This! We half-arse everything and think it will do. . .
We half arse it all, don’t take it seriously, and nobody enforces it. We’re on the honor system and as a country our honor sucks. The European and Asian countries have very few people that if asked to comply with public health measures refuse to. We have a shite ton. And all of us pay the price for our rebellious streak.
Yeah, it's really been disheartening.
I lived in Italy for 8 years and one compliment I heard over and over for Americans was the degree to which they would go out of their way to help each other out and rise to the occasion during a crisis.
There's certainly still a lot of that going on but unfortunately it seems far from the prevailing spirit of the country.
What you say about European countries and compliance is kind of ironic. Italians are generally much more rebellious and "every one for themselves" than Americans -- to a frustrating degree of even refusing to stand in a line of three at the post office without trying anything possible to skip to the front.
When the Covid crisis started to unfold in the north, my Italian friends were saying that central and southern Italy was doomed because "unlike here in the USA" the authorities will never convince people to stick to any measures long enough to slow the spread.
Yet, Central and Southern Italy did just that and have fared better than almost anywhere else in Europe or the US.
Italians bitched and complained a lot and I mean a lot, especially since they actually enforced stay at home measures, masks etc with the police and national guard ticketing.
However, it seems enough people saw what was happening in the north that they mainly just complained but still did what was asked.
Here, we had -- and still have -- just as many people digging full time for any little piece of poorly entered data as if it's some kind of "evidence" that it's a hoax as we do people actually taking adult steps to deal with it.

Here's something potentially interesting: Montgomery's case rate has been cut in half in the past month. They have the lowest month-over-month hospitalizations since April. If you'll recall, Montgomery was the first real hot spot in the most recent spike, starting in late May (remember the whole national news story about Montgomery hospital bed availability?). Now, the mayor predictably attributes this to the mask order, but I started poking around the Alabama state site and noticed that case rates in surrounding counties are extremely high, so I'm curious if we are starting to reach herd immunity in some places.
For example, Lowndes County's confirmed case rate per 100k is 4,349.2. The CDC estimates actual cases are approximately 10x confirmed cases. Based on that, estimated actual COVID-19 cases in Lowndes County would be 43,492 per 100k, or 43.492% of the population. Interestingly, recent publications are showing that herd immunity thresholds may be far lower than originally thought; this study says 43%. This is due to a number of behavioral factors. Other studies are showing it may be even lower due to a large segment of the population (children) acting as a brake rather than a vector for the spread.
This, as well as the data from places like New York, seems to suggest we may be getting close to being over the hump in some places, but it could be a rocky month or two.
That would be nice about Mgy but I think it is more just peak and valleys that you are going to see.
And Montgomery’s mask order was a joke. There was zero enforcement unless the business owner did it. Unfortunately I have to make regular trips to that cesspool and noticed no real difference in mask use vs Elmore county where there was no requirement before meemaw’s order.
I worked my side job there today and grabbed lunch at a McDonalds. Decided to walk in instead of sitting in a drive through line. 2 other customers - no masks. The six employees I saw all wore masks. 4 had it below their noses and 1 had it on his chin. The lone dude wearing it correctly probably felt really lonely.

You can't debunk hard stats with anecdotal evidence. Do you have any data showing the mask ordinance was ineffective?

Well on the other side of the stats debate, Rebekah Jones, the lady in charge of the Florida numbers that got fired is filing a Whistleblower lawsuit against DeSantis for trying to deflate the positive numbers. So where does the truth lie?

JeffCo.
Birmingham's had a mask order since May 1st and the entire county since the last few days of June. At the start of July they had about 3,500 total cases. They've got almost 8,000 now and is once again the state's hotspot.

I don't buy any of this that masks and social distancing aren't effective. It's been proven it is effective when done right. When you half-arse all aspects of it, yeah, it doesn't work.

What’s sad is that none of us know what to believe. It’s ridiculous.

Even my favorite slackjawed redneck moron Brian Kemp admitted today that masks definitely work after filing a lawsuit against the city of Atlanta for requiring people to wear masks. He's so pathetic it makes me want to kick anyone who voted for him in the shins. I mean yeah Abrams was no peach herself, but goddamn he's one sorry, stupid motherfricker.

Elections have consequences. The whole country is finding that out now. Nobody's worried about issues and competency at the voting booth anymore, its all about identity politics. Stupid shite.
People can say what they want about Kay Ivey but at least she has a conscious and a brain of her damn own.

I agree with this completely. As far as masks go, my biggest issue other than improperly worn, etc is that far too many folks still have a false impression that they are most vulnerable out shopping in some retail store so the mask has them covered and that isn’t true.
Literally every single person I know that has tested positive got it from a family member, friend, or coworker. The guy we transported yesterday who was in a very bad way got it from his daughter- a nurse in a Montgomery hospital. Risk factors out the arse but hey, they’re family so it’s ok......

I know what the thread title says. Im referring to the virus itself. It is now it's own political hot button issue by how it's being handled.
If the politics of it can't be discussed, we may as well lock the thread and not start any new ones because with school starting, its only going to get worse.
Politics has been sprinkled throughout the thread by the way.

You can choose to include politics in the discussion, but if you cross the line be prepared to take a break.

It has been and this isn’t aimed at anyone in particular but I’m fricking sick and tired of everything having politics injected into it. It’s like damn middle school teenage girls; there has to be an agenda and drama to everything. Can we leave the damn political bullshite out and just take something at face value? I mean, Jesus, we’ve politicized a pandemic and the case figures for it. Does that not speak to how broken and disgusting our society has become?
