should spell trouble for opposing teams when Kelvin and Nadab arrive on campus in a few months.

“We’re cool. We have the same last name, and that’s good,” Joseph laughed. “Those other teams ain’t going to have nowhere to throw, either.”

Zamir White has no doubt reached the smothering stage of his college recruiting.

That’s to be expected given the North Carolina product’s status as the nation’s No. 1 RB for 2018. White has been a priority for college football’s elite since his sophomore season in 2015.

At that time, Georgia’s running backs coach (Thomas Brown) told the Scotland County coaching staff that White rated higher than any back the Bulldogs liked in 2016 or 2017.

He took a visit to Columbus last weekend for Ohio State’s spring game. Yet by now the nation’s No. 4 overall prospect is at a point where everything just snowballs. The Ohio State writers want to know about the visit. That’s the writers for all the major recruiting services. There are at least 3-4 major services there.

The Ohio State writers want to know about the visit. That’s the 3-4 writers for all the major recruiting services.

Folks have jobs to do. Stories to write.

The demands get multiplied. Clemson’s writers want an update for those fans. The same goes for Alabama, Georgia and even his home state Tar Heels.

Did any seismic changes occur? Where do things stand?

Think “Groundhog Day” every week for a high school kid. Don’t expect many extended interview sessions with White going forward.

Everyone wants this week’s answer. But his decision isn’t set to come until late June. That decision date will honor his mother’s birthday.

White is a nice and a shy kid. He’s a pleaser. But this has to be daunting. Especially when one visit and any statements he makes creates a deluge of at least 20-25 interview requests.

This is the time of year when those that know and care about him do not ask him about schools. That’s something to bear in mind when wishing there was more information regarding his current mindset.

Reporters could trek up to Laurinburg and stake out the fieldhouse. That’s one way to find out what he’s thinking right now.

But that’s no way to go about covering a prospect of White’s stature long-term. That’s also a great way to poison an interview before the first question gets asked.

Here’s what DawgNation does know about White:

- When he went up to Columbus last week, a well-placed source told me Georgia appeared to be in the lead. The not-quite 6-foot-1 junior tipped the scales at 220 pounds in Columbus.

- He still has not made a decision about whether or not to attend the Alabama or Georgia spring game this Saturday.

- Ohio State had work to do to with White. The Buckeyes did make a move, but it remains to be seen just how big of an impact that visit had on White and his entire family. It is no stretch to think the Buckeyes might now be right behind UGA.

- This decision has not been finalized.

- Georgia has recruited and continues to recruit White harder than any other school.

Chris Smith sets up his Super 6

I consider Hapeville Charter cornerback Chris Smith to be as good as any cornerback in the state this year.

Michigan commit Myles Sims might have a slight edge because of size, but there’s no difference between Smith and what 4-star Christian Tutt can do for any big-time SEC secondary.

Smith rates as a 3-star prospect and as the state’s No. 46 overall prospect but he’s in my Georgia Top 20 for sure. He’s also gotten closer to his decision.

The not-quite 5-foot-11 prospect shared his Top 6 via Twitter yesterday. It reflected progress. Smith was only looking at cutting his 30-plus offers down to a Top 12 a few weeks ago.

What’s the read here? I think Georgia has made up some ground but there’s no clear leader. Or even a behind-the-scenes one.

Smith has also just made a substantial tour of schools over the last few weeks and camped, too. Alabama, Michigan and South Carolina all have very good shots here.

The Hapeville Charter standout will be at G-Day this Saturday. That will give the Bulldogs a chance to continue climbing.
