OT Jean Delance, Mesquite (Texas) North Mesquite

New rank: 207 | Change: -52

“Delance has a great frame. He is a flexible and athletic offensive lineman. However, his technique and footwork were challenged throughout the week at Under Armour as was his overall strength. His definitely has a bright future though as he continues to develop. Delance is committed to Texas.” - Howell

New rank: 209 | Change: -68

I expected this. I don't see him leaving for San Fran though. Chip Kelly is toxic, and San Francisco is a mess of an organization. He would be on very shaky ground there, and his potential failures there (due to things outside of his control) would put him at a disadvantage if and when he would want to get a HC gig. If I were him, I would spend this year at Alabama and then let the HC offers come in. People have finally realized he's a helluva offensive mind, and he will be sought after.

I wonder what to make of Kiffin going on the road to recruit Najee Harris.

Harris goes to school just 60 miles or so from the 49ers Headquarters. Maybe it was a two birds / one stone trip for Kiffin? Interview with the 49ers, touch base with Harris.

Only an hour drive to SF from Harris and Antioch.

Just sayin'

I guess I could see that, but I wonder why Saban would want Kiffin to go out there if he was planning on leaving. It would be better to have sent a staffer there who isn't potentially leaving in three weeks if that is what Kiffin is planning on doing.

The fact that Kelly would discuss options with Kiffin is no surprise. Kelly spent some time with the Alabama program prior to the Championship game during their preparation and his name was mentioned by Kirk Herbstreit during the broadcast.

You're seeing more tempo tonight from Alabama than you typically see. Lane Kiffin had worked, actually in the last week, with Chip Kelly. Chip Kelly visited Tuscaloosa and one of the things they talked about is what tempo can do to a Clemson defense. And you've seen a lot of evidence of that tempo tonight.

When asked about the visit, Kiffin replied:

It was good to have Chip come in and just spend some time with him, talk about some different things. It was really good to see him. I've always had a good relationship with him and it's always good to be able to bring some people in to get some ideas from.

This is the article Mag was referring to. Apparently, Chip Kelly plans on calling the plays. Not sure why Kiffin would want to go anywhere where he would just hold the clipboard.

Hey, maybe San Fran paid for his plane ticket out there? A penny saved is a penny earned and all that.

That's my biggest question.

Pat Shurmur gave up being a playcaller to get on the ground floor of the Chip Kelly experiment in Philly. Shurmur had just failed as Cleveland's HC, so he thought he'd take the easy street back to a HC with the Kelly rub. He backed the wrong horse, and now he's destined to be an OC for someone like St Louis.

Kiffin doesn't have to make people forget about his current job, because he's doing an exemplary job. He'd be giving up power in AL to land on shaky ground in SF.

IF he took it, I think Layla played a big role. I've heard she hasn't even left CA...

Free Bleacher Report Content

With the majority of today's offenses lining up in the spread, quality cover athletes are needed in the secondary. With teams looking to score points in bunches, it's vital to have defensive backs who have the ability to be lockdown athletes in passing situations.

It's an added bonus if a cornerback can hit like a safety and a safety can cover receivers down the field like a cornerback. In today's game, there's no such thing as a one-dimensional defender.

A solid defensive back is an athlete who can shut down a run game and make an offense one-dimensional. The 2016 class has its share of outstanding cornerbacks and safeties who could help a college program instantly.

Here's our breakdown of America's top-ranked prospects at the defensive back position. Scores for cornerbacks are based on individual assessments of speed, ball skills, run support and coverage. Scores for safeties are based on individual assessments of ball skills, tackling, run support and pass coverage.

16. 4-star CB Jared Mayden

Height/Weight: 6'1", 190 lbs

High School: Sachse (Sachse, Texas)

247Sports Ranking: No. 11 CB; No. 129 overall

Bleacher Report Score: 94/100

Uncommitted: Considering Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Georgia, Oregon and Florida

The recruiting cycle is nearing its end, and Jared Mayden is an uncommitted target once again. After decommitting from Oregon on Jan. 6, Mayden can be a gifted surprise for one lucky school looking to strike gold before national signing day.

With more than 40 reported offers, Mayden is a proven cornerback who has shown himself to be fearless in multiple camp settings. His supercompetitive nature makes him an athlete to watch down the road.

Bleacher Report Analysis

Mayden is a physical cornerback who uses his athleticism and instincts to make plays all over the field. He is a solid bump-and-run defender, and he wins a lot of one-on-one battles with his tenacity.

Mayden is a cornerback with a safety's size and could see early playing time at both positions in college, as well as rover. His focus, however, is playing college football as a shutdown cornerback.

13. 4-star CB Nigel Knott

Height/Weight: 5'11", 175 lbs

High School: Germantown (Madison, Mississippi)

247Sports Ranking: No. 9 CB; No. 70 overall

Bleacher Report Score: 95/100

Uncommitted: Considering Alabama, Oregon, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Florida State and LSU

After a couple of commitment-announcement postponements, Nigel Knott is inching closer to making a decision. He has close to 30 reported offers, and one of the schools from the state of Mississippi is hoping to keep him close to home.

Knott is one of those players who defines athleticism. He's shown his worth with speed, leaping ability and agility on and off the football field. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds and recorded a 46.5-inch vertical jump at The Opening.

Bleacher Report Analysis

Knott's an outstanding athlete who uses his quickness, change of direction and recovery speed to be a reliable shutdown defender. He is one of the nation's fastest players, and because of his speed, he rarely gets beaten deep in one-on-one situations.

Along with his coverage skills, Knott is a sound tackler. Because of his athleticism, he has the potential to score starter's minutes early in his college career.

10. 4-star S Nigel Warrior

Height/Weight: 6'0", 186 lbs

High School: Peachtree Ridge (Suwanee, Georgia)

247Sports Ranking: No. 4 S; No. 61 overall

Bleacher Report Score: 94/100

Uncommitted: Considering Tennessee, LSU, Alabama and Georgia

The month of January will be huge for Nigel Warrior as he takes visits to LSU, Alabama and Tennessee. The son of former NFL defensive back Dale Carter, Warrior is an athlete who can line up either safety or cornerback but is more comfortable at the former.

Warrior has nearly 30 reported offers from coast to coast, and the school that lands him will get a playmaker in the secondary. Tennessee is hoping Warrior follows in his father's footsteps.

Bleacher Report Analysis

Warrior has been groomed to be a standout defensive back, someone who can play every position in the secondary. He is a safety who relies on his instincts to make plays. He rarely makes the same mistake twice.

Warrior tackles well, but he also has shown himself as a sound cover defender. He holds his own in running downs, and he's a reliable defender in passing downs.

9. 4-star CB Shyheim Carter

Height/Weight: 6'0", 190 lbs

High School: Kentwood (Kentwood, Louisiana)

247Sports Ranking: No. 6 CB; No. 57 overall

Bleacher Report Score: 94/100

Uncommitted: Considering Georgia, Alabama and Ole Miss

Remaining scheduled January visits for Shyheim Carter include trips to Alabama and Ole Miss. After decommitting from Alabama in August, Carter has been taking his time with recruiting and finalizing his college plans.

Alabama, Georgia and Ole Miss are three schools that could ultimately land Carter on national signing day. Miami, which received an official visit last weekend, also is a contender. Whichever school gets him will get an athlete who can line up at multiple positions on the field, on both sides of the ball.

Bleacher Report Analysis

Carter's strongest assets are his versatility and athleticism, as he can play cornerback or safety on defense and any of the skill positions on offense. He has quick feet and good hands, making one-on-one matchups difficult for opposing wide receivers.

Carter's competitive nature is something to be admired, and he plays with a high level of confidence. College coaches will have options when choosing where to use him in the secondary.

The Lane Kiffin era in Alabama will, after all, continue.

After his name was mentioned as a front-runner for the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator, Alabama announced Saturday that Kiffin would be back for 2015.

Curious that he would take that over the UCLA coordinator job. UCLA would have probably afforded him the opportunity to continue to call his own plays and a much more stable environment than San Fran.

I don't pay much attention to recruiting until around now. And I usually read this thread and other team's recruiting threads, SEC Recruiting board, and LSU Recruiting board.

Tonight I learned -

If you're planning on living in Louisiana after graduation, being the backup QB at LSU is probably more valuable than a degree from Harvard.

Depending upon what you want to do for a career, I'd say there's a lot of truth to that. I'd say you could also insert just about every "State U" with a major football program there for LSU and you'd also be correct.
