Nah, Saban will extend our protection to the basketball program.

So now that it's official, what do we have to look forward to next with basketball?
1. Johnson assembling his assistant coaches
2. Filling up the recruiting class as best as possible
3. Off season workouts/practice?
This will be the first time I have ever paid attention to our MBB program, so I'm not to familiar with the timeline.

You sure were adamant about firing coaches these past couple years for not having paid attention to the program...

There will be a press conference soon (I think I saw Wednesday). The staff should follow along shortly because Signing day is the 15th. Not sure when JUCO guys have to make a decision.
I think they can have sort of workouts/practice during the upcoming months for a week or two. Only with the guys on campus already of course.
Then you would basically have to hope to hear things from some insiders about pick up games over the summer.
I assume we will see a ton of CAJ sitting court side at AAU games over the summer.
Bryant will have to help me on this. Every 4 years a team is allowed to travel overseas and play exhibition games. I wouldn't be surprised if that is something CAJ would like to do, depending on if Grant used that option within the last couple of years.
Then practice starts and you have Midnight Madness before the exhibition games tipoff.

One thing is I am super interested to see how the NBA changing to this pace and space basketball effected has potentially effected how he wants to coach.
He is really close with Pop, who has nearly perfected D'antoni's style.
You can tell how it effected Steve Kerr in his first season. A ton of people thought he was gonna run some version of the triangle.

AJ Nets squads were terrible. He had that one year that Deron got traded to them and stayed injured, and the other year Lopez breaks his glass foot and goes down for the year again.
Both of his superstar players were made of glass. I don't know what they expected from him, and then they fire him early during the next season. Nets are a terrible franchise. Just look at all those picks that they traded for getting Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett.

Even Cal couldn't take it there.

Yeah I have gone out of my way to defend his time with the Nets. Considering what we know now about the regression of Deron Williams and the up and downmess of Brook Lopez it makes less sense. Deron Williams went bitching to the press about Avery's system and wanted it to be more like Utah's, which makes a ton of sense considering how much his time in Utah inflated his career.
I saw a video of Chuck discussing the firing and he said it made sense because they should have been a top 3 team in the East at the time. Looking back that is just ludicrous. They weren't even close to that after adding KG and Pierce.
Jason Kidd basically forced his way out of Brooklyn because of their FO and he will likely finish 3rd in COY this season.

Bama went to Europe a couple of months before the '13-'14 season.

I think practice starts 10/15. Midnight Madness normally is at 12:00am on that date or the first Friday after the 15th.

Okay. I knew we went at some point, but wasn't sure when.

Yeah I'm dumb. Got it backwards.

Another thing I haven't thought about is that we may be getting a 30 second shot clock next season. Probably an easier adjustment for a guy coming from the NBA.
Posted on 4/7/15 at 6:33 am to RTR America
Also heard consideration of an approximate 14 second shot after an offensive rebound.
Of course in years past, this would not be something Grants teams would need to concern themselves with.

I was thinking of a new shot clock with less time after an O rebound just last night
Posted on 4/7/15 at 7:04 am to mrbroker
That is a bit out there. Even the NBA resets the shot clock after an offensive rebound.
I just desperately want the shot clock to be shortened. These teams that spend 35 seconds on every possession make me want to rip my hair out.

I would like to see 30 second shot clock and then a 20 second new shot clock after an O rebound. Speed the damn game up and see more scoring

Also from that link:
quote:
"I've talked to a lot of the parents on the AAU circuit over the past several years so a lot of the kids that are 2015 kids, I saw a lot of those kids when they were in 10th grade," Johnson said. "I saw a lot of those kids when they were eighth, ninth and 10th grade when my son was in the 11th grade on the circuit."
Relationships were formed.
"I've probably taken pictures with their parents," Johnson said. "And I've probably heard from half of those parents 'You would make a great college coach,' or 'If you ever coach in college, I'm sending my son to you.'

The more I read about CAJ the more excited I get. His dynamic personality is built for the college game. Recruiting is about relationships and this guy is impossible not to like!
