LINK ]Sting Factor: Ranking February's Power Five decommitments (Rivals | segments)

Anthony Richardson
The month of February began with the class of 2019 wrapping up and officially signing, and the attention quickly turned to the class of 2020.
With the the first opportunity to sign less than 10 months away, some prospects are already rethinking their early commitments and heading back on the market to test the waters.
With that in mind, we look back at the February decommitments at Power Five programs and rank them in order of “sting” to the programs that lost the verbal commitments.

Jacquelin Roy decommits from LSU
Roy, a lifelong LSU fan and Baton Rouge native, committed to the Tigers at the start of his junior season, essentially putting an end to his recruitment before it really started to heat up. Things seemed to be going well between the two sides before he surprised many by announcing his decommitment late Thursday evening. Schools such as Texas A&M and Texas are involved and it would be a major loss for the Tigers to see a talented player from their backyard slip out of state - or even worse, end up playing for another SEC West team.
Sting Factor: 9
Eta: Jaquelin Roy didn't make the visit.

Carson Beck decommits from Alabama
The Tide targeted Beck very early in the process and landed his commitment in June of 2017. At that time, Beck was virtually unknown on the national scene, but after a strong junior season his stock rose in the eyes of several other schools, including Florida and Miami. That new interest from the Sunshine State schools, combined with the number of coaching changes for the Tide, led to Beck decommitting.

Keyvone Lee decommits from Florida
One of the nation’s top running backs, Lee committed to the Gators last spring with little fanfare. Since then, he’s become a name high on the board of several college programs, including LSU and Alabama. Lee said that he is still high on the Gators, but wants to head into his senior year uncommitted. While the Gators are still involved, losing his commitment and having to battle with several other major programs is a blow.

Anthony Richardson decommits from Florida
Richardson committed to Florida over the summer and seemed poised to be the face of the Gators' 2020 class. But the Gators continued to recruit other prospects at the position, including Beck, while Richardson was being recruited by other programs as well. Assuming Florida can land Beck, losing Richardson won’t be that big of a deal. But if Beck were to go elsewhere and Richardson ends up at somewhere like Georgia, this could end up stinging even worse.

Seattle (WA) Garfield five-star outside linebacker Sav'ell Smalls announced his top 12 shortly after National Signing Day as attention turned fully to his class.
Smalls named Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Miami, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M, Washington and Washington State as his top 12.
At Pylon 7v7 in Nevada last weekend, where the pass-rusher earned Dream Team honors because of his coverage ability, Smalls broke down his top 12 and what put them in that group.

Alabama: "It's a football factory. They send them out, they get them developed and get them ready for the league."
Clemson: "When I went down there, there was such a family vibe. It's a great football town. Everyone there cares about football."
Florida: "I love Coach (Dan) Mullen. He’s one of my favorite coaches. They know how to develop and they have a real good scheme in how they’ll use me."
Florida State: "I have a teammate there (TreShaun Harrison) and Coach (Willie) Taggart is one of my favorite coaches, ever since he was at Oregon. It was one of my most favorite places I visited. There is a different vibe and culture."
Miami: "They offered late, but they said I could play tight end or linebacker, whatever side i like. The opportunity to have options like that, plus all the documentaries about the program has my attention."
Ohio State: "Coach Larry Johnson develops defensive linemen like no other. He always has some top line and pass rusher and thats what I'm trying to play. I know he’d get me right."

Oklahoma: "They just got Coach (Alex) Grinch, and if he can turn Oklahoma into a defensive powerhouse like it is an offensive powerhouse, they’ll be scary."
Oregon: "I love Coach (Mario) Cristobal, he brings an SEC vibe to the program. I love what he’s doing, everyone bought in and I like what I’ve seen so far."
Texas: "I love Coach (Tom) Herman. He turned around the program real quick. Everyone is hyped on Texas again. Austin is a great place and great has a great business program."
Texas A&M: "They have a great business program as well. Jimbo (Fisher) flew all the way across the country to see me. He's told me all the ways he’d use me and all their different schemes. It was a lot more defensive wise than I expected."
Washington: "UW is the home school and they're showing the most love. I know them the best and I'm the most comfortable there."
Washington State: "They said I could play offense as well. It's the other state school and I want to check them out for sure."

There is likely another list trim coming towards the end of summer and he'll work on setting visits from there.
"I'm not taking any officials in the spring, so I'll probably trim it to five or to six before August," said Smalls. "I don't know if I'll take an official to Washington, so I'll probably trim it to six, take five official visits and an unofficial to Washington."
Smalls said he's also leaning towards graduating in December and enrolling in January. "I'm hoping to early enroll but I'm still trying to figure it out," said Smalls.
A five-star by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Ranking, Smalls is ranked No. 7 nationally in the composite while 247Sports has him as the No. 4 player nationally in his class, and he's the No. 1 outside linebacker by both 247Sports and the Composite.

It’s a Mississippi kid.. but name isn’t in the transfer portal as of now. That’s why I want to find out more and from another source. I’m sending out texts to see if it’s any real traction or just a drunk coach talking..lol

Still surprised Chris Cunningham from VT hasn't got a look.
He's a blocker with soft hands, perfect replacement for Hale Hentges.
