OTHER NOTES …

Four-star linebacker Markail Benton of Phenix City (Ala.) High School named a top three of Alabama, Auburn and Florida State. And while two-thirds of his list is made up of in-state programs, he says campus location will not be a factor in his decision. Just a junior, Benton says he intends to wait until National Singing Day 2017 to announce his decision.

Coaches at Park Crossing High School think highly of 2017 defensive back Kameron Green. Park Crossing head coach Smitty Griner called Green his best defensive back, and the fact that he has a handful of FBS-bound players in the secondary makes that high praise. Green is yet to receive his first offer but a number of teams have reached out to the Park Crossing staff to inquire.

Sophomore Marcus Jenkins goes by the name "Tank" for good reason. A 2018 prospect, the massive offensive lineman already holds a number of scholarship offers for good reason. At this early point in the recruiting process, Jenkins says LSU, Auburn and Florida lead his recruitment. He plans to attend Clemson's Nov. 21 game against Wake Forrest.

Auburn commit John Broussard made the game-saving tackle in overtime, as he brought down Lee's Ruggs just short of the goal line to seal the victory. Broussard closes well and is effective in run support despite being a tad slender. He is unlikely to take other official visits and seems almost certain to sign with the Tigers on National Signing Day.

Florida commit Jeawon Taylor is considering a visit to Auburn in the near future, but remains solidly committed to the Gators. Taylor, a three-star defensive back, plans to visit UF for its game against Florida State on Nov. 28, but has not scheduled a date for a trip to Auburn.

Park Crossing quarterback Malik Cunningham, who visited Auburn for its game against Georgia, holds a handful of offers as things stand now. Georgia is responsible for his lone SEC offer and the Bulldogs intend to move the junior to defensive back should they land his commitment. Cunningham says he hopes to land scholarship offers from Auburn and Clemson in the future and would strongly consider each. Schools such as Troy, Toledo and Louisville have offered him as a quarterback.

I don't recall him being injured. He ran for over 100 yards in the Under Armor game.

I know he was clocked in the 4.3 - 4.4 range at some camp months before he signed with us though.

ETA: I'm looking at his recruiting profile on 247 and he only ran the ball 97 times his Senior year. However, he rushed for 1,576 yards and 23 TDs.

Here is the blurb from the Best of the Midwest Combine where Harris was the RB MVP in February of 2014:

quote:

RB: Damien Harris, The nation’s top running back from Berea (Ky.) Madison Southern ran a 4.36 40-yard dash in the testing portion and showed he was a complete back in 1-on-1s dominating linebackers as both a route runner and blocker. Took home position MVP honors according to the camp coaches.

According to another article about the Combine he was offered by Alabama on his way home from the camp.

I think he will be good once he gets comfortable. He has to have coaching staffs trust though because they don't just let anyone return kicks.

He injured his right knee in 2014 and missed a little time during the season. I'm not sure how serious the injury was though.

Xavier McKinney is one of the state’s top juniors and committed to Alabama in September. The 4-star safety out of Georgia’s Roswell High School took a visit for the Alabama-LSU game and came away impressed.

“The game was crazy,” McKinney told DawgNation. “That was one that I really wanted to go see. I wanted to what they were going to do against Leonard Fournette, and they did a great job of stopping him. I was really impressed with the defense.”

McKinney didn’t take the trip alone, however. He brought along some family members to get their opinion on his school of choice.

“I brought my mom, my uncle and my brother,” Mckinney said. “My main focus was to get them up there so they could get a personal connection with coach (Nick) Saban and coach (Kirby) Smart.”

So what did his family think of the visit?

“They loved it,” Mckinney said grinning. “Actually, my uncle is a big sports fan so he loved it. He likes Alabama a lot, and LSU, so he loved the atmosphere. My mom thought it would be a great fit for me and she was just looking out at the crowd and was like ‘In the next couple of years you’ll be here, and that’s amazing.’ She really loved it.”

That’s good news for Alabama fans. Mckinney is rated as the state of Georgia’s No. 28 prospect and the No. 13 safety in the country. He said he’s really grown as a leader during his junior season. There’s one player McKinney said he watches closely, and it’s a name fans are familiar with.

“Cyrus Jones,” McKinney said. “Their best cornerback, I watch him. Whenever I go to the games, or I watch it on TV, I make sure I get a good look at what he’s doing on the field. I just want to see his technique and what he does.”

McKinney is already impacting games in the same way that Jones does. In Roswell’s first-round playoff game, the 4-star safety intercepted two passes and had a 70-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He was named SEC Country’s Defensive Recruit of the Week for his performance.

On the practice field, McKinney joked with teammates and showed a high amount of energy. He’s developing as a leader, and Roswell coach John Ford said McKinney’s effort level is one of the first things he noticed.

McKinney said his commitment to Alabama is solid, but he will take a trip to Clemson for the South Carolina game. Right now, though, McKinney is focused on the state playoffs.

“During the day, really all I can think about is practicing,” he said. “Trying to get better as a team so that hopefully we can get a good shot at winning state.”

Every Sunday, SEC Country will unveil its offensive and defensive recruits of the week based on their weekend performance. In order to qualify, recruits must have at least two SEC offers.

This week’s SEC Country Offensive Recruit of the Week honors goes to Cam Akers, an Alabama commit from Clinton, Miss.

SEC Country’s Offensive Recruit of the Week: Cam Akers

Cam Akers got the nod for SEC Country’s Offensive Recruit of the Week honors following an impressive performance this past Friday night in his school’s first-round playoff game. Akers, a 2017 Alabama running back commit, who plays quarterback for his high school, had 355 yards passing, 144 yards on the ground and five total touchdowns. Akers led his team to a 56-42 win over Columbus High School (Columbus, Miss.).

“I believe I had a good game because I missed two weeks,” Akers told SEC Country. “It was also a playoff game and I knew I had to step up and do what I had to do.”

Akers committed to Alabama this past August. He is rated the nation’s No. 5 running back and the No. 1 prospect in the state of Mississippi in the class of 2017.

Owen Pappoe may be a freshman, but that hasn’t stopped some of the top college football programs in the country from offering him a scholarship.

Pappoe, who will likely be one of the top prospects in the class of 2019, has offers from UGA, Auburn, Tennessee and Florida State, to name a few.

One school that he’s hoping extends an offer soon is Alabama. Pappoe gushed when talking about the Crimson Tide and his visit there two months ago.

“Alabama is just an entire different atmosphere than every other school I have been to,” Pappoe told SEC Country. “Alabama is definitely the top SEC school. I like them a lot.”

The 6-foot-1, 194-pound outside linebacker doesn’t have any favorites right now and said he isn’t planning on rushing into committing anytime soon, but he did say he is high on Alabama.

“I like their 3-4 defense because that’s what we run at Grayson right now. I think I would fit well in their scheme if I go there.”

The plan for Pappoe, who just started playing football two years ago, is to wait until after his senior year to make a commitment.

SEC Country’s Defensive Recruit of the Week: Xavier McKinney

In the first round of Georgia state playoffs, Xavier McKinney was a difference maker for his high school. The 2017 defensive back and Alabama commit capitalized on both sides of the ball en route to Roswell’s 63-25 win over Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.).

Five tackles
Two interceptions
Two pass break-ups
Kickoff returned for a touchdown

“I think it was one of the overall best games I’ve played in high school,” McKinney told SEC Country. “But I could have made a couple more plays. I was just ready to put on a show.”

Best of the Rest

Elysee Mbem-Bosse, LB, Cedar Grove High School, Ga. (Undecided) — Mbem-Bosse, a four-star prospect according to Rivals.com, registered 11 tackles, one for loss, one fumble recovery and two touchdowns in Cedar Grove’s 47-0 shutout versus Pierce County.

Derrick Brown, DL, Lanier High School, Ga. (Undecided) — Georgia’s top-rated prospect came away with six tackles, four assists, two tackles for loss, one quarterback hurry and an eight-yard touchdown reception as Lanier topped East Paulding, 27-13.

Antwuan Jackson, DT, Cedar Grove High School, Ga. (Undecided) — Jackson, a four-star prospect, put up some gaudy numbers from his interior defensive line position on Friday. He registered eight tackles, three for loss, one sack and a forced fumble in Cedar Grove’s 47-0 win over Pierce County.

Ben Davis, LB, Gordo High School, Ala. (Undecided) — Davis, the top inside linebacker in this year’s recruiting cycle, posted another impressive two-way performance on Friday. The five-star registered a team-leading 10 tackles and recorded two catches for 58 yards and a touchdown.

Jamyest Williams, ATH, Archer High School, Ga. (Undecided) — The 2017 four-star athlete recorded five tackles, three pass breakups and a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown in Archer’s 40-17 win over Etowah.

Recruit of the Week

Alabama had a top running back right in their backyard and the Crimson Tide picked up his commitment Monday October 9. Brian Robinson is a 6-1, 205 pound junior running back out of Hillcrest in Tuscaloosa right down the road from the University of Alabama campus. His family will have no problem seeing him play when the Tide is at home in the coming years.

Robinson is one of eight 2017 prospects committed to Alabama now and he is one of three who project to play running back on the next level. He loves how productive Crimson Tide running backs are how stars in Tuscaloosa at that position go on to get drafted by an NFL team since Nick Saban took over.

This future running back will fit right in. He may lack the elite break away speed, but he has great size, he runs well behind his pads, he can run inside or outside, and he is a guy who can get the tough yards after contact.

Few doubt his skill, but many have little idea where the elite is most likely to end up at the next level. Six schools are seemingly in the mix with a commitment date now set for December 14.

"In my opinion it's going to come down to North Carolina, NC State, Alabama, Florida and Clemson," Clark said. "You've got to give the teams closer to home -- North Carolina and NC State -- an advantage. He's visited Carolina and NC State several times, but you can't count out Alabama and Florida. He's been to Florida on an official visit and he's been to Alabama multiple times."

Chris Owens, a 6-foot-3, 315-pound offensive lineman from Arlington (Texas) Lamar was one play away from seeing his high school career end.
But the Alabama commit and his Viking teammates escaped with a thrilling 39-33 victory. The go ahead points came on a 94-yard kickoff return touchdown with only 16 seconds remaining.
In the win Owens played right tackle and was especially fun to watch when run blocking, delivering some big blows. He will play offensive guard or center in college.

There is a thread on BOL saying "there is a chance" with Marlon Davidson greater than what we think. Don't know if it is a troll but thought was interesting.

How could he not want to come here and show off. Won't have the kind of pressure on him that he would at the Barn. Playing with better talent will make him look better. Come play with your best friends and win championships.
