Ryan Bartow:

Cornerback Jhavonte Dean (Brenham, Tex./Blinn College) said Alabama still leads.

He visited Alabama last month and plans to return next Friday for a two-day trip.

"It was pretty nice," Dean said. "It was basically what I expected. The campus was what I expected. I felt like they really wanted me. Coach (Nick) Saban said I'm a priority. He told me everything they do there and how Alabama puts guys in the league."

Dean said he now plans to make a verbal commit before his season in 'late August or early September.'

I've logged the lone and first Crystal Ball pick in for Alabama.

Dean said he still hears from Cincinnati (who he signed with coming out of high school), Florida, TCU, Utah, Kentucky and UCF.

Dean will have three years to play two on the Division 1 level.

Dean has offers from Miami, Cincinnati, Oregon State, Alabama, Utah, TCU, Florida, Kentucky and UCF.

As a freshman, Dean recorded 18 tackles and 12 pass breakups in nine games.

Dean (6-2, 180) runs a 4.3-second 40-yard dash.

I feel fairly confident that the Finebaum thing was staged. Those two have a pretty good relationship.

Saban was truly pissed. Did you see the 3rd time Saban confronted Finebaum in the lobby?

If Saban had any respect for Finebaum, I believe it's down the drain now. Doubt Finebaum gets any extra interviews with Saban from now on.

He's gonna be a stud both on and off the field for us. He's the next Reuben Foster.

ETA: Not comparing their positions on the field, just their recruiting traits.

BEAVERTON, Ore. — Ohio State currently has the No. 1 recruiting class in the country, but don’t ask 4-star Alabama linebacker commit VanDarius Cowan about the Buckeyes.

Two words into a question about if he’s concerned Alabama may not have the top class in the country this season because of Ohio State’s success, Cowan interrupted SEC Country.

“I’m not even worried about Ohio State, so don’t even ask me any questions about Ohio State,” Cowan said at The Opening, a premier camp for the nation’s top high school football players held at Nike’s world headquarters.

Cowan is the creator of the unofficial motto for the Crimson Tide’s Class of 2017, “Savages wanna play with savages.” That’s mainly why he isn’t concerned with what the Buckeyes’ 2017 class looks like. He thinks there are more savages in Alabama’s class than Ohio State’s.

“That’s ranked off of all those stars and junk, but we’re talking about Alabama having goons and savages in this class,” Cowan said. “I’m talking about boys who want to play and give it their all. I’m telling you all of my boys that are committed are savages. We are straight dogs.”

The nation’s No. 5 outside linebacker has been one of Alabama’s most outspoken recruits and has been instrumental in getting some of the Crimson Tide’s most recent commitments such as 4-star quarterback Mac Jones and 4-star linebacker Markail Benton.

The U.S. Army All-American admits that Ohio State was better than Alabama in 2015 when the Buckeyes defeated the Tide 42-35, but he said that’s well in the past now.

“I think we’re so much better than them now,” Cowan said.

Expect Cowan to continue to be in the ears of all the top recruits in the country as Alabama tries to leapfrog Ohio State and Georgia for the No. 1 class. The Crimson Tide has had the top recruiting class in the country for the past six seasons.

It’s not uncommon for a high school football team to have multiple Division I athletes, but it’s rare to see two 5-star teammates in the same graduating class.

That’s what you’ll find at Episcopal High School in Houston, home to offensive tackle Walker Little and Marvin Wilson, the nation’s consensus No. 1 defensive tackle. They’re both rated 5-star recruits by 247Sports and Rivals.

Little and Wilson have been teammates since 2013, and it didn’t take long for their talent to show up.

“I came off the line one time,” Wilson said, “and Walker lifted me in the air and dropped me on the ground. That’s when I realized how good he was.”

Little blossomed sooner than Wilson, who had a basketball background growing up. But once he settled in with football, Episcopal practices became heavyweight sparring sessions.

“Our coach has always matched us up,” Little said. “We do it all the time, and the competition is second to none. He’s gotten me prepared for so many camps and big games.”

Little and Wilson shined last week at The Opening, Nike’s annual summer camp for elite football recruits. Wilson won MVP honors for the defensive line group, while Little was named one of the top five offensive linemen at the event.

“Guys had to adapt to competition (at The Opening). I go against it every day,” Wilson said. “We’ve had some tough, intense battles. We really go at it, but it’s been the best feeling ever.

“We might talk trash on the field, but we’re cool right after practice. I go over to his house and we play 2K. That’s my guy.”

Both players said they split practice reps “50-50.” The exceptions are when one of them breaks out a new technique.

“He’s gotten me a couple times with that,” Little said. “I get him every once and a while. We’re pretty even usually, but it’s fun when we try a different move.”

Little and Wilson broke down each other’s game to SEC Country.

Little: “Marvin has crazy ability. Just his combination of size and speed. He’ll bull rush you as well as anyone in the country, but he can get around you just as quickly. He’s hard to stop.”

Wilson: “Watch out for Walker’s kick step. He’s real quick off the ball and he has long arms. That’s what makes him stand out over everybody else. He’s big and can move, so it’s not easy to get around him.”

Each of them hold more than two dozen scholarship offers, and the similar schools they’re considering include Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas.

“It’s been a special recruiting process with him, just having someone there who knows what you’re going through,” Little said. “I bounce things off him and we talk about coaches. It helps out and make the process a lot better.”

Little and Wilson don’t care whether they play together in college, but they know they’ll be ready for the next level.

“I’ll be more prepared than most freshmen,” Wilson said. “We compete in practice, in the weight room, in workouts — everything that goes into playing college football. I think he’ll have me more ready than anybody. We just push each other.”

What the McKinney de-commitment means

Xavier McKinney, a 4-star safety from Roswell (Ga.) High School, reopened his recruitment Thursday afternoon on the heels of telling SEC Country a month ago that Florida and Clemson were tied for second for his services.

“Florida is a great place to be,” McKinney said at the Corky Kell 7-on-7 tournament in June. “Of course, they are ‘DBU’ and have all of those great defensive backs. Clemson has a family-based community and that’s what I’m looking for.”

Clemson should be the considered the favorite to land McKinney right now, because his current Roswell teammate, 4-star cornerback LeAnthony Williams, is committed to the Tigers and his former teammate Tre Lamar is a freshman linebacker for the Tigers. Those two have been recruiting McKinney hard for Clemson.

It needs to be said that McKinney was not pushed out of Alabama’s class. This decision was made on his own, a source told SEC Country. The Alabama staff was very high on McKinney and wanted him in the 2017 class.

With the loss of McKinney, Alabama is down to 14 commitments. The Crimson Tide remains No. 3 in the 2017 team rankings behind Ohio State and Georgia.

Excellent news coming in the secondary?

JaCoby Stevens, a 5-star safety from Oakland High School (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), will make his commitment known by the end of the month. Sources believe this has become a two-team race, with Alabama and Georgia are the potential suitors for Stevens.

Several months ago, Stevens looked to be a shoe-in for the Bulldogs. At one point, Stevens named Georgia his leader and said the Bulldogs held a giant lead over the rest of the field.

“Georgia is still recruiting me the hardest right now,” Stevens said to DawgNation’s Jeff Sentell back in April. “By far. .. You could say no one is gaining any ground on Georgia right now.”

Since then, Alabama has slowly cut into that lead Georgia once held. Here’s what he had to say about Alabama three weeks ago on the heels of a visit to Tuscaloosa.

“Alabama is a pretty good school. It’s a school that I am definitely considering at this point,” Stevens said. “I can’t really say what Alabama’s chances of getting me are. I can’t say it’s a great or bad chance right now because I need to go back in the lab and compare all of the schools.”

Sources have told SEC Country that Alabama has been gaining confidence in where it stands with Stevens as his announcement approaches.

When did this happen?

More DBs to watch

Hamsah Nasirildeen

It’s possible Alabama adds a commitment from 4-star safety Hamsah Nasirildeen (Concord, N.C.) as soon as this upcoming week. Nasirildeen will visit Alabama July 17-20, and it’s his second trip to Tuscaloosa in the past three months.

The U.S. Army All-American told SEC Country two weeks ago that Alabama was tied on top alongside South Carolina and Florida. He is expected to visit Florida on July 22, which could make him hold off on a commitment before he leaves Tuscaloosa.

He did know why he would commit to Alabama if he did choose the Tide.

“They put a high level of kids into the NFL and they graduate a high number of players each year,” Nasirildeen said. “They win a lot of national championships, too.”

Kyriq McDonald

James Clemens High School standout Kyriq McDonald is very likely to join the Alabama class when he makes his college decision. McDonald, a 3-star athlete from Madison, Ala., included Alabama in his top 7 earlier this week.

McDonald is teammates with major Alabama target LaBryan Ray, a 4-star defensive end. Those two, along with 3-star linebacker Monty Rice, another James Clemens star, have discussed the possibility of playing together in college. The three of those players have a chance to do that at Alabama in the coming months when they choose their schools.

Montaric Brown

A decision was supposed to come last week, but 4-star safety Montaric Brown (Ashdown, Ark.) opted to push back his commitment. At this time, it’s a two-team race with Arkansas and Alabama fighting it out. Brown is believed to be behind both Nasirildeen and McDonald on the wish list, so he may end up with the Razorbacks if a decision comes soon.

The guys on the Arky board think Brown is going to Alabama FWIW.

I read somewhere earlier this morning that even though Stevens came out with a top 3 that didn't include Bama, that Bama was one of the teams to watch out for.

I'll hop on the bandwagon now (about Stevens). Ha. I had logged on to post that redfish had been saying that Bama was in good shape with Stevens as of a few days ago, when somebody else posted that essentially "it looks like Bama's not going to make his top 3", so I was surprised and didn't post it. Maybe the fish is right here. Apparently we have a pretty good shot.

Yeah I posted it, I was kind of skeptical when he didn't have Bama in it, I was thinking he could just be just trying to throw people off. Kipp Adams on the Georgia Board even said he thinks Georgia is kind of mirky for Stevens so we should find out soon either way

Landing Stevens would make me happy on two fronts. First, it would send a message to Kirby that we aren't fricking around any more. Secondly, to see the L5U melt since he was initially committed to them.

Cowan might be my favorite recruit ever. He just doesn't give a damn. It's refreshing, having a kid that is so confident about his decision.
