the kill myself part was a joke, and its not really a simple name change. "Ole Miss" is a brand that our school has been known by for decades.

quote:

The Teddy Bear is beloved by children and adults alike. Often, a Teddy Bear is our very first cuddle friend when we come into this world. While Germany can take credit for the earliest stuffed bears, the United States can take the credit for the very first named "Teddy Bear", inspired by President Theodore Roosevelt's refusal to shoot a defenseless baby black bear at the end of an unsuccessful big game hunting trip in 1902.

Political cartoonist Clifford Berryman drew the event, titling it "Drawing the Line in Mississippi" which was published by The Washington Post. The cartoon was so popular that Berryman used the small bear character in all of his depictions of the President thereafter.

The same political cartoon got the attention of a store owner in Brooklyn named Morris Mitchom, who asked his wife to sew up a stuffed bear that resembled the one from the drawing. The bear that she created was showcased in the shop and named "Teddy's Bear". There were so many customers wanting the bear that Mrs. Mitchom couldn't make them fast enough. Mitchom wrote to the President to ask permission to name the bear after him to which the President replied in agreement with a hand written letter. With the success of Teddy's Bear, the Mitchom couple founded the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company and the American Teddy Bear was born.

Historically, yes. Today, only in Oxford.

Arkansas is full of black bears. There are some big scary bastards out there, too. There are hunting seasons. I need to plan ahead and participate in one, one of these years.

We have lots of big stuff to kill around here. I can never get into the elk hunt lottery. I try every year.

Tubbs Wanted the confederate flag banned. Said he couldn't recruit with it. They compromised. They banned sticks.

Mississippi actually has seen the numbers steadily climb up the past decade. Yes, there are black bears in Mississippi (and not just in Oxford).

it seems like Ole miss would have stayed away from the word 'black' given the whole reason for the change of mascot was over the perception of racism with the old mascot

however, i like the black bear mascot in general. Clemson actually had a black bear on campus last week
