Hailing from Texas, Malik Jefferson is the most talented player in the Lone Star State. He's a 5-star linebacker who is a phenomenal athlete on the flanks.

Linebacker is not valued as highly as other positions in football, so not many second-level defenders get No. 1 consideration. However, Jefferson could be a rare exception. The 6'2", 225-pounder can play just about every linebacker position in both a 4-3 and 3-4 scheme.

He possesses fantastic instincts and awareness, plus he works with a ton of range. Jefferson needs to improve his skills in coverage, but he has the quickness and pass-rushing ability to get to the quarterback.

It's almost impossible for a 5-star prospect to be underrated, but that could be the case for Jefferson, who is "only" No. 9 in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. However, the final No. 1 spot is attainable, as the Texan could reach the mark with a few strong camp outings this summer and a big senior season in the fall.

Byron Cowart is actually the No. 1 player in the Rivals 100, so he's already on top of one major recruiting board.

Cowart just has to continue moving forward to build a consensus, which shouldn't be too tough. At 6'4" and 250 pounds, he uses a sharp combination of power and short-area quickness to cause problems for offenses.

The Florida native can shoot upfield with a quick first step to attack passers. He has no issues converting his speed to power to walk blockers back into the pocket, plus he can reach ball-carriers well in pursuit.

Cowart's strength can also be seen when he sheds blockers after setting the edge, as well as when he works his way through guards during the snaps he plays inside. Finish No. 1 on every major recruiting board is in his sights.

Trent Thompson is the No. 1 prospect in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and it's going to take a lot for another recruit to move him out.

Thompson is a prototypical fit as a three-technique defensive tackle. The Georgia native is 6'4" and 292 pounds, and he uses his size and quickness to make plays. Thompson has a great motor, which can be seen when he slips through gaps to make tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

He jumps on top of blockers well as a pass-rusher, and his strength is also an asset. Thompson is the recruit who sits on the throne right now, and he may never get up.

I said the other day that Charlot was thicker than Kenny Bell. He looks good.

At 5'11" and 180 pounds, Kendall Sheffield is a 5-star cornerback from Texas who attends Fort Bend Marshall High School in Missouri City. He's an elite athlete who has exceptional speed, quickness and movement skills.

Sheffield can work well in all three general coverage alignments, plus he could have some value as a returner on special teams in college. The Texan is among the most coveted prospects in the nation, as the recruiting spotlight is always on him.

There's several pressing questions surrounding Sheffield's recruitment that need to be answered

I was thinking about Ledbetter today on my drive home (before this news) and I think he stays committed and signs with Alabama.

I don't have a reason to feel this way but my gut says it's true.

I hope we can keep him, but I'm not optimistic. Someone was saying that he is getting ready to transfer to a very pro-UGA high school.

Woodlawn-Shreveport defensive tackle T.D. Moton announced via Twitter Monday afternoon his commitment to Alabama after attending his first summer camp in Tuscaloosa.

Moton tweeted, "Committed to the University of Alabama #RollTide."

The 6-foot-3, 305-pound tackle is currently ranked No. 29 in NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune's Nifty 50. He had offers from around the SEC from LSU, Texas A&M and Arkansas, among others.

"It just looked like the best place for him," Woodlawn Coach Jerwin Wilson told AL.com. "It's a place he can develop as a person and as a player."

Moton orignally committed to Mississippi State in November, but decomitted in January.

Moton's commitment marks the 18th verbal commitment to Alabama from the 2015 class.

I don't see it either but he's spending more time in Tuscaloosa than he did Auburn.

Could mean nothing or it could mean a lot.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - One of the top visitors to Alabama over the last few days was Memphis offensive tackle Drew Richmond.

Richmond didn't go through camp, but did get a chance to visit with coaches and current players. Alabama's first summer camp started on Sunday and goes through Wednesday.

"I just liked it," said Richmond, who attends Memphis University School. "I was hanging out with the players. Everything's just family up there."

The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Richmond is rated as 4-star by the 247Sports composite rankings. He doesn't have a list narrowed down, but big schools are lined up with offers. His top 11 in March included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Memphis, North Carolina, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Tennessee and UCLA.

Most of the 247Sports Crystal Ball picks predict Richmond to choose Tennessee or Ohio State, but he says he hasn't narrowed anything down from that top 11. Many schools, including Alabama, have visions for him to step in as a dominating offensive tackle.

"They said I can come in and be a swing guy or start and play with Cam (Robinson)," Richmond said. "They said if I'm not playing right away, then hopefully I could be ready by midseason."

Richmond doesn't have any trips planned yet this summer, but will participate in this weekend's Rivals Five-Star Challenge and at The Opening in July.

"I just hope to do well so I can get my fifth star," Richmond said.

Richmond is committing on Sept. 9. That's the day his best friend, Michael Howse, died of swine flu in 2009. He's doing that to honor his memory.
