JUCO cornerback Jhavonte Dean says he impressed Pruitt, others on Alabama staff at TCU-hosted camp
John Garcia, Jr.

The Alabama Crimson Tide hasn't been the most active program to this point but it did send several coaches to Texas for TCU's event over the weekend. This is where is helped UA notice former Cincinnati defensive back Jhavonte Dean, now at Blinn College in the Lone Star State. The long Miami native now expects an Alabama offer.

"I worked at TCU camp, killed it, 'Bama coaches was feeling me throughout the whole camp," he said. "Also, (they) was coaching me as well. I went up against the best receivers and held it down and from there my coaches were telling me that 'Bama is going to offer me."

Dean reports defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, tackles and tight ends coach Mario Cristobal, wide receiver coach Billy Napier and offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin among the Crimson Tide staff on hand. Some of them interacted with the class of 2017 junior college prospect.

"Coach Pruitt was telling me a press technique, to throw that hand in that chest, mirror the receiver," he said. Dean is in no rush with the recruiting process having taken minimal college visits to this point.

Interview with Bumper Pool.

Texas linebacker Bumper Pool camps at Alabama, earns scholarship offer from Nick Saban
John Garcia, Jr.

"I was really excited about working for coach [Nick] Saban and all the coaches, I was pleased with how I performed, it went really well and I ended up getting the offer," he said. "I went and talked with coach Saban for 15 to 20 minutes and he said I had the offer. He talked a ton about the connections, everything other than football -- he talked about football a little bit too -- but it was about so much more and how Alabama can offer so much more.

"It was so unreal, I was like, 'is this really happening?' We just got out of working out and now I'm sitting in front of coach Saban and he's telling me reasons why I should come to Alabama. It's really cool, it's one of those things that's a once in a lifetime deal."

"They wont the national championship last year so it's an elite program but seeing what I saw yesterday, it's more than just that. The people are great, everybody is caring and they want you to be successful all the way around. I think that's important."

"They wanted to see me run, open my hips, change direction, all those little things," Pool said. "The defensive coordinator (Jeremy Pruitt) was watching me the whole time, so it was exciting. I had a good time. "This camp is intense, they want to see you get tired and see how you work afterwards."

Spending Tuesday in town taking in the rest of the campus and Tuscaloosa itself, Pool is in no rush to hurry the recruiting process.

Four-star junior college offensive lineman Elliot Baker had long planned to spend several days in Tuscaloosa this week to both visit and camp at Alabama, the program high on his list since it offered in the spring. It resulted in tangible news late Monday night.

"I sat down with coach [Nick] Saban and my O-line coach, coach [Eduardo] Nuno and Saban just laid down the process and kind of what all Alabama is about. I bought in right away and I knew this was the right fit for me and the place I wanted to be."
"I came in with zero expectations, just wanted to feel the place out and yea..."

The City College of San Francisco product, who is originally from San Francisco, gave Saban the verbal pledge to make an even 10 commitments for the Crimson Tide in the 2017 cycle. Baker joins fellow four-star Alex Leatherwood, who has also been in town multiple days, among offensive linemen on board to this point.

"It was amazing in camp, I got to get coached up by [offensive line] coach [Brent] Key and took a bunch of reps," Baker said. "I got to do some of the drills I will be doing in the future. I spent maybe an hour on the field (with Key), he brings a lot of energy and is fired up out there. He's big on technique and hand-placement, he's definitely intense and wants to see you get better out there."

The decision propelled Alabama to No. 3 in the Scout team recruiting rankings, as the group features blue chip prospects in nine of the 10 pledges to this point.

Harris cemented his spot at the top with an outstanding spring at numerous events, both playing on the 7v7 circuit and at The Opening Oakland regional, where he earned a second consecutive invite to The Opening Finals next month.
The Alabama commit continues to draw attention from all over the country and Ohio State, UCLA, USC and Washington have all drawn visits from him in the past few months while Michigan tries to get back in to it for the five-star.

Behind Harris is Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy athlete Dylan Moses, who has been right at the top of the rankings for the 2017 class since he was a freshman. Moses shined at The Opening Houston and he too punched a return trip to The Opening Finals.

At No. 3 continues to be DeAngelo Gibbs, the five-star athlete from Loganville (Ga.) Grayson. Gibbs was the DB MVP at The Opening Seattle and like Moses and Harris, he'll make his second straight visit to Beaverton for The Opening Finals.

Chesapeake (Va.) Indian River athlete Devon Hunter remains at No. 4 in the Scout 300 and behind him continues to be Graham (Wash.) Kapowsin offensive tackle Foster Sarell at No. 5.
Both Hunter and Sarell earned golden tickets to The Opening Finals next month for the first time.

Behind the top five, there was some movement, with three prospects making their first appearance in the top 10.
At No. 6 is Trey Smith, the five-star offensive tackle from Jackson (Tenn.) University School, who was dominant at The Opening Chicago and will push Sarell in Beaverton for the top spot in the tackle rankings.

Moving up to No. 7 is Fontana (Calif.) Summit running back Stephen Carr, who has nearly matched Harris performance for performance all spring and may be the best true running back in the Southland in a decade. A soft verbal to USC, schools continue to try and sway Carr but he remains committed to his dream school.

"Over the past couple of months, there have been different settings we have been able to evaluate players all over the South live," said national recruiting analyst Chad Simmons. "We had spring practice, camps, and 7v7 events, then, of course, there is always the film. There have been a few new names make big moves in recent months and they are safety Montaric Brown and athlete Noah Igbinoghene."

Noah is from Alabama.

Brown is out of safety out of Ashdown (Ark.) and he was somewhat unknown until 2016.
"He did not go out and camp a year ago, so he wasn't known nationally, but he is now," said Simmons. "He is a safety with great size and instincts who has the ability to turn the ball over with an interception or support the run by making a tackle."
The new four star is set to commit August 24 and his final seven are Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss.

A pair of four-star prospects moved into the Scout 300 in Maryland linebacker commit Ayinde Eley of Olney (Md.) Good Counsel and uncommitted athlete C.J. Holmes of Cheshire (Conn.) Academy.
Holmes is No. 203, and after adding recent offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama and UCLA, his one-time top three of Penn State, Tennessee and Syracuse no longer exists.
"Most schools are recruiting Holmes to play receiver, but several like him at running back as well," said Dohn. "And Eley impressed during a pair of The Opening regional camps with his change of direction, burst and length."
