Hiring Ray Goff instead of Erk Russell when Vince Dooley retired. No telling how many National Championships that cost us!

this. LSU's final three was Spurrier, Shanahan and Archer. 2/3 chance you're gonna hire a fricking great football coach

Urban Meyer over Steve Spurrier...lulz

but seriously, Zook was in over his head, but he was a sick recruiter so nowhere near as bad some of the other blunders mentioned

Hiring Fran instead of Urban Meyer wasn't one of A&M's better moves.

How exactly did that happen? Did he push himself, or why in the world would A&M see him as a great coach after only 2 years at Bama, and the 2nd year wasn't even that great. All he did here the first year was beat Auburn.
I think that's why we owe A&M a little slack, because they did the best favor for us that anyone has ever done. Of course, they didn't mean to, but it just happened that way. I loved when Paul Bryant Jr. told Fran that if he got on that plane, he hoped the interview went well, because he would not be allowed back in Tuscaloosa. Of course, then Fran said that his family was not safe here and he felt threatened, but even feeling this way, he left his daughter here while he and his wife went to Texas for the interview. He is such a little sissy man. He couldn't face the press, and worst of all he couldn't face his players of which had stayed when they had a chance to leave and not lose eligibility.
A&M, thank you so much for taking Fran. Off hand, I would say that Texas and Alabama are two states where a little "sissy man" is really not appreciated. I am so glad that ya'll fired him, and it was not his decision to leave.
Where is "Little Fran" Now, and his lovely wife(ugh).

This still baffles me.

What made Joe Dean not hire Steve Spurrier and Mike Shanahan and go with freaking Mike Archer??

Didn't Mack Brown and Spurrier want the LSU job at one time. For Bama I guess Bobby Bowden I think had wanted the Bama job at some point in history. I realize what he became but when he had fla ST at their prime it was pretty impressive.

Zook can't really be used because he was a stop gap and not picked over anyone with a pulse.

4. Perkins (he wasn't terrible, just inconsistent)
5. Shula
6. Franchione
7. DuBose
NR. Price

Good list but if we're judging straight coaching, I think you've got to put Fran above Shula.

Edited to add - I'd also put a lot of space between 6-7 and might even consider moving Price up a notch because DuBose certainly did more to hurt the program than Price.

Fran over Urban.

Though at least now we don't have people on death row by having had Urban as the HC. So there is that.

Why are Arkansas fans so hard on Nutt. He was 75-48. Finished first or tied for first three times. It's not like any other coach has made you any better in the SEC. Sure Field, Holtz, and Broyles did well at Arkansas but you aren't in the SWC anymore. Dude did alright at Arkansas. Won 2 SEC coaches of the year even. I can think of plenty of worse decisions you have made off the top of my head. Jack Crowe destroyed you after Hatfield left. Then Danny was awful. Nutt brought Arkansas back from the dead. I don't get the anger.

Without that first season of Ford's players, he wouldn't have made it 4 years. Then the best backfield in BCS era kept him around another 4. The guy was terrible and showed up for 1 surprise win a season.
It took two seasons with Petrino to have us top 10 and in a BCS game. Only thing holding us back then was the unbelievable bias that the conference promotes. Petrino in 4 seasons > Nutt in 10. And if he was even a decent coach, he would be coaching at at least a BCS school.

I've heard rumors that Saban wanted back at LSU after Miami but LSU chose to keep Miles rather than buy out his contract. Miles at least is a very fine coach in his own right

That's a program defining mistake right there. Like, wtf happened?

INSANE. Shula was THE worst coach since Coach Bryant hands down. As in no contest. I can't believe there are people that think otherwise. The list is:

Since Bryant...

1. Saban
2. Stallings
3. Franchione
4. Perklns
5. Curry
6. Dubose
7. Shula

Fran was a very good coach, well at least he was at Bama, but is an arse

Saban wanted back into college. I doubt he had a preference other than a historically successful BCS team with deep pockets

I'd hire Shula to a 5 year contract rather than let Dubose coach half a season.
