Here's the Clemson mod's reasoning behind CBing Justyn Ross to Clemson:

quote:

247Sports Composite five-star wide receiver Justyn Ross has long been pegged to land at either Auburn or Alabama. But Clemson is now in that conversation.

And not just because the Tigers crushed the visit on Tuesday, his first time on campus, or because of Clemson's recenty history of pulling elite wide receivers out of SEC territory.

In talking to some people, the Phenix City (Ala.) Central product isn't an "Iron Bowl or bust" type of prospect. He's open to other suitors, which he's voiced on social media on more than one occasion within the past month.

Ross didn't grow up a die-hard fan of one in-state program over the other. In the past he's cited different family members with respective allegiances to Auburn or Alabama.

His school, too, has sent football prospects to both schools in recent years, so it's not considered primarily a pipeline for one of the in-state schools over the other.

Moreover, Ross has only attended football games at Bryant-Denny and Jordan-Hare; in other words, he hasn't fully tapped into what else is on the table.

If playing basketball in college ever presents itself as an opportunity, that could add an interesting element.

His mom, liked Clemson247 has detailed in the past, is currently serving overseas in Kuwait as a truck driver with the National Guard. She's expected back in the United States this summer.

Ross wants to wait to narrow his list or make a decision before she returns.

He tagged Trevor Lawrence and Xavier Thomas in a tweet following his visit to campus yesterday. He tweeted: "I can honestly say that today was one of the best visits I've ever been on."

Considering Ross has been to Auburn at least four times, that's quite a statement to make.

I've never seen someone come up with some many far fetched conclusions to justify putting in a CB.

But he tweeted he had a great time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pleasant Grove's Myles Mason seems like a recruit who has seen all he needs to see at the top five schools he's considering.

But Mason, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound four-star recruit who will likely play safety at the next level but could get a look at receiver, isn't ready to commit just yet.

"Hopefully this summer," Mason said Saturday after Auburn's A-Day game when asked about a decision timetable. "Just whenever I feel the time is right."

Mason currently has a top five of Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Florida State and Clemson, but said he'd like to get to Georgia soon. He has visited his top five schools this spring. Perhaps a trip to Georgia could give Mason more to think about.

Mason, who also plans to visit Alabama soon possibly for its A-Day game on April 22, said Alabama and Auburn are currently recruiting him the hardest now.

Mason said he was happy with how Auburn's defense played in Saturday's scrimmage, and talked more in-depth with secondary coach Greg Brown.

"His experience in the NFL (stands out)," Mason said. "When I went in the meeting room, he showed me some stuff on tape that shows me he knows what he's talking about."

Mason lives closer to Tuscaloosa than Auburn, but the Auburn coaches aren't conceding Mason to Alabama by any stretch. Mason earned most of his big offers before his sophomore season in high school.

"I have a good relationship with the coaches (at Auburn)," Mason said. "The coaches have always kept it real with me."

Mason plays on both sides of the ball for Pleasant Grove. He had 84 tackles on defense as a junior.

Coynis Miller is making his case to be the state's top defensive prospect, and the Jackson-Olin defensive end has spent plenty of time at Auburn and Alabama lately.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound Miller was at Auburn's A-Day game on Saturday. During his spring break, he spent three nights at Auburn and attended practice at Alabama.

Miller said he was pleased to see Auburn's defense "getting after it" during A-Day, and is working on building relationships with all of Auburn's coaches, not just defensive line coach Rodney Garner.

"Just the coaches and the players, they're down to earth," Miller said. "They treat me like family.

"One thing that (stood out during the 3-day trip), (head) Coach (Gus) Malzahn came and got me and put me on the field right behind him. I got to see the plays up close, seeing how they're supposed to go and execute it."

Miller also saw Alabama practice, and plans to be at Alabama's A-Day game on April 22. After that, he plans to just "chill for a while" before Jackson-Olin starts spring practice.

"Just the intensity of their practices (stood out), just moving around, being where they're supposed to be," Miller said of Alabama.

Miller was asked Saturday in a group interview setting which defensive linemen he looks at as a possible model for his game.

"I like to look at (Alabama's) Da'Ron Payne," Miller said. "He's a leader who puts the team in the right position I try to look at him. I look at other people like (Alabama's) Quinnen Williams."

When asked which Auburn players he looks at, he said, "I like to look at Derrick Brown. When I go off to college, we'll be playing the same position. I look at Marlon Davidson. I just like the way he plays."

Miller was an Alabama fan growing up, but is focused on making the right business decision for college. His friend and teammate T.D. Moultry signed with Auburn in February and was at the spring game.

"He probably wants me to come play (with him at Auburn), but he hasn't said anything," Miller said. "When me and him talk, it's just normal conversation."

Miller said right now, his top schools include Alabama, Auburn, LSU, Georgia and probably Ole Miss, but in no order. He's planning on visiting Florida this summer.

Moultry committed to Auburn in May of last year, but Miller said he'll wait until after the season.

Ross the latest to fall in love with Clemson

Clemson is the hottest school in the recruiting world.

The Tigers have commitments from the nation’s Nos. 1 and 2 players in the country in 5-star quarterback Trevor Lawrence and defensive end Xavier Thomas. Clemson also has an excellent chance at landing the No. 3 player in the country in 5-star running back Zamir White, who’s scheduled to make his commitment on June 27; the nation’s 1 offensive tackle Jackson Carman listed Clemson as his No. 1 school just two weeks ago after his first ever visit there; and most believe the Tigers will land 5-star defensive end KJ Henry.

Now, 5-star wide receiver Justyn Ross, who’s from Central High School in Phenix City, Ala., is the latest highly ranked recruit to fall in love with the school after one trip there.

That second tweet is Ross quote tweeting 5-star linebacker Teradja Mitchell, another Alabama target, who will visit Clemson on April 22.

There’s no doubt that the Tigers have loads of momentum on the recruiting trail after beating the Crimson Tide in the national championship and building one of the most insane athletic facilities in the country. Combine that with coach Dabo Swinney, who recruits all rave about, and you have a successful product to sell the best high school football players in the country.

Now, do I think Alabama has to worry about Clemson when it comes time for Ross to make his commitment? Sure. But, I still believe it’s going to be hard for any school outside the state of Alabama to get his commitment because of the amount of times he’s been to both schools. It should be noted, though, there’s not much of a “closer to home” argument that can be made for Clemson and Alabama.

His mother, Charay Franklin, who is stationed in Kuwait with the National Guard where she’s a truck driver, will also play a big role in her son’s decision.

She’s been overseas since June and won’t return until the summer. She also hasn’t been able to go with her son on recruiting trips, but she’s still up to date on which schools her son is considering.

“She’s still in group text conversations with coaches, so she’s still very involved with my recruitment,” Ross told SEC Country in October. “She’s told me that when the day comes to commit that I’m going to be the one to make the decision and not her.”

Ross has told SEC Country that he won’t make a commitment before she returns home; and during our last interview, he planned to take his recruitment all of the way until National Signing Day. So, even if Clemson has some buzz around it with Ross, it will have to maintain the momentum until February.

What Alabama has going for it is familiarity. He’s been to Tuscaloosa numerous times and has a former teammate and close friend in Markail Benton, who was a part of the 2017 class, going there this summer.

“It’s just natural every time I go there,” Ross told SEC Country last month at the Atlanta regional for Nike’s Opening event. “I know everything about the school by now.”

He still needs to continue building his relationship with new wide receivers coach Mike Locksley and new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, but Ross talks to coach Nick Saban at least once every two weeks.

It’s no lock that Ross ends up in Crimson next season, but the good news is the nation’s No. 4 wide receiver will take plenty of visits to Tuscaloosa over the next several months. His next one is scheduled for A-Day next weekend.

Alabama in the top 5 for top 10 WR, but does it mean anything?

Jacob Copeland, the nation’s No. 9 wide receiver from Escambia High School (Pensacola, Fla.), released his top 6 Wednesday and Alabama, along with Auburn, Florida, Tennessee and Ole Miss, made the cut.

But does this list actually mean much?

Just this past weekend, Copeland told SEC Country’s Benjamin Wolk, who covers Auburn for us, that his decision was already down to Auburn and Florida and that he would commit to one of those two programs at the Under Armour All-America Game in January.

“When I show up at those campuses, I always feel love,” Copeland said. “I can do what I want. I don’t have to do this and that like other schools want me to do. I always come here and feel welcome, and I’m always welcome at Florida. Those two places I feel really good at and know I could live there for four to five years.”

Last month, Copeland told SEC Country that Alabama, after a visit there in late February for junior day, was rising on his list after not being in contention at all.

“It seems like they’re going to change the game up a little bit,” Copeland said. “We (him and Brian Daboll) chopped it up for a while when I was there and he said they want to pass the ball more this year. Usually, Alabama only focuses on one wide receiver, so I didn’t really have much interest in them. After talking to him, Alabama is getting back up there. I want to see what they look like throwing the ball this season.

“That was why I wasn’t really considering Alabama all that much. It didn’t make sense for me because there would always be a receiver who’s there that would be in front of me that they would focus on.”

Copeland claims that the change of heart from his comments on Auburn and Florida this past weekend stems from significant conversations with coaching staffs that he’s considering.

“I realized there are some coaches who really feel in their hearts to care about my career and life after football,” Copeland said in a statement.

Florida appears to have the edge in Copeland’s recruitment because he was the first recruit Jim McElwain offered when he became the coach of the Gators. Copeland has also told SEC Country that McElwain has said to him that he’s the No. 1 wide receiver he wants in the Class of 2018.

“I was the first recruit he offered,” Copeland said. “That was my freshman year and he’s been recruiting me heavy ever since. He told me I’m his biggest priority. He actually showed me his board and I was the No. 1 receiver on it.

“Coach Mac told me he’s going to stay on my trail and I’m going to look good in orange and blue. I communicate with coach Mac every day and a lot of the staff. They treat me like I’m theirs, like I’m already a player there.”

I fully expect Copeland to choose Florida when he announces his commitment at the Under Armour game.

J.T. Daniels is one of the top quarterbacks in the national 2019 class and will be in the running for top overall player in the region as a senior.

Daniels has been putting up video game numbers since he was a freshman and has a chance to break some historic records by the time he is done at Mater Dei. It's rare to find a quarterback with his natural ability to throw the football and his feel, timing and anticipation are well beyond his years.

On the recruiting front, Daniels is well past the double digit offer mark and had a chance to check out the Washington Huskies over the weekend.

"It was an amazing trip," Daniels said. "I think the things that stood out the most were the overall atmosphere there and the energy on the campus. Getting to know Coach (Chris) Petersen and Coach (Jonathan) Smith was a great experience as well, they're both great guys and I really enjoyed being around them.

"I was able to sit down and talk football with both of them. They're very bright guys with a lot of knowledge. I love the system they're in and they're definitely building something special there. Coach Smith is just a real genuine guy and everyone I met out there was first class so it was a great visit."

Over the last few years, several players we've talked to have commented on Coach Petersens life skills program and Daniels was no exception.

"I loved it," Daniels said. "Coach Petersen is about more than just producing great football players, he's trying to create great men. I really vibe with him well and this trip really impressed, even more than I expected it to. I was already giving UW a hard look but after this trip, I definitely see them as a place I could be very happy at."

Daniels will head South for his next visit.

"I'm going to Alabama next week and then Stanford on May 12," Daniels said. "I'm pumped up for both visits. Alabama is obviously a great program and I'm coming up with a couple of my teammates so that should be a lot of fun.

"I've liked Stanford for a while so I'm looking forward getting out there. Stanford hasn't offered yet, they do things a little differently there but I'm excited to visit and check the place out."

So it appears the QB we offered yesterday may be in play way more than I originally thought.

His high school coach is the same guy who coached Blake Sims.

Interesting.

RIVALS’ REACTION

Vann admitted that while June 26 is the planned commitment date, he is starting to feel a decision may come even sooner than that. With the Spring Evaluation Period starting up next week, then, these six schools have to assume they are making their final pitches in the coming weeks. Early in the process Notre Dame was a leader, but the Fighting Irish filled up at his position. Michigan State, which remains in contention, was also named as an early leader, but do not sleep on the hometown Cincinnati Bearcats. Vann seems to be buying into the vision new head coach Luke Fickell is presenting there.
