Pretty funny that Most Bama fans wanted Gottfried gone for after missing the NCAAT two years in a row, and he went on to make the NCAAT the next four year at NC State, getting to two sweet sixteens.
Meanwhile we have been to what, two NCAA tournaments in the 10 years since he resigned and haven't made it past the second round.

What's the funny part? Wanting Gottfried gone was still the right decision.

That he had a lot more success without us than we have had without him.

Yeah these are all great examples of why the older, slightly less stupid, me withholds judgment on almost all incoming basketball recruits until I have actually seen them play. I want to believe that Oats is significantly better at player development than anyone we have had since Wimp, but I will actually believe it when I see it.
^The truth
I want to get excited about all of our new guys this season (Quinerly, Gary, Rojas, Ambrose-Hylton, Ellis, Bruner, Miles, Primo), but, let’s be real. It’s Alabama Basketball. 2 of them might be serviceable, 1 might even be pretty good. There will be some Daniel Giddens, Avery Jr, Michael Kessens, Ar’Mond Davis type duds in there as well, we all know deep down it’s going to happpen. I’m hoping this is the group that busts on the scene and changes our history.

I was convinced he was going to be the next Mark Eaton based on nothing more than he was really tall, fairly big, and white.
Interestingly, while doing a little research for this post I found out he's still playing pro basketball in Sweden.

Just three classes ago we got Sexton, Petty, and Jones who all have turned out to be good. Last years class we got Quinerly, Rojas, Shackelford, Gary, and we have only seen one of them play so the jury is still out on that one but I suspect we are gonna have more than one good player in that class too, and this class, which is the best one we have had since that Sexton/Petty class.
I agree with you that at least one will probably be a flop, but we I would bet more than one of them ends up being good.
Our team for next year looks pretty loaded if you're being realistic and not a pessimist.

I knew Gottfried was done when that 2006-2007 team that was loaded missed the tournament. Just a complete meltdown, started like 13-1 or something and completely choked.
In the end he cared more about banging coeds than winning basketball games.

I'm still wearing the Crimson colored glasses. I remember Wimp's recruiting. He missed on some, but not a lot and he damn sure knew how to use and develop what he got. He just had that Bobby Cox gift in the Dance to run into the hot team at the wrong time. I don't think Wimp was a great motivator, and by that I mean his teams played even keel emotionally most of the time. No big highs, but no big lows. It worked 95% of the time, but he would always run into the hot, emotional Cinderalla mid-major like Loyola Marymount, Providence, or somebody and they would be sky high and beat Bama. It was very frustrating because most of the time, you felt like the better team lost.

Gottfried got lazy and started screwing coeds on golf courses. Hard to keep him when those kind of things start taking place
Posted on 4/22/20 at 4:24 pm to Cobrasize
I mean, in his defense, who wouldn’t wanna screw coeds on golf courses?
Posted on 4/22/20 at 4:28 pm to Cobrasize
Do you guys think he wouldve been here longer had the golf course incident not happened?
Posted on 4/22/20 at 4:32 pm to CrimsonFever
It had gotten stale at the end and he wasn’t recruiting at nearly the same level he had been. He Got LAZY.

Never made it on the golf course. Does the park on River Road qualify?

Seemed to be a pretty consistent recruiter. His class ranks from 2003 to 2010 were
2003: 17th
2004: 18th
2005: 12th
2006: 36th
2007: 20th
2008: 16th
2009: 16th
2010: 20th
His recruiting classes at NC State were ranked
2012: 14th
2013: 10th
2014: 18th
2015: 58th
2016: 5th

I long for the staleness of making the NCAAT 5 out of 7 years.

Grant was responsible for the 2010 class.
And if you go back and re-rank those the difference would be pretty stark on a lot of them. 2003 & 2004 for example had Davidson and Steele + another 5 guys (including multiple top 100 recruits) who transferred out having never made any contribution to the team. Those are top 20 classes on paper but the evaluations and roster management were fricking awful.

He had his faults but was far better than anyone we have had since aside from Oats hopefully. Gottfried had a 12 season run where he made the NCAAT 9 times and went to an elite 8 and two sweet sixteens. If Oats can do that here over the next 12 years I'll be very happy.

He was a better recruiter, especially when it came to front court players. Gottfried is a terrible coach and the last few years of his tenure were absolutely miserable between the extreme underachieving, constant transfers, and Steele's injuries. I really don't understand why anyone would wax poetic about those days.
