Offensive Line

— Overall, the interior offensive linemen really struggled today. Alabama commit Chris Owens, Florida State pledge Baveon Johnson and Arizona State Cole Cabrahl were all on their backs at some point when going up against the likes of Agim, Benito Jones and Rashan Gary.

— As mentioned, it wasn't a good day overall for interior offensive linemen, but the best of the bunch was Alabama pledge Deonte Brown. He had his way with Kendell Jones and was the only lineman that was able to put Benito Jones on his back on the first day of practice.

Defense Line

— He might not be in our top performers group, but McTelvin Agim had a solid overall showing. The Arkansas commit lined up at both defensive tackle and defensive end and was a load for offensive linemen to handle. He might not be the quickest guy in the world, but he's extremely strong.

— Alabama defensive tackle commit Kendell Jones is nicknamed "The Hulk" because of his sheer size. Jones took up multiple blockers on a number of plays but was slow of the ball and pushed back too often.

Linebackers

— Off the hoof, the linebacker group of Lyndell Wilson, Dontavious Jackson and Ben Davis looks more like a college All-American position group than one that is only in high school.

— There wasn’t a whole lot of hitting going on during the first practice, but linebacker Aaron Hansford still found ways to make plays. During 7on7 he had a nice interception of quarterback Jack Allison, who was looking to make a competition down the seam.

— Jeffrey McCulloch moves extremely well for a 6-foot-3, 230-pound backer. It’ll be fun to watch him thump once they really start hitting.

Defensive back

— Standout safety Lamar Jackson made an incredible interception off Allison. He showed big-time speed, terrific coverage skills, and made a major case to be in the top performers list.

— There are few players more fun to watch than Nigel Knott. He’s an athletic freak and was strong in coverage, but it remains to be seen if his size will cause him problems at the next level. He did struggle at the line of scrimmage on occasion.

— If one thing is for sure, Brandon Jones is clearly a safety and not a cornerback. He really struggled in man coverage, but showed good range in the “centerfield” role.

— Brandon Burton looked solid all day long. He made a few nice plays on some deep balls and showed better speed than expected.

Next Five Defense

2. CB Kristian Fulton: The Metairie (La.) Archbishop Rummel product was tight in coverage much of the day and was able to get his hands on several passes. If there were any faults with Fulton on the first day, it was the fact he dropped a pair of easy interceptions, but he was in position to make the plays.

Fulton is our only real target on the Armour Team.

Some practice tidbits:

quote:

Early fumble by Alabama running back commit BJ Emmons during some 11-on-11 drills.

quote:

WR A.J. Brown looking really polished. Clean, tight routes. Catches the ball away from his body with ease.

quote:

Ole Miss DT commit Benito Jones got the best of Alabama OL commit Chris Owens on three straight plays. Owens looked too slow out of his stance.

quote:

CB Nigel Knott with some sticky coverage on WR N'Keal Harry. Covered all three moves and forced an incompletion.

quote:

Rashan Gary bull rushes Chris Owens back into QB. Next rep, Gary swims past him.

quote:

Lamar Jackson, Levonta Taylor, Nigel Knott and Brandon Burton are back for punt return duty for Highlight.

quote:

Kristian Fulton drops a pick on a fluttering Matt Fink pass.

quote:

Fulton dropped another easy INT.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The first day of practice is finished at the Under Armour All-American Game and even though it's still early in the week, here's a look at five prospect comparisons to current college or NFL stars.

quote:

LB Ben Davis
Gordo, Ala.

Comparison: New England Patriots LB Brandon Spikes, a five-star from Shelby (N.C.) Crest who played at Florida.
Overview: Both Davis and Spikes are tall and long, both can move from sideline to sideline to track down plays and both love to hit once they engage the ball carrier.

There are a ton of similarities between the two, who have racked up big numbers in their career. The five-star and top-rated inside linebacker is a tad more athletic and Spikes was more physically imposing and a touch more physical at the same stage.

I don't see this comparison at all. Spikes was terrible in coverage and stiff as a board.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. More than 30 schools have commits taking part in this year's Under Armour All-America Game and during the first day of practice on Monday, several committed stars stood out. But it was some of college football's blue bloods that had committed players turn in the best performances. Here's a rundown of which schools had the best overall showing.

quote:

5. Alabama

Four future Crimson Tide players are participating in the game and running back commitment B.J. Emmons lead the way on Monday. Emmons is explosive and showed a nice ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and also make people miss in space. While defensive tackle commit Kendell Jones struggled, offensive line commits Deonte Brown and Chris Owens both had very consistent days and look like future contributors for The Tide.
