This right here is the reason Clemson has beaten us two out of the last three years. Their D-Line depth was tremendous and that allowed them to rotate in fresh players throughout the entire game.

We, on the other hand, trotted out a DE with one leg in the national title game and expected him to play 75% of the snaps.

I'm hoping we have finally restocked the D-Line "cabinet" with all of these young guys.

It would also be nice if more of our players stuck around for their Senior seasons, but I can't blame them for getting paid.

ETA: Just look at this group of underclassmen:

5-star Antonio Alfano
4-star Christian Barmore
4-star DJ Dale
4-star Justin Eboigbe
4-star Braylen Ingraham
4-star Phidarian Mathis
4-star Ishmael Sopsher
4-star Stephon Wynn Jr.
4-star Byron Young

Exactly. It was incredibly frustrating watching our coaching staff trott a clearly crippled Buggs out there the whole postseason with a healthy Ray sitting on the bench. At some point, you have to trust your younger talent and you live with a few mistakes. Hope to see a great rotation of 6-9 guys on the DL this year.

LINK ]Alabama practice report: First-team DB not participating By Matt Zenitz | mzenitz@al.com
quote:

Alabama practiced Tuesday afternoon, working outside on a sunny 91-degree day in Tuscaloosa.
Here are some notes from the media viewing period:

— First-team cornerback Josh Jobe was in a black non-contact jersey and was off to the side working on a stationary bike during the open portion of practice.

Miller Forristall (foot) wasn’t with the rest of the tight end group. Defensive lineman LaBryan Ray (ankle) and backup cornerback Nigel Knott (undisclosed medical issue) weren’t practicing.

— With Forristall out, Major Tennison was again first in line for tight end drills. Cameron Latu was second. Walk-on Giles Amos was third. It looked like Tennison was off to the side when the other tight ends were running routes with the quarterbacks.

Slade Bolden was second in line behind Henry Ruggs in one outside wide receiver line. Tyrell Shavers was second behind DeVonta Smith in the other outside receiver line. John Metchie and Xavier Williams were the third-team outside receivers. In the slot, it was Jerry Jeudy followed by Jaylen Waddle and Chadarius Townsend.

LINK ]A few of the interesting things Alabama football players said Tuesday By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com
quote:

The regular preseason schedule is starting to set in for Alabama’s camp. That means the interview room is back in business with three players stopping by Tuesday to chat it up with the finest local media members around.

A few of the interesting things we learned:

-- Offensive guard Matt Womack now has a buzz haircut. “I don’t know, new year, new me,” Womack said with a smile. “Camp’s hot so I figured I might as well go for it. I used to have long hair and figured I might as well go for the short hair.”

-- Womack’s mom, however, doesn’t love the new haircut.

-- On the field, the former starting right tackle (in the 2017 season) is still getting some reps on the outside but is the first team guard with Jedrick Wills and Alex Leatherwood firmly in starting roles at tackle.

-- There’s new competition on the offensive line from Florida State graduate transfer Landon Dickerson. It sounds like the former Seminole is fitting in well in his new locker room. “I love Landon,” Womack said. “He’s a great guy. As soon as he came in he was acting like himself. I met him a few times before he came. He’s a great guy. He’s a great player. I watched him [Monday] with pads on. Great stuff. I’m excited to see what he’s going to do.”

-- This is somewhat of a rebound season for Womack after injuries and the emergence of Wills at right tackle meant watching most of 2018 from the sideline. The senior spoke about that journey. “I broke my foot and had surgery and then tried to come back and I re-broke it,” he said. “It was really frustrating for me, but I think it really helped me grow as a person and a football player. I got to see it from the other side, how things I are. I really tried to have a different role on the team. I could help lift them up if they were down, so I thought I could help the team that way.”

-- Outside linebacker Anfernee Jennings can be soft spoken in front of the cameras but a few topics got him going Tuesday. Getting Terrell Lewis and Chris Allen back from ACL injuries is on the list. "Man, you don't even know,” Jennings said. “I'm beyond excited. With those guys, they're two different types of players - well, we're all different types of players - and we just capitalize off each other. It's gonna be fun."

-- Jennings actually led the team last year with 11 pass deflections. Asked if he reminds the defensive backs of this, his answer was brief. “Always,” Jennings said.

-- New outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri is a well-known personality with a high motor and intense practice expectations. Jennings called Sunseri “an OG.” Explaining that would only come off sounding as rigid and out of touch with the youth, so you can google that if there’s any confusion.

-- In terms of Sunseri’s style, Jennings seems to appreciate it. “He ain't the type of coach that's gonna sit there and pat you on the back all the time,” Jennings said. “He's gonna tell you when you mess up, he's gonna tell you when you're doing good and just keep it real with you at all times. For me as a player that's trying to get better each and every day, that's all you can ask for."

-- Freshman Kevin Harris is “fast, quick with a high motor,” Jennings said.

-- Defensive lineman Raekwon Davis was late and a little groggy making it up to the interview room. “Yeah,” he said. “I just woke up from a camp nap.” Days can be long so a quick rest came before the early-afternoon Q&A.

-- What has he learned so far in camp? “That it’s going to be hot, regardless,” he said. “It’s going to be hot so we just have to go out there and go to work.”

-- Davis also spoke about his role as a leader on this defense after playing behind some vocal veterans in his earlier years in Tuscaloosa. Asked about the young defensive linemen, he explained some of the adjustment they go through making the jump to college ball. “I think physically they’re prepared,” Davis said. “It’s just the little things, like when they get tired. But that’s my job, just to keep them going, just keep the energy going.”

-- Practice resumes Wednesday afternoon with Nick Saban stopping by for a news conference when they wrap up.

Alabama OLB Terrell Lewis: 'I’ve got a lot of time to make up' Tony Tsoukalas • BamaInsider @Tony_Tsoukalas
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Terrell Lewis has a lot to get off his chest. The outside linebacker made that clear in a colorful manner Sunday night as Alabama prepared to move into more contact-oriented practices this week.
Those type of statements aren’t just words — after spending the majority of the past two years on the sidelines, Lewis has a point to prove. Possibly the most lethal pass-rushing threat on Alabama’s roster, the shine from Lewis’ five-star status has been shadowed by a plague of setbacks. First came an elbow injury that kept him out of 10 games during the 2017 season. Then disaster struck again last fall as he tore his ACL, sidelining him for the entirety of last season while also limiting him for this year's spring camp.

LINK ]Henderson: Alabama Crimson Tide practice observations Kyle Henderson • BamaInsider @Rivals_Kyle
quote:

I wanted to provide some observations from Alabama’s third practice of the season. I was able to watch the defensive line as well as the offensive line today, something I have not been able to do over the first two practices. For starters, as you can see from the video highlights below, Raekwon Davis really looks to be pushing it and I truly feel this is because one: he knows it’s a money year for him and two: defensive line coach Brian Baker has already made an impact with the defensive line.
Remember, Saban just said that the new assistant coaches have done a good job at building relationships with the players, and I think this is a prime example of that. Freshman DJ Dale continues to impress and he actually looks like one of the most in-shape linemen out of the entire group. Great things planned for Dale and he’s repping right next to Davis which speaks volumes to me.

I don’t know how much Tevita Musika will play this year, but he’s working hard and has worked hard every time I’ve seen him. He strikes me as a don’t say much and work type of guy, I respect that. Phidarian Mathis is working his tail off and I think he’ll play a ton this season. He might not start, but who cares, it’s about depth in the trenches.

LINK ]Where will Alabama's most versatile DB play this season? Tony Tsoukalas • BamaInsider @Tony_Tsoukalas
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Shyheim Carter is everything Nick Saban looks for in a defensive back. The 6-foot, 191-pound senior is smart, versatile, and according to the head coach, “one of the top two or three players on the team from a knowledge standpoint.”

“He can answer every question in a meeting about every position,” Saban said. “He would be a great, great coach. I think that’s what creates a lot of diversity for him as a player, to be able to play multiple positions because he’s very smart and it means something to him. He’s spent a lot of time trying to learn this stuff. He prepares well for the games.”

According to Pro Football Focus, Alabama lined Carter up at Star in 84.2 percent of his defensive snaps last season. However, the versatile corner has also seen time at outside corner, safety and Money throughout his career. This fall, Carter has spent the majority of his time next to Xavier McKinney at the free safety position, a role he said he’s “adapting pretty well to.”

However, Carter’s malleability will likely continue to see him bounce around the secondary as camp progresses. On top of his reps at safety, he’s also returned to the Star position at times during Alabama’s opening practices.

It’s still somewhat hard to pinpoint how the Crimson Tide envisions using Carter. The emergence of sophomore cornerback Josh Jobe has seemed to push Patrick Surtain II inside to Star while Trevon Diggs remains out wide as the other cornerback. Meanwhile, Jared Mayden has also received plenty of first-team reps next to McKinney at safety, often leaving Carter on the outside looking in during practice.

Alabama runs the majority of its defensive sets out of the nickel package, leaving five defensive backs on the field. That inevitably creates an odd-man-out situation in the Crimson Tide’s starting secondary.

However, it's far too early to begin forming any type of solid conclusions. Over the next few weeks, Alabama will likely continue to shuffle its secondary, twisting the Rubix’s cube until a perfect picture emerges. Where that leave’s Carter is anyone’s guess.

“To be honest with you, I have no clue,” Carter said. “Coach Saban makes those type of calls. I don’t have nothing to do with any of that, so whatever call he decides to make, we’ll go with that.”

Still, it is hard to imagine Alabama lining up without Carter this season. The former four-star recruit is back to full strength after being limited in the spring while returning from a sports hernia injury. Last year, Carter was tied with Deionte Thompson as Alabama’s highest-graded defensive back last year, earning an 88.4 mark from Pro Football Focus. He finished tied for second with two interceptions — both of which were returned for touchdowns — and was also second on the team with 10 pass deflections.

Entering his final year with the program, Carter knows better than to rely on past success. His focus early during camp is centered solely around helping the team by “being a better player each and every day out there on the field.” That being said, perhaps the biggest boost he can provide this spring comes off the field.

Carter, who earned his degree from Alabama last week, now practically serves as a player-coach in the Crimson Tide’s secondary. The senior’s experience at every position combined with his extensive knowledge and understanding of Saban’s defense makes him the perfect learning tool for Alabama’s younger backs.

“I’m teaching them everything I know, the ins and outs of it,” Carter said. “The guys before that taught me that position when I was a young guy. Even though they are older now, just teaching them the small things because that’s what really matters.”

That mentoring role will prove particularly essential for Surtain, who is still coping with the changes from corner to Star in his second year with the program. Alabama experimented with working Surtain at Star last fall, but the switch proved to be too much to handle during his freshman season.

While Surtain admits he still has plenty to learn at the position, the change has come a bit easier the second time around. The sophomore said Carter’s guidance has played a big part in that progression.

“Shy is a vet," Surtain said. “Just him teaching me the ways helps me a lot, especially at the Star position being a new position.”

Last season, Alabama had to replace its entire dime secondary. The result was a pass defense which allowed 198.3 yards per game through the air, including a particularly porous 318.7 yards over the final three games. Given the Crimson Tide’s returning depth, those numbers should improve this year regardless of how Alabama lines up.

“Now that we have a lot of experienced guys that are in the backend we’re pretty confident,” Carter said. “We were confident last year, but this year we’re ready.”

Carter seems determined to make sure of that.

By Kirk McNair
quote:

Fifth-year senior offensive lineman Matt Womack has abandoned his big boy haircut, gone for the buzz cut.

“New year, new me,” he said.

And Womack hopes new and better things are in store for him as an Alabama football player, regardless of the coif.

Womack had a solid season in 2017, starting every game at right tackle in Bama’s national championship season. But last year was different. In the spring he suffered a broken foot and had to undergo surgery. He missed the first four games, made it back in time to see spot action in a reserve role (primarily at guard), and then re-broke the foot, limiting him to only seven games in all of 2018.

“It was really frustrating for me, but I think it really helped me grow as a person and a football player,” said Womack. “I got to see it from the other side, how things I are. I really tried to have a different role on the team. I could help lift them up if they were down, so I thought I could help the team that way.”

This year he hopes to help the team have the nation’s best offensive line, and it’s more likely he will do it at the guard position.

“I’m still practicing [part time] at tackle, but I really am liking guard a lot and think it’s going to be good for me in the future. So I’m happy where I’m at.”

He had previously worked at both guard and tackle in practice last year. “The coaches encouraged me to get that versatility, which is good. Last year I was ready to go at any position, and I feel like that is really going to help me in the future if I have to play another position.”

One advantage for Womack is that “my playbook has been the same for the last four or five years,” even with changes in offensive coordinators and offensive line coaches. “Everything’s pretty much the same for the O-Line. Coach Saban is still the coach here, so it doesn’t change that dramatically for us.”

He did say that all three of his offensive line coaches — Mario Cristobal (2015-16), Brent Key (2016-18), and now Kyle Flood — “have made me a better player and I’m very thankful for all three of them. Coach Flood is very strict on me. He’s demanding, and I really like that. I know he’s trying to push me to be the best I can be, so I really appreciate him being here.”

When Womack arrived at Bama from Magnolia Heights High School in Hernando, Miss. (he chose the Tide over LSU, Florida, Ohio State, and South Carolina), the 6-7, 325-pounder was “probably the tallest guy on the team. I figured coming to Alabama everyone was going to be my size. But now others have come in my size, so I’m not the only freak walking around out there.”

He said the only way his height has an effect on his play is that “I know that I have to keep my pads down because I do have those extra few inches.”

As for the difference between playing tackle and guard, Womack said that at guard he has to set more blocks as opposed to a tackle just cleaning them up. He said the line wants as many combination blocks as possible, the guard setting up the defensive lineman and the tackle coming across to knock him over. “It’s not going to affect me too much,” he said.

Womack said Alabama “definitely wants to establish a powerful run game. If a defense watches us coming off the ball and hitting people, then they are going to be thinking about that going into a game. So we really want a defense to see how powerful we are. We’re striving to be the best O-Line, and the only way to be the best O-Line is to do the best you can do.”

One area where he said the line has to help the offense improve this year is in Red Zone efficiency. “It’s definitely something we have to improve on,” he said of Bama’s offense inside the 20. “I don’t think we met our goal last year…in the Red Zone. The best teams are the ones that are going to finish and score in the tough times. I feel we have a very good chance to reach our goals and that we’re going to be a great team this year.”

He may even earn forgiveness from his mother. It seems she is the only one not pleased with her son's new short-hair look.

Alabama offensive lineman Landon Dickerson (Photo: Denon McMillan, 247Sports)
LINK ]FSU transfer Landon Dickerson a 'big' addition to Alabama OL By Charlie Potter
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama’s newest player is hard to miss on the practice field.

At 6-foot-6, 308 pounds, offensive guard Landon Dickerson is a massive addition to the Crimson Tide roster. He joined the team just before fall camp after graduating from Florida State, and not only have reporters been impressed by the mammoth lineman, but his teammates have taken notice, too.

“Yesterday, me and somebody else were standing there and were like, ‘Dude, you look really big today.’ I think it may have been Tommy Brown,” said redshirt senior right guard Matt Womack on Tuesday. “It’s because he has these cleats on, the cleats, I swear, are like this big. But we were like, ‘Dude, you look like you’re at least 6-6, 6-7 right now.’ But yeah, he’s big. He’s a big guy.”

Dickerson has participated in all three of Alabama’s preseason practices and is now one of 20 players for the Tide that are listed at 300 pounds or more, including 12 that are offensive linemen.

A former 5-star recruit, according to 247Sports, Dickerson started at right guard for the Seminoles in 2016 as a true freshman but injured his ACL after making seven starts, missing the remainder of that season. Dickerson returned to the field in 2017, but injuries plagued him once again, forcing him to miss the last nine games of the season. He played in two games during the 2018 season before missing the rest of the season with an injury and ultimately redshirting last year.

An original member of the 2016 recruiting class, Dickerson was rated the No. 4 offensive tackle and the No. 31 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

Womack met Dickerson during one of his visits to Tuscaloosa and is glad to now call him a teammate.

“I love Landon. He’s a great guy,” Womack said. “As soon as he came in, he was acting like himself. I met him a couple times before he actually came here. But he’s a great guy, he’s a great player. I watched him yesterday with pads on, and he was doing some really great stuff, so I’m excited to see what he’s going to do in the future.”

During Alabama’s open practice this past Saturday, which was his second in an Alabama uniform, Dickerson worked at right guard with the third-team offensive line. Nick Saban said that producing a total evaluation on Dickerson after only a few practices is difficult, but the former Florida State starter is a welcomed addition to Tuscaloosa and will compete during his first season.

“We like the fact that he’s played a lot of good football against a lot of good football teams. He’s got a lot of experience,” said Saban of Dickerson in Saturday’s Media Day press conference. “He’s big, he’s a strong guy. He will have a physical presence on the offensive line for us, in terms of his toughness.

“I think it’s too early to tell exactly where he can be the best fit for us, relative to the other players that we have. We want to coach all the offensive linemen that we have to try to get the best five out there. He certainly is a guy that’s competing for one of those spots.”

LINK ]Fall Camp Instant Analysis: Tuesday By Travis Reier 36:06
quote:

Since 2008, BamaOnLine.com's Instant Analysis has been a staple of Crimson Tide football coverage. That won't change in 2019, as we'll continue to provide Alabama fans with insight and interaction fresh from Tuscaloosa.

As for items we touched on during the latest edition of IA, they included:

* For all the talk about Tua's weight loss, what about Taulia's offseason?

* Upcoming scrimmages could feature wide range of combinations in a couple of areas.

* Is it important for Alabama to have a 1,000-yard rusher?

* Tons of interaction in the Q&A segment!

yada yada yada... basketball talk....
Injuries - Miller was outside with a member of training staff;
Pads - Wednesday or Thrs. Scrimmage on Saturday
Taulia - some good changes to his body, really showing the impact of Cochran's program.
Nick will have a Presser after practice tomorrow
Q&A
Ben Davis - 1st scrimmage will start showing where the depth chart will start shaking out - Benton - like Davis, seems to be up near the top...but has to keep Kaho and Moody and Lee
Trey Sanders - 3rd back? he has to earn it but very talented..the scrimmages on Saturdays should show
Surtain break out year? Both corners have a chance to become the very best in the country
the interesting piece is what will happen with STAR
Evan Neal - has a chance at left guard, (could happen esp if EEkiyor is better at C
esp with the potential that both Tackles could leave early this year
Kickers - only viewed punting so far. Will R is pretty solid, PK should be seen Saturday
Forristall - with his injury and Tennyson has been wearing hamstring apparatus since beginning, Do not need both of these guys hurt to begin. If so,Latu and Giles Amos would be the guys
1,000 yd rusher this year? each of the NC teams had a 1000 yd rusher, the years he didnt win NC did not have a 1000 rusher... stats they prove everything
Justin E. - big boy
Secondary - 6 very talented guys.
Saban's feel for this team - one of best conditioned teams since he has been here.
Landon Dickerson - in the mix for Guard..but unless Womack gets hurt not sure anyone will move him out.
Will LB - who will it be if not Josh
TE - will there be enough depth or will there be anymore injuries>
DL - depth is looking great

Alabama Holds Fourth Practice of Fall Camp Tuesday Afternoon - Tua Tagovailoa named to the 2019 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama put in another two-hour practice in helmets and shoulder pads for its fourth practice of 2019 fall camp, working outdoors at the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields on Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday's session marked the fourth day of work for Alabama and continues a stretch of eight practices before the team's first intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 10. The Crimson Tide will take part in a total of 20 practices during fall camp leading up to the season opener against Duke in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Ga. The matchup between the Tide and Blue Devils is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

In the morning on Tuesday, Tua Tagovailoa was named to the 2019 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding Polynesian college football player that epitomizes great ability and integrity. The reigning 2018 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award winner, Tagovailoa, is among 62 players from 32 different FBS schools to be named to the preseason watch list. Tagovailoa is the Crimson Tide's lone representative.

Jeudy has NFL future, but priority is Alabama’s 2019 season By TideSports - August 6, 2019 By Tyler Martin/Special to The Tuscaloosa News
quote:

The season after winning the Biletnikoff Award, an honor for the nation’s best wide receiver, would normally bring immense pressure to any other receiver to duplicate that performance.

Alabama receiver Jerry Jeudy is not any other receiver.

“I do not feel that there is a lot of pressure to repeat last year,” Jeudy said during media day Saturday. “Any pressure I have I put it on myself. The pressure is me showing up to practice each and every day and getting better.”

The south Florida native caught 68 passes for 1,315 yards and 14 touchdowns a season ago. Those numbers and his elusive speed, lighting quick lateral movements, and highlight-reel jukes have him shooting up near the top for the 2020 NFL Draft.

Jeudy ranks No. 1 on Mel Kiper’s Big Board with fellow teammate Tua Tagovaila coming in at No. 4. Before next spring’s draft, Jeudy has more work to do in 2019 and says he is not focused on what the experts are saying about him, for now.

“It is important to keep that out of your mind right now,” Jeudy said. “If you have a bad game or a bad year, that really does not matter anymore. I am just focusing on being the best player I can be in practice and in games. If I can be consistent with that, then (NFL dreams) will come in the end.”

Jeudy’s main responsibility now is preparing for what the 2019 season has in store. During the offseason, he posted a video on his Twitter account of him working on his route running skills with Oakland Raiders star Antonio Brown in their home state of Florida.

“I would not say that I work on those (jukes and skill moves) too much,” Jeudy said. “That is something I was just born with. I just stick to the basics and work on the fundamentals that I have to work on.”

Alabama defensive back Trevon Diggs said Jeudy has been showing up in his dreams lately.

“I had a dream a few days ago that someone was going to ask me who the best receiver in the SEC was,” Diggs said. “I just kept thinking about Jerry Jeudy and Henry Ruggs III. They are both very good and they have their own style and it makes our defensive backs very versatile when covering them.”

Last month at SEC Media Days, Jeudy was asked about where he would rank himself among all-time Crimson Tide wide receivers and he put himself fourth behind Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, and Calvin Ridley. If he has a monster junior season, as expected, then he could see himself at the top of that list sooner rather than later.
