Neville DT Lawrence among nation's elite recruits
Adam Hunsucker, ahunsucker@thenewsstar.com 7:54 p.m. CDT May 6, 2015
There's no doubt Rashard Lawrence's future lies on the football field. One look at the sheer number of scholarship offers he has — and who they're from — will confirm that.
The only thing the five-star defensive tackle prospect loves more than football is competing. With that in mind, Lawrence put his recruiting on hold for the winter to focus on basketball — where he manned one of the forward spots for Neville.
Basketball ended two months ago.
Now college coaches across the country are licking their chops to talk to the 6-3, 305-pound man-child that some recruiting services have tabbed as the top overall prospect in Louisiana.
"It's good and bad at the same time," said Lawrence, who doesn't turn 17 until the fall. "I'm pretty fortunate to have some of the top coaches in the country contacting me but it wears on you after a while. I'm getting used to it and I'm having fun with it."
Orgeron and LSU special teams coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto stopped by Neville to see Lawrence on the first day of the spring recruiting period.
At this point it might be easier for Lawrence to answer what schools haven't offered him instead of who has. Lawrence has nine offers from the SEC, eight from the Pac-12, four from the Big 12 and three from ACC programs.
John Chavis — sporting a maroon polo as the new defensive coordinator at Texas A&M — and Florida State defensive tackles coach Odell Haggins were in Monroe on Monday for the first day of Neville spring practice.
When the 2015 LSU Coaches Caravan came to Monroe in April, defensive line coach Ed Orgeron and special teams coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto made a special stop at the Charlie Brown Field House to visit with Lawrence.
"Rashard and Coach O had a good visit, it's hard not to like Coach O," Neville head coach Mickey McCarty said. "I've gotten to know him over the years and I'm sure they'll certainly be paying attention to us thanks to Rashard."
Lawrence started picking up offers after hitting the camp circuit last summer and turned even more heads with a monster three-sack performance in Neville's 28-27 win over Warren Easton in the Class 4A state championship game.
Even other recruits are working on Lawrence. Ole Miss commit Shea Patterson — a five-star quarterback from Shreveport's Calvary Baptist — listed Lawrence as one of his own recruiting wants.
Lawrence doesn't plan on releasing his top-10 list until after spring football, but the first two schools out of his mouth are already LSU and Alabama, where he's already taken unofficial visits.
"Going to Tuscaloosa and seeing their facilities was great and any visit to LSU is always a good time. Those are the two that stand out the most," Lawrence said.
The Neville program is represented in both places.
Former Neville quarterback John Diarse — a four-star athlete and Louisiana's Mr. Football in 2012 — signed with LSU to play receiver. Four-star safety Laurence 'Hootie' Jones — Lawrence's teammate during his sophomore year — opted for Alabama.
Diarse and Jones both graduated a semester early, something Lawrence isn't opposed to.
Rashard's uncle Oliver Lawrence played linebacker at LSU alongside Toby Caston in the 1980s. Both the elder Lawrence and Caston are Neville products.
Lawrence has LSU legacy status, but also as some connections with the Crimson Tide through 'Uncle Oliver.'
"People think that I'm just going to go to LSU but my uncle actually played with [Alabama defensive line coach] Bo Davis too," Lawrence said. "I know those two are going to be on my list but I'm open to hearing what other schools have to say.
"Right now it's about finding the best fit for me wherever it is in the country."

Sonny from LSU247 still thinks that Mykel Jones ends up at USC.

I just remember last year supposedly he was a lot better than Charlot and the better prospect of the two.

Well of course he was. At that time Charlot was coming to Alabama and Jones was headed to LSU.

Summer break provides opportunities for prospects across the U.S. to become more involved in their respective recruiting processes. Time away from class creates room for campus visits, camp enrollments and overall assessments of how things are developing as national signing day approaches.
As the final stretch of this school year brings athletes closer to eventual collegiate decisions, we peeked ahead to assess events we foresee taking place this summer. Though we offer no guarantees, keep your eye on the following predictions, as they might just come to fruition before next football season.

None of Alabama's "Big Three" Will Pledge Before the 2015 Season
Alabama, a state that regularly carries substantial clout in the national recruiting spectrum, is particularly top-heavy when it comes to defense in the 2016 class. The group includes 5-star Lyndell "Mack" Wilson (linebacker), Marlon Davidson (defensive end) and Ben Davis (linebacker).
The trio hold more than 60 scholarship offers between them and could ultimately consider each other's intentions when the time comes to make a decision.
"We call ourselves 'The Trio.' Me, Mack and Marlon have really become close," Davis told Bleacher Report after a recent group trip to Florida State. "They're my dudes. We do talk about going to the same college together sometimes, but all three of us are probably going to wait until signing day. I don't know where I'm going, and I don't think they know yet, either. We'll see what the future holds."
It seems like each player will take their time in this process, though there are some obvious tie-ins at particular schools.
Davidson's older brother won a national championship in 2011 at Auburn. Davis' dad remains Alabama's all-time leader in tackles.
Ultimately, we believe at least two of the three will compete together in college. We just don't expect to know who they will be until perhaps next winter.

National signing day is still nearly nine months away but the 2016 recruiting trail continues to stay busy. We've already witnessed several notable commitment flips, stockpiles of talent pledging to particular programs and new coaching staffs making an impact.
As of this publication, 58 of the top 100 prospects in 247Sports' composite rankings remain uncommitted. An array of "under the radar" recruits will also undoubtedly land on the national radar through spring and summer camp circuits.
An abundance of talented athletes are still searching for colleges to call home. Based on how teams have started this cycle and how far we feel they'll fare in coming months, here's a look at our projected top 10 classes.

3. Alabama
Current Class Size: Six commits
Current 247Sports Composite Ranking: 20th
Key Commits
Alabama is currently riding an unprecedented five-year streak atop national recruiting rankings, creating arguably the deepest college football roster in America. You have to wonder if a log-jam throughout the depth chart is beginning to deter top 2016 talents from committing, but Nick Saban has proven that theory wrong in past cycles.
Early 2016 returns have been solid despite limited volume. The Crimson Tide secured pledges from Louisiana cornerback Shyheim Carter and Mississippi defensive tackle Raekwon Davis before their junior seasons, while 4-star offensive linemen Jonah Williams and Chris Owens committed this month.
Top Targets
There are still plenty of ducks on the pond for Saban, who is as revered by recruits as much as anyone in the country. Top overall 2016 prospect Rashan Gary plans to visit Tuscaloosa sometime soon, while fellow out-of-state 5-star defensive linemen Shavar Manuel and Rashard Lawrence view Alabama as a potential landing spot.
Alabama's in-state efforts center on a trio of defenders—linebacker Lyndell Wilson, defensive end Marlon Davidson and Tide legacy Ben Davis. Priority offensive targets include Louisiana tackle Willie Allen and Maryland wide receiver Trevon Diggs.

Davis and Wilson to Alabama
Davidson to Auburn
I would be floored by any other outcome.

I'm at lunch right now but there is an article on LSU's 247 site that rivals the great Jeffery Lee as far as sunshine pumping goes.
