Rather off topic but here's a fun fact.

Joe dean didnt want to pay nick Saban his asking price. He is quoted in one of the history of LSU football books " I told Mark we don't have to pay him that, I can get him for cheaper than what he's asking". Emmert basically told him to stfu and pay him what he wants. Thank God

Point being the old boy network that use to run many SEC athletic departments were total fricking disasters

Yeah, Frank got lucky by getting Sutton from Creighton and Richardson from Tulsa, both were hired on the cheap, both are HOF coaches.

Self could have been had from Illinois to replace Richardson, but ignoring the whole lawsuit/racism issue, him coaching at a "major" school was probably a negative in Frank's eyes as would have been his salary.

Frank was OK with paying the 7th or 8th highest salary in the SEC for a football coach, the only requirement for him was previous HC experience.

Well that is rather lucky landing those two early and not having to throw the bank at them

Nowadays that will get you 7th or 8th place in the conference

Yeah, but Frank thought that was the program's ceiling.

Which doesn't make since as he was told by Barnhill he had to have HC experience the first time he applied for the HC job here, so he ends up at Mizzou for one year before we had an opening again and he was hired. He says its because he saw the potential in a one state one program school, which Mizzou has that too, LSU, Nebraska, Penn State and I guess that's about it, He said he wanted the Arkansas job most of all.

This defeatist attitude and the fact that any time a coach had success or appear to be heading to greater heights than he achieved he ended up having to go separate ways from the coach as he couldn't just leave them alone. (Holtz, Hatfield, Richardson) This has led to the theory that Frank was more interested in preserving his legacy as a coach than having the program achieve great heights again.

Alvarez at Wisconsin is the modern day Frank Broyles as AD, IMO.

I was in Memphis for awhile working and that is all I heard from arky fans. All the time.

That is a very astute observation. Wisky wasn't much before Alvarez and he seems to like to keep his hand in the cookie jar, re: Rose Bowl. I mean really?

There is some truth too it, Holtz had the program in the Sugar, Fiesta, and Orange bowls, the program was up and consistent, recruiting well in Texas and Ohio, and Frank gets into it with him over offbeat jokes on the Carson Show and a political ad he did in Carolina and ends up firing him.

Hatfield wins back to back conference championships and Frank demands he fires assistants on his staff or he'd be gone with them, so he leaves for Clemson two weeks before NSD.

Fired Crowe at midfield after the first game of the season, not that Crowe was doing well or anything, but probably wasn't the best idea when it came time to replace him.

He use to show up to basketball practice with plays drawn up on paper and give them to Richardson and tell him to run them.

Yeah, I use to kinda like the guy and thought he retired way to early, but in the past few months I've learned he is one of the highest paid ADs in the country while he says paying the FB staff isn't in the budget to compete with the SEC. Then he gave himself a huge bonus for coaching that Rose Bowl loss this year.

Incorrect. You can thank Bill Curry for those stud players Gene Stallings coached to a title. Bill Currys only flaw was he couldn't beat Auburn to save his life. But, he was a good coach and a hell of a recruiter.

I remember O had the rebs shaking the visitors' entrance to Tiger Stadium. That 2006 game just exemplifies how 9/10 times LSU and Ole Miss is going to be a barn burner. Even Ed O could get Ole Miss ready for LSU

I don't know how good Curry could have been - I remember wanting him to stay and being disappointed when he announced he was going to UK. I haven't been impressed since he left Tuscaloosa, and I've always felt he was too quick to blame "not being accepted" for everything.

But it's the fact that we could have had a legendary coach in his prime that makes this such a bad hire.

Yes, Bowden would have been the better hire and that goes without saying. But, some people are implying Bill Curry is one of the worst coaches Alabama has had, which is far from true. Curry is one of the better ones Alabama has had since Bryant.

Yep, that one hurt. But even Snyder might have failed at Mizzou with Babs Uehling in charge of things.

We did end up hiring a Synder eventually, Quin Snyder when we could have hired Bill Self.

Gah!

To be fair, I don't think Hatfield over Johnson is the biggest miss. Granted Johnson could have been a phenomenal coach at Arkansas, but Hatfield still has the overall highest win percentage in Arkansas history. I think the difference is good vs great, not bad vs great.

7. No coach at all / a bag of rocks

8. Price

9. Giving up the football program and focusing on women's soccer.

10. DuBose

That's the way I would edit it.

Why are Arkansas fans so hard on Nutt. He was 75-48. Finished first or tied for first three times. It's not like any other coach has made you any better in the SEC. Sure Field, Holtz, and Broyles did well at Arkansas but you aren't in the SWC anymore. Dude did alright at Arkansas. Won 2 SEC coaches of the year even. I can think of plenty of worse decisions you have made off the top of my head.
Jack Crowe destroyed you after Hatfield left. Then Danny was awful. Nutt brought Arkansas back from the dead. I don't get the anger.
