I think there is a good chance Texas is a lot better, Memphis returns everyone, so they should be better, and UMass has a new coach in Matt McCall who did good things at Chattanooga.

Vanderbilt had one of the best OOC schedules last year, so let's compare with them.
Power
Marquette
Butler
Minnesota
Mid-Major(I'm defining Mid-Major here as a conference that could feasibly get an at large tournament bid)
Dayton
MTSU
Santa Clara
Minor
Bucknell
Belmont
Norfolk State
Tennessee State
Chattanooga
High Point

Right now ours if we assume everything is true will be
Power
Arizona
Texas
Oregon State
Mid-Major
Memphis
UMass/BYU
Minor
We'll play two of the teams in the Barclays Center campus site bracket. 2016 that group was Towson, Stony Brook, Hampton, and Robert Morris.
Also, I have to think we'll be in the Big12 SEC challenge during the conference season.

Texas may have lost there only 2 legit players to the draft. They both didn't hire agents so I guess there's a chance they return. Regardless they ended at 157 in the RPI rankings so they would have to improve a ton for them to be a quality team
UMASS is at a 193 rpi and lost their best player to the draft.
Memphis could be a decent bit better next year, but their far and away best player has yet to make up his mind on returning. They would also have to improve a ton as they were at a 121 RPI.

Yep. Can't see those 3 helping our RPI next season.
The names stand out, but they have been underperforming.
They'll play lights out against Bama though.

I think if you add in Arizona as suggested, another good OOC tournament game, and a Big12 SEC challenge game it becomes a solid schedule. I'd also like to see us play Chattanooga, MTSU, ETSU, or Belmont in Huntsville this year.

The power schools Vandy played dwarf ours. Oregon State is one of the worst teams in the entire nation regardless of level. Texas was 11-22. The Arizona game would be great, but it's yet to actually happen. All three of theirs that you listed were legit tournament teams.
Their Mid-Majors dwarf ours. Regardless of them getting a new coach, UMass was still terrible and they lost their best player. They should probably be a Minor. Memphis wasn't terrible, but they were extremely mediocre at best. BYU should be pretty good. Dayton was a 7-seed and MTSU were good enough to get an at-large bid.
Even a couple of their Minors had decent RPIs. Belmont was at a 60. Bucknell was at 63.
This all isn't to say that our schedule won't be good next year, but right now it's not the least bit impressive. I won't be upset if it doesn't improve either, if we just win.

Most definitely.
Loved the idea of playing in Huntsville, I hope it's something we continue. MTSU vs Bama there would be great. Really, any of those 4 at VBC would be fun.

I agree. I was just using Vandy as a comparison because I think they had a top ten schedule before conference play and the Iowa State game. I wasn't? saying ours measured up.
I do think Texas will be significantly better. They add what is currently the number 1 class in the Big XII (Kansas will probably jump them though) and are only a season removed from a tournament appearance. They didn't gel this year, but I don't think one awful season means Shaka Smart can't coach.

I think that could be the problem. Not a lot of room for error so far with our schedule. Need to add some premier teams to bump it up as Tom mentioned.
Would be a travesty to win 22+ games and get left out. We've seen this playout before with Gottfried. That team was definitely a tournament team from what I remember as well, but their SOS was a joke.

I've never been a big fan of Shaka. I thought Texas would've been much better off hiring Avery. They do have a good class coming in, but they don't have any 5* stud that I could see coming in right away and being the leader that they need.

Thanks for all the talk and updates guys. If we can keep this thing going until basketball season tips off, I'll be a pretty happy guy.

Memphis is going to lose their best player in Dedric Lawson and have a dreadful recruiting class. They could be worse.

I don't see any reason why we can't.
Seems like Avery has done a great job of promoting the program and gotten a lot more people invested in it.

I didn't realize Dedric Lawson was that good that he'd be leaving already. Since he doesn't shoot the three, his position is kind of dead in the NBA. Where's he supposed to be drafted?

I don't follow the team too closely but this is what one of the guys who covers the team wrote:
quote:
Lawson is not a player who can dramatically improve his draft stock with another year in college. He’s already putting up massive numbers (19.5 points and 10.1 rebounds) on the court. But NBA teams are skeptical because Lawson doesn’t have the crazy athleticism they value. He’s not a great leaper. He’s not explosive. Another year in college won’t change any of that.
From what I've heard it sounds like a done deal unless there is some major change of heart. Apparently the situation between his father, who was hired by Pastner, and Tubby is a bit tense.
Apparently the 3rd Lawson brother looks like a future lottery pick so Tubby who is notoriously against playing "the game" may just have to for a few more years.

Adam Zagoria posted this. Idk if it's true or an April Fools joke...
Edit: He said it's not a joke

Auburn's Mustapha Heron is considering transferring. Will make a decision in the next two weeks, per source.

Damn. Wish he didn't choose Auburn. Could have had a shot with him otherwise.
Edit: Could be that Heron is the one pulling the April Fool's Day joke.
