It's better than recruiting players who suck. Amirite?

Better to suck at football than to suck at football and also be stupid.

Y'all should be giving those guys a degree in Low-Paying Manual Labor. At least it would prepare them for their eventual lives.

Given the current job market, I'd wager most degrees amount to this anyway.

Probably. I have 2 kids graduating this year, and will have more data later.

My brother graduated from UGA 4 years ago with a Landscape Architecture degree and spent two years looking for work (all he got were some brief contract jobs with one of his former professors) before he went to H&R Block and learned how to do taxes.

A good friend of my son is graduating next month with that same degree. I hope he has better luck.

It sucked for him, but now he's a manager of a branch and he's learning the ropes to start his own tax business with our dad, who is a CPA and is about to retired from the government later this year.

So yeah.. it's working out for him, but he's not working in the field that he got his degree in.

Good luck to all recent and future grads!

It really depends on your career field/degree specialty IMHO. I got my double major in Business Management and Organizational Leadership b/c I wanted to have a degree that would translate into just about any career. When you specialize it really does narrow down your opportunities. Get the training that all or most companies need. Like accounting for instance. You may not ever do accounting but all businesses have it, need it, and value it in an employee.

For the Contracting field (which is what I'm in) anyone with a business related degree can find tons of work that pay well anywhere in the US and OCONUS. I knew nothing about contracts or negotiating large amounts of money but once I got my foot in the door they sent me to the schools required to gain the certifications I needed.

Land Scaping engineers really either work with Golf Courses/Country Clubs or some can do well hooking up with an Architecture type firm. Again IMHO. It's just very specific.

That said no matter where you go you definitely need people skills. I almost had to become a company stalker. Go visit the people in the HR offices. Gain a relationship with them. Ask questions about what they are looking for, what's coming open, etc. Ask them if they can connect you with people you can contact that can give you information. GREASE THE SKIDS SO TO SPEAK! If that doesn't work my buddy swears by headhunters. He uses them and they haven't failed him yet. Says they are worth it.
